'Femininity with dignity' Pope sees Mary as universal By John Thavis VATICAN CITY (NC) — In an encyclical dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, Pope John Paul II described Mary's life as an image of obedience and freedom, a model of "femininity with dignity" and an inspiration to Christian unity. The 114-page document, titled "Redemptoris Mater" (Mother of the Redeemer), said Mary, as the "first to believe," is a guide for the church and a "point of reference" for all humani- ty. The encyclical emphasized Mary as the "common mother" of Catholics and Orthodox Christians and took particular note of Mary's place among Christians living in various parts of the Soviet Union. It also stressed the value of Marian devotions. The encyclical, the pope's sixth, was issued at the Vatican March 25, the feast of the Annunciation. A personal touch of our present Holy Father there is a small image of Our Lady of Czestochowa, Patroness of Poland. The Holy Father is very devout and \Abp. McCarthy recollected as he celebrates the Eucharist. The liturgy was in English. Some seminarians from the North American College led us in singing some familiar Latin hymns. Four religious Sisters who care for the Pope's household also joined us. After the Eucharist, the Holy Father greeted each of us individually and posed for a group picture. I must say I felt thrilled when His Holiness recognized me with the greeting, "Hello Miami," and also recalled a communication we had had. We met in five sessions of about three hours each. His Holiness personally participated in two of the sessions. In others, we met with Cardinals and Archbishops of his staff. We met in the Sala Bologna, one of many beautiful halls in the Vatican complex, reached off an inner courtyard (San Damiano) by an elevator (third floor). of my brother American Bishops, winging our way home after the marvelousexperience of spending a week in Rome with the Holy Father and with high officialsof the Church. USCC: Catholic Klansmen violate church ethicWASHINGTON (NC) — Catholics who join the

Ku Klux Klan and organizations that activelypromote racism "act in violation of Catholic teach-ing," said the Administrative Board of the U.S.Catholic Conference.

"These organizations are a scandalous contra-diction to all that we hold sacred and teach in thename of Jesus Christ," a board statement said.

The 50-bishop board, which guides the USCC be-tween annual meetings of the entire body of U.S.bishops, issued the statement in late March.

The board adopted its statement on racist organ-izations because of recent "significant activity byand publicity about the Ku Klux Klan and severalother racist organizations."

Incidents of racial confrontation and violence invarious parts of the country "suggest the extent towhich racial divisions and prejudice continue to existin our social, economic and cultural life," thebishops said.

Two highly publicized racial confrontations oc-curred in recent months in New York City and For-syth County, Ga.

In December, three black men passing through thewhite New York neighborhood of Howard Beachwere attacked by whites. In January, 400 Ku KluxKlansmen and supporters threw bottles, rocks andmud at about 75 participants in an interracialbrotherhood march in Forsyth County.

"Every institution that bears the name Catholicshould proclaim to all that the sin of racism defilesthe image of God and degrades the sacred dignity ofhumankind," the bishops said in their statement.

Surgeon General allowsabortions for AIDS victims

WASHINGTON (NC) — U.S. Surgeon GeneralC. Everett Koop affirmed his opposition to abortionwhile allowing abortion referrals for pregnantwomen with AIDS — acquired immune deficiencysyndrome. In an interview with National CatholicNews Service, Koop also urged church efforts inAIDS and sex education. His comments followedcriticism that he had dropped his longstandingrepudiation of abortion. In a forum at the NationalPress Club he had discussed the possibility of afemale AIDS victim being pregnant and commented,"If you wanted to give her all the possibilities thatwere available to her, you would have to mentionabortion." He told NC News that he had added,"But I would not advise it."

Bishop Roach: Church must useits voice to support farmers

ST. PAUL, Minn. (NC) — As the United Statesdevelops its food and farm policies, the church mustraise its voice in support of justice and morality,said Archbishop John Roach of St. Paul- ;,Minneapolis. "The dignity of people living out theirlives is affected by the farm crisis," said the arch-bishop, who is chairman of the U.S. bishops' newTask Force on Food and Farm Policy. The taskforce, including 11 bishops and nine specialists infood and farm issues, met for an organizationalmeeting in St. Paul. In an interview after the meet-ing with the Catholic Bulletin, newspaper of the St.Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese, Archbishop Roachsaid the task force will focus on four issues: educa-tion, policy development and research, advocacy andpastoral outreach.

Minnesota bishops push forbill to raise minimum wage

ST. PAUL, Minn. (NC) — Arguing for"minimum conditions of human dignity," theCatholic bishops of Minnesota have urged theirLegislature to pass a bill which would raise theminimum wage from $3.35 an hour to $4.35 overthe next two-and-a-half years. The state's eightbishops called the proposed increase "a needed anti-poverty strategy." They said inflation has eaten up aquarter of the minimum wage since it was lastraised.

USCC: Aliens law mustchange to be effective

WASHINGTON (NC) — Unless changes aremade in newjy revised alien legalization regulations,many who were meant to benefit from the 1986 im-migration reform law "will remain in the shadowsof society," said a U.S. Catholic Conference official.If approved, the regulations could "frustrate boththe intent and the spirit" of the new law, said Msgr.Nicholas DiMarzio, executive director of theUSCC's Migration and Refugee Services, in a state-ment. He was commenting on the second draft ofproposed regulations for implementation of the im-migration reform law.

Basketball star's coke use storydid not hurt school—spokesman

PHILADELPHIA (NC) — Gary McLain, a starguard on the Villanova University basketball teamthat won the 1985 National Collegiate Athletic As-sociation title, harmed himself more than the schoolwith his admission of using cocaine during theteam's championship season, said a universityspokesman. Jury awards injured womanin abortion clinic attack case

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (NC) — A jury awarded$117,500 to Kathryn Wood for injuries she said shereceived when Benedictine Father Edward Markleyattacked a Huntsville abortion clinic in June 1984.Madison County Circuit Judge S.A. Father Markleywas pastor of Our Lady of the Shoals Church inTuscumbia, Ala., and Birmingham diocesancoordinator of pro-life activities at the time of theattack. He is currently serving a five-year jailsentence in connection with an earlier attack.

Syracuse paper apologizes forcartoon about Blessed Virgin

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (NC) — A Syracuse daily" newspaper has apologized for publishing an editorial

cartoon which was criticized by Bishop FrankHarrison of Syracuse as a "scurrilous and viciouscomment" on Catholic teaching about the BlessedVirgin. The cartoon, by syndicated cartoonistPatrick Oliphant, appeared in the March 14 editionof The Post-Standard newspaper and dealt with theMarch 10 Vatican document on procreation. Thecartoon portrayed Pope John Paul II holding ascroll which read "no surrogate fertilization" as hetold the Blessed Virgin, "Hey, no way — I grantyou special dispensation, and I'll have to grant it toeveryone." A side comment in the cartoon asked "Isthis what they call a papal bull?"

Pro-lifers in Congress fightfederal funding of abortion

WASHINGTON (NC) — With the backing ofpro-lifers, Reps. Henry J. Hyde, R-I1L, and Sen.Gordon J. Humphrey, R-N.H., March 19 in-troduced White House-endorsed legislation topermanently bar federal funding of abortion anddeny government family planning funds to providersof abortions or abortion referrals. Known in-formally as the "superbill," the legislation also statesthat Congress "finds" that the Supreme Court"erred" in its 1973 Roe vs. Wade abortion ruling.

In a cloakroom area, we found cards bearing ournames by which our coats could be identified. Wemet around a huge U-shaped table. At each placethere was a desk blotter, name card, paper and pen, abottle of drinking water, a microphone and smallspeaker, as well as earphones for simultaneoustranslation. We did not, however, need thetranslation equipment-everyone spoke in English.

We described the dioceses that His Holiness willvisit. We tried to provide some backgroundorientation on the various American groups withwhom His Holiness will meet --e.g., clergy,religious, laity, educators, charity, workers, healthcare personnel, communicators, American Jews,American Protestants, Blacks, Hispanics, NativeAmericans. We also spoke, among other UnitedStates topics, of pastoral care, of homosexuals,women in the Church, relations with theologians andcollaboration of the United States BishopsConference with the Holy See.

Free, cordial exchangeThe interchange was free and cordial and

mutually informative. We touched on perceptions ofthe Holy See in the United States of America, whichare at times quite unfriendly and inaccurate. I acquireda new regard for the prelates who serve in the various

-offices of the Church. Isolated from their homecountries (there were men from Africa, Germany,Belgium and the United States in addition toItalians), they are earnest, courteous, holy mencommitted to the Kingdom of Jesus and loyal to theHoly Father. They were troubled by the perceptionof some Americans that they are prejudiced againstthe Church in the United States. This they deniedvigorously, expressing, rather, their admiration ofthe vitality of the Faith in the United States. It wasevident to me that they at times suffer from unfaircriticism of a vocal, often uninformed and -

manipulated minority in our country. Often theirrole and requirements of office give them noopportunity to respond to critics. I feel that, attimes, this criticism is based on socio-culturaldifferences in procedures.

In the United States we are especially concernedabout due process, but sometimes at the expense oflegalism and of failure to accomplish the objectivesof the procedure. The Holy See, while respecting dueprocess according to Canon Law, seems morecentered on the purpose of the procedure.

In the United States we highly regard freedom ofexpression and action even at the cost, at times, ofother values, such as pornography and the moralpermissiveness of our society. The Holy See seemsto be attempting to balance its respect for freedom •with a sensitivity to protecting Gospel values, soimportant for responsible use of freedom.

Publicity vs. privacyIn the United States we value publicity as a

watchdog of our society even to the point ofaccepting the media's commercialization of scandal,depressing news, divisive controversy and unverifiedallegations against the good names of the innocent.The Holy See is more sensitive to the individual'sright to privacy and a good reputation. It refuses tobe drawn into inappropriate publicity even to defenditself. It seems to work on a more trustingphilosophy and on the theory that differences canbetter be resolved without the glare and emotion ofpublicity, much of which is distorted.

i f The revolutionary sense of freedom of our .W American culture is at times accompanied by aI certain distrust of authority and of anything foreignI to the United States of America. It brings with it a

special emotionalism in support of the "little guy."The members are open to being sensitized to

those United States differences as they are to those ofAfrica, China and other nations.

They are interested in observations as to howthe Holy See might be more pastorally effective inministering to our nation. They are aware that thegreat majority of priests, religious and laity arefaithful members of the Church who need and deserveto be recognized and affirmed, who are done adisservice by those who prod them to cynicism.

On the other hand, we in the United States needto be careful not to assume an arrogance that wouldimply that United States procedures are necessarilythe only and best for the Universal Church. Somealso need to avoid an excessive preoccupation withthe negative whole being blind to the good thingshappening in the Church.

The Holy Father is able to express himself^clearly in English and what he has to say is

obviously the result of deep thought. He remarked thatwe are all enrolled in the school of the Holy Spirit andthat we can assist each other in learning. He alsoseemed at pains to indicate he sees his visit as not onlyto the faithful, as important as that is, but to all peopleof the United States, hoping it will be of spiritualbenefit to them and an occasion for recommitment tohigh ideals in our social, political and economic life.

We closed our meetings with a delightful luncheonwith the Holy Father, shared by the United StatesBishops and the members of the Curia who had beenmeeting with us. We had prosciutto, salad, cannelloni,a turkey entre and cake for dessert, all served by Sisters.His Holiness seemed quite relaxed, though he had had abusy morning of audiences in addition to meeting withus.

