Notes from the Director

For nearly a century now, the Wizard of Oz had entertained the young at heart and TIME has been powerless to put its kindly philosophy out of fashion. And so it is to the young at heart that we dedicate this production.

It has been said that it takes a village to raise a child. While that may be true, I can honestly attest that it takes a village or in this case, a harem, to put together a show of this magnitude. Back in April, when we had no confirmed director for this show, someone said Mike can do it! As I began to think about the possible daunting task ahead of me, I got shingles! Perhaps that is when I should have turned tail and run! Instead, I began getting a crew together to try and put this together. First up was my wonderfully talented daughter- in-law Kristen. If she had not agreed to be my musical director, I could not have gotten off the ground. Her talent and work with everyone, especially the munchkins is second to none! Next up came dancing beauty Lauren. Having worked with her through the years and her trying to teach me to dance, I knew she had to be the one for this show. She did a phenomenal job and I just love the jitterbugs and trees routines.

Jan Smith has been the best costume director! She had never done this before, but she has had great insight and fantastic ideas on how to make the munchkins, ozians, jitterbugs and winkies come to life. She was constantly running here and there to get things and ideas and the results of her tireless efforts are what you see on stage.

Danielle and Crystal are such loving and willing folks to work with. They both have been cheerleaders, gophers, researchers, folks to bounce ideas off of and always there when I needed them even when I did not know I needed them. Becky and Lesli have spent countless hours in the heat, painting, crafting and spicing up the set pieces to give you a fantastic set. Mr. Herman Toups has been so much fun to work with in bringing the magic of theatre to life. We spent hours at the theatre without A/C building what you see. His skills and ideas on how to make what I want come to life are unmatched. My son Shane and I spent hours researching and finding the just the right pictures and pieces for the rear projection. He is truly a talent behind a camera and a computer!

Lastly but not least, is this incredible cast and crew and volunteers! They put in hours of time and effort to learn lines, dances, blocking, reblocking, long nights and Saturday work days. What a blessing it is/was to have all of these folks this summer in the Wizard of Oz. You see, it takes a village!!! I hope you enjoy the show as much as we all enjoyed bringing it to you!
