to our Armed Forces, conveying the gratitude of a grateful nation to our soldiers who selflessly serve the country in war and in peace alike.

Further, a 20 feet installation of “AMAR SIPAHI- The immortal Soldier” was unveiled at Select Citywalk Mall. The beauty of this installation lies in the fact that it had been carved out of 80,000 pieces of ornamental bullets and bullet shells. The shoppers visiting the shopping centre paid tribute to the heroes in uniform by writing messages of gratitude on postcards for the soldiers posted at Kargil. The occasion was marked with soulful performances, poignant speeches and video films in the Plaza in presence of martyrs’ families by students of APS Dhaula

Kuan, amongst others. The occasion also witnessed the launch of the book ‘Param Vir, Vikram Batra - the SHER SHAH of Kargil - A Father Remembers’ by Mrs Namita Suhag, President AWWA. The book has been authored by Mr GL Batra, father of Capt Vikram Batra, PVC (Posthumous) who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty during Kargil War.

The audience united in saluting the undying 'spirit of sacrifice' of the men in uniform, who guard the frontiers in dire conditions with the playing of National Anthem, marking the culmination of the commemoration of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

In addition to the role of ‘Saviours at Sea’ being the National Maritime

Search and Rescue Coordinating Authority (NMSARCA), Indian Coast Guard has been doing a Yeoman service to the local populace in providing solace on the challenging circumstances.

One such mission occurred on July 2, 2016, wherein amidst the fury of the monsoon, Indian Coast Guard took up the challenge in yet another life-saving mission to rescue ten lives. At about 1630 hrs, Coast Guard Air Station (CGAS), Daman received a telephonic information from Valsad Administration (Gujarat) regarding 10 personnel trapped in Daman Ganga River on National Highway (NH 8), between Dadra and village Narolidue to high rise of water in Daman Ganga River. The location was about 10 NM (Approximately 18 Kms) from CGAS (Daman), (about 175 Kms North of Mumbai).

The situation was developed when the localities in search of a missing family member in the

Coast Guard Rescues 10 Civilians Trapped in Daman Ganga River

shallow patches of the river bed were trapped amidst the overflowing Daman Ganga River and could not make it safely to the banks of river. Further, the inclement weather conditions and the expanse of river water around the position aggravated the situation for the local Administration and fire brigade to rescue these isolated personnel. Under these conditions coupled with

the inclement weather view deep depression associated with overcast sky, strong winds of 25 Knots, low CB clouds and incessant rains made the mission even more challenging.

On receipt of the information, the Air station was promptly activated and Coast Guard Chetak helicopter was expeditiously launched. Braving the strong wind conditions and inclement weather, the pilots manoeuvred the helicopter safely, reached the site and could identify the stranded 10 personnel. The helicopter crew quickly assimilated the situation and also identified a safe location for shifting the stranded crew. All 10 personnel were winched up safely by Coast Guard Diver and shifted to a safe location.

With the safe culmination of the operation and successful rescue of 10 precious lives, Indian Coast Guard has once again proved its mettle as Saviours and living up to the motto ‘Vayam Rakshamah’, ‘We Protect’.

It was an extraordinary evening in the prestigious Bharadwaj

auditorium of Army Hospital (R&R), the venue often used to host medical meetings. This time it was to felicitate an expedition team consisting of doctors and nursing staff known for their soft skills who displayed raw courage and mental robustness in scaling new heights of Mount Leo Purgyil (6791) in Himachal Pradesh on July 12, 2016. The team lead by the oldest member Lt Gen SD Duhan with history of heart ailment proved critics wrong by displaying his true mettle in leading the team in front and enabling the determined team to climb the virgin peak despite all odds. The evening was inspirational to say the least and guests included Lt Gen BNNBM Prasad, DGHS (AF) and Lt Gen Velu Nair, DGMS (Army) and Col Comdt both having extraordinary fascination for mountains and specialists in high altitude medicine in their own right. Mountains are tough and toughest can scale the peak and conquer it.