We closed the luncheon and our meetings bysinging together. Spurred on by Cardinal Krol, ourHoly Father sang a favorite song from his hometown inPoland. We were told it had special significance

because it was sung of the evening he was electedSupreme Pontiff. Cardinal Law, of Boston, sang abeautiful solo, "Simon Peter, Do You Love Me." Weall joined in a parting "Salve Regina" to Our Lady.

We were invited on one evening to a reception forus by Ambassador Shakespeare, the United StatesAmbassador to the Holy See. The embassy is locatedin the beautiful home that had belonged to the PacelliFamily, the family of Pope Pius XII. The Ambassadorexplained that there had been personal representatives tothe Holy See of our President, on and off, since themiddle of the past century. One of them was our ownMr. David Walters, of Miami.

For years, however, our government resistedestablishing an embassy or authorizing funds for thepurpose. However, recently it has been recognized thatthe Vatican is an important listening post with moreAmbassadors accredited to it than to many nations.There is a staff of nine Americans at the embassy andfour Marine security guards.

We had a fascinating experience in visiting the

Sistine Chapel and observing the work being donethere in cleaning the Michaelangelo frescoes on theceiling. Archbishop Marcinkus, the AmericanGovernor of the Vatican, came up with a way ofmounting a large movable scaffolding platform whichrides of rails mounted near the ceiling and is reachedby a movable elevator.

Michaelangelo surpriseMuch to their surprise, when attaching the rails

to the side walls, the workmen discovered evidencethat Michaelangelo had supported his scaffolding in asimilar way. He did not, as is commonly thought,paint while lying on his back. We were invited toride the elevator to the scaffolding, whe're we were intouching distance from the frescoes. No one believedMichaelangelo's colors were as brilliant as thecleaning has revealed.

The cleaning process is being done with extremecare. In a special laboratory tiny fragments of theplaster are analyzed with infrared rays and a micro-scope that reveals the original color-impregnatedplaster, the glue (varnish) with which it had beencovered and the layer of grime that had accumulatedover the centuries, especially from candles, oil lampsand heaters. Somehow, I am newly aware of how shallowour heritage in the New World is. Somehow, I have anew admiration of the men of past ages who wereable to dream such great dreams in the marvelousartistic and architectural, engineering and faithachievements they have bequeathed to us. Somehow,I feel they had and lived a clearer, more dynamicvision of the greatness, the splendor of what it is tobe a human being, a child of God, a person of Faith.

"I am not an evangelizer of democracy. I am anevangelizer of the Gospel," the pope said. However,"if democracy also means human rights it belongs alsoto the message of the church, not as a priority but asan important content."

Bishop urges CanadianCatholics to welcome refugees

Vatican paper says armsreduction is now possible

VATICAN CITY (NC) — The Vatican newspapersaid an agreement on reducing Soviet and NATOmissile forces in Europe is now possible as long asboth sides show wisdom and patience. Thenewspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, also said chang-ing policies in the Soviet Union have been a factorin the progress shown so far in negotiations. "Whatappeared lost at the Reykjavik meeting now seemssalvageable," the newspaper said in a Marcheditorial. It referred to the Iceland summit meetinglast year between President Ronald Reagan andSoviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev", in which the twofailed to agree on an arms control package that in-cluded medium-range nuclear weapons in Europe.

Bishops worried about Aquino'stough new attitude

MANILA, Philippines (NC) — Some Philippinebishops say they are concerned about the tough linePresident Corazon Aquino took March 22 in callingfor "police and military action" against insurgents.But a number also expressed frustration with com-munist and right-wing rebels for rejecting Mrs.Aquino's peace overtures. President Aquino said in .a speech at a Philippine Military Academy gradua-tion that "one nation, one armed forces, acting withthe energy and direction of a single hand, will smitethe foe on the left and the right, and permanentlyend all threats to freedom before my term aspresident is over." She delivered the speech from agrandstand where four were killed and more than 30wounded March 18 when a bomb blew up atceremony rehearsals. The bomb reportedly wasmeant for her.

Exiled Indians ask popefor help during visit to Chile

MEXICO CITY (NC) — An organizationrepresenting exiled Chilean Indians has written PopeJohn Paul II asking for "a sign of relief and amessage of hope" during his April visit to Chile.According to the letter, signed by Reynaldo I.Marjqueo for the Mapuche Committee Abroad, theMapuche Indians have been the target of humanrights abuses, and many of the Indians have beenforced into exile. The letter ap-peared recently in the Mexico City newspaperUnomasuno. The pope is scheduled to meet withMapuche Indians April 5 in Temuco, Chile.

During an in-flight press conference, the pope alsofavored making the Vatican budget public and defend-ed the U.S. head of the Vatican bank who is being in-vestigated in connection with an Italian banking scan-dal. *

The papal journey includes Uruguay, Chile andArgentina. The pontiff was scheduled to meet thepresident of Chile's military government, Gen.Augusto Pinochet, on April 2.

Catholics wage war againstdrug traffic in Mexico

Vatican to reveal budget dataVATICAN CITY (NC) — The

Vatican has announced it will providedetails of its spending and income tothe world's bishops for the first timeas part of a fund-raising appeal tocover its growing deficit.

At the same time, the Vaticarr pre-dicted the shortfall in its 1987 op-erating budget would increase toabout $63 million. That would beabout $7 million more than theprevious year and the largest shortfallsince the Vatican began publishingbudget figures in 1979.

A.two-page Vatican statement,, is- .sued March 26 after a meeting of a

..cardinals' finance council, said the\puncil had decided to send a letter to

^bishops, requesting a "more ample,and organic participation" by localchurches in Vatican operating costs.;-

With the letter, the statement said,the bishops will receive a "synthesis"of the 1985 operating budget of theHoly See and the Vatican Citygovernment. That was the first yearthe various Vatican departments wereunited in a single budget statement,according to a Vatican financialsource. -

The source said the idea was to givethe bishops enough information tomake informed judgments on pos-sible permanent solutions to theshortfall problem.

The letter includes "several con-crete hypothetical solutions" to thedeficit to be evaluated by the .bishops,the Vatican statement said. Thesesolutions are based on "collegiality"

and a "sense of communion" be-tween local churches and theVatican's central agencies, it said.

The statement did not elaborate onthe proposals containefl in the letter,and the Vatican source said the con-tents of the letter were not expected tobe made public by the Vatican.

The statement revealed that the an-nual Peter's Pence fund, which since1984 has been used to cover much ofthe yearly shortfall, was expected tocover only about half the 1987 short-fall. .

Bishop Camus had characterized the assassination attempt as "an act ofwar" in which "a certain heroism" could be recognized.

The papal nuncio in Chile was called in for a rebuke by Chile's foreign of-fice, and the 13-year-old military regime sent a message to the Vatican urgentenough that Pope John Paul II was called out of a spiritual retreat.

Some church sources speculate that the government was considering drasticaction against Bishop Camus or had asked the Vatican to do so. On March17, however, the Vatican announced that it would not comment on what itconsidered an "internal matter."

Bishop Camus, whose diocese is located in the southern provincial capitalof Linares, was given special police protection after receiving death threats.

John Paul IPs sixth encyclical, on therole of Mary in the church, struck astrong ecumenical tone on a subjectthat has frequently divided Catholicsand Protestants.

While devotion to Mary has some-times been divisive, the pope empha-sized the positive in the document,saying the Blessed Virgin is an inspi-ration to Christian unity. One mainpoint of agreement, he said, is thatMary is recognized by all Christiansas the mother of the Lord.

"Therefore, why should we" not alltogether look to her as our commonmother?" he asked in the encyclical.

The encyclical, "RedemptorisMater" (Mother of the Redeemer),was issued on March 25, the feast ofthe Annunciation. It was written inpreparation for a special Marian yearcalled by the pope, to begin June 7.

The ecumenical debate over Maryhas centered on the traditional Cath-olic belief that she is a "mediator"for mankind. Some Protestantchurches have objected to this under-standing of Mary's place in the workof salvation and rejected the idea ofpraying to Mary.

The new encyclical, like the SecondVatican Council's decree on ecu-menism, stressed that Mary's inter-cession depends on Christ, the uniquemediator. In a central section titled"Maternal Mediation," the encyc-lical also developed the idea thatMary's intercession should be seen aspart of her continuing "maternalcare."

"In effect, Mary's mediation is in-timately linked with hermotherhood," the encyclical states."This is important because it under-lines that Mary's mediation is dif-ferent from that of Christ," saidFather Pierre Duprey, secretary ofthe Secretariat for Promoting Chris-tian Unity.

He added that the encyclical "radi-cally and totally excludes" what hasbeen a basic Protestant fear: thatMary may be seen as a separatesource of salvation.

Devotion to Mary is also empha-sized in the document, but in con-nection with her being a guide for thepilgrim church, and especially a guideto the Eucharist. By stressing Mary's

continuing relationship with the liv-ing church, the encyclical thus givesher role a "new perspective," saidCardinal Joseph Ratzinger, head ofthe Vatican's Congregation for theDoctrine of the Faith.

Cardinal Ratzinger and FatherDuprey, who spoke at a Vatican pressconference March 25, both noted thepope's "positive intention" to bridgeecumenical differences over Mary'srole.

The pope, for example, wrote lessabout Mary's traditional titles, Car-dinal Ratzinger said, and much more'about her connection with thechurch's mission.

Father Duprey said his secretariat,in an unusual move, sent advancecopies of the encyclical to leaders ofProtestant churches as a "gesture ofcordiality."

Protestant churches, he said, wereawaiting the encyclical before reac-ting formally to the pope's declara-tion of the Marian year.

The encyclical's other majorecumenical overture was to separatedEastern Christians, who have a strongtradition of Marian devotion. Thepope, who frequently emphasizesanniversaries, here highlighted two:Christianity's approaching third mil-,lennium in the world, and its firstthousand years in parts of what isnow the Soviet Union, to be marked in1988.

Father Duprey said the pope wastaking advantage of a "historiccoincidence" to underline the com-mon practice of Marian prayera.mong Catholics and OrthodoxChristians, especially those in theSoviet Union. The official said heplanned to meet soon with an Or-thodox delegation from Moscow todiscuss the document.

In recalling the place of icons of theMadonna in the lives of EasternChristians, the pope suggested a new,ecumenical image for Mary: "Couldshe not become the sign of hope forall those who, in fraternal dialogue,.wish to deepen their obedience offaith?"

One of the areas of disagreementbetween Catholics and Protestants hasbeen Mary's role as "mediatrix," aninterceder for mankind. The encyclicaldescribes Mary's mediation as animportant part of her "maternalcare," but said it in no way diminishesthe unique mediation of Christ.

Among Eastern churches, whichhave faced "frequent persecution,even to the point of bloodshed," thedocument said, Mary has been given a"privileged place."

It took special note of the approach-ing millennium of Christianity in whatis now part of the Soviet Union. A fewdecades after the baptism of 988 of St.Vladimir, grand duke of Kiev, theschism between Eastern and WesternChristianity occurred.

"Even though we are still experi-encing the painful effects of the sepa-ration," the document said, "we cansay that in the presence of the motherof Christ we feel that we are truebrothers and sisters."

The pope praised the Easterncustom of placing images of the Virginin places of honor in churches andhomes.

"The icons are still venerated in theUkraine, in Byelorussia and in Russiaunder various titles. They are imageswhich witness to the faith and spirit ofprayer of that people," the encyclicalsaid. The three areas are now Soviet

The document said the church isaware — "and at the present time thisawareness is particularly vivid" —that the truth about salvation cannotbe separated from God's preferencefor the poor and humble.

