Letter from the President and CEO

ON THE COVER: Natalie Grant, Contemporary Christian Music Singer-Songwriter, pictured with Arms of Hope residents before the Dallas Gala.

Help AOH bydonating today!

Arms of Hope is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit Christian organization that was formed by the consolidation of Medina Children’s Home (est. 1958) and Boles Children’s Home (est. 1924). Since the consolidation, Arms of Hope has added an urban application of its Together Program by opening a Duncanville Campus. Arms of Hope offers residential and outreach programs for children and single-mother families who are fleeing poverty, homelessness, abuse, neglect and human trafficking.

The mind of a child is a beautiful thing. I was talking to a sweet little boy, who is a resident on one of our campuses, and realized that he mea-sured time by Curious George episodes. For those of you that haven’t been blessed with Curious George exposure, or overexposure if you have small children, it’s a 30-minute cartoon on PBS about a monkey. “Mama, will we be at home in one or two Curious Georges?” “Mama, only 48 Curious Georges till we go to Sea World!” It is truly one of the most precious things I’ve heard.

Since coming to Arms of Hope, I’ve come to measure time in a different way as well. Annual measurements of: How many of God’s children that were abused, neglected, poverty-stricken and homeless did Arms of Hope provide food, clothing and shelter to? How many counseling hours did we perform to help our residents break destructive generational chains? How many volunteers blessed us with their generous gifts of time and work on an AOH campus? Did our residents make educational gains and graduate from one of our programs? Most importantly, did we share the gospel of Christ and disciple to those in our care? These are some of the many measurements that the leadership and staff at Arms of Hope look at every year to ensure that we are constantly doing everything in our power to transform the lives of those who we have been entrusted to serve. Arms of Hope is honored to present you with the Fiscal Year-2014 Annual Re-port in this publication. This report is information for you, as a dear friend of AOH, to know the services and accomplishments of the last year and to assure you that every dollar generously donated to our ministry is used to truly make a difference in the lives of those in need. On behalf of the Board of Directors, employees and residents of Arms of Hope, I want to thank you for your help in making the last year an incredible one and humbly ask for your continued prayers and generosity. I look forward with wonderful anticipation to what God will do for his children through AOH next year, or in 17,520 Curious Georges from now.

Sincerely,

Troy RobertsonPresident & CEO

How can you help?

How much does each residential program cost?

Arms of Hope’s Medina Campus was filled with joy and excitement on March 1, when its board of directors and lead-ership team, several hundred visitors and campus residents gathered to cele-brate the opening of the new Currey Learning Center.

The Currey Learning Center is a state licensed day care that is being utilized by the children participating in Arms of Hope’s Together Program. The Together Program helps motivated single mothers and their children transition into successful, indepen-dent futures by providing counseling, accountability, parenting skills, career training and a home in a peaceful and safe environment. These mothers are fleeing homelessness, domestic violence, abuse or have lost sustainable support when a death, incarceration or

divorce have occurred and there are no other means of provision. The Currey Learning Center offers a safe, loving and Christian atmosphere for children while their mothers work hard to obtain higher education or attend vocational school to provide a brighter future for their families. The 10,000 square foot building is made up of several classrooms for infants through elementary school, a motor skills room, dining room and audito-rium/gym that offers multiple areas to grow physically, emotionally and spiri-tually. Outside space and equipment were purposely planned to maximize each age group’s skill set and growth potential. The construction of this much needed building has more than tripled Arms of Hope’s capacity to serve chil-dren and allows for long-term growth

of our Together Program. Because of the funding from individ-uals and foundations, Arms of Hope was able to build this brand new facility. Generous donations from Jack & Marie Currey, Jerry & Kay Cox, Dale & Amy Harbison, William Greehey, Mabee Foundation, Ed Rachal Foundation, M.S. Doss Foundation, Dian Graves Owen Foundation, the Road to Emmaus and the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country made this amazing building possible. n

Arms of Hope-Boles Campus cele-brated the opening of its new hospitality center on June 14. Those who attended the reception and open house were able to tour this new construction project funded by special friends of Arms of Hope, Paul and Mary Lou Winkler.