Our brave men in uniform guard our borders and send shivers to the enemy by being physically there all the time in these inhospitable and the most treacherous terrains of Himalayas. AMC never lags behind in supporting them. Medical officers and nursing staff are there with these mountain warriors all the time

to keep them fit and fine by caring them. They indeed stand for ‘We Care! We Dare!’. They are great source of inspiration to many and morale booster to our soldiers in these desolate and dangerous areas on the planet earth. accomplish is a true testimony to the fact that AMC is toughest and finest. Expedition team had many stalwarts besides Lt Gen Duhan, Commandant Army Hospital (R&R), an acclaimed Gastroenterologist and physically the toughest. Other members never lagged in matching his physical and mental robustness. Lt Col Rajesh Adhau was a war hero of Kargil who won Sena Medal gallantry, a rare distinction for a doctor. He is an accomplished sports medicine specialist of international repute. The youngest member of the team was Nursing Assistant Ajit, hailing from south India with just 4 months

of service. He was never exposed to such harsh conditions before.

Lt Gen Velu Nair exhorted officers and men for their adventurous spirit and advised them to pursue medical research in the field of High altitude. He added that that medical research is as important as conquering mountains as it enables others to conquer greater heights by enabling them to possess the supra-physiological state. He emphasised that medical research is important to devise scientific strategies for preventing human physiology becoming pathological, usual

otherwise in high altitude among inductees, often leading to health hazards. Undoubtedly mountains teach us and give us so much. They have been not only perennial source of strength and inspiration but also been the abode of the toughest and the best. This expedition of AMC is yet another feather in the cap in her glorious journey of over two centuries in the pursuit of excellence and achieving the most exalted motto “Sarve Santhu Niramaya”.

Mhadei Returns After Successful Completion of All Women Expedition

The Indian Navy’s only Ocean going sailboat, Mhadei, returned to her homeport, Goa on July 14, 2016.

A team of six young women officers from the Navy registered a thrilling historic first when they returned to Goa successfully after a voyage to Mauritius. The team on their maiden, and India’s first all-women crew ocean voyage, covered a distance of over five thousand nautical miles through treacherous monsoon seas and heavy winds. The voyage had commenced in Goa on May 24, 2016 and reached Port Louis, Mauritius on June 14, 2016. The team has thereafter successfully completed expedition on July 14, 2016 on reaching INS Mandovi Boat Pool.

The Skipper, Lieutenant Commander (Lt Cdr) Vartika Joshi, and her five-member team comprising Lt B Aishwarya, Lt P Swathi, Lt Pratibha Jamwal, Lt Vijaya and SLt Payal Gupta were received by Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Naval Command. Present at the occasion were Senior Naval Officers and sailing enthusiasts. In the welcome remarks Vice Admiral Girish Luthra stated that this was a landmark event, wherein the team had undertaken the first ever open voyage by an Indian women crew. He further added that this achievement showcases the courage and commitment of young Indian women, and would provide a fillip to popularise ocean sailing in India.

The all-women crew of Mhadei is presently training to undertake an expedition to circumnavigate the Globe, a feat achieved by lesser number of people than those who managed to climb Mount Everest. The first Indian to solo-circumnavigate the Globe on board Mhadei, Cdr Dilip Donde, has tutored and trained the young all-women crew.

The voyage of over 40 days at sea was aimed at exposing the Skipper and crew to rough seas expected during the monsoon period in the North Indian Ocean. This was to prepare them for the very rough weather expected to be encountered by them in the Southern Ocean during their circumnavigation of the globe. The aim of this training voyage was adequately met and the all-women crew has proved themselves capable and competent at sea. The crew would now supervise essential repairs to the boat at Goa and prepare her for the next voyage, when Mhadei would be participating in the prestigious Cape to Rio race 2017 commencing from Cape Town on December 26, 2016.

The all-women crew will thereafter shift to the new boat presently under construction at M/s Aquarius Shipyard Pvt Ltd, Goa. The New boat is of same design as Mhadei and has been named Tarini, after the river boat goddess of Goa. The keel of the boat was laid by the Defence Minister Mr Manohar Parrikar on March 28, 2016 at Goa. Tarini is expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy in February 2017 prior to India’s first all-women crew embarking on circumnavigation commencing August 2017.

Two solo circumnavigations, the first with stops by Cdr Dilip Donde, and the second, non-stop by Cdr Abhilash Tomy, has been undertaken onboard Mhadei between 2009 and 2013.
