Brief History and Outline

The Western Australian Amateur Football League (WAAFL) has a proud history since its humble beginnings in 1922. Over that time the League has been a progressive force in the development of "grassroots" community football in Western Australia.

The WAAFL has a strong base in the administration of a viable and thriving Australian Rules football competition with 43 member clubs, including 118 senior and 30 colts (U19) teams providing games for more than approximately 7000 registered players during a home and away season. There also are some 150 umpires involved in the competition. Volunteers form the base of the competition and without their tireless efforts at both League and Club level the competition could not be sustained. Value of Amateur Football

The WAAFL provides organized football on Saturdays where anyone whatever ability, can participate or contribute to the football industry.

The system in place allows players to play in senior football at any level they are capable of achieving. Colts (U19) learn the fundamentals of amateur football and its responsibili-ties after graduating from junior ranks.

At present the leagues goal is to increase participation and is self funded (through the clubs). Much more could be achieved in this area through significant financial assistance and recognition that the WAAFL promotes football as a training ground for elite players.

The WAAFL also provides a quality high standard competition for those players not wish-ing to endue the commitment to WAFL (second tier competition) training due to study or career commitments or simply a lifestyle that considers football a recreational pursuit, however is in a position to bridge the gap between amateur football and the Champions of tomorrow.

Many well known WAFL and AFL personnel began their careers in the WAAFL. Former West Coast Eagles and Hawthorn coach Ken Judge began his coaching career at an A Grade amateur club. Former Dockers coach Gerard Neesham played several seasons of amateur football and played at state amateur level.

Other high profile players include Troy Wilson (West Coast Eagles), Gary Buckenara (Hawthorn), Shane Parker (Fremantle), Simon Beasley (Western Bulldogs), Sandover Medallists Ian Dargie (2), Alistair Pickett (2) and Shane Beros.

Former Amateur players who have gone on to be senior administrators include former Chairman of the WA Football Commission Dr Peter Tannock, current WA Football Com-mission Chairman Dr Neale Fong (a triple A Grade Fairest & Best medallist with the WAAFL), current Chairman of Sydney Swans Richard Colless and former West Coast Chairman and AFL Commissioner Terry O’Connor are just a few who have gone on to contribute to Football at a higher level. The WAAFL is continuing to focus on the future and how the league uses its leadership and resources to set new standards of excellence and relevance for its member clubs' and various committees. The League's Strategic Plan for the next 2 years was imple-mented in 2003 and is progressing well with a view to stabilising the League's financial position and the establishment of a Club "culture" that will ensure a long and viable com-petition.

President’s Report

The past year has seen a continuation of the positive forward trends set in motion in 2003. The ongoing challenges, necessary changes, improvements, innovations and general stabilization in many areas have made the past 12 months more satisfying with the League working closer to-gether. The achievements of clubs in respect to financial viability, positive attitudes, greater ef-forts in looking after their administration responsibilities and their willingness to embrace the di-rections set down by the WAAFL Board of Management have made the League and Clubs much more viable than in past seasons. The WAAFL as a major participant in community (grass roots) based football has been encour-aged to play a leading role in the growth and success of football. The WA Football Commission (under the direction of Chairman Dr Neale Fong, Executive Officer Wayne Bradshaw, financial controller Michael Hnatojko and the Commissioners) have in the past few seasons put in place a

