FOREWORD
This document was prepared in order to facilitate communications
for the Space Transportation System (STS) and Associated Payloads
(see Glossary for definitions). It contains a glossary and a listing of
Acronyms and Abbreviations in current use, and is intended for use by
those who write/interpret/prepare material for publication relative to
the Space Transportation System.
It is recognized that the listing is not all inclusive or complete. This
document will periodically be updated to provide a current listing of all
approved STS and Associated Payloads acronyms and abbreviations.
Copies of this document are available at the KSC Library (Docu-
ments Section).

This Section contains a glossary of terms (and definitions)in current usage for the Space Transportation System (STS)and Associated Payloads.
ACCEPTANCE TESTSTeststo determine that a part, component, subsystem,or facility is capable of meeting performancerequirements prescribed in purchase specifications orother documents specifying what constitutes theadequate performance capability for the item.
ASSEMBLYA"number of parts, or subassemblies and/or anycombination thereof, joined together to perform aspecific function and capable of disassembly. Thedistinction between an assembly and a subassembly isdetermined by the individual application. An assemblyin one instance may be a subassembly in another, whereit forms a portion of an assembly.
ATTACHING PARTAnitemused to attach assemblies or parts to theequipment, or to each other.
AUTOMATED PAYLOADSThosepayloads which are supported by an unmannedspacecraft capable of operating independently of theSpace Transportation System (STS).
AUXILIARY STAGEAsmallpropulsion unit used with a payload, whenrequired. One or more of these units may be used witha payload, to provide the additional velocity requiredto place a payload in the desired orbit or trajectory.
A propulsion system that is used to provide midcoursetrajectory corrections, braking maneuvers, and/ororbital adjustments.

BILL OF WORK (BOW)A detailed work schedule which lists all Operation 6Maintenance (OEM) tasks required to be performed ateach work station for a specific vehicle turnaround.It also contains applicable information such assequence of performance, OSM instruction number, workauthorization number, time allocated, manpower, skilllevel, and the start and completion data.
CARGOEverything contained in the Shuttle Payload Bay plusother equipment located elsewhere in the Orbiter whichis user unique and not carried in the standardbaseline Orbiter weight budget.
CERTIFICATIONFormal documentation that the individual has reachedthe prescribed skill or knowledge level as cited in aNASA/KSC specification, contract specification, orother appropriate documents.
COMMERCIAL PART OR ITEMA part or item which is manufactured primarily for thecommercial rather than the Government market andhaving both commercial and Government applications.Commercial parts also include parts which aremanufactured in accordance with normal commericalquality controlled production runs which meet orexceed the requirements of Government specificationsor standards .
COMPONENTAn assembly or any combination of parts, subassembliesand assemblies, and assemblies mounted together andnormally capable of independent operation in a varietyof situations.
CONCURRENT DELIVER?delivery of support items concurrently with the
end item being provisioned.
CONDITION MONITOREDtfhose items tKat have neither limited life nor on-condition maintenance as their primary maintenanceprocess. Condition monitoring is accomplished mainlyby in-place instrumentation, sampling, and subsequenttrending analysis which provides data to predict anincipient failure.

CONSTRUCTION AWARDTheeffective date of direction from the KSCcontracting office to the selected contractorauthorizing commencement of work. Issue of the noticeof award by the KSC procurement office completes thismilestone.
CONSTRUCTION COMPLETEAppropriatefacility construction is complete and thefacility is available for equipment installation.Certification by the DE site activation officecompletes this milestone.
CONTRACT AWARDTheeffective date of direction from the KSCcontracting office to the selected contractorauthorizing commencement of work. Issue of the noticeof award by the KSC procurement office completes thismilestone.
CONTRACTORThesupplier of the end item and associated supportitems to the Government under the terms of a specificcontract.
CUSTOMER (or USER)An organization or individual requiring the servicesof the Space Transportation System.
DEDICATED SPACELABAnextensionmodule devoted to a single disciplinewhich may fly more than once a year for several years,and which may be assigned to a payload developmentcenter.
DESIGN CHANGEA NASAapproved engineering change incorporated intothe end item which modifies, adds to, deletes, orsupersedes parts in the end item.
DESIGN REVIEWSCritical Design Review (CDR).The completion of a meeting chaired by the KSC ShuttleProjects Manager, or his designated representative, toassure that the completed designs are in consonancewith Level II and project specifications.
Preliminary Desing Review (PDR).The completion of a meeting chaired by the KSC ShuttleProjects Manager, or his designated representative, atwhich preliminary designs are reviewed with primecontractors to assure compliance with system andproject requirements.