Paul and Mary Lou have been Arms of Hope supporters for many years and we are blessed to have their son, Dr. Tom Winkler, as a current Board Member. The center will host more than 1,000 visitors each year that serve on campus as volunteers or visiting family members of campus residents. More than sixty volunteer groups from churches, col-leges, and businesses come and stay on Arms of Hope campuses to do special projects and minister to the residents. Without their work, we couldn’t keep up with the day-to-day maintenance of

a campus that sits on over 150 acres and where 125 residents and employees live and work every day. Most importantly, the love and support that volunteers show our children and single-mother families truly symbolize the hands and feet of Jesus. These special visitors will now enjoy a 6,200 square foot building that has four bunkrooms and four hotel rooms. There is a common area for games, activities and relaxation. The building is located in close proximity to Arms of Hope’s ROPES course, swim-ming pool, gymnasium and dining room. The building’s location, size and proximity to the other facilities not only make it ideal for groups complet-ing service projects on our campus, but also for group retreats. If you are inter-ested in bringing a group to the Boles Campus, please contact Kelvin Brown at [email protected]. n

7 Reaching Generations

I was always the child that wanted the perfect family. I felt like I was all alone and that no one in this world cared about me. In November 2010, my mom remarried. My step dad was physically abusive towards my sisters and myself but my mother did not know about it. Anytime discipline was needed it wasn’t your normal or typical discipline. After a while the abuse had become so bad that blood and bad bruising was involved. My siblings and I also suffered from neglect and were rarely supplied our daily needs. Due to this I felt forced into shoplifting to get the things we needed so desper-ately. I did eventually get caught and was sent to a Juvenile detention center but was released to go home after my

court date. Once home, I ran away because I didn’t want to be there and couldn’t handle the way things were anymore. Because my mom didn’t know where I was, she reported me as a runaway and I was sent back to the detention center and this is where I felt safe for the first time in a long time. One day I received an interview with Arms of Hope-Boles Campus. I was accepted and since being here at Boles, I have grown spiritually, mentally and emotionally. I have a stronger relation-ship with God and have learned to trust in him. I was baptized in 2012. I have grown so much emotionally and now I am able to trust people and I have begun to open up to people more and share my feelings with others. Being

a resident here at Arms of Hope-Boles Campus has changed me so much for the better and I am eternally grateful that I have the opportunity to continue my stay here at Boles and I hope my story may help others to realize that all that Arms of Hope has to offer because it can change you in so many ways.

When DeMonica came to the Boles Campus, the probation officer spoke to Kelvin Brown, the campus minister. The probation officer was discussing her behavior with Kelvin and said, “We do not have a lot of hope for this one.” God had different plans for this young lady at Arms of Hope. n

Residential Child Care Program

Resident Spotlight - DeMonica

Arms of Hope’s Residential Child Care Program meets disadvantaged children’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs, while living with house parents in a warm, family-like environment.

My name is Kamille and I am a junior at Schreiner University and have been a resident of Arms of Hope for almost 10 years. I lived in a cottage in Residential Care for 7 years and have been involved in the college and career program for the past 2 years. Nothing can measure up to the love and support the staff at Arms of Hope has shown me over the years. Growing up I was a child of domestic violence. My parents loved my siblings and I, and of course I loved them more than anything. But they had many problems of their own including the abuse of drugs and alcohol. This, of course, amplified their aggression towards each other and often times me. At the age of 4, I was forced to become the adult of my family, having to protect my 2 year old brother from my parent’s violent fights. I can recall many nights where I would hide us under my bed in the dark, soothing my brother while he

get worse. I bottled all my feelings up inside and tried not to show weak-ness. I put up walls around my heart and trusted no one. I spent the next several years in and out of foster care. Although my parents had many prob-lems, I knew they at least loved me and that there was nothing worse than being separated from the only family I knew. When I was 9, my mother was forced to enter rehabilitation for her alcohol-ism and my hopes of ever becoming a family were shattered yet again. Somehow I was still optimistic, until my dad passed away a few months later. At this point I was furious with God. In fact, I hated him. I wanted nothing to do with a God who would put my family through so much pain. In 2005, my mother gave up her custody and we were adopted. Heartbroken that I had lost my mom and dad within only a few years, I rebelled. After all, the only way I learned to express my feel-ings was through anger and aggression. My adopted parents didn’t know how to respond to my behavior and their rash disciplinary methods only made me want to rebel more. After about a year of having me in their home, they decided to send me away. Once again the feeling of neglect washed over me and I remembered back to the hurtful words of my foster parents, “you are unlovable.”

