PROLOGUE Matthew 27:31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped

him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.

Good Friday is good only in retrospect. In history, it was humanity’s darkest hour. Hitler overseeing the death of 20 million individuals, including 6 million Jews and 10 million Slavs, is a horrifying stain upon mankind’s record. Stalin adding another 20 million to that in his reign of terror is as agriegous. Pol Pot killing up to 2 million Cambodians is sickening. These heartbreaking and terrible tragedies are reminders to us of the depth of our depravity. That depravity is no more clearly evident than in the killing of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, by the religious leaders of Israel. The crime of history was committed in the name of piety. Mankind killed the Creator of man in the name of worship.

It is right for us to pause on Good Friday. There is nothing magical about this day; there is no special holiness associated with it. But with the busyness of our culture, the distractions of our technology, and the hurriedness of our lives, it is good to be reminded of ultimate realities, realities like those laid before us by Paul in Romans:

Romans 3:22–26: For there is no distinction [among men]: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at

the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

Structure: Each chapter will have two sections:

The first is the heart of each chapter, where you will be encouraged to take time to pause and reflect. Read a portion of Scripture, reflect on several questions, and then pray.

If you have extra time, join us in the second section of each chapter in order to mourn, rejoice, believe, hope, pray, and worship. Each song in the worship sections will have a hyperlink to a video or lyric resource. The footnote will contain copyright information, as well as a different weblink for more arrangements of that particular song.

Ideas for Use: While there is no right or wrong way to use this worship guide, we offer the following as options:

Focused: Consider working through the entire guide for a 70 minute span of time on Good Friday, taking 10 minutes per chapter as an individual or a family. Alternatively, work through just the first section of each chapter.

Spread out: If you desire to spend more time in each chapter spread out over a seven days, take one chapter each day beginning with Palm Sunday, and ending with Resurrection Sunday.

Individual: Spend time working through the material individually, journaling your thoughts and praying continually.

As a Family: Work through the material in a special time of family devotions during Passion Week or during a specific portion of the day on Good Friday.

The seven last recorded sayings of Jesus will be our guide as we worship our Lord on this Good Friday. This worship guide is written primarily for those who are followers of Christ. That is to say, this is written for those who regard Jesus not merely as a good teacher or a prophet, but for those who have embraced him as the only sacrifice for their sins and their only righteousness before the Father. It is my prayer that others will receive benefit as the Holy Spirit draws them to faith by means of the word of God. To God alone be the glory.

Saying One “FATHER, FORGIVE THEM.”

When reviled, he did not threaten. When persecuted, he did not lash out. When broken, he did not retaliate. Observe our Lord. See his pain. Hear his response. And worship.

Pause: Read Luke 23:26-28, 32-34 “And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting for him. But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.” (Luke 23:26–28)

“Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.” (Luke 23:32–34)

Reflect: • Why would Jesus deflect sympathy directed at him

and exhort those not physically suffering to mourn for themselves instead?

• When was the last time you mourned over your sin?

Pray: Consider praying something like this: I know that I have sinned, Father, against heaven and before you, and are not worthy to be called your child. But there is forgiveness, mercy, and redemption with you. You will not despise a broken and a contrite heart, though you are the High and Lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is holy. The ones who cover their sins will not prosper, yet those that confess and forsake them will find mercy. You have said that if we confess our sins, you are faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Amen. 1

Mourn: Ask the Father to break your heart continually over your sin against him. Quietly spend time journaling how you have fallen short of God’s glory today. Confess these sins to the Father in the name of the Son.

Believe: If you are a believer, spend time with the Father asking him to convince you that your sins are forgiven in Christ and then rest in the promise of forgiveness. If you have never trusted the Son as a substitute sacrifice who

died in your place, consider his call to you: “Repent and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15).

Worship: Stricken, Smitten, and Affl icted 2

1. Stricken, smitten, and

afflicted See Him dying on the tree!

‘Tis the Christ by man rejected Yes, my soul, ‘tis He, ‘tis He!

‘Tis the long-expected Prophet David’s son, yet David’s Lord

By His Son God now has spoken ‘Tis the true and faithful Word

2. Tell me, ye who hear Him

groaning Was there ever grief like His?

