Read the passage and answer the question that follows
The great event of the New York cultural season of 1882 was the visit of the sixty-twoyear-old English philosopher and social commentatorHerbert Spencer. Nowhere did Spencer have a larger or more enthusiastic following than in the United States, where such works as ―SocialStatics and ―The Data of Ethics were celebrated as powerful justications for laissezfaire capitalism. Competition was preordained; itsresult was progress; and any institution that stood in the way of individual liberties was violating the natural order. ―Survival of the ttest —a phrase that Charles Darwin took from Spencer—made free competition a social as well as a natural law. Spencer was, arguably, the singlemost inuential systematic thinker of the nineteenth century, but his inuence, compared with that of Darwin, Marx, or Mill, was short-lived.In 1937, the Harvard sociologist Talcott Parsons asked, ―Who now reads Spencer? Seventy years later, the question remains pertinent, even if no one now reads Talcott Parsons, either. In his day, Spencer was the greatest of philosophical hedgehogs: his popularity stemmedfrom the Page 54 fact that he had one big, easily grasped idea and a mass of more particular ideas that supposedly owed from the bigone. The big idea was evolution, but, while Darwin applied it to species change, speculating about society and culture only with reluctance,Spencer saw evolution working everywhere. ―This law of organic progress is the law of all progress, he wrote, ―whether it be in thedevelopment of the Earth, in the development of Life upon its surface, in the development of Society, of Government, of Manufactures, ofCommerce, of Language, Literature, Science, [or] Art. Spencer has been tagged as a social Darwinist, but it would be more correct to thinkof Darwin as a biological Spencerian. Spencer was very well known as an evolutionist long before Darwin‘s ―On the Origin of Species waspublished, in 1859, and people who had limited interest in the nches of the Galápagos had a great interest in whether the state shouldprovide for the poor or whether it was right to colonize India.

Answer Key & SolutionSection 1 - Quantitative Aptitude
Q1
Solution
Here S=54, a =-12, d=3, n is unknown and has to be calculated. To do so we use the formula for the sum of an AP and get
54 =[2(-12) + (n-1) 3]n/2
Or 108 = -24n -3n + 3n2 or 3n2 -27n -108 =0
Or n2 -9n-36=0, or n2 -12n + 3n -36 =0
n(n-12) + 3(n-12) =0 Image not present(n + 3) (n -12) =0
The value of n (the number of terms) cannot be negative.
Hence -3 is rejected
So we have n=12
Alternatively, we can directly add up individual terms and keep adding manually till we get a sum of 54. We will observe that this will occur
after adding 12 terms. (in these case, as also in all cases where the number of terms is mentally manageable, mentally adding the terms
till we get the required sum will turn out to be much faster than the equation based process)

The event denition here is : 1st bag and black ball OR 2nd Bag and Black Ball. The chances of picking up either the 1st OR the 2nd Bag are
1/2 each.
Besides, the chance of picking up a black ball from the rst bag is 6/14 and the chance of picking up a black ball from the second bag is
7/11.
Thus, using these values and the ANDs and ORs we get:
(1/2) × (6/14) + (1/2) × (7/11) = (3/14) + (7/22) =(66 + 98)/(308) =164/308 =41/77

Solution
The probability of getting a prime number when a dice is thrown is 3/6 =1/2. (this occurs when we get 2,3 or 5 out of a possibility of
getting 1,2,3,4,5 or 6).
Similarly, in a throw of a dice, there are only 2 possibilities of getting composite numbers Viz: 4 or 6 and this gives a probability of 1/3 for
getting a composite number.
Now , let us look at dening the event. The event is ---- getting one prime and one composite number.
This can be got as:
The rst number is prime and the second is composite OR the rst number is composite and the second is prime
=(1/2) × (1/3) + (1/3) × (1/2) =1/3

'This problem' connects 'D' to the opening sentence. Sentence 'A' says "…….. various institutions ". Sentence 'B' gives the name of one such

The words - "while" and "this" which open the sentences 'B' and 'E' convey us that they are continuations of a previous statement. The
