Calling all Paramount Veterans!Calling all Paramount Veterans!

On Veterans Day, November 11, please join us in honoring all those who served or are currently serving in the United States military.

The City of Paramount wants to recognize our Paramount military personnel this November by giving them a patriotic face mask, an

exclusive Paramount veterans T-shirt and a greeting card from the Paramount City Council expressing our gratitude for their years of service to our country.

If you are a current resident who is a veteran or a resident who is active in the military, or if you know someone who is, please let us know by calling the City of Paramount at 562-220-2121.

Assembly Speaker Rendon, local businesses, volunteers hold successful ‘Back2School’ event

It started when California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon donated headphones to local students in need, which will help them with distance learning during the ongoing pandemic. When local businesses and residents learned of his generosity, they quickly pitched in. Northgate Gonzalez Markets donated 100 backpacks filled with school supplies, and a flood of additional donations soon followed. On September 29, a group of eager Paramount volunteers conducted a successful drive-though “Road to Recovery Back2School” giveaway.

Other business donors were CareMore Multi-Services, Domino’s, Farmers Insurance (Sammy Kotob Agency), Farmers Insurance (Kurt Wolf Agency), GM Properties, Kustom Made Graphics, LGH Ceramics, Lyon and Lyon Properties, Max B. Martinez DDS, Vicky Professional Services, WaveFront Technology, Weber Metals and World Energy Paramount. Other donors were Mayor Peggy Lemons, Vice Mayor Brenda Olmos, City Councilmember Isabel Aguayo, Paramount Unified School District Board President Vivian Hansen, Margie Domino, Nicole Duckworth, Rose Pasqual, Paramount Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Barbara Crowson and Chamber representatives Tony Warfield and Dora Sanchez.

Hard-working volunteers who made it happen came from Bayfront Youth & Family Services, the City of Paramount, Paramount Unified School District, Latinas Art Foundation, the Paramount Chamber of Commerce, Paramount-Tepic Sister Cities and the Paramount City Council. We sincerely thank all our donors and volunteers!

Students from Paramount USD and Our Lady of the Rosary School took part in the event.

If you think you need a COVID-19 test, call your primary care provider. If you don’t have a doctor, there are free Los

Angeles County sites available. To make an appointment at one of these, visit covid19.lacounty.gov/testing or call 211.

If you do need a COVID-19 test, the city is now offering free rides through our taxi service for Paramount residents who have no transportation. This is for Bellflower City Hall and Downey–Rancho South Campus locations, both of which use drive-through testing.

You must be a resident and have a scheduled appointment when you call for the ride, and the ride reservation must be made the day before the testing appointment. Call 562-220-2121 to schedule your ride.

County launches tenant legal aid programLos Angeles County

has launched Stay Housed L.A. County, a new program that connects tenants facing eviction with legal assistance and virtual educational workshops to help keep them in their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new program is a partnership among L.A. County, legal aid groups and community-based organizations to provide emergency support to tenants in need.

The StayHousedLA.org website offers useful information about rights and workshops for residents who need legal assistance, as well as other support, including case-management services.

Stay Housed L.A. County serves as an important resource for tenants who are facing housing uncertainty—including bilingual residents and those with undocumented status—with information about their rights and legal support navigating their inter-actions with landlords and the legal system. When tenants have legal representation, a family’s chance of avoiding homelessness due to eviction increases by over 70 percent.

Eco-friendly companies recognizedThe Industrial Waste Section of the Sanitation Districts of Los

Angeles County presents “Good Corporate Citizen” certificates each year to businesses that are in full compliance with extremely

demanding industrial wastewater discharge requirements. While nearly 1,000 companies in the county are eligible as “significant” industrial

users of the wastewater management system, only 432 earned this award in 2019 by meeting very strict standards. Ten of them are from Paramount.

All have shown a sense of social responsibility and protection of the environment by properly discharging their industrial wastewater, which keeps it off our beaches and out of the ocean. They deserve a big “green” thank you.

The Paramount companies are: Ace Clearwater Enterprises, Anaplex Corp., Ariza Cheese Co., Braun Linen Service, Inc., Carlton Forge Works, CMPC Transition LLC, Marukan Vinegar (USA), Inc., Paramount Dairy, Inc., and ST & I, Inc. The City of Paramount was also recognized. (Continued on page 4.)