Friends through fear His cause disowning

Foes insulting His distress Many hands were raised to

wound Him None would interpose to save

But the deepest stroke that pierced Him

Was the stroke that Justice gave

3. Ye who think of sin but lightly

Nor suppose the evil great Here may view its nature rightly

Here its guilt may estimate Mark the sacrifice appointed See who bears the awful load

‘Tis the Word, the Lord’s Anointed

Son of Man and Son of God

4. Here we have a firm foundation

Here the refuge of the lost Christ, the Rock of our salvation His the name of which we boast

Lamb of God, for sinners wounded

Sacrifice to cancel guilt! None shall ever be confounded Who on Him their hope have

built

Saying Two “TODAY YOU WILL BE WITH ME.”

Simple words, yet brimming with hope, mercy, grace, and glory. This criminal had no time for religious observance. Baptism was out of the question. Good deeds were impossible. All he could do was cry out in

faith to be remembered by the Messiah. The Messiah’s response is beautifully far beyond what the man expected or deserved. This is grace. Observe our Lord. Hear his response. And worship.

Pause: Read Luke 23:35–43.

“And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same

sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”” (Luke 23:35–43)

Reflect: • What would the “due reward” for your deeds be? • Why is the man’s request surprising? Why is Jesus’

answer even more surprising?

Pray: Consider praying something like this: O Lord Jesus Christ, in your agony you showed compassion to a man who recognized his sinfulness and your holiness. You gave him the gift of eternal life. We thank you for that same indescribable gift to us. Help us to show such compassion to the lost so that they also may dwell in paradise with you. In your holy name we pray. Amen.

Mourn: Ask the Father to show you areas where a self-righteous mindset has affected your relationship with God. Spend some time journaling what the Holy Spirit reveals. Repent of these areas asking your loving Father for forgiveness.

Believe: By faith, cling to the abundant grace of God and rejoice that your sins are forgiven in Jesus. Praise God for the truth that eternal life is yours through the person of Jesus Christ.

Worship: Jesus, Thank You 3

Saying Three “HERE IS YOUR SON… HERE IS YOUR

MOTHER.”

Mary was a woman, made in the image of God, unique and special, but human. She felt pain, sinned, and experienced human weakness. As the mother of Jesus watched her son die, she was experiencing the

truth of Simeon’s words three decades earlier: the sword was piercing her soul. And her son, who happened to be her Savior as well, had not forgotten about her. Observe our Lord. Hear his words. And worship.

Pause: Read Luke 2:33-35, and John 19:25b-27.

“And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”” (Luke 2:33–35, ESV)

“When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.” ( John 19:25b–27)

Reflect: • What do we observe regarding Jesus’ compassion in

these verses? • Does Jesus have the same intimate knowledge of you

and love for you as he did for his mother Mary? ( John 10:27-30, 17:20-26)

• How significant is it to be known and loved by the Creator of the Universe, the Son of God?

Pray: Consider praying something like this: O Lord Jesus Christ, in your agony you showed compassion on your mother. You know me, your child whom you have called to yourself, no less intimately. Convince me of your care and compassion, that I have nothing to hide from you, and make my my life reflect such care and compassion towards those with whom you surround me.

Mourn: Ask the Father to show you areas where you are resisting being known by him, trying to compartmentalize off areas of your life from his gaze. Spend some time journaling what the Holy Spirit reveals to you. Repent of this improper compartmentalization, asking your Father for forgiveness.

Believe: Believer, you are a child of God. You are known by God, and one day you will know even as you are known. Praise the Father for this!

Worship: He is Our God 4

1. Who can light the fires Of a thousand burning suns

Blazing in the heavens? There is only One

He is our God

2. Who commands the nations

Building up and tearing down

Silencing His rivals? There is only One

He is our God, He is our God

Holy, You alone are holy Matchless in Your glory, holy

God

3. Who would come to save us

When we turned away His love

Conquer us with kindness? There is only One

He is our God, He is our God

Holy, You alone are holy Matchless in Your glory, no

one is like You Worthy, You alone are

worthy We adore You only, holy God

Now to the King on the throne

Who was and is to come And to the Lamb Who was

slain be glory!

Saying Four “WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?”

