Contemporary Korean Ceramics
Stepping beyond Boundaries and Converging with other fields
Ceramics today develops while influencing the economy of a country as a large cultural industry within the contemporary societal. It is
becoming a part of a cultural competition that has transcended boundaries while converging with other fields. Ceramics steps beyond
boundaries in art only to converge with other fields simultaneously as bearing all different aspects of life style not only as an approach for
a new paradigm but also as an inevitable approach to secure cultural economy. Therefore approaches in art and practical creativity that
reflect on artistic paradigms and globalization is becoming an important topic that maximizes cultural industry.
The Korea Contemporary Ceramic Artists Association focuses on the “well-being” of humanity through ceramic culture namely that of
both Korea and the world. It has played a pivotal role in leading Korean ceramics for 35 years since it was first founded in 1979 through
members’ exhibitions and difference ceramics related events. Every endeavor to expand Korea’s ceramic culture and to set new visions
have been made by the first generation of so-called contemporary artists right to those in the age range of 30s to challenge creativity
towards making Korean contemporary ceramics global.
As part of 2014’s projects the Korea Contemporary Ceramic Artists Association has been ambitions in producing a reference book on the
history of “50 Years of Contemporary Korean Ceramics”, in addition to the special invitational exhibition organized for the 46th
International Academy of Ceramics General Assembly in Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Through such endeavors the association hopes to
set its identity while implementing its visions. Our members consist of some 200 artists including those making utilitarian wares and
abstract forms. There is a wide variety of works being made by the members all focusing to meet the needs of the current times,
expanding the field and also looking at Korean cultural contents.
I would like to end by expressing my heartfelt appreciations to all those who have supported and encouraged the growth of our
association, to name a few I would like to express my thanks to President Jacques Kaufmann of the International Academy of Ceramics
and Professor/IAC Treasurer/ Ireland representative for Great Britain, Eire and the Benelux Michael Moore for initiating the
contemporary Korean ceramics exhibition.

Clay in Transcendence
Contemporary Korean Ceramics Exhibition
After Paris and its IAC 2010 General Assembly, where it was possible to see an impressive exhibition of Korean contemporary ceramic in a
large space at the French Capital, it is a pleasure to host in Dublin this new exhibition by Korean ceramic artists, beside the exhibition of the
members of the IAC in Dublin Castle.
Korea, no need to be a specialist of the domain to acknowledge that, is an important country recognized in its contributions and influences to
the ceramic history of the world from far past until our days. Actually, it is a country where we can see, when compared internationally, a high
level of its institutions dedicated to ceramics, including Universities, Museums, Fairs, and more generally a living body of Associations and
Institutions able to organize National and International events at highest standards of quality. Together, this scene is involved in the invention
of the future through an intense reflection on the ceramic practices today.
In this exhibition, curated and organized by KCCAA, it is possible to see a whole range of contemporary attitudes by ceramic artists – often
educators in Universities, beside their individual activity as artists – covering a large panel of expressions and techniques. From traditional
techniques revisited, to apparently new approaches, there is a spirit, a Korean “touch”, mainly made of the respect of the material qualities
and specificities.
We are looking forward to seeing these works in their physical reality in the exhibition, opened to the interest of the national and international
audience in Dublin.

About the Contemporary Korean Ceramics Exhibition
This year marks the 46th General Assembly for the International Academy of Ceramics. As the representative for hosting this year’s
IAC General Assembly in Dublin, Republic of Ireland for the first time we have put every endeavor to make the venue more
meaningful and special.
The city of Dublin has been most generous in allowing the use of the Dublin Convention Centre and the castle buildings and grounds
for the IAC exhibitions and related venues. I would like to take this opportunity to all those who have made it possible. As the
representative for this year’s IAC General Assembly I have attempted to make the event different by introducing contemporary
ceramics of different cultures, including the Design and Craft Council of Ireland’s Dublin Craft Trail which features recent transitions
in contemporary ceramics from Korea, China, Croatia and Norway.
I would like to express my appreciations to IAC and also to the Korea Contemporary Ceramic Artists Association for contributing to
the 46th General Assembly for the International Academy of Ceramics. Over the recent years Korea has played an important role in
influencing developments in contemporary ceramics through many of its international renowned ceramic events. Therefore it is a great
pleasure to be able to present a glimpse of its current transitions through the ceramic works featured in the Dublin Craft Trail.
I sincerely hope that the ceramic audience in the Republic of Ireland will enjoy and learn from this particular occasion. Lastly I hope
that strong ties will continue with cultural and ceramic exchanged between the Republic of Ireland and the Republic of Korea (South
Korea).