When I was first placed in the program at Arms of Hope, I was an angry, aggressive, and very stubborn 12 year old. I was rebellious and tested all the limits. I had never been in a safe, loving, long term environment where people truly wanted to see me succeed. After a few years of living at Arms of Hope, I started to see that God had always had a plan for me and that I was right where he had always intended for me to be. I quickly realized that I desired a relationship with God. After much thought and guidance I decided to give my life to God and I was bap-tized. Today, I am a successful college student majoring in biology with plans of one day becoming a pediatrician. Arms of Hope has become my home, the one place that never gave up on me. They have given me the greatest gift I never thought possible. Unconditional Love. n

cried and waiting there for hours while my parents viciously fought. Around this time, my brother and I were placed in the foster care program and from that moment on, I was shuttled from foster home to foster home and then back to an unstable home until I was adopted in 2005. Growing up in foster care was horrifying. I had never felt so alone and scared in my life. During the years I spent in foster care, I endured every form of abuse you could possibly think of. Although the physical abuse was a horrific experience, the verbal abuse is what would affect me the most, later in life. I was not only scared for myself but also for my brother. I knew that it was my job to protect him. After all, who else would? I remember crying out to God every night asking him to protect me and to bring my family back together. No matter how hard or how often I prayed things only seemed to

I would like to share with you a story about a nobody, a life that no one would claim. Before my son and I moved into Arms of Hope-Medina Campus, we lived in an emergency shelter for women and children in abusive situa-tions. It was there that I realized it was time for me to do whatever I needed to do to give my son the kind of life he deserved and I had only dreamed of.I was born in Port Arthur and just about a year to the day, my birth mother died. She had been flung into the highway by my father and then run over by 3 or 4 other vehicles. I was taken to Louisiana to live with my stepmom. I don’t remember much of my father afterwards and the times I do recall were never pleasant. I remember one time I stood up to him with a hot iron in my hand to protect my step-mom and said, “Daddy, don’t you hit my

momma anymore.” I was 4 years old. I left when I was 18 years old. I had accepted by now that I was slow, stupid and that I would probably end up like my drug addicted mother, the woman who I had to blame for making me the child of an affair that no one wanted. Or, I might turn out like my father, the abusive alcoholic and pathological liar.I ended up in the emergency shelter and that is where I lost my second child. She was 13 days old and gasping for air and I had no family members there to tell me it was going to be okay or just, “Hey, I love you.” I turned the machines off and she was reunited with her Father in Heaven where she would always be wanted and loved. It was in that shelter that I started gasping for air asking God if He could renew my strength and get me out of this dark hole.I asked the director of the shelter and she

recommended Arms of Hope-Medina Campus. She said it’s a wonderful program but you had to respect and follow the rules. Being accepted was like a gun at the starting line of a new race in my life! I have now obtained my GED, my past and what people say about me no longer dictate my future. My wonderful 9-year old son is more amazing here than I could’ve ever imagined. The employees are won-derful people in my life that I love and call my family and they love me back. I call my case manager and the direc-tor, mom 1 and mom 2. This God sent safe haven will be where I call home until I graduate from college with my X-Ray technician certificate. Arms of Hope is a place for the unwanted. My name is Antoniette, my son is Jebe-diah and we are the blessed beautiful SOMEBODIES of Arms of Hope.n

Arms of Hope’s Family Outreach Program is thriving in the Dallas and San Antonio areas with plans to expand to Denton and Houston in the next six months. The program was created for inner-city poverty stricken families who are in desperate need of physical, emotional and spiritual resources. The program allows the family to stay in their community and their children to continue attending school by providing immediate physical needs of food, rent and clothing. Wanting to go deeper and provide the holistic healing that truly transforms a life, Arms of Hope does so much more than just take care of a person’s physical needs. Invaluable long-term resources such as in-depth case management, needs assessments, counseling and family workshop sessions tackle the emotional trauma of history of abuse and neglect. To ensure true transformation, Arms of Hope

makes sure that each client is intro-duced to Christ through prayer, study and referral to a church. Community partnerships with churches, schools and non-profits are essential for success. Over 100 families in each location are served by this wonderful ministry. For those that need a fresh start and must leave their community due to extreme abuse, Arms of Hope is able to refer them to one of our campuses. We are so excited about the results of this program over the last two years and look forward to expanding into Denton and Houston. God is truly using these centers to change the lives of the disad-vantaged and broken hearted. “The Arms of Hope caseworker, Francezca, drove a very pregnant mom to the Arms of Hope-Medina Campus before her baby’s delivery just two days later. The mom was in a crisis situa-