30X Design Review.A meetingchaired by the responsible DE projectengineer, or his designated representative, at whichpreliminary designs are reviewed to assuresatisfaction of system and project requirements.
9OX Design Review.A meetingchaired by the responsible DE projectengineer, or his designated representative, at whichfinal designs are reviewed to assure compliance withsystem and project specifications.
DRAWINGSGraphic data, including drawings as defined in MIL-STD-100A and prepared in accordance with MIL-D-1000,Category D, aperture cards in accordance with MIL-C-9877; graphs, or diagrams, industry standards andindustry specifications, on which details arerepresented with sufficient information to definecompletely, directly or by reference, the end resultin the selection, procurement, and manufacture of theitem required.
END ARTICLE/END ITEMA physical element of the Space Transportation System.It is a functional physical entity related andselected for the purpose of system development,procurenent, and logistics.
END ITEMA iinal combination of end products, components parts,or materials which is ready for its intended use;e.g., Orbiter, receiver, amplifier, recorder, groundsupport equipment, etc.
ESTIMATED ON DOCK (EOD) DATEThedate the equipment is forecast to arrive on-dockat KSC. Initially, this date should coincide with thedesired contract delivery date for purchasedequipment. Subsequent to contract award, the datewill reflect the vendor's estimate of his ability todeliver.
EXPERIMENTThesystem of hardware, software, and procedures forperformance of a scientific or applicationsinvestigation undertaken to:
• Discover unknown phenomena• Establish the basis of known laws• Evaluate applications processes and/or equipment

FACILITY NEED DATEThat date when the appropriate facility is required toreceived program hardware (Orbiter, SRB, ET) for testand checkout. First operational use of the facilitycompletes this milestone.
FAILURE MODES AND EFFECTS CRITICALITy ANALYSIS (FHECA)AnanalysistodetermineaLRU/SRUmethodandfrequency of failure and the resulting effects.
FEDERAL ITEM IDENTIFICATIONA complete description in accordance with FED-STD-5.
FEDERAL SUPPLY CODE FOR MANUFACTURERS (FSCM)Providesanonsignificantcode assigned to identifymanufacturers. Normally used with the Manufacturer'sPart Number (see Federal Cataloging Handbooks H4-1 andH4-2 for codes).
FIRST MANNED ORBITAL FLIGHT (FMOF)Liftoff otthefirstmanned Space Shuttle from thelaunch pad at KSC on the first manned orbital flight.Vehicle flight beyond "tower clear" completes thismilestone. Subsequent flights use similardefinitions.
FLIGHTThat portion of a mission encompassing the period fromLaunch to Landing, or Launch to Termination, of theactive life of a spacecraft. The term Shuttle"Flight" means a single Shuttle round trip (itslaunch, orbital activity, and return). One flightmight deliver more than one payload. More than oneflight might be required to accomplish one mission.
FLIGHT READINESS FIRING (FRF)FirstShuttlevehicleTs stacked on the launch pad,and a Countdown Demonstration Test (CDDT) performed(designed to duplicate to the fullest possible extentan actual launch countdown). Propellant loadingoccurs in normal launch sequence, culminating a 20second flight readiness firing. Engine shutdown after20 seconds of sustained firing completes thismilestone.
FREE FLEERAny payload that is detached from the Orbiter duringthe operational phase of that payload, and is capableof independent operations.

GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT (GSE)Non-flightequipment,Implements and the devicesrequired for the handling, servicing, inspection,testing, maintenance, alignment, adjustment, check,repair and overhaul of an operational end item or asub-system or component thereof. This may includeequipment required to support another item of groundsupport equipment as defined herein.
HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT COMPLETEThe date all hardware manufacture/procurement has beencompleted, and hardware is ready to be delivered underterms of the contract. Notification from thecontractor to the responsible KSC office completesthis milestone.
INDENTUREA method of showing relationships to indicatedependence and an order of dependence. Indenturingprovides a top down breakdown of an item into itsassemblies, subassemblies, components, and parts.
INITIAL DELIVERSThedateoT delivery for the first item of equipmentto be delivered under terms of the contract.Acceptance of the equipment by the SP site activationoffice completes this milestone.
INITIAL OPERATIONAL CAPABILITY (IOC)P o i n t i n t i m e a t w h i c h t E e first operationalconfigured Space Shuttle vehicle is prepared forflight. Successful completion of DDTSE andcertification of flight hardware completes thismilestone.
INITIAL OUTFITTING/LAY-INThe positioning of support items at user levels and atintermediate supply and maintenance levels as initialissues in anticipated support of newly deployed enditems.
INSTALLATION COMPLETEThat date when the DE site activation office declaresthe complete system has been installed at thefacility. Certification by the SP site activationoffice completes this milestone.
IN-STORAGE MAINTENANCEThe actions performed on a stored item to retain it ina specified condition by providing systematicinspection, detection and prevention of deterioration.

