Better at Bath Our course brings together architectural design and engineering so you can create spaces that are practical and sustainable as well as beautiful. You’ll learn how to design buildings with low-carbon footprints and a focus on comfortable and healthy living. There is a need for trained professionals who know how to reduce the environmental impact of construction. We’ll help you develop your design and technical skills throughout the course to meet this need.

You’ll apply engineering principles and your understanding of how people use buildings to come up with building design solutions. The new concepts and technologies you’ll explore will help you graduate with the skills to develop sustainable building strategies.

We also give you the opportunity to take a five-day intensive course in Passivhaus design. This trains you to become a qualified Passivhaus designer or consultant. There is an extra cost for taking this course.

Learn from experts in the fieldBased in our Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, you’ll learn from academics with expertise in the effects of climate change on the built infrastructure and the need for sustainable development. Their international collaborations and research activity feed into our teaching and contribute to your learning experience. Our research was ranked 1st in the UK in the Architecture and the Built Environment submission in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.

Use specialist facilities We have a range of facilities to support your studies including environmental monitoring facilities and an artificial sky with light meters. You’ll also have access to specialist computer and software facilities for environmental modelling. Our laboratories contain equipment that exceed industry standards.

MSc ARCHITECTURAL ENGINEERING: ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN1 year starting in September 2021

Develop the skills to become an environmental design specialist and create buildings that combine sustainability with comfortable living.

Start your future here Our course prepares you for a career in industry, research or academia by giving you the knowledge to make a valuable contribution to sustainable development. We work with industry partners to make sure that your studies reflect good practice in environmental design. Entry requirementsTo apply for this course, you should have an undergraduate degree in architecture (buildings related), architectural engineering, building engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering or physics.

We may make an offer based on a lower grade if you can provide evidence of your suitability for the degree.

British qualificationsA bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent, typically a 2:1 or above.

Professional and research skills for the construction industryGain the essential knowledge and train in a range of professional skills and research techniques for the construction sector.

Project and construction managementDevelop the project and construction management understanding needed to work effectively on multidisciplinary construction projects.

Environmental performance of materials and buildingsYou’ll explore how the different elements of a building work independently and together, focusing on energy flow, occupants environmental impact and low- carbon building performance. You’ll also develop an understanding of construction material choices.

Building integrated environmental systemsLearn how to integrate technological systems into building design to improve environmental performance in a holistic manner. This includes shading devices, lighting, ventilation strategies and renewable energy resources.

Assessment and modelling toolsDevelop your knowledge of modelling tools that make energy and environmental assessments on aspects of building design. You’ll focus on both individual elements and buildings as a whole.

SEMESTER 2 ONLY (February to May)

Multidisciplinary projectWork with students from other construction-related MSc courses to develop a building design. Investigate aspects related to your MSc in depth.

SUMMER (June to September)

Dissertation Carry out fundamental or applied research in a topic relevant to your studies. You’ll be supervised by one of our academic experts and supported by other staff.

Better at Bath Industry needs innovative engineers who can create sustainable solutions for the next generation of vehicles. To truly contribute to the future of your sector you will need a diverse and transferable skill set. Your studies will focus on the design, performance, and operation of automotive powertrains and vehicle systems. We will teach you about electrical components, and their mechanical contexts and constraints. This means you will understand both the fundamental principles of batteries, power electronics, and motors, as well as how to integrate these into a system. Alongside this, you will have developed skills in engineering project management, as well as vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics. By the end of your course, you should be able to analyse vehicle requirements to design and specify different types of propulsion systems.

Learn from experts in the fieldOur course draws on 40 years of specialist automotive research activities, including our new world-leading Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS). Our academics are the heart of IAAPS and bring their automotive engineering expertise and industry connections to their teaching.

Use specialist facilities You will have access to control, simulation, and rapid prototyping equipment during your degree. To support your chosen dissertation specialism, you might also use some of our research facilities. This could include our specialist automotive equipment, such as a chassis dynamometer or engine and electric motor research platforms. We also have emissions measurement facilities, a battery emulator, and a turbocharger test facility.

Engine and powertrain technologiesExplore thermodynamic and mechanical principles, emissions reduction, IC engine simulation techniques, and alternative automotive propulsion and powertrain systems.

SEMESTER 1 (October to January)Compulsory units

Vehicle engineeringLearn whole-vehicle design concepts including engine management, on-board diagnostics and braking and transmission systems.

Turbocharging and engine boostingLearn about turbocharging and boosting systems in internal combustion engines. Analyse turbocharger and supercharger interactions, performance and component design.

Engineering systems simulationUnderstand the role of simulation in design. Use mathematical modelling software like Simulink and Matlab to model complex engineering systems.

Professional skills for engineering practiceDevelop the communication, planning and critical evaluation skills needed to perform at a postgraduate professional level and as an engineer.

SEMESTER 2 (February to May)Compulsory units

ProjectFamiliarise yourself with the methods and techniques used in engineering research and design projects, including data analysis, project scoping and planning.

Engineering project managementGain project management skills to deal with a range of engineering projects from design and product development to large-scale production projects.

Vehicle dynamics and aerodynamicsDescribe a vehicle system’s engineering dynamics including how suspension works, how to predict vehicle ride behaviour and steady-state handling performance.

Electric propulsionLearn the high-level drivers of electric propulsion, three specialist sections on motors, power electronics and energy storage and a final section on practical aspects of electric propulsion component design.

SUMMER (June to September)

Dissertation Carry out an individual research project where you’ll analyse research data, formulate conclusions and communicate your findings in written and oral forms.