direction for all facets of the WA football industry to work closer together in order to achieve success and growth for the good of the overall game. Being a key link between junior football and the WAFL, the expectations put upon the League has required us (and Clubs) to look closer at our operations, responsibilities and public image. Amateur Clubs as a consequence have been under pressure to lift their administration and off field standards. The WA Foot-ball Commission has rewarded those efforts with greater assistance in the running of the League’s office structure and also with special projects (colts, state 23/s, umpires and coaching accreditation, insurance premiums and en-larged office premises). This in turn has enabled the Board not to increase fees and as such relieved some of the financial pressure off Club committees. We sincerely thank the Commission for their faith and investment in Amateur football to assist the game grow. Sponsorship partnerships are at an all time high with major contributions made by Carlton and United Beverages and the West Coast Eagles. With a mixture of cash and goods the viability of the League and clubs is assured provided we all fully support our major sponsors. Metisc, Burley Sekem, Cougar Sports, Elastoplast, Quill Stationery and Park Auto Centre make up the compliment of supporting sponsors. We appreciate their vital involvement with the WAAFL. The Board of Management and the Executive have continued to give support and direction in many areas that makes the League as a whole a progressive and stable organisation. With their wide diversity and experience in football, business and vocational fields, plus coming from all across the metropolitan area, they are aware first hand of what is happening at Club land. I am extremely proud of their achievements and common approach to all manner of varied issues. Once again, I have had great support from Vice President Milton Sanders whose knowledge and interest in all levels of football is second to none. Treasurer Brett Fullarton and Secretary Bruce Wainwright along with Peter Grosser, Mark Herron, Perry King, Graham Jacques, Lionel McQueen, Trevor Howard and Ross Rayson. They all continue to handle a demanding work load on a purely voluntary basis. Ross Rayson steps down this year after a lengthy and valuable service to Amateur football. His presence will be surely missed with his expertise in local government, colts and our radio programme. The ever diligent office staffs, under the management of Executive Officer Ron Webster, have once again carried out their responsibilities in assisting and working with club officials. Amateur football is family football and our staff Na-talie Archer, Matt Henson, Paulyne Webster, Brooke Wood and Jan Dellaca has tried to keep it that way. Ron with his wide ranging business and management skills as well as first hand knowledge of the game has been a great plus for the WAAFL and has complemented the workings of our Board as well as providing great input into the football world in WA as a whole. The WAAFL consists of many independent operations apart from the day to day business. My sincere thanks to all those people who on a purely volunteer basis make up and have made contributions to the P& D tribunals, media, state football, investigating tribunals, colts future directions, the quiz night, reinstatements, volunteer awards, finals, Community Football Council and DDC’s. They are all necessary participants for the good governance of the League. The dedicated Umpires coaching panel of Mike Ball, Bruce Wheatland, Paul Smith, Terry Kenny, Dave Mason, Tre-vor Prentis and Tim Priest and their valuable support have worked hard to put on the field competent umpires whose performances have been of a high caliber. The new umpires’ specific training venue at Higgins Park for all Commu-nity Umpiring has been a plus for the men in white. Our first full season of Under 23 state football had mixed results. However if we are to achieve our goal in providing football opportunities for talented players then the WAAFL has played its part. We look forward to future state teams for Under 23’s and Under 19’s. With the restructuring of district football under the WA Football Commission it gave the community competitions (WAAFL, Sunday and Peel Football Leagues) a direct input and voice via the DDC’s into junior football and WAFL

clubs. Board members Ross Rayson, Perry King, Peter Grosser and Bruce Wainwright along with Whitford Presi-dent Warren Nell have already made an impact onto the nine WAFL districts in the inaugural year. We look forward to next season when it’s initial “teething” problems have been resolved. Once again all for the good of our game. Co - tenants, the Sunday Football League, have continued to work closer in many areas and it is not far off when the administrations of both bodies are totally integrated, yet keeping their respective competitions viable and productive. The WAFA’s (single team competition) first year in joint control testifies to our co-operation along with the support of the Community Football Council. 2004 saw the first progress in compiling the written history of the WAAFL. To complete this task will be a huge under-taking and I thank the input and time from Don Baker, Neil Judge and Bruce Wainwright. The surface has only been barely scratched as we continue to accumulate photos and documentation from bygone days from many sources as possible. If you can help, please contact one of the above? WAAFL award winners, premiership teams, state under 23 players, umpires and coaching staff, Merit Certificate re-cipients (WAAFL, AFL and WAFC) are all to be congratulated for their achievements in gaining public recognition of the successes they have attained. Most of those achievements have been reached due to the great and untiring work behind the scenes done by our hundreds of club and league volunteers who continue to effectively make the WAAFL a great Western Australian sporting organisation. Thank you all.

John Davies

2004 completes my second full year in the position of Executive Officer and I am delighted to be in a position to report that the League, which is the Clubs, has continued to embrace positive change and have benefited substantially. The plans formulated and the changes implemented over the last two and half years were not only necessary but very timely and have now placed the Amateur Foot-ball League in the pre-eminent lead in Community Football. 2004 will see the League post its second consecutive profit which totally erases the $75,000.00 of losses from the 2001and 2002 seasons. The League is now genuinely in profit and has been able to recoup the majority of cash reserves which were virtually exhausted. In achieving these financial results the Board of the League has done so without increasing Club affiliation fees for the past two

seasons. Affiliation fees peaked at $697,179.00 and are now at $603,000.00 (excl GST), a feat that could not have been achieved without prudent budgeting but most importantly without the Club’s assistance in consistently meeting their payments on time. Our financial improvement could also not have been achieved without the support of our League sponsors and the assistance of the WA Football Commission, both of whom provided additional financial benefits and access to cost saving resources. Indeed the cash contribution from League sponsors has risen from $35,523.00 in 2001 to $70,242.00 in 2004, whilst donations of goods and services to the League and Clubs peaked at $81,200.00 this year. Following various submissions, positive negotiations and the achievement of required outcomes the assistance from the WA Football Commission both directly for administration support and via the Community Football Council has increased from $51,500.00 in 2001 to $117,337.00 in 2004. I would like to personally thank Wayne Bradshaw, Mi-chael Hnatojko and the Commissioners for their understanding and assistance with this additional, but very neces-sary funding. Fortunately the League is blessed with some very talented and dedicated Committee members who continue to be prepared to listen, evaluate and act and as such I am pleased to report that in the last 24 months we have been able

5

to address, virtually in full, all of the key issues noted in our initial three year strategic plan. During the year we were able to either solely achieve or be part of the following important initiatives:

• Entered into a lucrative three year major sponsorship agreement with Carlton United Beverages which result-ed in the League and Clubs sharing in substantial cash and product benefits.