INTEGRATED LOGISTICSThoseinterrelated processes which identify andprovide the service and resources (hardware and data)required to achieve an economical and timely supportof operations. The principal processes are: logisticsengineering analyses, maintainability, maintenance,operational maintenance documentation, supply,transportation/packaging, training, and logisticsmanagement information.
INTEGRATION5combination of activities and processes to assemblecomponents, subsystems, and system elements intodesired configuration, and to verify compatibilitybetween the constituents of the assembly.
INTEGRATION LEVELSLevel I-Cargo/Shuttle Integration; Integration into theOrbiter of everything that goes on a single Shuttleflight.
Level II-Element into Cargo Integration; Assembly of Spacecraftelements and/or free flyers (with or without Tug) intoa cargo for a single Shuttle flight.
Level III-Instrument to Supporting System Integration;Integration of one or more instrument assemblies withSpacelab elements (extension module and/or pallet) orthe free flyer payload.
Level IV-Instrument Assembly Integration; Assembly ofindividual instruments and their unique supportingsubsystem into a compatible package of equipment toaccomplish specific mission objectives on a givenflight.
INTERFACEThemechanical, electrical, and operational commonboundary between two constituents of a system.
INTERIM RELEASEAuthorization given a contractor to release supportitems to production or procurement simultaneously withhis production requirements for like items prior tosubmission of a Spare Parts Order.

INTERIM UPPER STAGE (IUS)An upper stage capable of being launched from thecargo bay of the Orbiter, and intended for use priorto the availability of the Space Tug. As presentlyplanned, it will be a modification eft an existingstage, may or may not be retrievable for reuse, andwill be capable of the delivery but not the retrievalof payloads.
INVITATION FOR BIDS (IFB)ThatpointIntime when the complete assembly ofdocuments related to a particular contract award willbe provided to the prospective bidders by a formaladvertisement for the purpose of competitive bidding.Issue of the invitation by the KSC procurement officecompletes this milestone.
ITEMAny level of _ hardware assembly (system, element,subsystem, equi'pment, component, or part).
K-FACTORSA series of terms used to derate Meantime BetweenFailure (MTBF) to a Meantime Between Demand (MTBD) onthe supply system. Four examples are:

LAUNCH PADThepad area from which the Space Shuttle will belaunched. The stacked Space Shuttle will undergofinal prelaunch checkout and countdown at the launchpad.
LAUNCH PROCESSING SYSTEM (LPS)A high speed digital computer operated checkout systemused to support test, checkout, launch control, andoperational management of launch site groundoperations at KSC.

LAUNCH PROCESSING SYSTEM (LPS) SUPPORT AVAILABLEPointIntime when LPS for a given facility is readytor use by KSC test personnel. Certification by theSP site activation office completes this milestone.
LEVEL OF REPAIR ANALYSIS (LORA)Aprocessforrecommending repair levels of LRUs,SRUs, assemblies, and sub-assemblies which will accrueminimum total support costs within operational andtechnical constraints over the system design life. Itforms the basis for assigning repair level; repairVersus discard-at-failure decision; repair partsprovisioning; Source, Maintenance, and Recoverability(SMR) coding; maintenance planning, and documentation.
LINE REPLACEABLE UNIT (LRU)Anyitemwhosereplacement constitutes the optimumorganizational maintenance repair action for a higherindenture item (i.e., any assembly which can beremoved and replaced as a unit from the system at theoperating location).
LOGISTICS ENGINEERING ANALYSES (LEA)Xcompositeof analysis techniques which are used toidentify the necessary logistics resources to supportoperation and maintenance functions in a timely andeconomical manner. This includes training, level ofrepair, spares determination analyses, etc.
LONG LEAPT1MB ITEMSThoseitemswKich because of their complexity ofdesign, complicated manufacturing processes, orlimited production, may cause production orprocurement cycles which would preclude timely oradequate delivery, if not ordered in advance of normalprovisioning.
MAINTAINABILITY (M)T h e d e s i g n , installation, and operatingcharacteristics of an item which enables it to beretained in or returned to a specified operationalcondition by expending resources at an acceptable rateusing prescribed procedures.
MAINTENANCETheactions taken to retain an item in a specifiedcondition by providing systematic inspection,detection, and servicing for the prevention otincipient failure, and the action taken to restore anitem to a specified operational condition. Thisincludes fault isolation, item replacement, repair andverify serviceable.