tion, came to Christian Hope Resource Center for help, and began working one-on-one with Arms of Hope. Arms of Hope was the perfect place for this new mom who had no where else to go. The families that Arms of Hope works with, typically single moms, become more engaged than many of our general clients. This is because Francezca walks beside them on their journey. She makes the families she serves feel safe and cared for. When we have a single mom with several chil-dren in crisis, we don’t have to send the clients down the road hoping they will be loved, accepted and cared for. We can just call Francezca on-site to work with them and because she is on staff with AOH, she can provide special-ized in-depth needs immediately. The fluid process and strong partnership helps ensure that families in crisis will be cared for and be served in a way that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.” Megan Legacy- Executive Director of Christian Hope Resource Center and Community Partner of Arms of Hope n

The Residential Child Care Program meets disadvantaged children’s physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs in a warm family-like atmosphere where house parents function as mother and father figures. Residents range in age from 5 to 18 and live in cottages with eight to ten children. Arms of Hope provides for children’s basic daily needs includ-ing shelter, food, clothing, counsel-ing, supervision and education.

OUTREACH PROGRAMFamily Outreach Centers provide physical, emotional and spiritual assistance to underprivileged chil-dren and families in their own neighborhoods, which are some of the most financially distressed urban areas in Texas including San Antonio, Dallas and soon to open in Houston and Denton. As well as provide short-term immediate assistance to prevent homelessness, hunger and disconnected utilities, invaluable long-term resources such as in-depth case management, needs assessments, counseling and family workshops are provided to help change a person’s future. All clients receive prayer, Bible study and church referrals. For those suf-fering from extreme abuse, Arms of Hope residential campuses become their new home.

RESIDENTIAL CHILD CAREPROGRAM The Together Program helps mo-

tivated single mothers and their children transition into successful, independent futures by providing counseling, accountability, parent-ing skills, career training and a home in a peaceful and safe environment. These mothers are fleeing homeless-ness, domestic violence, abuse or have lost sustainable support when a death, incarceration or divorce have occurred and there are no other means of provision. Arms of Hope has also begun adding urban appli-cations of its Together Program by opening a campus in Duncanville, Texas, and has plans to open addi-tional Together Program campuses in other urban areas across the state.

TOGETHER PROGRAM

COLLEGE & CAREERPROGRAM

The College and Career Program provides assistance for Arms of Hope high school graduates with support through college, trade school or into their first job and of-ten includes accommodations for graduates who have not yet found a place to call home.

RIGHT START PROGRAMThe Right Start Program helps ex-pectant single mothers prepare for motherhood while providing shelter, necessities and skills needed to care for their newborn babies. It serves as an entry point for women coming into the Together Program who de-sire to be a parent and learn how to establish a healthy family environ-ment for their children.

Through church services, devotionals and other frequent spiritual devel-opment opportunities, each year 25-30 residents become new followers of Christ. Each child and single-mother at Arms of Hope encounters grace, mercy and unconditional love that truly changes lives.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

In 2014, Arms of Hope hosted 66 different volun-teer groups, 1,350 people

and 23,808 volunteer hours! Arms of Hope is so thankful

for its volunteers.

Scholarships - Many of the children and single-mother families we care for have the desire, ability and need to further their education. Sometimes the only missing ingredient is the necessary resources. You can help Arms of Hope make certain no one in our care is ever deprived of quality education by providing funding for scholarships for our resi-dents.

Sponsor a Child or Family in Our Care - Taking care of essential needs like clothing, food, school supplies and household items is es-sential. The children and families in our care benefit immensely when you show you care by financially supporting the procurement of items essential to them. Sponsorship programs are available for all giving levels.

Planned Giving - Discover new ways to make a gift that also takes into consideration your personal circumstances and the needs of your heirs including Wills, Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts and Charitable Lead Trusts, etc. Explore the value of charitable gifts that require a little thought, but pay off in big benefits to you, your family and Arms of Hope. Send inquiries to [email protected].

Monetary Donations - All general donations support the programs of care provided by Arms of Hope and can be one time gifts or can be scheduled as reoccurring gifts. Donate online at ArmsofHope.org.