Mary, as dependent upon God anddirected toward him, is "the mostperfect image of freedom and of theliberation of humanity," the encyclicalsaid, quoting from an instruction bythe Congregation for the Doctrine ofthe Faith.

Mary's role also has "special impor-tance in relation to women and theirstatus," the document said.

It said this was illustrated "by thevery fact that God, in the sublimeevent of the incarnation of his son, en-trusted himself to the ministry, thefree and active ministry of a woman."

"It can thus be said that women, bylooking to Mary ̂ find in her the secretof living their femininity with dignityand of achieving their own true ad-vancement," it said.

The encyclical listed qualities thatthe church sees in women, "in the lightof Mary:... the self-offering totality oflove; the strength that is capable ofbearing the greatest sorrows; limitlessfidelity and tireless devotion to work;the ability to combine penetratingintuition with words of support andencouragement."

The document said these are "theloftiest sentiments of which the humanheart is capable."

The document also emphasized thatalthough Mary has a central role in thechurch, she did not receive the "apos-tolic mission" given to Christ'sdisciples at Pentecost.

Sound of Music'sVon Trapp waspro-life, Charismatic

MORRISVILLE, Vt. (NC) —Maria von Trapp, the one-time con-vent novice whose marriage to a warhero and decision to flee Austria withhim and 10 children to avoid compli-city with Nazi rule inspired the filmand play "The Sound of Music," diedMarch 28 at age 82.

She died in a Morrisyille hospitalthree days after undergoing intestinalsurgery.

. Morrisville is located near Stowe,vt., where the Trapp family settledmore than 40 years ago and whereJohannes von Trapp, the youngest ofthe 10 children Maria and BaronGeorg von Trapp led out of Austria in1938, manages the Trapp FamilyLodge.

The story of the Trapp familybecame one of the movie industry'sgreatest financial successes with therelease of the Rodgers and Hammer-stein musical "The Sound of Music,"starring Julie Andrews, in 1965.

The film won five- AcademyAwards. Earlier, the von Trapp storywas told in a Broadway musical whichOpened in 1959 and ran for three years.

Mrs. von Trapp, a strong proponentof the family and a spokeswoman forthe charismatic movement, spoke of

her faith in God and devotion to theCatholic Church in a number of inter-views during the years she lived in theUnited States.

In a 1977 interview, the baronessadvised Catholics not to get caught upin "too many alleluias" and "Praisethe Lords."

Rather than concentrating on the"externals" of their faith, she said,they should "read the Gospels, findout what they mean to you, and startto shape your own life."

In 1980, declaring that the health ofa society is judged by its attitude to-ward children, she said U.S. lawspermitting abortions would "draw thewrath of God on the nation."

Pope Pius XII awarded her theBenemerenti Medal in 1949 for hergenerosity to the suffering people ofAustria.

During concert intermissions on thefamily's annual singing tours through-out the United States, the baroness ap-pealed for old clothes and food to besent to distribution centers in Salzburgand Vienna. In 1947, nearly 100,000pounds of food and clothing were sentto Austria by the von Trapp family.

Trapp, was a selection of the CatholicBook Club in 1949.. Advocating greater participation of

laity in church services, the baronesssponsored music camps in Vermontwith classes stressing the Gregorianchant and other liturgical pieces.

Mrs! von Trapp was awarded theSiena Medal, the highest award ofTheta Phi Alpha, the national sororityfor Catholic women, in 1962.

In 1964, she welcomed 40 Catholicsand Episcopalians to the Trapp FamilyLodge in Vermont for an interfaithreligious conference.

Maria Augusta Kutschera, thefuture baroness, was born on a trainspeeding from her parents' village to ahospital in Vienna in 1905.

She was an orphan by age 7 and wasraised by a court-appointed guardian,whom she later described as anti-Catholic.

After graduating from a teachers'college in Vienna, she became a candi-date for the novitiate at a Benedictineconvent in Salzberg.

The convent's abbess sent her to begoverness at the villa of Baron vonTrapp.

TV preacher dispute reflects badly-priestWASHINGTON (NC) — • The dispute among fundamentalist television

preachers "reflects badly on religion," said Holy Cross Father Theodore Hes-burgh.

"We always get in trouble when we get too much involved with money," saidFather Hesburgh, president of the University of faotre Dame;

Father Hesburgh made his comments March 29 on the ABC-TV program,"This Week With David Brinkley."

The fundamentalist preachers' dispute began when Rev. Jim Bakker resignedMarch 19 from the multimillion dollar PTL Ministry, saying he had been black-mailed over a sexual encounter several years earlier with a church secretary. Hesaid later that the real reason for the resignation was that he had learned of aplot for a hostile takeover of his ministry.

The initials of the ministry, carried by cable television to an estimated 13.5million homes, stand for "Praise the Lord" or "People That Love."

Other Catholic leaders also voiced concern about the effects of the disputeand of the glitzy, well-financed fundamentalist-type TV preaching shows.

Bishop Kenneth Untener of Saginaw, Mich., said in an interview that he was' 'not enthusiastic" about TV evangelism because ethe TV evangelists seem tofocus attention on themselves" rather than on God;

"The ministries frequently become personality cults rather than leading peo-ple directly to the Lord," Bishop Untener said. "Perhaps some of the competi-tion among them is an indication of that."

He also said he would discourage Catholics from sending money to the evan-gelists because "the money sent intends to build up their own ministries and

which, he said, "tend to reach out to the poor."Henry .Herx, coordinator of information and education services at the U.S.

Catholic Conference Department of Communication, said that many TV funda-mentalist preachers "use tactics which are exploitive of the viewers."

Many are "organized like a political campaign" and are "constantly bar-raging"viewers for money throughthe mail, Herx said:

"They're high gloss, very emotional" and show that the producers "under-stand the art of persuasion and how to use the media for propaganda," Herxsaid. "It's not an intellectual but an emotional approach," preying on the lonelyand troubled, he said.

Father John Catoir, director of The Christophers, predicted his media effortswill not suffer because of the dispute. The Christophers, one of the church'soldest TV efforts, runs its low-key ministry from New York and "doesn't evenask for money on television," he said. -

But the fundamentalists have been hurt, he said, and their dispute is uncover-ing "an incredible competition among them for dollar support."

Paulist Father Ellwood Kieser, president of Paulist Productions, in PacificPalisades, Calif., also said he does not think his work will be affected. The hostof "Insight," a television series appearing on more than 100 stations, FatherKieser said that Catholic media efforts are quite different from those of funda-mentalist preachers. His programs are dramas on Christian principles.

Church: 'Baby M1 ruling OKs 'baby-selling'By NC News Service

Catholic officials, reacting to ajudge's ruling in the notorious "BabyM" case, have compared surrogatemotherhood to "baby-selling" andurged that laws be passed to ban theprocedure.

"The 13th Amendment didn'twork. It is still possible to buy and sella human being," said Richard Doer-flinger, assistant director of the U.S.bishops' Office for Fro-Life Ac-tivities. The 13th Amendment outlawsslavery.

William F. Bolan Jr., executivedirector of the New Jersey CatholicConference, also said the decision"sanctions baby-selling" and said hehopes the state Legislature "will actquickly to affirm public policy"against baby-selling.

A New Jersey judge ruled March 31that the "Baby M" surrogate mothercontract is valid, awarding custody ofthe 1-year-old girl to her biologicalfather, William Stern, and his wife,Elizabeth.

Judge Harvey R. Sorkow ofSuperior Court in Hackensackj N.J.,denied visitation rights to biologicalmother Mary Beth Whitehead, whohad argued that the contract sheentered into with Sterns was invalid.

The three-month-long non-jury trialhas highlighted the complications ofthe surrogacy issue. The Vatican hascondemned surrogate motherhoodand Catholic officfals in the UnitedStates have termed it a "moral

disaster."In the "Baby M" case Mrs. White-

head was artificially inseminated withStern's sperm, but she refused to giveup the baby she had agreed to bear for$10,000. *

The judge ruled that Mrs. White-head knew what she was getting intowhen she agreed to bear the child. Hesaid the New Jersey law against sellingbabies was not violated because Sternwas the father of the baby.

The judge said Stern and his wifewpuld be the most fit parents andwould better be able to explain herunusual beginnings.

In a Feb. 22 document on moderntechniques of procreation, the VaticanCongregation for the Doctrine of theFaith said surrogate motherhood ismorally illict — "an objective failureto meet the obligations of maternallove, of conjugal fidelity and ofresponsible motherhood."

During the "Baby M" trial thebishops' conference of New Jerseycalled surrogate motherhood "a legaloutrage and moral disaster."

The New York State Catholic Con-ference also called surrogate mother-hood a "moral disaster" and a"psychological minefield."

In a. Feb. 3 statement J. AlanDavitt, executive director of the NewYork State Catholic Conference, saidthe practice of surrogate motherhood"seriously damages the integrity ofmarriage — both for the father andhis wife, who will be unequallyrelated to the child, and for the motherand her husband, who stands by as hiswife's womb is rented out to anotherperson." -

Davitt's statement was released theday a bill was introduced in the NewYork Legislature that would honorsurrogate motherhood contracts aslegal and irrevocable.

Pope to meet black bishops while in U.S.WASHINGTON (NC) — Pope

John Paul II has added a meeting withblack bishops and black Catholics tothe New Orleans stop of his Sept.10-19 visit to the United States.

The meeting will be the first eventon the pope's Sept. 12 schedule andwill be held at the chapel at the NotreDame Seminary.

During his Sept. 11-13 stop in NewOrleans the pope also will meet withelementary, secondary and highereducation leaders and will attend ayouth rally.

The message was clear: Divorcedand separated Catholics, and all thosewho have been away from the church

v because of a marriage situation, arewelcome home.

The need for reconciliation wascommunicated at this year's Separatedand Divorced conference, held at Nati-vity Church in Hollywood on March28. The day-long conference featured atalk on annulments, a personal witnessby a St. Andrew couple (see story), andworkshops on such topics as the healingprocess after divorce and the role of theremarried in the Church. A similar confe-rence was held in Spanish on March 21.

"We invite you simply to comehome. You are missed," Father AndrewAnderson, Judicial Vicar of the Arch-diocesan Tribunal, said in an openingspeech.

Father Anderson expressed the hopethat those who attended could set asideany past bitterness involving the Catho-lic Church. It was not a day for placingblame, he said.

"If you're waiting for a perfectChurch to come back to you're going togrow old. And if we're waiting forperfect people to fill the pews, we'regoing to be out of a job first of all," he

do today is to have each of us, eitherhere as ministry or being ministered to,stop thinking that it's the person next tome, the previous generation, the rulesand regulations of an institutionalChurch, the Pope in Rome, the bishopin Miami, or the pastor in the parish,that is lacking in love."

The effort to love must be made byourselves, he said, reflecting throughour actions the love of Christ

Sister Virginia McCall, director ofthe Ministry to the Separated andDivorced at the Family EnrichmentCenter, apologized in a speech if, be-cause of a divorce or other marriage cir-cumstance, those present felt like theChurch was "sweeping you under a

felt like I had a brand across my foreheadand one across my back that saiddivorced, and every place I went I feltlike people were looking at me andthinking that I'm divorced.'"

This feeling can become even morepronounced in a Church setting wherepeople are surrounded by married cou-ples or perhaps temporarily denied thesacraments.

During a painfuldivorce, this feeling ofalienation can quickly turn toanger. "Maybe in your angeryou need to be angry at Godand angry at the Church andso you distance them," shesaid.