Crime Prevention Month

October is National Crime Prevention Month. As part of the observance, the Paramount Public Safety Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s

Department are focusing on public outreach about certain types of crimes in our community. Here are tips to help you avoid vehicle and residential thefts and burglaries.

THEFTS FROM VEHICLES

• Always set the alarm or anti-theft device in your vehicle. If criminals have two cars to choose from, one with an alarm and one without, they will likely burglarize the one without the alarm—unless you’ve left valuables inside that are just too good to ignore.• Don’t leave any valuables inside your vehicle and never leave your valuables unattended.• Lock all doors and secure all windows (don’t even leave a tiny space for ventilation).• If you absolutely must leave anything of value inside your vehicle, conceal it before reaching your destination.• Never leave important papers in the car. Thieves can use these documents to steal your ID.• Try to park in busy, well-traveled areas.

PROTECTING YOUR HOME

Residential burglars look for easy targets. If the risk of being detected is too high, the average burglar will not attempt to enter your home. Whether you leave your home for five minutes or five weeks, recognize that it’s vulnerable whenever it’s unoccupied. While you cannot be home all the time, you can devise a home security program that works for you around the clock.• Always lock your doors and windows even when leaving for “just a minute.” • Never hide a house key under a doormat, in a flower pot or on a door ledge. • Consider installing an alarm system. • Consider becoming a dog owner. Dogs make lots of noise and most burglars won’t take the chance of getting bitten.

IF YOU’RE GOING OUT

• Use timers so that lights, radio and TV go on and off throughout the house to indicate someone is home. • For longer trips, be sure to stop mail and newspaper delivery or have a neighbor collect them daily. • Make your house look “lived in.”

• If you come home and see a broken window or a jimmied door, don’t go in. Confronting a burglar can be dangerous. Call the Lakewood Sheriff ’s Station at 562-623-3500 immediately.• In Paramount, Volunteers on Patrol are available to conduct a home check when you are out of town. Call the Paramount Station at 562-220-2002.

MORE CRIME-PREVENTION TIPS • Motion-sensor lights are a great way to illuminate driveways and walkways.• Install a wide-angle lens viewer in your front door. • Never open the door without knowing who is there. • Exterior doors should have dead-bolt locks with a strong, one-inch metal bar extending into the door frame. • Sliding doors and windows should all have ventilation locks, as well as auxiliary locks, to bolster security. • Be sure to include good locks for garage, patio and other doors that lead out through storage areas or spare rooms.

Read-along videos on City of Paramount website

During these challenging times, parents and kids may need an occasional break from distance-learning school work. The City of Paramount is here to help. On our Virtual Recreation page, you’ll find 25 reading-aloud videos

with staff members reading children’s books for early-elementary-age kids. Youngsters will be entertained, and they can read along, too. To see them all,

visit paramountcity.com/virtualrecreation.

Mental health resourcesWith our students and teachers conducting classes online for such a lengthy

time, it’s important that parents and caregivers watch for signs of anxiety and depression in children.

Feelings of stress or depression during this difficult time would not be unusual. These can take different forms, such as being withdrawn, acting out, disobeying and being tearful.

If you find yourself needing support in this area, call your pediatrician or healthcare provider. If you don’t have a healthcare provider, dial 211 to be connected to one.

Another valuable resource is the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health 24/7 Help Line at 800-854-7771—it’s free and confidential. Visit online at dmh.lacounty.gov/resources for other mental health topics.

Your consistent website messaging is keyB U S I N E S S C O R N E R

As small businesses across all industries tackle COVID-19, one area that requires our constant attention is the need to consistently tell our clients and prospective clients about our products and services. Some of those products and services might be brand

new because we’re adapting to these very tough times, so it’s important to make it easy for consumers to understand how we’re reinventing ourselves and how we continue to be important to our communities.

This means, along with everything else on our plates, that we have to focus on Marketing. And, in particular, we have to make sure our websites are easily found and easily navigable. We want current and new customers to have a seamless experience when visiting our sites, because this very seamlessness will lead to sales.

