REGISTRATION INFORMATION__ ___________________ Welcome to Diakon Living & Learning After 50! We are the only program in Schuylkill County that offers courses, events, activities and workshops exclusively designed for the active older adult. All of our offerings are geared to those who are 50+ and have a desire to:

* Discover their creative side * Explore the latest in health & wellness trends * Delve into modern-day technologies * Meet new people with common interests and enrich life!

Between these pages you will find over fifty courses, classes or special events designed with you in mind. If you’ve never participated in our program before, we hope you will find something that piques your interest and join us. If you’ve already experienced one (or more) of our courses, we thank you for your continued patronage! Although the classes are geared toward the 50+ crowd, everyone is welcome.

We are always looking for new and exciting opportunities that provide enjoyment, socialization,

learning/networking opportunities and making new friends. Consider it a Facebook connection

Looking for a gift idea for someone?

Diakon Living and Learning offers Gift Certificates of any denomination.

Registration Policies: 1. Class sizes are limited. Registrations received after the deadline will not be honored unless there are still openings. 2. Course fees must be submitted with registration. 3. A $30.00 fee will be imposed on any check returned by the bank.

Confirmations: 1. Confirmations will be sent via e-mail. 2. Registrants without e-mail will be notified via phone.

Refunds: 1. If a course is cancelled by Diakon, a full refund will be issued. 2. Refunds will be issued if you cancel prior to the registration deadline.

Cancellations/Postponements: 1. Diakon reserves the right to cancel courses due to insufficient registration or to make late changes in programs to provide the best possible instruction and facility utilization. 2. Courses in community facilities are subject to change when they conflict with regular facility activities. Advance notice will be given and make-up sessions scheduled. 3. If a course needs to be postponed due to inclement weather, you will be notified via telephone.

Other Information: 1. Waiting lists will be formed when classes are filled. Every attempt will be made to accommodate persons on these lists. 2. If you have an interest in a program we do not currently offer, contact our Diakon office at 570-624-3018 or 1-800-621-6325. 3. Special accommodations needed for people with a disability should notify our Diakon office two weeks prior to the start of the course.

Volunteer to Prep Income Taxes for Seniors

Since 1968, AARP’s volunteer-based program has helped nearly 50 million low- to moderate-income taxpayers. AARP (American Association of Retired

Persons) Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax preparation help to anyone 50 and older who can’t

afford a tax preparation service. If interested in volunteering, contact IRS-certified and Lake Wynonah

SEWING - Hat, Hand Warmers and Scarf $35/one session Peggy Grant, Instructor During this class students will learn to make a hat, hand warmers and scarf. The kit for the class includes the supplies for all three projects. Also included will be the pattern with easy to follow instructions to make many more of these items for gifts or just for yourself. All sewing will be stitched by hand. This class is great for beginners. Students do not need to bring anything to the class. CRAFTING WITH AIR DRY CLAY $15/two session Judith Lewis, Instructor This wonderful medium can be used to make a multitude of items, including jewelry, bowls, small trays, etc. Our projects will be formed from the clay, and then impressed with herbs, stamps, lace, letters, leaves, and so forth during the first week, then left to dry. The next class we will make our own glaze to glaze our projects and take them home to enjoy ourselves, or share with others. All supplies will be provided. Wear something old or a cover up! POSH PUMPKINS $15/one session Judith Lewis, Instructor Using lush, beautiful fabrics such as charmeuse, satin, and velvet each class member can make at least three Posh Pumpkins of various sizes to take home. The uses for these gorgeous faux pumpkins include centerpieces, fall decorations, gifts, display, etc. All supplies are provided, but if you have scissors that can cut fabric, please bring them along. THE ART OF WRITING AND WAX SEALS Judith Lewis, Instructor $15/one session If you long for the bygone era of handwritten notes, or you enjoy the social grace of a handwritten letter, then this class may be for you. During this class we'll compose our own notes/poems, then, using vintage dip pens and handmade ink, we'll write them on beautiful paper, and finally seal them with ribbon and a wax seal. We'll also make our own ink! Your note or poem can then be included with a gift - or be the gift itself. FALL RISK ASSESSMENT AND PREVENTION Don’t become a statistic...falls are a leading cause of hospitalization and disability for adults over aged 60. Keep yourself healthy, strong and fit and minimize your risks. The workshop will measure your fall risk through a variety of screenings and show you what YOU can do to reduce those risks and stay on your feet! Course is offered at no charge and includes course materials including a 65 page book. Spouses and caregivers are also invited to participate. St. John’s United Church of Christ, Orwigsburg September 15 & 18, 10 - noon, Register by September 8 LIVING A HEALTHY LIFE Feel better and live better! This six week workshop series is designed for people who are living with chronic conditions such as, but not limited to arthritis, diabetes, COPD and heart disease. Spouses and caregivers are also invited to participate. You can improve healthful behaviors, health status and reduce hospital stays. Designed by Stanford University, the program encourages us to take control of our health and our lives by positively managing our conditions. HEALTY STEPS IN MOTION Healthy Steps in Motion (HSIM) is the exercise portion of a comprehensive falls prevention program. HSIM is an exercise program that is designed for people of all fitness levels. The program is a one-hour session twice a week for four weeks, and is taught by a certified instructor; it starts with a warm-up, followed by strength & balance exercises and ends with a cool down-stretch.