This need not be thecase. There are 13 supportgroups in English and sevensupport groups in Spanishfor the separated and divorced of theArchdiocese, Sister McCall told theaudience. In addition, there are specialweekends sponsored by the Marriage

Steve and Marilyn Johnson, newly married after adivorce, were impatient to get their previous marriagesannulled and return to the sacraments.

The couple, parishioners of St. Andrew CatholicChurch in Coral Springs, shared their personal annulmentexperience at the Miami Archdiocesan Separated andDivorced Conference held at Nativity parish March 28.

Steve, originally a Lutheran, decided when he marriedMarilyn in 1982 to convert to Catholicism despite what hesaw at first as a long and difficult conversion process.Between talking to a parish priest about the conversion andabout plans to adopt a child, Steve says, "we weren'tlistening to the priest as he laid out the [annulment]procedure."

When they were informed that a lay person wouldhandle the- process because of the priest's busy schedule,Steve was surprised., _^ ,. \ .„•

"My first reaction," he said at the conference, "waswhat! an unknown lay person to whom I'm supposed to tellall the details of my previous marriage? Will he have thesame confidentiality that a priest has? Can I trust him toknow what he's doing? Much, to my surprise, he was verycompassionate and knowledgeable about the process."

"It was emotionally very difficult for me," saidMarilyn, "I had to recount a painful past, a part of my lifethat I was trying desperately to put behind."

Frustrations at one point turned to anger at the Churchwhen they were informed during the annulment process thatthey couldn't receive the sacraments at an Easter SundayMass.

At a Church retreat later, however, they realized thatthey forgot one thing in their preoccupation with getting aquick annulment-God.

As they reflected further, contemplating mistakes theymade in their earlier marriages, they discovered that the easy

"Through the annulment process Iwas able to realize how important amarriage commitment is, and somethingthat important is not to be takenlightly," he said.

Marilyn felt the experience broughtthem closer. "We had discovered a unityand oneness in our marriage that wasn'tthere before," she said.

"We came to understand,"= concluded Steve, "that the annulmentnecessarily an instantaneous solution or aprocess is not

miraculous cure but a first step toward a renewal in Christ

Synod exec is 'evangelizer of the year'

Marsha Whelan, director of Evangelization and SynodSecretary for the Archdiocese of Miami, has been giventhe 1987 Paulist Fathers' National Award for LayEvangelization.

Upon being notified of her selection, Whelan said,"The award is affirming for me and for all lay peopleworking at parish and diocesan levels to bring the goodnews to people's lives. The everyday plodding is worthit." She also praised Archbishop Edward McCarthy andPaulist Father Alvin Illig for their leadership in the workof evangelization.

Whelan has been involved in the Archdiocese ofMiami's Evangelization program since its inception in1980, first as associate director and, since 1983, asdirector. She was a member of the steering committee

responsible for forming and organizing the National Council for CatholicEvangelization, and last year was elected president of the group.

Before coming to work for the Archdiocese, Whelan worked as an administratorand teacher in both private and public schools in Florida. She is past president of theDade County Association for Retarded Citizens; a member of the board of trustees ofCarrollton School of the Sacred Heart in Coeonut Grove; and on the advisory boardfor St Luke Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Center in Miami. She holds a Master'sdegree in religious education from the Catholic University of America and anotherMaster's in public administration.

Whelan will receive her award June 6 in Washington from Father JosephGallagher, president of the Paulist Fathers. The presentation will be made during"Pentecost '87," a day-long evangelization celebration which will use satellitetechnology to link 60,000 people scattered across 200 different sites in the UnitedStates.

Two priests, who served inmissionary fields prior to coming toSouth Florida to minister in localparishes, died within a few days of eachother last week.

Father Samuel J. Delaney, formerpastor of St. Francis Xavier parish, diedon March. 21, after a long bout withcancer. Father Leornard J. Boucher,OML, associate pastor at Holy FamilyChurch, died suddenly of a heart attackon March 24.

A Memorial Mass will beconcelebrated on Sunday, April 5, atnoon in St. Thomas the ApostleChurch, where Father Delaney, 83, hadbeen serving as associate pastor until hebecame ill two years ago.

Archbishop Edward A. McCarthywill be the principal celebrant of the

Mass for the New Jersey-bom priestwho was in a nursisg home in NorthSwainton, NJ. at the time of his death.

The Archbishop was also theprincipal celebrant of a Mass ofChristian Burial last Friday in HolyFamily Church for Father Boucher, whowas 75.

city from 1972 to 1979, where heministered to parishioners of St. FrancisXavier Church, Father Delaney came to.Miami in 1966 and had served inparishes of South Florida's west coast aswell as in Dade County.

He returned to the U.S. in 1964 andwas chaplain and professor of medicalethics at St. Joseph Hospital, Nashua.From 1973 to 1975 he was chaplain atthe Connecticut Valley Hospital. Fortwo years he served in the Diocese ofPortland as pastor of St. Leo Church.

Prior to coming to Miami in 1979he was director of the Oblate of MaryImmaculate Missions headquartered inLowell, Mass.

It is all too much a part of apriest's day-to-day experience in SouthFlorida. He hears a confession fromsomeone who is addicted to alcohol ordrugs or a desperate wife contacts himabout a husband who is an alcoholic butwon't admit it. What can the priest do?

Father Sean O'Sullivan, director ofSubstance Abuse for the Archdiocese ofMiami's Catholic Community Services(CCS), has a suggestion he thinkswould help. Priests who are approachedwith substance abuse problems couldcall on the advice of a resource personvilhin their own parish, someone whoj knowledgeable about drug/alcohol

programs available in the area.Local pastors considered that idea

along with other suggestions for combat-ting drug and alcohol abuse at the parishlevel during a luncheon/meeting recentlywith Father O'Sullivan and EdBobinchock, the director of D.A.R.E.,the Miami Archdiocese's drug prevenrtion and education program. The meet-ing was held at St. Luke's Center, theArchdiocese's substance abuse facility.

There was a general agreement thatif a pastor should decide to refer peopleto a resource person these personsshould ideally be former alcoholics ordrug addicts themselves, with experienceand first-hand knowledge of such pro-grams as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narco-tics Anonymous, and Families Anony-mous.

D.A.R.E. has offered to train thesepersons to ensure that they are know-ledgeable about all area drug and alcoholfacilities and support groups.

At last week's meeting it was alsoagreed that churches should make aneffort to make their facilities available

Father O'Sullivan, who ischairman of the Religious LeadershipCommittee of the Governor's Commis-sion on Drug and Alcohol Concerns,believes that churches are an invaluableand to some extent untapped resource inthe battle against substance abuse.

The commission, made up of 17religious leaders representing the majorfaiths and denominations, issued adocument last fall recommending waysthat a church or synagogue could inte-

grate a concern about substanceabuse into its regular activities.

These suggestions included every-thing from creating support groups forfamilies of recovering persons to integra-ting alcohol and drug education intoalready established parish groups andministries.

Archbishop Edward McCarthy andAuxiliary Bishop Agustin Roman willbring up some of these suggestions at ascheduled Florida Bishops Conferencethis month.

"It is a chance for-us in theCatholic Church to give leadershipthroughout Florida," says Father O' Sul-livan. "Right now there is a vacuum, a

cutback in all forms of funding, andwith a Republican government they aregoing to be looking to the voluntarysector to implement drug preventionprograms."

The substance abuse directorbelieves that whether or not they havespecific drug and alcohol programs, reli-gious institutions offer the best knownanecdote for addiction -faith.

"People return to sobriety andsanity when they get in touch with ahigher power," he says. "It is now asocial-science fact that attendance atreligious services acts as an insulationagainst involvement in drugs andalcohol:"

Although he was bom in the

United States, Father Andriuska neverforgot his Lithuanian roots. He studiedtheology and was ordained in Lithuania,and there he ministered for two yearsuntil the invading Nazi armies forcedhim to leave.

Ona Vaicekonis, a member ofMiami's Lithuanian Club who attendedthe anniversary Mass here, explainedthat most Lithuanian-Americans wereexiled from their homeland after theSecond World War, as a result of the

Russian occupation.Most of them settled in the

Chicago area, although Lithuanians canbe found living "in almost every largecity" of the U.S.

The Lithuanians who reside inSouth Florida are mostly retirees fromthe North, she said, and Miami hasrelatively few of them. Most make their

coasts or "Floridliving in the St. Petersburg area.

Vaicekonis said both her familyand her husband's family have remainedin Lithuania, and communication withthem is difficult. Personal letters arescreened and Christmas and Easter cardswith obvious religious symbols aresimply intercepted by the government

"You cannot write about thepolitics, or anything else" except "how'syour health," she added. The economicsituation frequently borders on hardship.

"If you are from Cuba then youknow [how it is in Lithuania],"Vaicekonis said. "Ir/s exactly the samething, except we are worse!because weare directly under Russia."

Pope John Paul II will mark theanniversary of Lithuania's conversion toChristianity on June 28 in Rome, whenhe will beatify the late LithuanianArchbishop George Matulaitis. St. Vincent'scelebrates 25th

With a concelebrated Mass, a home-style bar-b-cue, pink-and-white cake andplenty of music and dancing, the "poorbut happy" parish of St. Vincent dePaul in northwest Miami celebrated its25th anniversary this past Sunday.

While remembering the strugglesof the past, parishioners also lookedforward to making a long-deferred dreamcome true: the building of a parish hall.

More than 600 members of St.Vincent's multi-national communityjammed the church at 2000 NW 103 St.for the anniversary liturgy, which wasconcelebrated by Archbishop EdwardMcCarthy; Auxiliary Bishop AgustinRoman; Vincentian provincial FatherGerard Mahoney; pastor, Father EgbertBrowne, CM; his two associates; andmore than a dozen other priests,including former pastors and "neigh-bors" from nearby churches.

The size of the crowd significantlystrained the air-conditioning and elevatedthe temperature inside the multi-purposechurch building, which for the past 20years has served as parish hall and CCDclassroom as well.

Beautiful on the outside, its insidesare rather bare, with a humble collection.of folding chairs acting as pews. Thebrown-wood altar, however, is quitestriking and dignified, as are theStations of the Cross: large, soft-tonedmosaics hand-made by now-deceasedparishioners. "T-

In a sense, that quiet dignity is asymbol of the whole parish, now 700families strong. Formed out of a nurseryand dairy farm in 1962, arid always xunby members of the Vincentian order, St.Vincent's history is one of financialproblems continually overcome by thecommunity's spiritual riches.

"We are very poor but we are veryhappy," said Father Browne, a native ofCosta Rica who took over as pastor 18months ago. His first impression of St.Vincent was one of "a happy parish, afamily. Everybody tried to pitch in towork together."

Nevertheless, many of those old-timers, regardless of where they livenow, made it a point to attend theanniversary liturgy. Some had not beenback to St. Vincent in as many as 10 or15 years. Among them was FatherJames Gleason, CM, the parish's secondpastor (from '62 to '69 and again from73 to 74), who came all the way fromPhildelphia to deliver the homily at theMass.

"The history of this parish is thehistory of the people," Father Gleasonsaid. "The spirit of love and genero-sity-became their notorious quality."

He recalled how, in the very earlydays, Sunday Masses were celebratesthe ^ ^ ^ r H

Father Gleason also rememberedhow, at "Saturday night bonfires,"volunteers cleared out a number of olddilapidated greenhouses and the massiveunderbrush which nearly engulfed theparish property. St. Vincent's firstparishioners had just finished paying offbuilding pledges for their former parish,

he noted, but they continued to makesacrifices in order to build St. Vincent'schurch.