• Finalised a formal sponsorship agreement with the West Coast Eagles with funds being directed towards the Colts competition and the U/23 State team.

• Establishment of AFL Insurances via JLT Sport. The result of which passed on significant savings to Clubs whilst providing increased and improved coverage for players and Clubs in general.

• Continued arrangements via the Paraplegic Benefit Fund to provide an additional $100,000.00 spinal injury cover for players 365 days a year 24 hours per day.

• Establishment of the successful U/23 State team concept which was supported by CUB and the West Coast Eagles who in addition also sponsored our Colts competition. The team had successful games against the U/23 Sun-day Football League team and the open age State Country Football League team. Unfortunately the boys were not up to the game against Victoria when they travelled to Melbourne in June this year. Apart from the first quarter the team acquitted themselves well both on and off the field.

• Successfully negotiated with the WAFC to enable much needed office renovations to take place. These reno-vations, completed just after the season finished, will enable our staff to be more efficient and thus be able to offer a higher level of service to all Clubs who come into the office or indeed phone through. We will also have a much bet-ter arrangement for handling tribunals and meetings in a more comfortable and confidential manner. I would like to sincerely thank Bevan Beaver of the WAFA for that Associations kind donation towards the cost of the renovations.

• Continued to upgrade and enhance the iScore Competition software programme which can now supply accu-rate data on all facets of our League and provides easy access to Clubs and the public for results and ladders throughout the year. There are still enhancements to be implemented and these will further assist us to administer the competition in 2005. I would like to sincerely thank Graham Hill, Managing Director of Metisc Computing, for his Company’s ongoing sponsorship and commitment to providing the iScore system to Amateur Football. As you are aware we had some considerable problems finalising fixtures at the commencement of the year. This was due mostly to Clubs at late notice withdrawing either in total or some of their teams as well as Clubs not notifying the League until very late that their ground was not available on certain dates. Ground access and availability continues to be a problem for which we are seeking a solution. The increasing cost of ground hire with less access is going to be a large challenge for the Amateur League and the WA Football Commission. We both have a charter to grow the game but if we do not have sufficient grounds for senior football and there is not improved coordination with Junior Football much of the development work to increase participation will be wasted as we will have no where to play. As we explained at the various Delegate's and President's Strategy meetings the League would not be able to return to profitability and maintain Club fees without increasing its return from Sponsorship and fundraising activities. To this end we again held a League Quiz night at the Italian Club and thanks to the support of the Clubs it was another great success. The success was not only financial, but went a long way to clearly demonstrating what can be achieved when the shareholder Clubs are prepared to work together and support a joint function. As a result of this function, Clubs that actually attended participated in over $10,000.00 of cash and prizes with the profit from the night going towards the insurance costs for 2004. The F& B Medal Presentation Dinner was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and was a great success. The support from Clubs was outstanding as was the attendance of a wide range of senior people from the WA Football Commis-sion, Government, West Coast Eagles, Carlton & United Beverages and other sponsors. We had 450 people in at-tendance and the League has received a considerable number of letters and emails congratulating the League and Clubs for such an outstanding evening. I would like to sincerely thank my staff for the excellent efforts in putting this night together and in particular single out Natalie Archer who compiled the power point video presentation for the votes and award winners. Thanks must also go to CUB who provided not only the beer for the night but spirits and the Half Mile Creek wine. Whilst this function again ran at a small loss it is a very important event that Clubs should be a part of and we need to acknowledge the Fairest & Best and Goal Kicking winners in all grades as well as the Champion Clubs at a prestige function no matter the small additional cost to the League. With the support of the Club’s, 2004 saw the introduction of the very important U/23 State team concept. We have now secured agreement via the Australian Amateur Football Council that both Victoria and South Australia will only play U/23 games against WA during the next 3 year tri-state carnival period. There are substantial benefits to the players and their Clubs from being involved in this concept. Young players get an opportunity to play and perform at a higher level of competition which ultimately will make them better contributors to their own Clubs and if they per-form well in these games hopefully it could provide them opportunities at a higher level of Football. In 2005 we are

6

committed to playing South Australia and Victoria in Perth. The South Australian game will be on Saturday 14th May

as a curtin raiser to the West Coast Eagles vs St Kilda game at Subiaco Oval. The Victorian game will be played on Sunday 12

th June at a venue to be decided, but possibly Leederville Oval.

