Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterwaysfor minor harbours/fish landing facilities, said an official com-muniqué.

A floating structure, be-cause of its inherent advan-tages, is an attractive solution and is hence being promoted by the Ministry. The benefits of floating jetties/structures over the conventional quay and fixed concrete structures include its cost-effectiveness, faster implementation, they are easily expandable and re-locatable, and have minimal environmental impact.

The Ministry has suc-cessfully implemented a few projects, including setting up passenger floating jetties in Goa, and water aerodromes at Sabarmati River and Sardar Sarovar Dam (for seaplane services), which are working satisfactorily. Several projects of the Ministry are in the plan-ning stage for the overall de-velopment and upliftment of the coastal community.

The Minister of ports, Shipping and Waterways (Independent Charge), Mr Mansukh Mandaviya, has

said that the Ministry has set a benchmark and evolved standard specifications in these guidelines at par with international standards. These platforms have several advan-tages over the conventional/fixed concrete structures. It is the endeavour of the Ministry to promote the development of such world class infrastructure across the country to achieve the best results of utilisation, durability, safety, low mainte-nance, cost-effectiveness and, above all, with minimal ecolog-ical impact.

The document of finalised guidelines along with Speci-fication/Schedule of Techni-cal Requirements (SOTR) for floating structures can be ac-cessed at http://sagarmala.gov.in/circulars/guidelines-floating-jetties-platforms-marinas-minor-harbors-fish-ing-harbours-fish-landing.

These guidelines would be helpful for all maritime states, State Maritime boards, Major Ports, IWAI and fisheries de-partments of the state govern-ments for their upcoming proj-ects, the release emphasised.
