FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Open Day
It was lovely to meet so many parents, families and friends
of Erko at our recent Open Day. My thanks to Ms
Hopkinson for her organization, Ms Logan and Mr
Lonsdale for their work with Erko Voices and to the many
staff who made the day a success. I thought our leaders
did an exceptional job in opening proceedings, well done
team!
Parent Meetings
This week our parent meetings commence. Meetings are
scheduled for the next two weeks. In mentioning parent
teacher meetings, I would strongly encourage that any
meetings be booked if you require an ‘in depth’ discussion
as all teachers have planning, marking, staff meetings and
committee meetings to attend as well as professional
development at other sites / schools which occasionally
means leaving the school premises as close to bell time as
possible.
Book Week Parade
This Wednesday is our book week parade. We will begin
our day with a parade followed by activities in classes.
Books will be available for families to purchase on the day
before the parade between 8:30–9:00am and directly
after the parade until 11:00am. Also in the afternoon
from 2:30 – 3:30pm. Also on Friday 23 August 8:30-
9:30am and in the afternoon from 2:30 – 3:30pm.
Twilight Learning
Last week all staff were involved in professional
development around growth, mindset coaching and
mentoring with ‘Cut Through Consulting’; these sessions
will continue into early term 4.
Hats
Summer and hotter weather will be here soon and I want
to reiterate the importance of wearing a hat. Department
sun safe policy is for hats that cover the face, neck and
ears. Any variation of this is not compliant with this
policy. Please discuss this issue and the associated health
costs with your children. Shortly we will be implementing
a reward system for those students who wear their hats in
the way they were designed.

INTRODUCTION TO iPLAY
iPLAY is a school-based program conducted by Australian Catholic University and the University of
Newcastle, and is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and NSW Department
of Education.
iPLAY aims to promote children’s physical activity through implementing a whole-of-school approach.
iPLAY involves 6 key components: 1) quality physical education and school sport, 2) classroom
movement breaks, 3) physically active homework, 4) active playgrounds, 5) community physical activity
links and 6) parent/caregiver engagement.
Over the next 2 school terms a section will be dedicated to iPLAY in our school newsletter. This section
will have information and ideas for promoting physical activity and fundamental movement skill
development in children.
HOUSE POINTS
Well done to Parkes house - winners of the
school athletics carnival with 626 points,
closely followed by Ingram, Knight and Cusack
houses.
MULTICULTURAL PUBLIC SPEAKING REGIONAL FINALS
Emily M and Andrew K competed in the finals of the Regional
Public Speaking.
Both students did well to reach the finals with a large number
of students competing.
Congratulations Emily and Andrew, you did Erko proud!
Training Band
Focus on ‘Skip to My Lou’ and ‘Aura Lee.’ We are also going to be looking at ‘Frere Jacques’ and ‘Old MacDonald had a Band’
Don’t stress if you feel like these songs are too hard for you. Remember clapping/singing rhythms can help! Focus on becoming really confident with the first five notes; reading them and playing them on your instrument. Do your best to make a strong, clear sound. Remember regular practice will help you improve! And don’t forget to participate in the practice challenge this term!
Intermediate Band
Keep working on ‘Roman Juggernaut’. Take extra care if you spot any bars that begin with a 1 count rest! Remember to practise our dynamics at the end – we need to get soft in order to get louder effectively!
Two new pieces will be given out this week – ‘Hawaii Five O’ and ‘William Tell Overture’, good job sight reading them last rehearsal!
Concert Band
“Mah-na mah-na” is starting to sound good! If you have the musical phrase “Mah-na mah-na” be sure to play it nice and loud! Work on the dynamics near the end!
“Oye Como Va” the rhyme we have to remember for the rhythm of bars 5-8 is:
Push on afterwards from bar 9 playing slowly at home
Practice Tip from Marcus (sax tutor) before he leaves us to study overseas:
The most important things to focus on in practice are being productive, regularity, consistency and repetition. And devise a practice schedule and stick to it!
ERKO BAND NEWS
CLAY POTS FOR ERKO BERZERKO
Kindergarten and stage 1 students joined their parents
and carers on Wednesday afternoon to make clay pots
for the plant stall, just one of the stalls that will be at
Erko Berzerko - Saturday 2 November.
KINDERGARTEN 2020
We are now taking enrolments for Kindergarten 2020.
Siblings who will be 5 years old before 31 July 2020 are eligible to enrol.
If you know of any families with children living in the school’s catchment area (if unsure of
catchment - please ring the school office with their address), please let them know that they can
access the Application to Enrol in a NSW Government School from our school website or pick one up
from the school office. It is important that the school is aware of all siblings, local and non-local,
intending to start Kindergarten in 2020.
Our ‘Transition to Schools’ program for children enrolling at Erskineville PS in 2020 will commence
this term with an Information evening to be held on Wednesday 11 September, followed by three
Transition Days in October, November and December .
TERM 3 STATEMENTS
We are in the process of preparing Term 3 Statement
of Accounts. These will be emailed to families via the
School Bytes program later this week.
The statements will have a direct link to enable
payment to be made through the Payment Online
system (POP). This is the preferred method of
payment.
You can also go to the school website and click on
‘Make a Payment’ to pay accounts. Only details
needed are student name, amount and name of
excursion or activity (don’t worry about the reference
number).
Reminder: The School Bytes program now allows for a
second parent to receive a copy of the Statement of
Account.
Currently this is NOT an automated process. If you
would like emails sent to BOTH parents, please advise
the office by email [email protected]
or phone 9557 5206.
