Dr. Özlem Er’in açılış konuşması ile başlatılmış açılış konuşmaları
Sabah oturumunda davetli sunumlardan ilki Mapping the Design World
platformu yöneticisi, aynı zamanda Aralık 2010 – Şubat 2011 tarihleri
arasında Marta Herford Müzesi’nde yer alan SPAGAT! Design Istanbul
Avondoglio’nun sunumunda
üzerinde durduğu önemli bir örnek çalışma Danimarka merkezli Index:
Design to Improve Life ödülleri idi.
CONFERENCECONFERENCEDESIGN AWARENESS FOR ALL
Every year a conference is held under a different theme on the
for 2014 has been identified as “Design Awareness for All.” The underlying assumption behind the conference theme was that design is largely accepted as a main competitive tool and there are increasing attempts to apply design thinking as a valid problem solving approach in various fields. In many countries, there are ongoing efforts to raise design awareness in all segments of the society. Exploration of initiatives taken in different countries to raise or create design awareness for all as part of the Design Turkey Industrial Design Awards 2014 conference will make a positive contribution, as the Turkish design community and representatives of public and private sectors influential in the making of design policies in Turkey will be attending the conference. The first session of the conference held on the 28th of November 2014 at the Haliç Congress Centre attended by members of academic staff and students of industrial design departments from different cities of Turkey as well as designers and related professionals, focused on the efforts and specific projects undertaken in European countries and Japan aimed at raising design awareness in their respective societies. The conference started with the opening speech of Prof. Dr. Özlem Er who also prepared the conference programme according to the selected theme and undertook the role of the moderator. The opening speeches continued with the presentation of RoT Ministry of Economy, General Director of Exports and the Executive Committee Chair of Design Turkey Industrial Design Awards Mr. Veysel Parlak titled “Evaluation of the Design Turkey Industrial Design Awards in the Context of Design and Innovation Support Programmes in Turkey”. The last opening speech was by Mr Tahsin Öztiryaki, the Deputy Chairman of the Turkish Exporters Association titled “Design and Innovation from the Perspective of Turkish Exporters Association”. Sessions begun following the opening speeches delivered by the representatives of the main actors of design and innovation support initiatives in Turkey, who evaluated the Design Turkey Awards System from their perspectives. In the sessions various aspects of the conference theme were explored, particularly the efforts and special projects undertaken in leading countries in design and technology to raise design awareness in their societies as a whole. The first keynote speaker of the morning sessions was the director of the Mapping the Design World platform, design educator and curator Max Borka who
also curated SPAGAT! Design Istanbul Tasarımı Exhibition held in Marta Herford Museum between December 2010 and February 2011. Although he was requested to explain the role of museums in raising the design awareness of people through examples from European museums, Borka interpreted the issue creatively and said Turkish Design should discover what was original in and unique to Turkey rather than following or imitating Western approaches. Following Borka’s colourful presentation, Professor Paul Chamberlain of Sheffield Hallam University at the UK, spoke about the Lab4Living Unit that he established in 2007 explaining how design could help increase the quality of life of the ageing population, with examples of research and applied projects aimed at this purpose. Following a short break in the morning sessions, Professor Masahiro Inoue from Nagoya Technology Institute, Japan delivered a presentation titled “Design Good Experiences – Case Studies from Recent Good Design Award Winners”. In his presentation Professor Inoue spoke about the Japanese Good Design Awards – G Mark system which was launched in 1957 and awarded to more than 40,000 products over the years, explaining the Omotenashi concept with the example of the Radiation System which won one of the 15 G Mark grand prizes given in 2011 This concept is exemplified in this product, marked by an approach designing not just the product but also the whole environment and the communication systems and therefore enhancing the lives of the patient and the personnel who will operate the product. The last presentation of the morning session of the conference was delivered by design educator and architect based in Denmark, Pete Avondoglio who gave a series of examples of Nordic design approach aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Northern Europe. He particularly emphasized the impact of the Danish origined award system Index: Design to Improve Life Awards . In the afternoon session of the conference, senior designers Jonne Harju from Microsoft Devices Group Design and İsmail Ovacık from Volvo Trucks gave insight into their companies’ efforts to understand and fulfill the changing needs and lifestyles of their users. They also mentioned how changes in technology and life styles force industries to have a dynamic perspective over their businesses. This last session ended with a question and answers session like all the other sessions of the conference and the conference was concluded to give enough time for the award ceremony to be held the same night.
