(Creating a positive environment for teaching and learning)

What is Positive Environment?Positive here means beneficial i.e. beneficial environment for the pupil, institutions and in turns to society through teaching and learning. Implicitly it also indicates environment which foster congenial and beneficial environment for teaching and learning considering students perspective. It is the “practice that brings benefits to the service user by allowing them to understand that they are recognised as individuals and their needs and wants which are unique will be met by service staff.”

Constraints to create a positive environment

In a country like Bangladesh, it is not easy to create positive environment for learning. Because:

Most of the teachers, who are not professionally trained, like to follow the stereotyped system they had in their early life. So implementing new teaching style will create a conflict between the implementer and stereotyped teachers.

Baton, punishment, coercive method, focusing on memorization, following the teacher’s instructions, lectures, lectures and lectures are mode of teaching in here.

Constraints to create a positive environment Cutting a good figure in exam through

memorization process rather than understanding the concept more clearly is the basis of judgement for teachers in most instances. How the teachers are creating congenial environment for learners, in most instances, are overlooked.

Questioning in the class is considered in many instances foolishness. I remember, in class eight, I asked a question to my math teacher as I was not clear about the concept. He replied “You stupid, don’t you understand this” and never bother to explain the facts.

Asking questions effectively Dylan Williams’s basketball

style questions rather than ping pong style where questions will pass or bounce around the class room.

After asking question will wait for response for 3-5 seconds.

One question at a time. Variety of probing and

explaining questions. Finally asking the students

“any questions”

Using elaborated codes instead of restricted codes of language while teaching.

Will try to impart universal values such as truthfulness, respecting others, tolerance and non-violence. However, if it is necessary to uphold rich cultural and institutional values, I would not miss it.

I should be careful about my personal values and institutional practice which is a part of hidden curriculum.

Celebrate differences based on gender, race, ethnicity and disabilities.

Reflection of my pedagogy and behavior would be addressed in two ways:

Reflection on action (after the event thinking)

Reflection in action (thinking while doing)

There would be appropriate application of retrospection, review and reorientation and learning pattern will follow the Honey-Mumford’s pattern