Father Gleason said he stopped byand found among its workers some ofthe same dedicated people who used tohelp him many years ago. That's whythe 25th anniversary festivities are "acelebration of present reality rather thanpast events," he said.

Hyland, the parish councilpresident, phrased the same thought inmore personal terms. "I feel at homehere," she said. "No matter where I go Ican't wait to get back."

Fighting hunger in city hallA religion lesson turned into a lesson in politics recently for

sixth-graders from St. Brendan School in west Dade. Spurred bythe "religion-should-be-lived" message of their teacher, AngieFernandez, the children had raised about $1,000 {Voice, Feb. 20)to fund "community gardens", a program which will enable thehungry in our community to feed themselves.

The gardens are the brainchild of a group called the HungerProject, which seeks to end hunger worldwide. Group officialswanted the Miami City Commission to grant them $30,000 to fundmore gardens, and they asked some of the St. Brendan studentsto come along and share their enthusiasm for the project.

The kids wasted no time making their point before amusedcommissioners and Miami Mayor Xavier Suarez. "We're solvingyour problems," sixth-grader Alex Gomez-Pina flatly stated.Although the city made no final decision on the matter, thecommissioners all seemed to lean toward granting the funds to theHunger Project. "It looks pretty good to me," said DianeSilverman, executive president of End World Hunger, Inc.

Young people consider vocationsAt first-ever Archdiocesanvocational retreat

For the first Archdiocesan vocational retreat,Father Federico Capdep6n expected about 20young people. A total of 50 showed up, eventhough the program lasts two days, not just a fewhours.

Judging by such success, the experience willhave to be repeated; especially in light of theconclusion reached by many of the participantsthat such retreats are "of great help in making theright decision" about a "faith vocation."

"I came here to make sure of what I want andwhat God wants from me," said Dennis Santanawhile strolling on the grounds of the ArchdiocesanYouth Center near Biscayne Bay.

Santana, a Nicaraguan from St. Dominicparish in west Dade, said he feels a great desire to_communicate, through his ownjjfo f G o d / L ^ .

Battistini went to the retreat "to firm up whatGod wants for me." So he asked a riumberof ques-tions of a vocational panel composed of represent-atives of different lifestyles: priests, permanentdeacons, brothers and sisters, ecclesial layministers and committed laity.

Father Francisco Santana, speakingfor the diocesan priesthood, told theyoung people, "If I could choose again,I'd do the same." He advised them:"Think about it, but not too much,because you'll never make a decision."

"Now I have seen that there aredifferent ways of making a commitmentto God," said Herold Mimy. "I neverthought I could live a celibate vocationwithout entering a Religious order."

For the young Haitian, who hasonly been in Miami five months,retreats like this one "are very useful."He said he has been trying to discern hisvocation for four years. "Now I havemore freedom to choose because I haveseen more possibilities."

According to Father Capdepon,associate director of the ArchdiocesanVocations Office, that was one of thegoals of the retreat.

"We want to expand their voca-tional horizons," he said, explainingthat the project was a team effort by theVocations and Youth Ministry offices,part of a "joint venture we hope to

extend."The energetic priest is convinced

that today's young people are fertileterritory where "we have to plant theseed of a vocation."

He also hopes that, through theseretreats, they'll see that there are otherswho share their same concerns and whoare also searching, "so they know thatthey are not alone."

That was precisely the experienceof Inaki Rezola, a retreat participant. "Ireached out to others who were lookingfor the same thing. And they are riotold people," he noted. *

"I recommend this experience toeverybody—because it enables you tosee 'vocation' as a very broad thing,with many possibilities."

During the retreat, in addition to

listening to speakers describe their ownparticular vocations, the young peopleprayed, shared in small groups, cele-brated the Eucharist together, and hadtime left over for relaxing and singing.

At the end of the retreat, they weregiven an opportunity to join a voca-tional group where they can receivemore guidance and orientation until theymake their decisions.

Church ready to help illegal immigrants(continued from page 1)three-fold: educate the immigrants onhow to take advantage of the new law;educate employers as to the sanctionprovisions contained in it; and educatevolunteers so that they will be able tofill out the INS paperwork.

One piece of advice Stockton isspreading among immigrants she meetsis this: "They should get advice from avolunteer agency; avoid going to INS"directly; and don't "pay any money to alawyer because it's not necessary...Moreprograms are being set up that are go-ing to help people [free of charge] to fillout the papers and determine theirsituation."

Msgr. Bryan Walsh, director of theMinistry of Christian Service in theArchdiocese and an expert on immi-gration policy, also suggests that peoplestart collecting "all the evidence theycan get" to prove that they have arrivedbefore Jan. 1, 1982 and have lived herecontinuously since then: "proofs ofwhere they were living, like rent re-ceipts, pay check stubs, report cards oftheir children, traffic fines, envelopes ad-dressed to them...It's a cumulative typeof evidence, so the more they can getthe better off they are."

He stressed, however, that rightnow, immigrants have "no place to go"for legalization (unless they are Haitiansor Cubans covered under a specialprovision of the new law, see below).

That's because INS has yei topublish the application forms or signcontracts with the private agencies,including the U.S. Catholic Conference,which are expected to carry out a largeportion of the paperwork. Until theUSCC reaches an agreement with INS,"we're being extremely cautious," Msgr.Walsh said.

He added, however, that "we willbe encouraging people.to apply," and"we want to be available to people whoare afraid of going to INS or need helpin filling out the forms."

What the new law does is put Hai-tians on a par with the Cubans, ena-bling them to obtain permanent residen-cy retroactive to 1982, which qualifiesthem for immediate citizenship. Haitians already are applying whileeveryone else must wait until May 5.

This special provision, however,does not apply to Haitians and Cubanswho have no record with INS. If theyentered the country illegally before 1982and were not caught, Father Wenskisaid, they will be treated like aliens ofany other nationality: subject to "tough-er" requirements to prove that they havelived here, and entitled only to atemporary, not a permanent, residency.After that, it will be almost seven yearsbefore they are eligible for citizenship.

The new law has other drawbacks."It's going to create a tremendous

problem with the Nicaraguans who can'tgo back, who are here in limbo, and yetcan't work," said Msgr. Walsh. He esti-mated that only one-third of theNicaraguans in South Florida will beable to legalize their status, since manyarrived after the January '82 cut-off date.

In the meantime, the threat of finesand jail terms for employers whoknowingly hire illegal aliens is creating

Stockton emphasizes that thesanctions won't go into effect until Mayof this year, and for one year thereafter"only citations will be issued." Eventhen, the penalties will, apply "only to

newly-hired workers—Employers mayretain undocumented employees *'were hired before the bill was sigru-uinto law" in November, 1986.

In practical terms this means that ifINS raids the workplace, "they candeport the individual but the employer isnot subject to penalties," Stocktonadded.

Here's a quick look at legalization rulesHere are the provisions of the 1986 Immigration Law,

which applies only to immigrants who arrived or whose legalvisas expired before Jan. 1,1982:

QHaitians and Cubans who have a record with theImmigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and have livedhere continuously since their arrival are eligible for permanentresidency retroactive to January, 1982, provided they applywithin the next two years. Applications already are available.

QFarmworkers who show that they have worked atleast 90 days in agriculture between May 1,1985 and May 1,1986 will receive temporary resident status, which will beupgraded to permanent resident status after two years; thosewho show that they have worked in agriculture during thepast three years will be upgraded to permanent residents oneyear after the law takes effect

QA11 other immigrants have one year to apply forlegalization, between May of 1987 and May of 1988. Theymust prove that they have lived here continuously since theirarrival; if they have left the country at any time, individualabsences must be no longer than 45 days or a total of 180days for all absences combined; and they must show a"continuous physical presence" in this country from Nov. 6,1986, when thelaw was signed, until the day they apply for

Lent: Are wereally sorry?

For past and current hatredsamopg Christians, Jews and Muslims

N It is approximately 1,957 years since Jesus died on a cross on the hill of_ Jvary just outside the walls of Jerusalem. Four years ago, I spent many hours inmeditation on the highest roof of the Ecce Homo Convent, close to the firststation on the Via Dolorosa.

The convent is in the Arab quarter of the Old City, so a person must conquerone's inner reaction to the loud, five-times-a-day calls from at least seven minaretsin hearing distance: "There is no God but Allah..." Getting beyond the usualirritation at being so rudely awakened, especially in the days of Ramadan, when Ihappened to be there in July '83,1 learned that I could pray with whatever numbersof Muslims were lifting their hearts and minds to God at those times.

In my meditation, looking over the tops of domes and roofs, T learned toidentify with certainty the Shrine of the Holy Sepulchre which is built over thehill of Cavalry; also the unique cone-shaped dome of the Basilica of the Dormition

Very close over the roof tops isthe Peter Gallicantu Church, wherePeter heard the cock crow and knew hehad denied his Master. Although not inactual visual contact, one is deeplyaware that over the hill and across theKidron Valley is Gethsemane.

Straight ahead from the conventroof is the Temple Esplanade with theDome of the Rock in all itsarchitectural splendor. Hidden in itsarchitectural underpinnings are theremains of the Temple destroyed by theRomans in the year 70. The onlyreminder of Herod's temple structure isthe Western Wall, sacred to Jewishpeople and now, since the '67 War,available to them: There, thousands goconstantly to pray for peace, and somejust to lean their heads against theancient stone.

An awesome experience from theroof of Ecce Homo is the approach ofthe Sabbath. By sundown on Friday, allsounds of traffic cease and from theJewish quarter, where homes have beenrebuilt after the bombardments of warwith Jordan, the sounds of chanting andsinging begin. The Jewish homesbecome beacons bright with the light ofmany Sabbath candles.

It was a soothing sound and sightto my Christian eyes and ears, coming

• across the Jerusalem sky while Ipondered: what has been going onamong us, all of us who claim loyaltyto the one true God through the

Patriarch Abraham and the ancient prophets, whose messages reverberated in thewords and actions of Jesus. What did He die to teach us that we are so slow tolearn?

There is no denying the pages of history that record the "zealous" actions ofthe Crusaders\who. in the 13th century flooded the streets of this, same Jerusalemwith the blood of Muslims and Jews. Dare we excuseour Christiarfcorisciencebecause some Muslims in the 6th century convinced their consciences of thejustice of the Jihad, or holy war, and massacred Byzantine Christians in the sameplace?

Nor can we any longer refuse to recognize the horrors inflicted on Jews andMuslims by the "Christian" monarchy of Spain: prosecutions that persisted intoother countries and paved the way for Hitler's "final solution".

In this holy season of Lent, with Good Friday not far ahead on the calendar,could we be honest enough in our repentance to regret, publicly, the sins of ourancestors and our own personal blindness, so slow as we are to admit the core ofthe problems that exist between Christians and Jews and Muslims here in Miami.

While we face the ugliness of anti-semitism, honesty requires that we admitthe racism that has not disappeared from our cities. The evils brought upon theblack people kidnapped from their homes in Africa by white "Christians" whosubjected them to sub-human conditions in overcrowded slave ships that parallelthe undescribable cattle-cars of Hitler.

If one shred of religious or cultural superiority exists in us, are we sincerelyfacing the meaning of the sufferings and death of Jesus at the hands of Romancruelty?

One way of proving our sincerity, before the Alleluias of April 19th aredrowned out by the day-to-day bombardment of our senses, is to be present atMiami's first interfaith Yom Hashoah Service, which will be held at St. Mary'sCathedral on April 26 at 3 p.m.

Let us pray together, to the God who is creator and Lord of all, to clear thehuman family of its blindness to each other's miseries and to strengthen us againstgovernments that enslave the less fortunate and helpless.