Better at Bath We offer you the unique opportunity to learn how to design and manage conservation projects while studying in a UNESCO World Heritage site. Taught by experts in the field, our course focuses on preserving historic buildings and cultural heritage worldwide. You’ll gain knowledge of philosophical approaches to conserving the built environment and its significance within the context of international standards and charters. You’ll also explore materials, techniques, traditional constructional principles and structural behaviour.

To learn about conservation in practice, you’ll visit and work on case studies at historic buildings sites in and around Bath. These help you understand how our built heritage is repaired and re-used, and develop your technical and communication skills. You’ll finish your master’s degree with a large research project in an area of conservation that excites you.

Study the theory and practice of preserving historic architecture and cultural heritage sites in one of the world’s most culturally significant cities.

AccreditationOur course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Graduating from this course makes you exempt from the RICS internal examinations and eligible for entry to the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC). It is also fully recognised by the Institute of Historic Buildings Conservation (IHBC).

Entry requirementsTo apply for this course, you should have an undergraduate degree in any discipline relating to the built environment including architecture, engineering, surveying, planning, geography, archaeology, history or management.

We will also consider your application if you have an undergraduate degree in other disciplines, such as history of art, and wish to gain a vocational degree.

We may make an offer based on a lower grade if you can provide evidence of your suitability for the degree.

Cultures and frameworks for conservationAdvance your knowledge of conservation philosophy and practice in a global context, including World Heritage Sites, cultural and designed landscapes, and national and international charters and frameworks.

Materials, construction and skillsLearn about traditional and innovative building materials, covering issues, application, characteristics and decay. This includes exploring building techniques, skills and tools, sustainability and environmental impact.

Structural conservationDevelop your knowledge and understanding of the history and theory of structures, construction and structural engineering in conservation practice. These will include assessment and diagnosis of structural failure and repair, challenges and techniques.

Better at Bath Combining the academic excellence and industrial networks from our outstanding School of Management and Faculty of Engineering and Design, our course builds your skills in leadership and management and teaches you how to apply them in an engineering context. You’ll explore the impact of new technologies and how they relate to management in the engineering sector. Your studies will include business analysis, product development and supply chain management.

Throughout the course, you’ll develop a strong foundation in management essentials such as project management, strategy, operations and finance. You’ll also have the opportunity to focus on areas of management that are most interesting to you.

Team working is a key feature of the course. The teaching environment provides an opportunity to develop your skills working in multidisciplinary teams, applying your diverse skills and experience to a range of contemporary case studies. We will do our best to help you find a placement and guide you through the process. Our partnerships team runs employability workshops covering CV writing and interview techniques, and preparing an application. We cannot guarantee you a position so if you are unable to secure a placement, you’ll transfer on to our 12-month alternative course and graduate with an MSc in Low-Carbon Building Design.

Integrated delivery of low-carbon buildingsLearn how to deliver more optimally designed low-carbon building solutions by integrating inter-related technical disciplines (such as building physics, BIM, dynamic modelling), within specified sustainability targets. You’ll gain the skills to manage conflicting design challenges, preparing you for the workplace.

Multidisciplinary projectWork with students from other construction-related MSc courses to develop a building design. Investigate aspects related to your MSc in depth.

SUMMER AND FINAL SEMESTER (June to December)

Professional practice placement Work in an industrial setting to gain industry-relevant professional development.

You’ll use what you’ve learnt so far on the course to work with different stakeholders such as clients, the public and other industry professionals.

Better at Bath Our course will help you take your career forward in a progressive area of engineering. It balances advanced theory with technical skills so that you learn to develop complete operational robotics and autonomous systems. You’ll explore robotics engineering and software, autonomous systems technologies, processes and products throughout the industry value chain.

Your studies will focus on tackling engineering challenges using whole-systems approaches. We’ll give you the tools to analyse and evaluate the impact of resources, processes and products. You’ll consider stakeholder needs, and technical, economic, environmental and social factors. MSc ROBOTICS AND AUTONOMOUS SYSTEMS1 year, or 15 months including 3-month placementstarting in September 2021

Learn the essential skills and techniques needed to develop robotics, autonomous systems, and embedded artificial intelligence.

Gain professional experienceA three-month placement gives you the chance to apply your knowledge in industry. You could go on placement with companies such as Intel. You’ll have the opportunity to do your individual project at your placement company or at the University.

We will do our best to help you find a placement and guide you through the process. Our partnerships team runs workshops in CV writing and interview techniques to prepare you for applying. We cannot guarantee you a position so if you are unable to secure a placement, you’ll carry out your individual project during the summer period instead.

Entry requirementsTo apply for this course, you should have an undergraduate degree in electrical and electronic engineering, electronic engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or computer science. We will also consider other relevant engineering and science disciplines.

We may make an offer based on a lower grade if you can provide evidence of your suitability for the degree.

British qualificationsA bachelor’s honours degree or international equivalent, typically a high 2:2 or above.

International qualifications example Chinese qualificationsA four-year bachelor’s degree with a final overall score of at least 75% (GPA 3.0) depending on the institution attended.

Indian qualificationsA bachelor’s degree with a final overall result of at least a First Class.

English language requirementsYou will normally need one of the following:

• IELTS: 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in all components

• TOEFL IBT: 90 overall with a minimum 21 in all 4 components

If you have an offer to study with us but need to improve your English language level before you start, we have a range of pre-sessional courses to help you. As long as you meet the English language requirement for your degree by the end of your pre-sessional course, you won’t need to take another IELTS test.

• you can go straight from your pre-sessional course to your postgraduate course