Volunteer - Arms of Hope welcomes over sixty groups per year. To bring your group to Arms of Hope, please inquire online at Armsof-Hope.org.

third day GRAMMY AWARD WINNING CHRISTIAN BAND

THIRD DAYperformed an evening of

inspiration forArms of Hope

Supporters and Residentsin Houston

On October 13, around five hundred individuals assembled at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Houston for the annual Arms of Hope Reaching Gen-erations Gala. The special musical talent for this event was THIRD DAY.

During nearly two decades in the spot-light, the members of THIRD DAY have seen God’s truth become evident over and again and they testify to that truth on their latest album entitled “Miracle.” It is the latest collection in a long, impressive body of work that has earned THIRD DAY four GRAMMYs (11 total nominations) 24 GMA Dove Awards (42 total nominations)1 RIAA Platinum album and 8 RIAA Gold albums. Over the years, the Georgia-based band’s music has provided a vibrant soundtrack in the lives of this generation of believers. “Show Me Your Glory,” “I Believe,” “Cry Out to Jesus,” “Mountain of God,” “Call My Name,” “Born Again” and “Trust in Jesus” are just a handful of the THIRD DAY hits that have inspired and uplifted audiences around the world. Of course, the band loves to perform

and entertain, but most importantly they want to offer hope and encour-agement. As a Christian non-profit that offers hope and encouragement to hundreds of children and single-mother families who are in desperate need of holding on to faith, partner-ing with THIRD DAY was an easy and exciting choice for Arms of Hope. Over one-hundred residents and staff members traveled to Houston from the Arms of Hope - Medina Campus to take part in this amazing event. Antoinette, a single mother in the Together Program on the Medina Campus, shared her story.

“I would like to share with you a story about a nobody, a life that no one would claim. Before my son and I moved into Arms of Hope-Medina Campus, we lived in an emergency shelter for women and children in abusive situa-tions. It was there that I realized it was time for me to do whatever I needed to do to give my son the kind of life he deserved, and I had only dreamed of,” Antoinette stated. She told the

audience that now she believes she is a “someone” and that her dreams for herself and her son are being real-ized with the love and support that she found at Arms of Hope.

Justin, who is seven years old and has lived on the Medina Campus for five years, shared his blessings with the audience.

“I like my friends at Arms of Hope. Their names are Ollie, Cynthia and Jay. I like the new daycare and the play-ground. I love that I get to eat oranges, peaches and strawberries! I even get my own bed to sleep in. My little brother lives here, too. I kinda love him. My friend Joel is the minister and he tells me about Jesus. Jesus is really cool and he died on a cross for me.”

A great time was had by all during this wonderful event and between the resi-dent stories and the uplifting concert, supporters continue to tell us the impact that this inspirational night had on their own lives. n

Natalie Grant Captivated the Audienceat the Dallas Gala with her Beautiful Voice

& Songs of Encouragement

On September 27, almost six-hundred guests gathered at the Dallas Hilton Anatole for the annual Arms of Hope Reaching Generations Gala. Guests enjoyed an intimate concert with Grammy nominated artist Natalie Grant.

Natalie is a powerhouse vocalist, heart-gripping songwriter and amazing performer. She has consistently remained as one of the top selling Christian artists with over 3 million in sales. The Gospel Music Association named her the 2012 Female Vocal-ist of the Year, an honor that she’s received five times. Natalie’s latest

album, “Hurricane,” debuted at #1 on the Christian Billboard Charts in the fall of 2013. Beyond her artistry, she is an outspoken advocate for victims of human trafficking. In 2005, Natalie founded the organization Abolition International which recently grew with a merger into Hope for Justice Interna-tional. This organization is committed to providing quality restorative after-care to human trafficking victims both domestically and internationally. As a domestic organization that provides healing to many individuals who have experienced the horrors of trafficking, Arms of Hope was delighted to partner with Natalie. Seventy-five residents

and employees from our Duncan-ville and Boles Campuses were able to attend the event and were inspired by Natalie’s music and her message of hope. Multiple Board members attended and participated in the evening. Guests were invited to take a piece of history home with them. The centerpieces were designed from wood slices that came from a tree that fell on the Boles campus. The Boles Campus was estab-lished in 1924 and many of the guests at this event are long time supporters and loved the idea of taking a piece of Boles home with them. n

21 Reaching Generations

On June 7, almost three-hundred indi-viduals gathered for the annual Arms of Hope Reaching Generations Gala in San Antonio at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa. Guests enjoyed the musical talent of Jason Castro.

