at Nashoba Valley. A big “Thank you!” to
Betsey Reeves for hosting this event. The
Senior S&T clinics are well underway. The
Sunday River Patrollers School event was
completed earlier this month. The Certified
program also ran their Intro. To Certified
event that week-end at Sunday River, and
another one was held at Killington, in which
EMARI personnel were involved. The Wom-
en’s program ran an event at Waterville Val-
ley, and MTR is gearing up as well. There’s
lots going on! I hope you are involved in at
least one of these great training opportuni-
ties!
This past Fall, two notable national-level
events occurred in our ski patrol world that I
would like to express my appreciation to you
for. The first was that the Eastern Division,
including the EMARI Region, volunteered to
test out the electronic registration module
for the new IT system National has put in
place after a herculean effort by several
members, including our own National BOD
member Chris Pringle of Bradford [Ski Area].
This effort was not without
Well, fellow ski patrollers, we are in the
heart of the ski season with events happen-
ing all around the region and the Eastern
Division. Jon Longley’s OEC module of the
Senior Program came to a head on Sunday,
Feb. 5th, when his very dedicated group of
candidates showed their stuff in the exam

its trials and tribulations, but overall I must
say that EMARI handled the new registration
system with aplomb, even though there was
some frustration involved for most all con-
cerned. But, that is why we test these sys-
tems first, to identify what needs to be ad-
dressed, and get the follow-up work done
before bringing the entire organization on-
line. Thank you for helping the NSP sort out
this new system, that will serve us well for
years to come. We identified lots of prob-
lems, maybe more than was expected, but
Chris and his team and the vendor are all
working systematically to resolve all these
issues for next time, so it will be easier for
all.
The second important event was this year’s
national election that cemented Dave Walk-
er’s place on the National BOD for his second
3-year term, at a time when the board really
needs him. And we very nearly elected Wen-
dy Aarnio of Southern Vermont to the NBOD
as well, coming just 67 votes shy of doing so.
This was largely the result of regions step-
ping up their ‘get-out-the-vote’ efforts. I am
very proud to say that EMARI led the charge
in the Eastern Division with a 49.7% voting
percentage, which is extremely good! East-
ern Division overall went from 19% last year
to 25% this year, which is better, but there
is still work to be done elsewhere in the Divi-
sion. But, a big “Thank you!”, for your ef-
forts. The EMARI Region was second nation-
ally in voting percentage by Region only to
one Central Division region that put up 53%.
Thank you to all who voted, and to all the
leaders who pushed so hard to get out the
vote - “Excellent job!”
I would like to thank Joe Greenwood for his
service as EMARI’s Certified [Program] Advi-
sor. Joe needs a breather, and will be trav-
eling a lot for work, so he had to step down.
Like any good program advisor, he had a re-
placement in mind. Congratulations to
Scott Crofts on stepping up to take over as
Certified Program Advisor!
I would also lie to thank Patty Porter of
Nashoba Valley for her several years of ser-
vice as the EMARI Safety Team Member.
Patty did a great job for EMARI, helping the
Eastern Division Safety Team Advisor Jason
Tamulen establish the team (Cont’d next page…)
(…RD’s News, Cont’d from Pg. 1)

and conduct safety education events at EMA-
RI resorts. Life is getting very busy, so Patty
had to step down. We are looking for a re-
placement for her on the Safety Team. If
you are interested, please send me a text or
email. Jason could use the help.
And last but not least, I would like to thank
John Dale of Nashoba Valley for his service
as EMARI’s Webmaster. His help was much
appreciated, but as he had to step down
January 1st, Brian Chase of Wachusett
stepped right in and took over seamlessly.
Brian is hard at work already, so look for
some changes to the EMARI website coming
soon, including a more mobile-friendly for-
mat. Thanks to Brian for stepping up.
One last thought I’ll share: Through the ex-
cellent partnership EMARI has forged with
the NH Region in our S&T Training, I got to
know and become friends with a NH Trainer/
Evaluator by the name of Jeff Hayes. Well,
this past Fall Jeff took on the monumental
challenge of starting a ski patrol at a major
NH mountain from scratch. He had no pro-
cedures, no policies, and no patrollers to
start with, and yet he has built a strong,
working patrol in just a few months. I was
lucky enough to patrol with him for 3 days
last weekend, and it was a lot of fun, and
very instructive to see how he has decided to
do things on his patrol. Our ski patrol com-
munity is made up of some highly talented
and motivated people. Jeff is certainly one.
Jeff has the Waterville Valley Patrol well es-
tablished and humming right along due to
his own herculean efforts, and the help of his
(Continued from page 2) dedicated patrollers including Don Messier
and Dan Robichaud. If you are a Senior lev-
el patroller or above, and want to lend Jeff a
hand this season, please get in touch with
him. Depending on when you can get up
there, he may be able to put you to work for
a day or two. Contact him at
[email protected] if you think you
might be interested.
Enjoy the rest of the season, ski safely, and
as Bill would say, “Do your job.”, ...on the
hill. I know you all will.
Best,
Cal