MAINTENANCE CONCEPTAdescription of the planned method for accomplishingmaintenance. A thought process which relates themaintenance tasks to be performed to the maintenancelevels to support the operation of thesystem/equipment in the planned operationalenvironment.
MAINTENANCE ENGINEERING ANALYSIS (MEA)An analysis of contract end item/LRU/SRU or equivalentitems which defines the repair tasks necessary torestore a system to operational condition utilizingthe maintenance philosophy/ maintainabilitycharacteristics and other factors.
MAINTENANCE GROUND EQUIPMENT (MGE)The equipment which is used to support the maintenanceoperations for vehicle, payload, stages, facilities,or other MGE.
MAINTENANCE LEVELSAll maintenance functions performed either directly onthe vehicle or in a supporting role categorized in oneof the following three categories:
a. Organizational Level - Maintenance performed onvehicle subsystems and related support equipmentin direct support of the turnaround flow. Itincludes scheduled and unscheduled maintenanceactions required to inspect, service, calibrate,replace, repair and modify in-place, and reverify(sub)systems and associated components.
b. Intermediate Level - Maintenance that isperformed in direct support of organizationallevel maintenance and involves disposition,repair, service, modification, calibration, andverification of items removed duringorganizational maintenance.
c. Depot Level - Maintenance that is performed bydesignatedmaintenance sources; e.g.,manufacturers, USAF Air Logistics Centers, NASACenters, etc. It normally consists ofmaintenance that requires MGE, facilities, orskills which are not economically available atthe intermediate level; e.g., repairing,modifying, overhauling, reclaiming, or rebuildingparts, assemblies, subassemblies, components, andend items, manufacturing of unavailable parts andproviding technical assistance to theorganizational and intermediate maintenancelevels.

MAINTENANCE TRAININGDetailedwork-oriented instructions on servicing,maintenance, overhaul, and repair of product enditems, including support and facilities equipment.
MANAGEMENT CODINGTheassignment of codes consisting of letters and/ornumerals to support items to record managementdecisions, such as sources for resupply, prescribedlevels of maintenance, item managers, and othermanagement data.
MATERIAL SERVICE CENTERS (MSC)An activity established adjacent to a facility or workarea concentration for the purpose of furnishingsupply support and supply support services to allorganizations and functional activities in theimmediate area(s) which require such service. EachMSC will provide a single point of contact with theKSC supply system, and will receive, stock, and issuematerial and supplies required by the area(s) served.
MISSIONThe performance of a coherent set of investigations oroperations in space to achieve program goals.
Examples tMeasure detailed structure of sun'schromosphere.Survey mineral resources of North America.
MOBILE LAUNCH PLATFORM (MLP)The elements of the Space Shuttle will be stacked uponthe MLP while in the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB).After stacking, it will be rolled out to the launchpad.
MODIFICATION COMPLETEThatdatewhenexisting facilities at KSC have beenmodified. Certification by the SP site activationoffice completes this milestone.
MULTIPLE PASfLOADSMorethanone separate payload carried in the cargobay.
MULTIPURPOSE SPACELABAn extension module involving a variety of disciplinesusually tor specific flights, and which may requirethe services of a payload integrator or agent.

NATIONAL STOCK NUMBER (NSN)A discrete identifying number assigned to each item ofsupply within the Federal Catalog System. A datachain consisting of the four digit Federal SupplyClassification, two digit Country Code and seven digitFederal Item Identification Number in that order. Mayhave a two character Dual cognizance Code and onecharacter Material Control Code prefix, and a twocharacter Special Material Identification Code suffix.
OFF-EINEAn activity conducted (by a payload owner) independentof any STS element (i.e., Tug, Spacelab, or Shuttle).This normally means the activity is conducted in aseparate facility as well.
OFF-LINE MAINTENANCEThat maintenance function performed at theintermediate and depot maintenance levels.
ON-CONDITIOH MAINTENANCEThoseitem,whichWill remain in place until anassessment of the item's condition indicates thatremoval is required, are classified as on-conditionitems. The assessments are made at intervalsdetermined by the item's failure characteristics, andmany consist of inspections, measurements, test, orany other means not requiring disassembly or removalof the item.
ON-LINE MAINTENANCEThat maintenance function performed at theorganizational level.
ON-LINE (STS)An activity conducted with payload and one or more STSelements. This is broked down as follows:
On-Line Shuttle; An activity encompassing apayload, its carrier, and theShuttle vehicle.
On-Line Spacelab; An activity encompassing apayload and its Spacelab.
On-Line Tug/IUS; An activity involving apayload and the Tug/IUS.
ON-THE-JOB TRAINING (OJT)Aplannedprogramwhich augments classroom trainingthrough self-study and supervised instruction toprovide expanded knowledge and job proficiency whilethe trainee is actually working in a duty assignment.

OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE DOCUMENTATION (OMD)OMDincludes: engineeringdrawingsand lists,Organizational Operations and Maintenance (OM) manualsincluding OHIs; Standard Repair manuals. IllustratedParts Breakdowns (IPBs), Intermediate Maintenancemanuals, Non-destructive Inspection (NDI) manuals,Work Unit Code (HUC) manuals, and Time ComplianceTechincal Instructions (TCTIs).
OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE (OM) MANUALSOMmanualsareorganizedprocedual informationspecifying methods of operating and maintaining flighthardware and support equipment. OM manuals will beused in the performance of day-to-day operations andmaintenance tasks.
OPERATIONAL CHECKOUTThat periodof time when the Operations andMaintenance (O6M) organization performs crew training,simulations, and procedural familiarization prior tofirst use on flight hardware. Certification of groundtest and checkout, and crew readiness to support theassigned mission prior to receipt of flight hardwarecompletes this period.
OPERATIONAL READINESS DATE (ORD)Thatdatewhen a facility, including all systems andequipment, is operationally ready and is turned overto the user/operator for operational training andsystems familiarization prior to first use in supportof flight hardware checkout. Certification by the SPsite activation office completes this milestone.
OPERATOR NEED DATEtONDJThedate the KSC operator (OSM organization) requiresthe equipment/GSE to be made available to them, toaccomplish any remaining work required prior to firstuse.
OPTIMUM REPAIR LEVELThe maintenance level selected to perform specifictasks and functions for a given equipment item. Thedecision to repair equipment at the indicatedmaintenance level requires that all authorizedmaintenance capability (remove, replace, assembly, ortest) be provided to that level. This does notprevent some repair from being done at a differentlevel of maintenance for a different task.
OPTIMUM REPAIR LEVEL ANALYSIS (ORLA)See "Level of Repair Analysis*.

ORBITER PROCESSING FACILITY (OFF)TnTITia building at KSC with two bays in which theOrbiter undergoes post flight inspection, maintenance,and premate checkout prior to payload installation.
ORGANIC SUPPORTIn-houseHASA/DOD assumption of intermediate or depotsupply and maintenance activity vis-a-viscontractor/vendor support.
OUTFITTING AWARDTneeffective date of direction from the KSCcontracting officer to the selected ^ contractorauthorizing commencement of work. Issue of notice ofthe award by the KSC procurement office completes thismilestone.
OUTFITTING COMPLETEThat date when all systems/equipment has beenemplaced. Certification by SP site activation officecompletes this milestone.
PALLETAn external unpressurized platform for mountingtelescopes, antennas, and other instruments andequipment requiring direct space exposure forconducting science and applications activities onSpace Shuttle Spacelab missions. The pallet may becomposed of segments.
PARTOne piece, or two or more pieces, joined togetherwhich are not normally subject to disassembly withoutdestruction or impairment of designed use.
PAyLOAD CHANGEOUT ROOMAnenvironmental controlled room on a movable supportstructure which includes a manipulator system fortransferring a payload vertically between a transportcanister and the Orbiter payload bay.
PECULIAR PARTAny part which must be produced to order in accordancewith a particular drawing and/or specification. Anypart requiring flight certification shall beclassified peculiar. Also, normally standard partsthat must be selectively accepted (to criteriadifferent from the usual standard part requirements)shall be considered peculiar.