Jason Castro is a Christian Singer-Song Writer and American Idol Season Seven Semi - finalist. This mellow Texan with blue eyes and a bright smile released his first full-length Word Records album, “Only A Mountain,” finding himself the chance to rejoice alongside a broad new audience of fellow believers. The songs on “Only A Mountain” are fueled by “the realiza-tion that life is beautiful,” Castro says. “It’s a lifestyle philosophy that I carry: What good can we do today? How can we be a light in the challenging world in which we currently live?” When he hit the stage for the seventh season of American Idol, he’d only been singing for a year and a half. “I don’t know if I ever had an indication that I was meant to be a musician, or good enough to do it professionally,” Castro laughs of taking the Idol plunge.

His 2010 self-titled debut on Atlantic Records entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at No. 18, and spawned the international hit “Let’s Just Fall In Love Again” – a No. 1 single in Norway, Singapore and the Philippines. Jason joined the I Am Second campaign in Dallas, speaking publicly about his faith for the first time since gaining national attention, and the Christian

community began to take an interest in his message. Later that year, Atlantic and Word teamed up to re-release his debut as “Who I Am,” this time featur-ing five new faith-based songs.

“As I started venturing down that road, I found a lot of fulfillment,” he says of combining his Christian faith and music career. “We get to play in front of thou-sands of people singing every word to my songs,” Castro says. “I think as a kid, sometimes you discredit Christian music because it’s churchy and not cool,” he says, speaking from personal experience… “It really inspired me to think maybe I could reach a kid who doesn’t think Christian music is cool. Maybe I can get him or her to listen to the music with a fresh approach?”

This focus is why Arms of Hope was so excited that seventy-five residents were able to attend this exciting event to hear Jason perform. Ten of our younger children even joined Jason on stage to perform “Hallelujah”which was a high-light of the evening and can be viewed on our website.

“There’s hope here for everyone. I think that’s what comes out in my songs, regardless of where you come from or where you are in life or what you’re going through,” stated Jason.

Fred Bergman presented the Stuart and Grace Bergman Service Award to Freebirds World Burrito for going above and beyond in blessing the resi-dents of Arms of Hope.

The crowd heard an inspiring testi-mony from a Medina Campus resident, Kamille. She is a junior at Schreiner University and has been a resident of Arms of Hope for almost ten years. Kamille lived in the Residential Child Care cottages for seven years and has been involved in the College and Career program for the past two years.

Kamille stated, “Nothing can measure up to the love and support the staff at Arms of Hope has shown me over the years. When I was first placed at Arms of Hope I was an angry, aggres-sive and a very stubborn 12 year-old. I had never been in a safe, loving, long term environment where people truly wanted to see me succeed. After a year of stability and support, I started to see all that I was capable of. My heart had finally begun to heal after years of pain. Arms of Hope has become my home, the one place that never gave up on me. They have given me the greatest gift I never thought possible. Unconditional Love.”

The San Antonio gala guests were truly touched by the stories and songs they heard on this amazing evening. n

The highlight of the night was when Arms of Hope children sang “Hallelujah” with Jason Castro.

as beacons of joy and love. The rela-tionship began when Annette Beavers, Director of Social Responsibility, heard about the amazing work at Arms of Hope.

“From the moment we toured the Boles Campus, we knew there was some-thing genuinely special about Arms of Hope. We also knew that our Freebirds Tribe and fanatics would appreciate the opportunity to get involved and con-tribute to the efforts of serving Arms of Hope children and families. The experience we have had with this part-nership has truly been an honor and we have been incredibly inspired. We look forward to further impacting this won-derful organization,” stated Annette.

Once they decided to help, they jumped right in and became a part of our family. Last Christmas, large groups of employees from multiple stores, or Tribes as Freebirds calls them, came to the Medina and Boles Campus to cook burritos for hundreds of our children and staff. They also sang Christ-mas carols and helped fill the massive need for each child to have a wonder-ful Christmas by bringing each one of them a gift. This in and of itself would have been a huge blessing, but Free-birds does everything a little bit bigger and better and decided to “adopt” each one of our single-mother families on all three of our campuses (Medina, Boles and Duncanville.) This “adoption” meant that over 60 single-mother fami-

Volunteers are a vital part of the services offered at Arms of Hope. Each year, 1,350 volunteers provide almost 24,000 hours of their time and resources. The love and support that our residents receive from volunteers truly make a difference in helping heal and transform many lives. Arms of Hope sends a huge thank you to every single volunteer and we are honored to highlight one particular group that has gone above and beyond in their gener-osity.