Here are 9 tips for coping with family stressWhen author Dolores Curran asked couples to

rate the top ten stresses in their life together, she un-covered a stress she hadn't anticipated. One couplegot into a heated discussion because they couldn'tagree on what should be included on their list.

"That was the first indication I had that couplessimply do not perceive the same causes of stresswithin the same family - a stress in and of itself,"writes Curran in the April issue of US. Catholic.

Despite claims that modern couples shareresponsibility, true responsibility is where the stresssurfaces. "Even though husbands and wives mayrecognize the need to share responsibilities, they tendto assign the responsibility for a given familypressure to one another according to whether or notthey perceive it as the other's role."

In the case of the couple who couldn't agree ontlieir top ten family strains, the wife listed thechildren's behavior as a major stress. While the

husband admitted the children often got on his nerves,he viewed their behavior as his wife's responsibility,and so he didn't put it on his list.

"Wives often didn't name money as a source oftension -even though itoften frazzled them- becausethey assigned the responsibility for monetary problemsto their husbands," says Curran. "When couples gettangled up in role expectations, it seems, their abilityto deal effectively with stress diminishes."

Curran, author of "Stress and the HealthyFamily," listed nine similarities shared by families *who deal well with stress. Such families:

• Focus on strengths rather than weaknesses andproblems.

• Go to the root of the stress rather than thesymptoms.

• View stress as temporary rather than permanent.• Turn to solutions rather than blame. Says

Curran, "If I had one gift to give families it would be

the art of resolving conflict effectively."• Value time and activities together.• Focus on the controllable sources of stress

and accept those sources that are uncontrollable.• Develop new rules together.• Feel stronger after conquering a pressure.

They realize their strengths were tested, that theycame through.

Curran found evidence that healthy familiesaren't afraid to ask God's help. One couple she metreported, "First we say, "Let's pray about it.' Thenwe say, "Let's talk about it.' Then we say^ "Let's dosomething about it.'"

A key to handling family stress well isaccepting it as a normal part of life. Curran quotesan 82-year-old respondent: "Lordy, what is all thistalk of stress these days? Stress is life, that's all.It's God's way of showing us, we're alive and

But what about the broader and deeper implications ofthis issue for the rest of society?

Voice EditorialThe Vatican, in its instruction on bioethics last week

declared surrogate mothering to be morally illicit. Yet onething that has become increasingly clear in the wake of the'Baby M1 case is the fact that, in spite of all the problemsassociated with it, there appears to be no greatgroundswell to outlaw surrogate reproduction. Rather, itappears that the various states will study the practice andpass laws not to ban but to regulate it.

Why? American lawmakers and the courts simply areunwilling to enact and uphold laws prohibiting anyone fromdoing anything he pleases, short of making someone elsebleed. If some state legislature does try to ban the practicesomeone will probably go to court and demand herconstitutional right to be insiminated and be paid for theuse of her body in bearing a child for someone else.Already/women are besieging the Whitehead's lawyer,eager to make a quick $10,000. And why not? The highestcourt has already said one can become pregnant underpractically any circumstances and then choose to abort orgive birth and then choose to keep or adopt out the baby.

The key word and crowning concept is "choice." If youdon't like surrogate mothering, then don't do it. If I like it,then step aside. It is a convenient route for government ina free society. Lawmakers needn't play Solomon, let aloneGod. They needn't consider abstract notions such asdignity, marital unity, sexual integrity. Simply let theindividual make his own choice and live with it, and let theChurches instruct their own people to live with it, and let thegovernment build bridges and bombs.

This is an age of moral confusion and governments-Western ones, as opposed to, say, Middle Eastern ones-want to deal in tangible results, not moral principles. That isunderstandable, but the problem is that much of what isgoing on today, especially things associated with the newtechnology, will have consequences that reach deep intoour souls and spread like ripples throughout society. Theconsequences simply cannot yet be known.

Twenty years from now, will we have a generation ofhappy Baby M's or a group of young adults with identityproblems? And in a more subtle way, will the wholeacceptance of third party reproduction make the institutionof marriage even more obsolete than it is already becoming,with people having children out of wedlock by the tens of

thousands in the innercities, with talkshow idols havingbabies by boyfriend, and eventually with babies beingconceived and 'grown' in mechanical wombs or perhapseven through cloning?

The unavoidable extensions of even the near-termbiotechnical possibilities are more chilling than the Baby Mcase will ever be. That is why we point out that theindividual can not expect the government to set our valuesfor us. The government will only regulate, and let us hopeit is tough and careful.

But for those who believe in the deepest meanings oflife and ultimate destinies, we must set our values on ahigher plane than labpratory success rates and seekanswers that value "imperfect" babies, couples willing tosacrifice personal wants, and which value measuresintended to deal with the real rather than mechanical causesof teenage reproduction.

While Catholics can not and should not force our viewson the rest of society, we should, as the Vatican urged,bring our values to bear in the lawmaking processconcerning human reproduction.

After all, the future belongs to everyone.

AIDS reference'uncalled for1

"Editor:I happen to be a devout, daily Mass

and rosary Catholic. I am celibate, goto confession once a month and have apriest as a spiritual director. I am tryingto live a dedicated single life. I "alsohappen to be homosexual (remember, Isaid I'm celibate). So it is with this inmind that I am writing to you to showmy displeasure at your caption for thephoto in your 3/22/87 issue.

It was totally uncalled for to addthe irrelevant information about aids tothis caption about the group Dignity(which I am against, by the way). Whatwas the point? That Dignity causesaids? To remind people thathomosexuals are dying from it? More

likely, it was a smug attack: "See, thisis what happens when you disobey thechurch." It is unlikely that a picture ofdetained Haitians would contain areminder that they were once, also, ahigh risk group for aids.

If the best justification you, as aCatholic paper can give for living acelibate commitment if you arehomosexual is fear of disease, I thinkyou had better hang up your typewriterribbon. I could give you reasons likeacceptance and humble loyalty to theApostolic faith, as a prophetic criticismof our sex drenched society (both heteroand homo), the call to heroic lifestyle,deeper prayer life, etc.

Some of us homosexuals are livingaccording to the wisdom of the churchand often we are striving to do this in anatmosphere of non-support, hate,isolation, loneliness, and ignorant or

untrained confessors. Instead of tryingto stir up more hostility towards us bymaking "homosexual" a synonym forAIDS in the mind of your readers, howabout a little support for those of uswho are living true to the faith? Whensurveys show that most Catholicsignore the church's teaching on birthcontrol, it really should be a pleasure tothe church to find that some practice thefaith in obedience. Their sexualorientation should «ot be an issue, as itwon't be to the Lord come thejudgement day.

Sometime, I suggest you read upon ethics and you will see thathomosexual orientation is not a sin.Those of us who have this orientationdeserve your support if we are living, asbest we can, as loyal Catholics. Pleasedon't stir up any more hostility towardsus than there is already.

A. With all respect to you, I mustbegin my response with the observationthat letter like yours are the majorreason I continue to write this column.As pastor of a large parish I have morethan enough to do already.

But each day's stack of mailreminds me how grossly illiterate somany Catholics are in their faith.

The Catholic Church does not, andnever has, taught or believed what isreflected in this statement by your rabbi.That many Catholics and otherChristians have believed this I cannotdeny. And that some groups or nationscalling themselves Catholics havebelieved it and even acted on suchugliness I cannot deny.

But even the baldest declarations inhistory about the need of belief inChrist for salvation appear in a contextof faith and doctrine that precludes whatis implied in your question.

Within the past two generationsthe church, through almost numberlessofficial documents, papal letters anddiscourses, and other means, hasrepeated its position about the great non-Christian religions. These religionsrepresent the sincere reach of men andwomen to find the answer to theultimate greai questions that haunt thehuman race about life and death - a n dGod.

Furthermore, these efforts,sometimes noble and sometimesstumbling, represent the work of theHoly Spirit in the world. They takeplace (we believe) under the influence ofJesus, the incarnate word of God, whosesaving grace and love ties underneath allthese searches for truth j even if thosesearches do not lead always to explicitbelief and faith in him.

We believe all this is true, ofcourse, in a particular way with theJewish faith.

Such is not at all a new belief. The.principle is an ancient one in

istianity: God's saving grace is therefor everyone who does not deliberatelyplace an obstacle to that gift.

Just one of many classicstatements to this effect is that of PopeLeo IV during a controversy with someheretics of his day (853): "Just as thereis no human being, past, present orfuture, whose nature was not assumedby Jesus Christ our Lord, says Leo, sothere is no human being, past, presentor future for whom he did not suffer anddie."

Any failure to profit from thatsaving death derives only from amorally deliberate refusal to believe,that is, a deliberate refusal when onesees clearly that belief is demanded byGod.

Leaving homeOnce in a while I receive a letter from a reader that

demands a response.Recently I wrote about the lack of affordable housing for

working couples in many areas of the United States. It isparticularly bad in certain regions tike my own, wherehousing costs doubled in the last three years.

To show how difficult it is for young families to savemoney for huge down payments, I mentioned my daughterand her husband, who are shelling out $1,100 a month forrent plus utilities for a moderate-sized house.

Here's what a woman from Arizona wrote in reply:"There is a solution to such insanity. Move to another state.

"Anyone who chooses to live in a high-rent district mustpay the price and not complain. I can't extend sympathy topeople who cling to the old neighborhood and don't haveenough backbone to move out and on to somethingaffordable."

"Sorry, Antoinette, but I can't feel sorry for yourdaughter and husband if they are afraid to move out of yourstate and trailblaze elsewhere."

I think there are a few things the writer of this letterneeds to understand. Let me start by relating a little of mydaughter's history.

Margaret was 17 when she ahnounced--full of headstrongindependence- that she was moving to New York City tostudy fashion design. I don't know any mother who feels safeand calm about a young daughter striking out on her own inthe direction of New York. But that was Margaret's choice,and off she went.

In her early 20's, my daughter traveled the world- eventoured Japan and China-by herself. Then she moved to Paris,all alone. After two years she met her husband and they"trailblazed" to Tahiti where my daughter started and operateda highly successful fashion company.

Somehow it seems ironic to suggest that my daughterlacks the backbone or courage to branch out into newterritory.

But what happened next says something basic andimportant about the nature of family and home.

In Tahiti, at the height of her business success, my

daughter became pregnant. She knew she could get rich inTahiti. But with her baby growing within her, her heart andsoul cried for home. She wanted her child born in America. Shewanted to share the joy of his birth with her mother, sister andbrothers.

She felt so strongly that her child deserved to besurrounded by all tha aunts, uncles and cousins who wererightfully his. She wouldn't deprive him of the family'sabundant love just for monetary reason. As her baby's birthapproached, she came home.

I remember I used to ask my father, "Dad, how come youcame from sunny southern Italy to settle in snowbound upstateNew York?"

He would answer point blank, "because this was where mybrother was."

Among the Italians, you stayed where your people were,and you didn't move.

One reason for the decline of "family values" in Americais the attitude expressed by the letter writer, who claims thatthe simple solution to housing costs is for young families tomove a couple thousand miles away to a state where houses are"only"r$100,000.

It would be the worst kind of materialism to leave yourfamily just for the sake of a cheaper house.

The Lord said, "Where your treasure is, that's where yourheart is." .

For many people the only place that will ever be called"home" is a place close to the treasure of their family.