We are treading on holy ground. The mystery here stretches our brains to the breaking point. Firing neurons are not able to fathom the forsaking of God by God. Jesus entered the ultimate curse, the true

nature of hell—God-forsakeness—so that we would never have to experience it. What wonder is here! What awe! What glory! What mystery! Behold your God-forsaken God, forsaken because of your sin, my sin. Hear his words. And worship.

Pause: Mark 15:33–35 (consider also reading Psalm 22)

“And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”” (Mark 15:33–35)

Reflect: • Have you ever felt forsaken by God? • Thomas Watson said, “The excusing and mincing of

sin casts a reproach upon God.” How should 5

viewing the God-forsaken God change your view of the cause of that God-forsakeness— your sin?

Pray: Consider praying something like this: O Lord Jesus Christ, you were forsaken by your Father so that I might be received by your Father as his son/daughter. This is beyond my comprehension. But grow my understanding in this mystery, and cause me to bask in the height, breadth, width and depth of your love. Use that understanding to deepen my hatred for anything that dishonors my Father.

Mourn: Ask the Father to show you the “respectable sins” you engage in daily, those sins that are overlooked and seemingly trivial. Spend some time journaling what the Holy Spirit reveals to you. Repent of these sins that caused your Savior to be cursed of God on your behalf, asking your Father for forgiveness.

Believe: Believer, the death of Jesus covers sin, completely. He is a Savior to the uttermost (Heb. 7:25) who experienced what it is to be forsaken by God so that he might never forsake you. Even when you feel isolated, alone, or abandoned, take courage: he has and will never leave you, nor forsake you. Hear this promise in his cry of abandonment.

Worship: How Deep 6

You were broken that I might be healed You were cast off that I might draw near You were thirsty that I might come drink Cried out in anguish that I might sing How deep is Your love How high and how wide is Your mercy How deep is Your grace Our hearts overflow with praise To You You knew darkness that I might know light Wept great tears that mine might be dried Stripped of glory that I might be clothed Crushed by Your Father to call me Your own

Saying Five “I THIRST.”

Of all the last words of Jesus, these words reveal most vividly Jesus’ humanity. Hanging on the cross, broken, bruised, and bleeding, he is parched. His work is almost finished; there is yet more to be said. So he

requests a drink. Observe our Lord. Hear his words. And worship.

Pause: Read John 19:28-29.

“After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.” ( John 19:28–29)

Reflect: • Jesus’ thirst was physical. But throughout his

ministry, Jesus used the metaphor of water, drinking, and thirsting to teach spiritual truths. What do you remember concerning these truths?

• Even in death, Jesus’ physical appetites were subservient to the work to which God had called him. His drinking, even in death, was to the glory of

God and to fulfill God’s purposes. Are you ruled by your physical appetites, or do you seek to glorify God whether you eat or drink?

Pray: Consider praying something like this: O Lord Jesus Christ, in your suffering you thirsted, displaying both your humanity and your absolute commitment to fulfill the will of God. Create in me a recognition of my humanity—weak, sinful, ever dependent upon some outside source for life—and then satisfy me daily in the life of submissive, joyful obedience to which you have called me.

Mourn: Ask the Father’s forgiveness for giving in to the temptation to believe that you are self-sufficient and more than merely human. Seek his forgiveness for attitudes of self-dependence and self-sufficiency and for all attempts and pursuits of self-glory.

Believe: Trust that God forgives sin. Rejoice that there is so much more to live for than your own glory. You have been made to bring the Maker praise. You have been created to glorify God. Further, you have been saved and made a part of the redeemed of humanity. Though human, dependent, weak, and frail, you have been qualified to be a member of “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, [so] that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9).

Worship: O Lord, My Rock and My Redeemer 7

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer Greatest treasure of my longing soul

My God, like You there is no other True delight is found in You alone

Your grace, a well too deep to fathom Your love exceeds the heavens’ reach Your truth, a fount of perfect wisdom

My highest good and my unending need

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer Strong defender of my weary heart My sword to fight the cruel deceiver

And my shield against his hateful darts My song when enemies surround me

My hope when tides of sorrow rise My joy when trials are abounding

Your faithfulness, my refuge in the night

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer Gracious Savior of my ruined life

My guilt and cross laid on Your shoulders In my place You suffered bled and died

You rose, the grave and death are conquered You broke my bonds of sin and shame

O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer May all my days bring glory to Your Name

Saying Six “IT IS FINISHED.”