You might know them as just having great burritos and customer service, but to the children and single mothers at Arms of Hope, Freebirds and their employees throughout Texas are known

lies went to Freebirds locations all over the state where they were treated like royalty. Not only were they given food and gifts, but the real treat was the way that each Tribe treated the families with love and respect, which is something that these families didn’t receive much of before coming to Arms to Hope.

“Freebirds went above and beyond! The employees made us feel like we were part of their family. Our Christmas could not have been complete without the love we received from Freebirds,” stated Leana, AOH Together Program resident.

Arms of Hope was able to extend thanks by awarding Freebirds with the “Stuart and Grace Bergman Service Award” at the annual San Antonio Reaching Generations Gala and Silent Auction. “Freebirds has been a won-derful example of how volunteers can truly make a tremendous impact on the lives of those who are in desperate need of unconditional love and generosity. Our residents come from such a history of abuse, neglect, homelessness and rejection, but the wonderful employees at Freebirds showed them that there are people in this world who want to help them and give them the honor and respect they deserve,” said Troy Rob-

ertson, AOH President and CEO.

The relationship continues to grow with Freebirds naming Arms of Hope as one of its “Community Partners” at the grand opening of a new store in Tyler. Anyone who was willing to donate at least $5 to Arms of Hope was treated to free food. Needless to say, the food offered at Freebirds was a huge hit and this event allowed Freebirds to make a substantial financial donation. This is just another creative way that this company decided to give back to those in need. What does the future hold for this partnership? With Freebirds, you know it’s going to be big! n

Pauline Gertrude Ashby was born in Corinth, Mississippi and lived in the Bonham area for 12 years after moving from Oklahoma. She was married to Thomas LaRue Ashby and had 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchil-dren. She was loved by everyone who knew her and was affectionately known as “Aunt Polly.” Aunt Polly loved to entertain and enjoyed her hobbies of gar-dening, painting, ceramics, and sewing clothes for family and friends. She was a very active member at Northside Church of Christ and served as the “Master of Entertainment” each year when North-side would host residents from the Arms of Hope-Boles Campus for dinner before the Kueckelhan Rodeo. She would often dress as Minnie Pearl and was lively and wonderful host. The residents at the Boles Campus have fond memories of her singing songs, playing games and telling jokes. Aunt Polly truly brought joy to children in desperate need for someone to show them the love of Christ “Ms. Polly was an extraordinary person. She always showed love to everyone. Her smile was contagious and her faith was something to follow. She was always looking to make someone laugh with her wit and hilarious characters, especially Minnie Pearl. Ms. Polly was a great christian who helped you see Jesus through her life.”- Kyle Beard, Youth Minister, Northside Church of Christ n

David Earl Capps, affectionately known as “Butch”, was born on December 4, 1940 to Jess Willard and Marion Capps in Birmingham, Alabama. The Capps family moved to East Texas in 1953 where David attended New Diana High School, Kilgore College and the University of Texas at Arlington. David was married to Glenda Martin Capps for 55 years and they had three children and three grand children. David led a very active life. He enjoyed backpacking and mountain climbing. He climbed seven mountains and hiked the Grand Canyon. He was dedicated to his family spending time watching his grand-children play sports and traveling with his wife. He was known for his commitment and love for the Lord, serving Him in all that he did. He was a deacon, elder and charter member at the Pine Tree Church of Christ and at the time of his passing he was a member of the Longview Church of Christ. He was a regular volunteer for the Caring & Sharing Benevolent Center and participated in other benevo-lent programs in his community. He was instrumental in coordinating the annual Longview Charity Drive Golf tournament for over ten years that raised funds for the mission of Arms of Hope. David’s sense of humor and love of telling jokes will be dearly missed. He passed away October 18, 2014 after battling cancer bravely for four and half years. n