Why do we fast?Lent is a time of fasting, but what does it mean to fast?The prophet Isaiah, born about 765 B.C., was given the

mission to proclaim the fall of Israel and of Judah, aspunishment for that nation's infidelity, but he denounced thehypocrisy of false fasting. The Jerusalem Bible translation ofIsaiah put it neatly:

"Hanging your head like a reed, lying down on sackclothand ashes? Is that what you call fasting, a day acceptable toYahweh? Is not this the sort of fast that pleases Me - it isthe Lord Yahweh who speaks: to break unjust fetters andundo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free andbreak every yoke, to share your bread with the hungry, andshelter the homeless poor, to clothe the man you see naked,and not turn from your own kin. The, will light shine likethe dawn and your wound be quickly healed over. (Is. 58:1-9)"

The Catholic bishops issued a pastoral letter on"Economic Justice for AH" in 1986, and in it they made astrong case for respecting the human rights of the poor andthe powerless.

The words of Isaiah tell us that to fast is to surrender ourwill to God's holy will. Fasting involves a self-denial, whichgoes far beyond dieting. Fasting is sharing bread with thehungry and sheltering the. homeless. When sacrifice takes onan altruistic character, it becomes a truer form of fasting.

So is it any wonder that as early as 765 B.C., God wastelling His people to fast by practicing the corporal works ofmercy? There are more subtleties to fasting than one mightrealize. For instance, one fasts in the true sense when onegives up a life of peace and quiet in order to fight for the rightsof the poor so as to alleviate their suffering.

The struggle for justice sometimes incurs the wrath ofthose who resent "do-gooders" and "bleeding hearts." Too badabout them. Critics we will always have with us.

The pyramids'mystery treasureAbdullah Al Mamun, who came to the Arabian throne in

813, founded universities, patronized literature and science andturned Baghdad into a seat of academic learning with its ownlibrary and astronomical observatory.

Al Mamun was informed that the Great Pyramidcontained a secret chamber with maps and tables of thecelestial and terrestrial spheres of great accuracy. The chamberalso contained vast treasures and such strange articles as "armswhich would not rust" and "glass which might be bent butnot break."

In 820, the young caliph collected a vast group ofengineers, architects, and stonemasons to attack the pyramid.For days they searched for a secret entrance but found none.Al Mamun decided to burrow straight into the solid rock butfound that hammer and chisel would not dent the huge blocksof limestone. So fires were built close to the blocks ofmasonry. When they became red hot they were doused with

cold vinegar until they cracked. Battering rams then knockedout the fragmented stones. The workers broke into a passageway that led them to a room with a gabled roof. Because of thecustom among the Arabs of placing their women in tombswith gabled ceilings as opposed to flat ones for men, thisempty room became known as the "Queen's chamber." Its wallswere mysteriously encrusted with salt as much as 1/2" thick.

Another passage led the workers to the "King's Chamber"which contained a large sarcophagus of highly polishedchocolate-colored granite. Needs of mothers and babiesIn an earlier column we discussed the basic needs

of mothers and young babies in response to a letterfrom a new mother whose 2-month-old cries for hoursand has feeding problems. The mother works parttime, and her husband's job often takes him away fromhome for several days.

Babies have a basic need for 1) consistency in thepeople and surroundings where they are cared for; 2)food that agrees with them; 3) people contact in theform of holding and comfort virtually all their wakinghours.

Mothers*? 'need 1) the firm conviction thatmothering their baby is their most important job andthat they are best qualified to do it; 2) support in theirjob as mother; 3) help with household tasks so as tobe free to attend to baby.

How might a modern mother with a house, a joband a husband who is often away even begin to meether own needs and baby's? If you as a mother trulybelieve that meeting these needs is important, somedrastic steps might be necessary. Here are somepossible changes in your lifestyle. By selecting one ormore, you may find your life as a mother calmer andmore rewarding.

1. Food. If your infant is really having difficultywith eating, I suggest you consider nursing your baby.It is possible to relactate. Nature will cooperate, but ittakes knowledge, patience and confidence. Do not tryit without support. Your doctor might help if he isfirmly convinced that breastmilk is the preferred

Work up the courageto seek out someone with a kind, listening ear and tellher, "I find it rough."

3. Consistent care for baby. Could great-grandmaarrange to live in your home or perhaps within oneblock for an extended period, perhaps one year? If shecould care for the baby daily in your home, you willachieve some consistency for your baby. However,

grandma, not you, will become the primary careperson.4. A work schedule that is least disruptive of the

mother-baby bond. Can you arrange to work in yourhome? Hire a baby sitter for shifts of two or threehours while you work. At that time devote yourselfexclusively to work. Then put it aside and return tomothering.

5. A temporary time out Quit your job or takean extended leave. You said you must work, butconsidering the needs of your child, you mightconclude that you cannot afford to work, at least for ayear or so. Many people who thought they could notlive on less have done so.

With a baby, a job, a house to run and a husbandwho is often away, you have the modern model of lifein the fast lane. As an adult, you may be able to^ 'Uit off. Your baby is telling you that she cannot ( >

Lent III: Stories of musicA couple of years ago I was speaking at a diocesan

family life day which ended with a joyous liturgy.Planners included some traditional and some modernhymns which resulted in an interesting response.

When the modern hymns were sung, young voicespredominated but when "Holy God, We Praise ThyName" closed the Mass, youths turned in astonishmentas their parents' voices boomed out for the first time.

Clearly we feel most comfortable with songs thatwere a familiar part of our childhood. So do ourchildren and we sometime forget that "Holy God"doesn't mean much to them because they haven'texperienced it as a memorable part of worship. That'sokay. They will probably sing out, "Sing to theMountains" to the astonishment of their children someday.

Music has been called the genre and the poetry oftoday's youth. They choose friends who like the samekind of music. They know the words to what parentscall senseless songs. While we often decry themessages in their music, we are unaware of some ofthe deeper values in some of their favorite songs.

Last year at a banquet, a young singer entertainedus with a song, "Greatest Love of All" by MichaelMasser and recorded by Whitney Houston. It's a songabout love, children and self-esteem. If copyright lawspermitted it, I would print the lyrics here so you couldappreciate the poetry in them.

When I came home, I asked my son if he had ever

heard the song. "Sure, Mom," he replied. "You'veheard me play it on my stereo lots of times."Apparently I had but I had never really listened to i tOne more case of parents discovering what theirchildren already know!

A similar thing happened with "The Wind BeneathMy Wings," a country ballad of marital and familysupport written by Henly and Silbar and recommendedto me by some parents in one of my workshops.

All this tells me that we parents have somethingto learn from our children and their music. It isn't allsex, drugs and freedom.. Much of it is profound whichspeaks to their deep feelings and longings. I believethat we would be better parents if we listened to theirmusic, at least some of it

Most of these Lenten columns focus on parentspassing on faith and information to children but thisweek I'm suggesting something radical: ask the

children to share their music with us. Not the songswhich raise our hair and hackles (which they don't wantus to hear anyway) but the ones that speak of values,commitment and meaning in life. Thanks to myyoung adults, I've discovered there are many of thesebut because of the beat, I've too often dismissed themas meaningless.

Music as a medium changes from generation togeneration. We had our favorite big bands, Elvis andthe Beatles. When we hear an old familiar songreplayed, we get hooked into earlier dreams, fears andhopes. I think it's a mistake to write off our children'smusic because we are unfamiliar with the beat Inspite of our prejudices I believe they have much toshare with us.

In the past few years, many stars have recordedsongs we should hear. Any parent with a child overten has the resources for obtaining these.

So this week let's turn Lent Over to the kids andinvite them to share with us their favorite records andtapes that speak of faith, life, hope and family, fellthem we are really interested in listening to whatspeaks to them. And let's not be judgemental or afraidto admit to ignorance.

As the saying goes, we are all ignorant, only ondifferent subjects, and we may be surprised at what ouryoung people can teach us about values through music.

The last time I wrote this column I shared somethoughts on my mother's auto accident and our reversalof mother-daughter roles during the time of her slowbut determined recovery. As I write this I am returninghome to Miami after being with my mother who is inthe hospital again recovering from surgery which wasnecessitated by a fall in her home: her formerly "good"hip has now been replaced with a twin to the stainlesssteel ball and spike that replaced her other hip jointonly last August. After less than two months ofnormal, independent living, she is back in the hospitaland soon to be transferred to a nursing home, again.

When I first received the news of this secondinjury, I felt a disbelief which gradually gave way to asense of being overwhelmed. When I spoke with herphysician and he expressed concern about her future,my feelings of anxiousness intensified tremendously.Coming into the situation already exhausted from aheavy work schedule and the stress of traveling anddecision-making, it probably felt worse than it actually

was.My question became one of how do I cope? What

do people do to relieve their anxiety and enablethemeselves to get through particularly difficult timesof any description?

The first response that, came to jne was thatbefore anything else I had to push the feelings of self-pity aside and concentrate on the tasks. As I did, Ireminded myself not to take too long a view of thesituation. I didn't have to anticipate and solveproblems that might be weeks or years in the future. Ihad to concentrate on what must be done that day - anddo it. There were times when I needed to bring thattime frame down even further - to this hour.^hisminute - if I was going to cope effectively.

The other saving thought that seemed to help wasthat I've been through tough times before. Then too Iwondered why they were happening and what goodcould possibly come from them. Only in time did Icome to see exactly how "God writes straight withcrooked lines." For the moment it was important toremember how faithfully God had sustained me and myloved ones in the past Only then could I renew my

spirit in the sure confidence that he would be thereus again - and again-and again.

That's as far as I got with the writing in theairport.

I was feeling really low even though I was doingmy best to think positively.. Looking back on thattime I realize that I had another need, one that thinkingabout couldn't satisfy: I was, and felt, alone. I neededsomeone to whom I could verbalize my fears, someoneto be with me, feel with me, and comfort me by theirpresence and their touch. I needed to be with peoplewho cared about me. I needed to be home.

There are times like these when God's love mustbe incarnated: His love for us must be demonstrated ina human, tangible way - by someone's intenselistening or warm hug or. caring presence. The familyis the perfect vehicle for this. Hopefully, someonethere will see our neediness and reach out to us. If not,we have to announce our need and give others a chanceto respond, to be there for us. No problem is so greatthat it cannot be greatly alleviated by positive thinkinggenerously supported by tender, loving care.

God gets a high rating"Family Ties," the NBC sitcom,

tried something different a few weeksago and it deserves a pat on the back fora solid, if flawed attempt at using TV

for something beyond 'yircks.'The episode, entitled, "A My Name

Is Alex," expanded the show to an hour,including a final half without com-mercials. In it, Michael J. Fox, as Alex,the Keaton family's college-age son,wrestled with his feelings over the deathof a friend.

The first 30 minutes of the showwere played in the normal style of the

.series. The episode opened with thefamily arriving home from the funeralof the friend and Alex showing signs ofbeing disturbed over the teen's dying atsuch a young age and the fact that hehimself came close to being killed inthe same car accident.

What saved him was his selfish-ness; he had rejected his friend's requestfor help in moving a piano. Alex'sassent to that request would have led tohis being in the car in which his palwas killed.

Questioning his right to be alive,what he might have done to save hisfriend ('Would he have driven slower hadI been there?1) and his attitude towarddeath in general, Alex invites a monk tohis home. Here, the sitcom took theexpected route, using the cliche monk asa foil for one-liners about celibacy.

That half introduced an off-stagepsychologist who asked questions whichinduced Alex to reflect on his life,values and belief in God. This ad-lesshalf was played out on a stylized setwhich allowed Alex to wander through

Alex explored his feelings about hismaterialism, selfishness, family, friendsand future. Quite remarkably for asitcom, this portion dealt with serioustopics while retaining humor and stay-ing away from a pat climax.