NSP MTR Level 1 It was a great gathering of students and in-
structors on a weekend in November, 2016,
blessed with exceptional weather. Thanks to
our host, Patrol Director Dennis Gauvin, we
spent the two day weekend at Bradford Ski
Area for two full days of indoor classroom
and outdoor exercises with one overnight
camping session. We had a touch of rain to
simulate harsh conditions.
This was the first NSP MTR course run by
our newest Instructor, Dana Gray. Dana
was assisted by his Northeast Team from
EMaRI, New Hampshire, and Maine Re-
gions; Eric Zaharee, Deb Brown, Craig Gar-
land, Connor Grenier, Craig Spear, Sean
Klaboe, Jason Tamulen, and John Caron.
The NSP MTR Level 1 course is comprised
of 17 lesson topics. These lessons cover
topics including Personal Survival, Travel,
Back Country Considerations, and Search
and Rescue skills. These are all reinforced
with an overnight camping exercise and a
day of field exercises for Navigation, Tech-
nical Emergency Rescue Techniques, and
Incident Command System organized
Search and Rescue.
NSP MTR Level 1 is an introductory course
with no prerequisites. No special equipment
is needed except a tent and good sleeping
bag. The next NSP MTR offering by the
Northeast Team will be a day seminar in
March, 2017 at Pat’s Peak, Henniker, New
Hampshire.

One of the finest awards given out exclu-
sively in the Eastern Division is the East-
ern Division Patriot Star Award.
The Eastern Division Patriot Star Award is
awarded to active Patrollers who are or
have been members of the armed forces
on active duty in a Combat Zone deploy-
ment. Dates of active duty and location
(s) of deployment are required.
The Patriot Star Award Patch should be
placed on the right arm of the patrol par-
ka, one-half the distance from the cuff to
the elbow.
This award is truly a pleasure and an
honor to hand out. If you have any
questions about this award, or to see if a
patroller qualifies, please contact me at
[email protected] or 508-335-7991.
Another prestigious award that is given
out is the Distinguished Service Award.
It is given out to patrollers who have giv-
en outstanding service to the NSP and
the skiing public over a long period of
time. The minimum is 20 years. This
award may be used to recognize patrol-
lers who have made excellent contribu-
tions to the NSP.
This award may also be given to an or-
ganization such as a ski area, or [to a]
ski manager for outstanding support and
contribution the NSP. This award comes
with a plaque and a beautiful pin.
These are only 2 of the many awards
that NSP gives out. There are so many
deserving patrollers and perhaps a ski
area or two that are probably deserving
of these awards.
AWARDS Please consider [nominating] a patroller
or ski area for an award.

People often wonder what is involved in the Certified program. They think, ‘It is too
much work.‘, ‘I don’t have time.’, ‘I don’t know enough.’, etc. Those are the same
thoughts that I had. I jumped in to the program, worked hard, and I passed, achieving
Certified #680.
We are fortunate to have a lot of talented Patrollers in EMARI and the Eastern Division.
These people have helped me in my journey as well as [have] many others. There are
too many of these patrollers to name in this article. The funny thing is many of these
Patrollers that I learned from are not Certified, some are not even Patrollers.
There are many components to the Certified program, which encompasses all the dif-
ferent programs that the NSP offers; OEC, Avalanche, Chair lift Evacuation, Low angle
rescue, Risk Management, Hill Safety, Skiing, and Toboggan handling. Through your
candidate training, annual training, and Senior Patroller training, these topics are all
covered individually. The Certified program takes those individual topics and combines
them into one advanced program.
This program offers Patrollers of all levels an opportunity for training. Whether or not
they are interesting in taking the Certified exam or just being involved, learning, and
helping others learn. It is a great way to hone your skills and learn how other ski areas
and other patrollers operate. If you are interested in becoming a Certified Patroller,
honing your skills or just being involved, get in touch with me - I can answer your ques-
tions and tell you how to get involved.
The Division Website has a calendar of events including the Certified events. The test
is at Hunter MT this year, March 24-26. We are always looking for help; if you want to
see the exam, let me know. You can volunteer as a patient and see first hand what it is
about. There are also Intro. to Certified Pre-tests: The last one is scheduled for Febru-
ary 17th, at Loon. Look at the Division Calendar or contact me for details.
The Certified team can arrange to come to your area or offer training somewhere in the
middle. Take that first step…

