It was primarily with the soloists of the next generation in mind that Itzhak Perlman decided to record these works — pieces that mostyoung violinists tackle at some point during their studies. Completely unknown to most of us, and virtually never recorded, these small-scale concertos by Oskar Rieding, Friedrich Seitz and Jean-Baptiste Accolay all date from the second half of the nineteenth century.Perlman injects new life and a sense of fun into works often seen as less than attractive, while retaining the original fingering (first position)for reasons of authenticity. What could be more inspiring for students in search of a model than to be able at last to listen to a complete,high-quality recording, with the added bonus of the full orchestral accompaniment rather than the usual piano reduction of the rehearsalroom. In the spirit of the project, Perlman chose to record these concertos with a student orchestra — specifically, that of New York’sprestigious Juilliard School, where he himself had studied. And don’t let the apparent simplicity of these concertos deceive you – it takesseveral years’ hard work to be able to play these scores well, and they are essential stepping stones on the way to tackling the majorworks of the violin repertoire.

Even more demanding is the Scène de ballet, Op.100 by Charles-Auguste de Bériot, the Belgian violinist who had studied with Viottiand Baillot, and who would later count Henri Vieuxtemps among his own pupils. As well as being an eminent teacher, Bériot was also aprolific composer, writing at least sixty studies, fifty or so other short pieces and ten violin concertos, some of which are still used forteaching purposes in music schools today. Perlman rounds off this intelligent and strikingly original “educational” album with a warmand vibrant performance of the most famous of the twenty-nine concertos written by Viotti, considered the founding father of all modernviolin schools.

C’est avant tout aux solistes en herbe qu’Itzhak Perlman a songé en enregistrant ces œuvres qu’abordent la plupart des jeunes violonistesau cours de leurs études. Totalement inconnus des mélomanes et pratiquement jamais enregistrés, ces petits concertos d’Oskar Rieding,Friedrich Seitz ou Jean-Baptiste Accolay datent tous de la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. À ces pages souvent jugées rébarbatives, lesoliste donne fraîcheur et malice tout en respectant les doigtés originaux (à la première position) pour ne pas en dénaturer l’approche.Quoi de plus encourageant pour des élèves en quête de modèle que de pouvoir enfin en écouter une interprétation intégrale de qualité,et de surcroît avec orchestre, au lieu de l’inévitable réduction pour piano soumise à la bienveillance variable des accompagnatrices declasses ? Symbole même de son dessein, Perlman a tenu à ce que l’orchestre qui l’accompagne soit composé d’étudiants, en l’occurrenceici ceux de la prestigieuse Juilliard School de New York dont il est lui-même issu. Mais malgré leur apparente simplicité, ne vous méprenezpas, il faut tout de même quelques années de rude labeur devant son pupitre pour jouer convenablement ces pages, étapesindispensables avant d’aborder les grandes œuvres du répertoire.

Plus exigeante encore est la Scène de ballet op. 100 de Charles-Auguste de Bériot, violoniste belge qui fut élève de Viotti et de Baillot,avant de devenir lui-même le maître d’Henri Vieuxtemps. Pédagogue réputé, mais aussi compositeur prolixe, De Bériot n’a pas laissémoins de soixante études, une cinquantaine d’œuvres diverses et dix concertos pour violon dont certains figurent toujours au programmed’enseignement des conservatoires. C’est avec Viotti, considéré comme le père fondateur de toutes les écoles de violon modernes, etpar une interprétation aussi chaleureuse que vivante du plus célèbre de ses vingt-neuf concertos, que Perlman conclut ce disque“scolastique” intelligent et fort original.

Als er diese Werke aufzeichnete, denen die meisten Geiger im Rahmen ihres Unterrichts begegnen, dachte Itzhak Perlman in erster Liniean junge Solisten in spe. Diese kleinen Konzerte von Oskar Rieding, Friedrich Seitz und Jean-Baptiste Accolay, die den meistenMusikliebhabern gänzlich unbekannt sind und praktisch nie aufgezeichnet werden, stammen sämtlich aus der zweiten Hälfte des19. Jahrhunderts. Der Solist verleiht diesen oft als wenig attraktiv angesehenen Werken Frische und Witz, behält dabei jedoch dieursprünglich vorgesehenen Fingersätze bei (alle in der ersten Lage), um sie nicht zu verfälschen. Was könnte motivierender für Schülerauf der Suche nach einem Vorbild sein, als endlich eine vollständige, qualitativ hochwertige Interpretation dieser Stücke zu hören, zudemnoch mit Orchester anstelle des üblichen Klavierauszugs, dessen Umsetzung den unterschiedlichen Fähigkeiten der jeweiligenKlavierbegleiter unterworfen ist? Ganz im Geiste dieses Projektes legte Perlman Wert darauf, dass das ihn begleitende Orchester ausSchülern bestand; in diesem Falle die der prestigeträchtigen New Yorker Juilliard School (die er selbst besuchte). Doch man lasse sichnicht von der scheinbaren Leichtigkeit der Konzerte täuschen: Es bedarf nichtsdestoweniger mehrerer Jahre harter Arbeit, um diese Seitenüberzeugend spielen zu können — sie sind unerlässliche Etappen auf dem Weg zu den großen Werken der Violinliteratur.

Noch anspruchsvoller ist die Scène de ballet op. 100, von Charles-Auguste de Bériot, einem belgischen Geiger, der Schüler von Viottiund Baillot war, bevor er selbst Henri Vieuxtemps unterrichtete. Er war ein angesehener Pädagoge und ein überaus produktiver Komponist:Er hinterließ mehr als 60 Etüden, etwa 50 kürzere Stücke aller Couleur und zehn Violinkonzerte, von denen einige auch heute noch aufdem Lehrplan der Konservatorien stehen. Den Abschluss dieses klugen und originellen “pädagogischen“ Albums macht Viotti, der alsGründervater aller modernen Violinschulen gilt. Perlman präsentiert eine ebenso lebhafte wie warmherzige Interpretation desberühmtesten seiner 29 Konzerte.