The writers also introduced some-thing previous shows and specials aboutdeath have not: the central question ofbelief in God. Alex, it became clear,could not reconcile his feelings abouthis friend, his selfishness, the seemingrandomness of events and the tragedy ofdeath until he answered the fundamentalquestion: "Do you believe in God?"

After searching for the answer,

Alex finally said yes.Rejecting the trendy God of Shirley

MacLaine and the angry God of TVpreachers, he declared a belief in aloving, forgiving God "who takes manyforms. One day, he is a dolphin. Thenext, he plays the stock market. Whatwould happen if he showed up on WallStreet as a dolphin?"

Alex's first, tentative steps towardbelief, defining God as both a loveablecreature and a wily manipulator recallsJesus's comments about doves andserpents (a tie-in I'll bet the writersnever thought of). What I hope willhappen is that the writers will follow upon this experience. By creating a spe-cial, one-half hour episode and by

"Family Ties," took an importantstep with that episode. I hope they havebom the courage and creativity to walk alittle farther.

Musical finds comedy in story of Abraham & SarahBy Prent BrowningVoice Staff Writer

A musical comedy about Abrahamand Sarah?

The concept momentarily bogglesthe mind. That is until composer CathyEllis makes you realize in her newmusical "Abraham and Sarah" that there.is indeed comic material to be mined ina patriarch who sometimes passes hiswife off as his sister and has a child atage 100.

Ellis, a St. Kieran's parishionerwith prior experience as a theatricalproducer and song writer, wrote themusical in the space of only a few

months.To date it has had several

performances to packed houses in aconcert version. The musical, whichfocuses on the relationship of Abrahamand Sarah, had its most recentperformance March 29th for the benefitof Birthright, a non-profit organizationthat assists unwed mothers and theirbabies. Ellis hopes to raise enoughmoney from investors to take themusical on the road.

The cast includes professionalsingers, actors, and musicians. Ellisherself plays Sarah, and Dick Sterling, aversatile performer with extensiveexperience both as a film actor and as a

singer, plays Abraham."It follows the scripture pretty

closely with some literary licenseregarding Sarah's reaction to things,"says Ellis who consulted a rabbi on thescript.

In the musical, Sarah sings of herembarrassment by Abraham's behavior,such as his building altars out of rocksand his introduction of Sarah as hissister in order to avoid problems with acovetous pharaoh.

"She's rather independent," Ellissays. "She thinks he's a bit of a bubblehead. He's kind of the one with his headin the clouds spiritually and she's moredown to earth."

Ruven Reyes and Adolfo Aguila,young men in their 20s, live withthree priests and seven other youngmen planning for the priesthood in amodest home called Casa Comboni inLos Angeles.

Part of their preparation to serveas Comboni Missionaries includesweekly visits to squalid residentialhotels. Going door to door, theseminarians greet the residents, tellingthem about the cathedral nearby and itsservices. In a highly transient area,they try, bit by bit, to build arelationship with people. Occasionallythey have the satisfaction of seeingsomeone they have counseled find away to move to better quarters.

It isn't easy. Some people shutthem out rudely; others, fearful of anyauthority figure, make lhe students yellthrough closed doors. Occasionally itis dangerous. They speak of teen gangmembers shoving past them on anarrow, second floor hallway racing toa fight

Their attitude comes as nosurprise to Jesuit Father AnastacioRivera, director of the SpanishSpeaking Apostolate for the LosAngeles Archdiocese.

For 12 years he has worked in

Hispanic ministry. He has givenmuch time to preparing lay Hispanicsfor ministry among the Spanish-speaking.

"There is a tremendous amount ofgood will among Hispanics," he says.

Father Rivera believes thetraining for these lay leaders must beeasily accessible — because of thestrange hours so many Hispanics workand the uncertainty of their lives.

And don't overload people'scircuits, he says. "Make the trainingvery practical, something they canimmediately apply in service to theirown groups."

"My greatest joy in ministry iswhen I see our people develop a senseof God's presence in their lives andbecoming enthused to reach out toothers," he concludes.

When St. Paul was on his way back toJerusalem at the end of his last missionary trip, hestopped off at Caesarea. There he stayed a few daysat the home of "Philip the evangelist, one of theseven" Greek-speaking Jewish Christians selected toassist in the administration of the Jerusalemcommunity (Acts 21:8). They were deacons in theliteral sense of "servants, assistants."

Very shortly their ministry branched out toinclude other functions. Philip is a good example.After the martyrdom of Stephen, another of theseven, "Philip went down to the town of Samariaand there proclaimed the Messiah" (Acts 8:5). Laterhe moved south in the direction of Gaza.

As he went along the road through the Negev,the desert area in the south of Judah, he encountereda- court offical of the queen of Ethiopia. Headedhome after a pilgrimage to Jerusalem/;fhe officalwas riding in his carriage, reading the book ofIsaiah.

Philip asked whether he understood what hewas reading and when he replied that it was difficultwithout someone to interpret it for him, Philipgrasped the opportunity (Act 8:26-35).

In both instances, Philip exercised the ministryof an "evangelist." The word is actually verygeneral, denoting one who proclaims the good newsof what God had done for humanity in Jesus Christ.

True love means service- Introduction

A most dramatic and unexpected event in the lifeJesus occurred at the Last Supper. Jesus rose fromthe table and with towel and basin, proceeded to washthe feet of the Apostles. Peter, reflecting the anxietyof the other eleven, protested to Jesus: "You willnever wash my feet." (John 13:8) Jesus answered, "IfI do not wash you, you will have no share in myheritage."

Concluding the washing of the feet of theApostles, Jesus said: "Do you understand what I justdid for you? . . .What I just did for you was to giveyou an example. As I have done, so you must do."(John 13:15)

In retrospect, we as well as the Apostles canbetter evaluate the setting for Jesus' issuing thismandate. Jesus was to die on the Cross the followingday. At that moment He was sharing His final mealwith His Apostles. Why should this be the momentto inject this clumsy gesture of washing the feet ofthe Apostles?

Jesus had spoken often and clearly during Hispublic ministry of the absolute necessity of love forthose who would be His followers. Here, at thisdramatic moment, Jesus demonstrated for theApostles in a powerful way that genuine lovedemands humility and service.

The revised liturgy of Holy Week has us re-livethis important episode in the life of Chirst and HisApostles on the night of Holy Thursday. We, like -the Apostles, were inclined to celebrate the LastSupper with a great sense of gratitude that Jesus atthis time instituted the Holy Eucharist. While this isa beautiful reality, unless it includes the lesson givenalso at this time by Jesus, it will be lacking thatmost important understanding: if we wish to be partof Christ and His Kingdom, we must serve others.(Matt. 23:11)

As we in this year of 1987 reflect on the HolyWeek mysteries, we must not take lightly the wordsof Jesus after the washing of the Apostles' feet at theLast Supper. "Do you realize what I just did for you"and "What I did, you must do." Service will be themeasure of love, both of Christ and of others.

This is sMM\gly suggested by the fact thatevangelists are listed along with "apostles, prophets,pastors and teachers" as having received a specialgift from the risen Lord "in roles of service for thefaithful to build up the body of Christ" (Ephesians4:11).

They rendered this service in a sort of stableway within the local community. Or they couldhave built up the body of Christ elsewhere,

The only other time the word "evangelist"appears in the New Testament is in secondTimothy, Chapter 4, where we read: "As for you,be steady and self-possessed; put up with hardship,perform your work as an evangelist, fulfill youministry."

The close connection between putting up withJiardship and serving as an evangelist suggests thatwitnessing to the%ood news can be difficult Notall will welcome it In fact some may resent it.

Nuns love 'Nunsense'Musical views the lighter side of convent life

DETROIT (NC) - For playwrightDan Goggin, a product of Catholicschools in Alma, Mich., the message ofhis off-Broadway musical comedy"Nunsense" is that "the nuns really arepeople."

Goggin wrote the script, music andlyrics for the show, running in 10 citiesaround the world, including Toronto andSydney, Australia, and soon, London. Inthis comedy, five nuns raise moneywith a benefit talent show to burysisters who have been poisoned by theconvent cook, Sister Julia, Child ofGod.

'First of all, nuns are ourbiggest fans. They comeback stage and say, 'whohad the inside track?"

Goggin told The Michigan Catholic,newspaper of the Detroit archdiocese,

"It irritates me sometimes when you getknocked by the critics who say nuns arenot like this. If they'd say "we don'tthink nuns are like this," that would beOK," he said.

"First of all, nuns are our biggestfans. Forever they come backstage andsay, "Who had the inside track?"

For example, Goggin said SisterHubert, the mistress of novices whogets into spats with the mother superior"because she really thinks she's gotmore on the ball than the mothersuperior," is a recognizable character.

"We had an actual mother superior ofthe Carmelites come to the show onenight in New York and she camebackstage and said, "Honey you have noidea how many Sister Huberts I know,"Goggin said, laughing.

At one point in the show SisterAmnesia signs a song, "I could HaveGone to Nashville," a country numberin which she explains how she could

have become a country star, but enteredthe convent instead.

Goggin. said, "The song is prettyfunny until the very end when sherealizes why she became a nun.

The very last line is, "I'm going tosay a little thank-you prayer that it allturned out this way," and ends with a

smile on her face."To me that is one of the most

important lines in the show.That really is the message too of

"Nunsense,"— that people have madetheir own choices and are happy.Goggin also spoke of his own ex-periences in the faith.

"I really enjoy going to Mass, es-pecially during the week. It is verypeaceful, a wonderful experience,..Icouldn't get Aong without those times.They are so peaceful and I feel sorry forthose people who have given it up."

Bishop of Samoa has lofty goalsMARYKNOLL, N.Y. (NC) -

- "Everything I do and everything mypeople do will be geared to becoming aself-sustaining church," said BishopJohn Quinn Weitzel of Samoa-PagoPago.

The bishop was consecrated lastOctober as the first bishop of the newmissionary diocese which is one of

seven Pacific islands that are part ofAmerican Samoa.

A native of River Forest, 111.,Bishop Weitzel was ordained as aMaryknoll priest in 1955. For severalyears he was an assistant to the order'ssuperior general, and then in 1979 wasassigned at his request to a mission inthe Samoan Islands.

Although his diocese has only nineindigenous priests, he said, he has sentone of them to work with Samoans inWellington, New Zealand. And he saidhe planned to send a catechist to open anew mission later this year in aneighboring island that has no Catholicpresence.

plays an especially important role inSamoan Catholic life, and one differentfrom anything he has seen in other partsof the world.

"Some people think the catechist ismore important than the priest," he said.

This role of Catholic catechistsdeveloped, the bishop said, to fit into asystem developed by Protestants. Underthis system, he said, villages establish a"covenant" with a minister throughformal ceremonies, agreeing to meet hisphysical needs as he serves the village'sspiritual needs.

But he said the minister must beSamoan and must reside in the village.It is virtually a requirement thatministers securing this "covenant"status be married. Bishop Weitzel s&i'4

Although the catechist ministryhas the advantage of deep integrationwith the national culture, limitationshave appeared because of a lack ofadequate training.

Bishop Weitzel said problemsappeared particularly in trying to reachthe youth. Unlike previous generations,he said, today's Samoan youth aregetting a modern education, watchingtelevision and learning about differentcultures.

Another problem the bishop facesis a shortage of religious available forstaffing the schools of his diocese. He iscommitted to turning its two highschools and four elementary schoolsover to the laity within five years.