dedication put into the program. The skills and knowledge obtained are invaluable, and in my opinion the program is as much (if not
more) about the journey as it is the outcome.
I would like to extend my heartfelt “Thank-you”s, to all who participated in the training
and Final Evaluation. Trainer Evaluators - Cal Goldsmith, Ed McNamara, Rob West, Ed Sargent (MH), Mario Espinal, Bill Welch,
(W. Mass.), Nick Rasher, Vince Grove, Edee McNamara, Jason Tamulen,
John Caron, Janet Read, Deb Foss and Josh Tamulen; Scene Managers -
Joe Greenwood and Christ Mitchell; Moulage - Chris Pringle; Patients - Jeff Morris, Jen Heil, Noah West, and Bob Gardner and
his enthusiastic group of Nashoba Young Adult Patrollers; Betsey Reeves, Nashoba
Valley Patrol Director; IT/QA— Michelle Goldsmith.
The OEC Module of the Senior Program is a great resource for those Patrollers interested
in building their skills and knowledge. If you are interested in learning more, ask someone
that has been through the program or reach out to me directly. Details on the 2017—2018 Senior program will be announced later
this year.

The OEC Module of the Senior Program, for-merly known as Senior OEC or Senior EMM, is designed t enhance the skills and
knowledge lf Ski Patrollers. The program fo-cuses on helping Patrollers build upon their
skills related to problem and patient assess-ment, resource management, OEC skills, and
transportation considerations. The program also works to build strong leadership skills in terms of communication skills and ability to
lead and direct others. It is a great program for anyone interested in becoming a stronger
more confident patroller.
This years program kicked off in early De-cember and culminated with the final Evalua-tion on February 5th. In between those
dates clinics were held twice a week to help prepare those interested in participating in
the Final Evaluation. Clinics focused on help-ing to develop strong assessment skills, the ability to quickly and effectively triage in mul-
tiple patient scenarios, and of course fine tuning and building upon a patrollers OEC
skills. All clinics were led by a dedicated group of Senior OEC Trainer Evaluators
(TE’s). This years Final Evaluation took place on
February 5th at Nashoba Valley Ski Area in Westford, MA. I would like to congratulate
Jordan LeBlanc and Kevin Brody, both mem-bers of the Wachusett Mountain Ski Patrol, in
passing the OEC Module of the Senior Pro-gram Evaluation. With this [pass], Kevin has also obtained full Senior Patroller status as
he completed Senior Ski & Toboggan elec-tives.
Though all candidates did not pass the final examination, every participant should take
great pride in the time, effort, passion, and

Thomas Flynn, PD at Ski Ward, just received a call for assistance from the Medical Man-ager of Special Olympics, Massachusetts. Tom writes that Special Olympics will be having their state winter games over two weekends - March 11th - 12th, and March 18th - 19th. On March 18th and 19th, the races will be held at Wachusett Ski Area in Princeton, Massachusetts.
‘We are in great need of medical personnel to help out at the various venues Your help
in spreading the word about the need for assistance at these events would be greatly
appreciated. The contact at Special Olym-pics is Kathy Savage. She can be contacted by email at savage@
comcast.net.
“Medical” volunteers will be periodically ski-ing the 2 race courses, checking to see that no-one is injured on the course. A minimum
of “first responder” is required of people who sign up for medical assistants. All ski
patrollers are qualified. Basically the job en-tails providing comfort, care, and initial as-
sessment until the areas’ Ski Patrol arrives at the location/scene. At Wachusett, volun-teers will have radio communication with Mt.
Wachusett ski patrol, so response by the pa-trol should be pretty fast.’

Hey Nature!
‘Rain, rain, go away, And come back some time in May.’ We’d like some snow, yes - here, today! Please give us snow; We want to play!
April usually is the month, Not January or February - thanks a bunch! You started Spring ‘way far’ too soon Now many skiers in this heat do swoon.
Snow is better than the rain with it’s drips and drops that can drive one insane!
We’ve no snow and need a bunch Have you lost it—gone out to lunch? Winter’s the time of year that’s here, What’s up with you, dear Nature dear...giving us temp’s that melt and sear?!
55 degrees in the air today My head is dizzy and I start to sway At this rate the snow will melt - right off the hill and down the drain...again with the driving us insane!
The snow is melting fierce and fast. We need a chilly arctic blast To push the winter out some more - Send us snow and frost and hoar.
We’ve no snow and need a bunch We know you’ll give it– we have a hunch! It’s too warm, and that’s a bore - Make our winter last some more.
Send a blizzard to kill the heat; A winter nor’easter would be neat. No more rain this month or next Give us snow and cold complex
Send blizzards, flakes, and flurries fast. To make this Winter last and last!