Edith Faye Hubbard Randel was born in Alba, Texas, and was raised and received her education at Boles Home. She lived in Huntsville, Texas for many years and her family and friends say that she often talked about her wonderful years at Boles Home with fondness. Edith was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Stephen Vincent Randel, who she met at Sam Houston State from where they both graduated. Edith was a homemaker, an educator, she served in prison ministry and was a volunteer for mental health services. She was also an active member of Huntsville Church of Christ for decades and in describing her life mantra, minister Matt Springfield said, “The thing that keeps coming back to me is she would often say, ‘there is a lot I don’t know but I know this, that I love Jesus and he loves me!’” Laverne Warner, a life-long friend and fellow church member described her by saying, “Edith would often comment about how blessed we were. She was an appreciative woman, giving of her time and talents as she could. To me, Edith defined Jesus’s command to love one another.” In Edith’s honor, the Huntsville Church of Christ hosted a Christmas in July gift card drive, collecting gift cards that will be used to purchase Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, and school supplies for Arms of Hope resi-dents. Edith’s legacy will remain for many years to come in the lives she impacted in her volunteer work, as an educator, and in all of those she met. n

Susan “Sue” Lynn McDon-ald was born on November 4, 1953 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Louis and Gloria Fischer. Sue spent twenty-eight years of her life living in Garland, Texas. She was a teacher, librarian and educator for more than twenty-five years. Sue married Bob McDonald in 1976, and they had three sons, one daughter and five grandchildren. Arms of Hope held a special place in Sue’s heart just as Sue held a special place in our hearts. She orga-nized a group of women from North Pointe Church of Christ in Sachse, Texas, who spent countless hours together making quilts for the children

on Arms of Hope’s campuses. Each quilt was made with detail and love by the loving hands of these special ladies and they have been cherished by many children throughout the years. One of Sue’s friends from the group says, “When Sue heard that after her second battle with cancer and the associated chemo treatments were in a pause mode, she made a promise. It was her dream to make children happy. She had heard about some wonder-ful children on the Medina campus through a lady in her Bible study long before her battle began. So Sue said, “I want to make quilts for the sweet chil-dren at Medina.” She did just that. Sue continued to make quilts through four more bouts with cancer and the chemo treatments that followed. She would hand quilt her beautiful pieces while in the hospital. Her husband, Bob, would bring the right color of thread, or swap out quilts for her so she could keep going. Sue would often smile about a certain fabric she was working on and wonder what this child receiving it was like--in her words, “they were all amazing!” She would say a prayer over the quilts before they left for Medina and ask that these children would feel comforted.

The children of Medina supported and loved her so much (although they never met). They would send her handmade cards and notes of love while she was ill. Being a school teacher her whole life, there could not be a kinder form of love. Another friend from the group states that “It is a privilege to be able to make these quilts and it is a way for us to forever honor Sue. We continue to use material that Sue donated in these quilts and sew them with love.” Arms of Hope is most grateful to Sue and to these wonderful, loving Christian ladies who continue her legacy today. n

MAKING A GIFT OF CAPITAL ASSETS

YOUR BENEFITS...Almost anything you own can be used to make a gift to charity – stocks, your home, furniture, stamp or coin collections, jewelry, precious metals.

When your giving is not limited to cash, you may discover power and ability you didn’t realize you had. By giving a capital asset to Arms of Hope:

You pay no capital gains and healthcare taxes. The asset is no longer part of your estate, possi-bly lowering estate taxes.

You save the expenses of maintaining, insuring or repairing the asset.

You receive an income tax deduction. You receive the satisfaction and joy of knowing your asset is going to help Arms of Hope.

There are many ways that you can still help Arms of Hope’s work and benefit yourself through a planned gift.

The resources on our website can help you save on taxes today and increase your income through a variety of lifetime plans.

To learn more about the benefits of making a planned gift, please email us at [email protected].

A great way to recycle your usable clothes, furniture& household items to help AOH

As part of the Affordable Healthcare Act individuals and couples meeting certain income thresholds now must

pay a 3.8% tax on investment income. That’s in addition to capital gains taxes, which are also now taxed up to 20%.

Although taxes have increased, you can lower your tax bill this year by transferring your appreciated assets to a chari-table remainder trust. You will avoid taxes, create income for you and your family and help our organization. Call, e-mail or visit our website to request a free illustration showing your potential benefits.

Don’t let the Healthcare Tax

get you

A bequest of your life insur-ance policy is an easy way for you to make a gift to us.

It’s as easy as naming Arms of Hope as beneficiary of all or a portion of your policy on your beneficiary designation form.

Your life insurance proceeds will help further our work, and your estate will benefit from an estate tax charitable deduction for the value of the proceeds paid.

Please consider leaving a last-ing legacy to help Arms of Hope continue it’s efforts to end the destructive cycles of homelessness, abuse, neglect and human trafficking.