In light of this, I have found a helpful article about 10 ways to connect with your target audience through your website. It was written by Aslam Multani and was originally posted on www.smallbizdaily.com on September 16, 2020. Did you know that a study revealed that 75% of consumers make judgments about a brand’s credibility and reputation based on a company’s website performance and design? Hence, it’s imperative to ensure your visitors are able to connect with your website, thereby increasing your bottom line. Here are 10 proven tips to follow to ensure that you’re able to build a successful website.1. Develop a good structure & leave ample white space—How objects or photos are displayed on a website can play an enormous role in how people engage with the site. When objects are too near together, the interface may look busy, and users may find the impact distracting. “Visual hierarchy” is a concept that involves organizing visual elements in a manner that is visually pleasing and encourages online customers to find what they want. This has to do with observing standard patterns of eye contact and positioning website features in the right places where users are most likely to see them.2. Build ultra-useful, engaging content—Regularly updating your blog is a perfect way for people to get acquainted with your website and your brand. Blogs generated by small companies generate up to 126% more leads as compared to companies that don’t have blogs. If you have ultra-useful content such as videos, users can think of your website as a tool to be trusted. They’ll know they can still visit your blog for advice if they have a problem or want to learn something new. By adding eye-catching pictures and making your blog easy to read, you can make the content extra-shareable.3. Optimize the speed and responsiveness of your website—Have you ever visited a website only to get irritated with slow-as-molasses loading time? If your website is slow, potential buyers may take their businesses elsewhere. Besides that, website speed is an essential consideration in Google’s rating when it comes to drawing the web to organic traffic. Thus, one of the first steps you should make in improving your website participation is to enhance the speed and responsiveness of your website.4. Add a chatbot to your website—A simple way for visitors to connect to you is to add a chatbot to your homepage. They will get the answers to all their questions in real-time, with ease, instead of waiting for an email. Before they leave the website, the opportunity to communicate with guests makes the chatbot an invaluable resource for customer support. Make sure you have a name and a picture so users feel like they’re talking to a human person rather than a robot.5. Display reviews by customers—Customer reviews are considered a highly effective engagement tool. Depending on the product, they can help convince visitors to proceed with the purchase. Amazon.com is an extremely popular example, as it includes customer reviews on most products on its website.6. Use different types of content—Don’t let the contents of your website go dull. If you restrict your eCommerce content to written content and product images, you will lose opportunities to boost engagement and sales. The use of varied content styles, such as infographics, videos, maps and even GIFs, improves user interaction and traffic. For example, a product review video can be posted to your website, released to Twitter and spread through social media. This way,

with a single piece of content, you can create organic traffic, YouTube traffic and social media traffic. Adding photos and even videos on web pages can give the product a 360-degree view and show various ways to use your products (including how other customers use them).7. Create a survey or quiz—The first step in expanding your company is to consider needs of future clients. Creating a popup or survey of consumer reviews is incredibly simple. A questionnaire will give you insight into what your clients are looking for and input about how your company is doing.8. Suggest related items—When consumers click through the website, make sure that relevant information relating to the item they’re browsing is given to them. On a blog, previous posts are shown close to the one the reader is viewing. On an e-Commerce website, show items affiliated with the one the user is currently browsing.9. Use CTAs that match the journey of the buyer—Calls-to-action (CTAs) that you add to your content should suit your audience’s journey and be super-clear. For example, adding a “Buy Product” button to a blog post might sound a little offensive, but it may be appropriate to include a “Learn More” CTA. Likewise, you should add buttons to your web pages such as “See comments” or “Add to cart” to remind customers what they should do next.10. Enable interactive site search—Even if you have a straightforward web navigation structure, it can be sometimes still be difficult for visitors to search quickly and successfully. That’s why you should also have site search available so that users can locate items on your website without having to dig around. You can also step up site search functionality by incorporating dynamic search, autocomplete and face search to anticipate what users may be looking for and to make recommendations about similar items. Conclusion—You will significantly boost customer loyalty and increase revenue on your website by incorporating some of these website engagement tips. There’s no excuse for your website to be outdated, misleading or unreliable when it can so easily be made interactive, supportive and easy to access—and actually generate sales.