The one word underlying these three English words speaks to something brought to completion. The

suffering, the pain, the agony, the forsakenness: none of it was wasted. It was all for a purpose. The moment had

come; the suffering was ended; the curse was born; the debt was paid. Observe our Lord. Hears his words. And worship.

Pause: Read John 19:30

“When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished” (John 19:30).

Reflect: • Consider Hebrews 1:3 and Hebrews 9:24-28:

“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” (Hebrews 1:3)

“For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now

to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” (Hebrews 9:24–28)

• What was now completed? What had Jesus accomplished?

Pray: Consider praying something like this: O Lord Jesus Christ, you completed the work of your Father and offered yourself as a sacrifice for sin completely, unreservedly, without hesitation. You died that I might have life! Your payment propitiated—soaked up every ounce of—God’s wrath aimed at me, so that now, by grace through faith in your work alone, I stand as an adopted son/daughter, not a condemned criminal. You are now my everything; you are all I have and all I claim!

Mourn: Ask the Father to grow within you a deepening affection for the Lord Jesus and a growing likeness to your Savior.

Believe: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:1–2)

Worship: All I Have is Christ 8

I once was lost in darkest night Yet thought I knew the way The sin that promised joy and life Had led me to the grave I had no hope that You would own A rebel to Your will And if You had not loved me first I would refuse You still But as I ran my hell-bound race Indifferent to the cost You looked upon my helpless state And led me to the cross And I beheld God’s love displayed You suffered in my place You bore the wrath reserved for me Now all I know is grace Hallelujah! All I have is Christ Hallelujah! Jesus is my life Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone And live so all might see The strength to follow Your commands Could never come from me O Father, use my ransomed life In any way You choose And let my song forever be My only boast is You

Saying Seven “FATHER…I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.”

Our Lord’s final words are words of absolute, total surrender. They are submissive words, humble words, words of faith-filled resignation to the will and work of God. A death cry rips through the darkness, while the

curtain barring sinful man from a Holy God is torn apart. Oh, what kind of man is this? Observe our Lord. Watch him trust. Hear his death-shout. And worship.

Pause: Read Luke 23:44-46

“It was now about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:44–46)

Reflect: Believer, what is your only comfort in life and death?

Answer: “That I am not my own [1 Corinthians 6:19-20], but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death [Rom 14:7-9] to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ [1 Corinthians 3:23, Titus 2:14].

He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood [1 Peter 1:18, 19; 1 John 1:7, 2:2], and has set me free from all the power of the devil [ John 8:34-36; Hebrews 2:14, 15; 1 John 3:8].

He also preserves me in such a way that without the will of my heavenly Father not a hair can fall from my head [ Jn 6:39, 40; 10:27-30; 2 Thess 3:3; 1 Pet 1:5, Matthew 10:29-31; Luke 21:16-18]; indeed, all things must work together for my salvation [Romans 8:28].

Therefore, by his Holy Spirit he also assures me of eternal life and makes me heartily willing and ready from now on to live for him [Romans 8:15; 2 Corinthians 1:21, 22; 5:5; Ephesians 1:13, 14; Romans 8:14].” 9

Pray: Consider praying something like this: O Lord Jesus Christ, you were faithful to death, and entrusted your life and death to the hands of your Father. Thank you for your obedience and your love for the Father that makes it possible that I might be adopted in your family.

Question and Answer 1 of the Heidelberg Catechism.9

Mourn: Ask God for forgiveness in your cheapening of Christ’s work by living as if it has little merit; speaking of it flippantly or ignorantly; and failing to allow its truth to soak into your soul.

Rejoice: Praise the Father for the finished work of Christ on the cross, your adoption into the family of God by means of that work, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the fact that you have been transferred from darkness into his marvelous life.

Believe: “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:13–14)

Worship: Lord, Have Mercy 10

EPILOGUE “Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about

me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the

Scriptures, and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead,

and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from

Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the

city until you are clothed with power from on high.” And he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed

them. While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple

blessing God.” (Luke 24:44–53)