PHASED PROVISIONINGArefinementto the provisioning process wherebyprocurement of selected items is phased by timeinterval into the later stages of production, therebyenhancing the ability of the provisioning activity toselect the most favorable mix of requirements.
PRELIMINARY ENGINEERING REPORT (PER) - FINAL RELEASEThat date when preliminary engineering is complete andthe final documentation has been released.Distribution of the final documentation completes thismilestone.
PRICED SPARE PARTS LISTApricedlist of items and quantities of spare partsselected for procurement under the contract.
PROCURE/FABRICATE COMPLETEThatdatewhen all procurement and fabrication for aparticular facility has been . finished. Certifiedacceptance by the SP site activation office completesthis milestone.
PROCUREMENT METHOD CODE (PMC)Thecontractor will use a alpha-suffix codes (6, 7 or8) contained in MIL-STD-789B to communicate his reasonfor assignment of a Contractor Recommended Code (CRC).Procurement Method Codes (1 through 5) will always beassigned by Government representatives (KSCProvisioning Team) from the CRC codes furnished by thecontractor.
PROGRAMAn activity involving manpower, material, funding, andscheduling which is necessary to achieve desired goals(i.e.. Shuttle Program, Solar Astronomy Program,etc.,).
PROGRAMMING CHECK LIST (PCL)Is used to provide data governing initial provisioningfor end items of Shuttle hardware and related supportequipment.
PROVISIONING ACTIVITYTheKSCProvisioning Team, Shuttle Projects Office,which is responsible for the selection of, and thedetermination of requirements for, provisioned items.
PROVISIONING PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE (PPS)CheckListofentriesincluding schedules in theprovisioning process that is used to monitor suchevents.

PROVISIONING SCREENINGProvisioningScreening, when required by theProvisioning Requirements Statement, will beaccomplished in accordance with DOD 4100.38M(Provisioning and other Preprocurement ScreeningManual).
PROVISIONING SPECIFICATIONTsthecontracturalinstrument to provide clear andconcise instructions which will achieve the objectiveof providing adequate, timely and economical support,by need dates tor systems and end items entering theinventory. It provides NASA with the flexibility inselecting minimum essential data for each specificprocurement, and provides the contractor the detailedguidance to fulfill provisioning requirements. PROVISIONING TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION (PTD)I sthegenerictermusedto reference the varioustypes of Provisioning Lists, decks of Punch CardsMechanized (PCM), or Automatic Data Processing (ADP)tapes. PTD shall be furnished by contractors to KSCProvisioning Activities tor the identification,selection, and determination of initial requirementsand cataloging of support items to be procured throughthe provisioning process. Supplementary ProvisioningTechnical Documentation (SPTD) is also considered tobe a part of PTD.

QUANTITATIVE REQUIREMENTSQuantitative requirements provide a firm goal(appointment of time available for maintenance) forthe designer to meet his design, and also provide arequirement whose goal can later be demonstratedduring the verification period.
This type of quantitative requirement specified in amaintainability activity must be responsive to theoperational use of the equipment. Times may bespecified in manhours, clockhours, or both.Maintenance times may also be broken out and leviedfor the various elements that comprise the totalrepair functions such as fault isolate, remove/replaceor checkout. The requirement will also be specifiedfor all applicable levels of maintenance; these areorganizational, intermediate and depot. A listing ofthe common types of requirements to be considered are:

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL (RFP)That point in time when the necessary documentation isissued to request proposals from prospective biddersprior to negotiation of a contract. Issue of therequest by the KSC procurement office completes thismilestone.
SAFETif TRAININGInstructions which alert a trainee to those conditionsor operations which could be substantially dangerousto the operator, or other hazard that would damageequipment or property.
SCHEDULED DELIVERYWhenNASAprovides a required delivery schedule witheach Spare Parts Order (SPO), the contractor shallaccept the order and within 30 days notify NASA of hisacceptance of the schedule or provide a proposed lineitem delivery schedule for negotiation. The approvedschedule will be incorporated into the contract bysupplemental agreement.
SCHEDULED MAINTENANCEAnyrepetitive maintenance action deemed necessary toinsure the functional success of equipment includingperiodic servicing and replacement of time/cyclecomponents.
SHARED EQUIPMENT NEED DATE (SEND)Thedateequipment/GSE t o be used at more than onelocation is required to' support site activationactivities at the secondary location(s). The needdate at the first user's location will be the SiteActivation Need Date (SAND) for that location.
SHOP REPLACEABLE UNIT (SRU)Anyitemwhosereplacement constitutes the optimum,intermediate, or depot level of repair action, i.e., amodule for an LRU which can be removed at anintermediate or depot repair facility.

SPACELABA laboratory designed for space operations andcomposed of modules or pallets suitable foraccommodating instrumentation for conducting researchand application activities on Shuttle Sortie Flights.On a given flight, the Spacelab configuration can becomprised of a module only, a pallet only, or acombination of a module and a pallet.