Our Finals this year were very successful with excellent crowds and I thank those Clubs that hosted early finals matches and also all Clubs for the substantially improved behaviour of players and spectators. I would also like to thank those Clubs that provided volunteers to control the gates and scoreboards. It was an excellent effort and ena-bled many of the costs to be kept in Amateur football. With the 2004 success we will continue to have minor finals fixtured at Club grounds and the Preliminary and Grand Finals at WAFL venues. We will continue to charge for Pre-liminary and Grand Finals as this is a vital source of League revenue and helps offset the substantial costs associat-ed with the overall finals series and the small profit generated assists in keeping affiliation fees down. Congratulations to all teams who participated in finals matches this year and especially to those Clubs who have won the right to be promoted under the new two up two down rule. This new promotion and relegation rule ratified by Clubs at last years AGM will add new life and vitality into what was becoming a “flagging” competition. In 2005 we have two (2) new teams in A grade, four (4) different teams in B grade, four (4) new teams in C Grade and two (2) different teams in D Grade. This will make 2005 a very different year for Clubs in that many games will be against teams that they have never played before. This will create new challenges, new rivalries, friendships and rewards that may not have happened under the old system. I would like to sincerely thank our Umpires Board, Umpire Coaches and the Community Umpires panel for their sup-port and assistance in 2004. It was a year with some challenges given we embarked on putting in place a new train-ing and Clubroom facility at Higgins Park. Whist it was not without its teething problems the facilities and ground amenities will continue to be enhanced and it will be an excellent venue that will be very viable for years to come. The Community Umpiring panel concept continues to evolve and with some planned improvements in structure and resources in 2005 I am confident it will deliver more quality umpires then has been experienced previously. The WAFC is committed to a programme which focuses on improving numbers and quality of umpiring at all levels of Community Umpiring and we will be working closely with them to ensure our Clubs benefit from these initiatives. To Neil Judge, Mike Ball, Bruce Wheatland, Paul Smith, Trevor Prentis, Tim Priest, Dave Mason and Terry Kenny a par-ticular thankyou for your efforts. League Sponsors are vital to the financial health of the League. For us to maintain our existing Sponsors and attract new ones we need all Clubs to fully support the League Sponsors and the arrangements entered into. I would like to thank all the Companies for their support this year. These vital Sponsors are listed throughout this publication and I urge Clubs and their members to support where they can the products and services these companies provide. Lastly but certainly not least, I would like to sincerely thank the office staff for another exceptional effort in 2004. With the requirement to upgrade 7,000 player ID photos and registrations the staff and clubs endured some tough circum-stances but thankfully everyone survived. I would like to sincerely thank the tireless efforts of Natalie Archer, Matt Henson, and Paulyne Webster. I would also like to thank Jan Dellaca, who unfortunately had to recently resign, for her efforts during her time at the Amateurs. Without their concerted efforts during the year the League would have struggled and I sincerely thankyou on behalf of the League and its member Clubs. In closing I would again like to thank the Clubs and the many volunteers involved for your cooperation with the League office this year and most importantly for your time and efforts in assisting with the operation of the Amateur competition. I look forward to working in harmony with you next season with a view to cementing the future of the Amateur League and its shareholder Clubs.

Umpire Reports

PANEL UMPIRE REPORT

The 2004 season was the second year of the combined community umpire panel with a new facility at Higgins Park. This provided the opportunity for both umpiring groups and their associations to integrate better both on the training track as well as socially. Each weekend for both the WAAFL and Sunday Football League fixtures, some 300 ap-pointments were made for boundary field and goal umpires. This task was a massive one but encompasses the growth of the game at community level. To this end it was deemed necessary for a submission to be made to the WAFC for full time assistance for the community umpire coaches. At the time of writing it would appear that a person has been appointed to assist from within Umpiring WA. The result should see a streamlining of recruitment, training and appointment processes and will identify distinct career paths for umpires from juniors through to the AFL. This can only enhance the quality of umpiring at senior community level.

Training was conducted under the guidance of fitness guru Stuart Tempest and the coaching staff on both Tuesday and Thursday nights throughout the season. It would be true to say that the fitness levels improved dramatically from the previous year which was clearly dis-played on match days.

Some 18 field umpires officiated at A grade level throughout the year including six from the Academy. At A reserve level, there were 54 umpires who controlled games throughout the season in this grade many of whom were very youthful. This will stand us in good stead for the future, especially with the whole Academy panel umpiring in Com-munity football each week during the 2005 season. This will certainly assist to raise the standard of umpiring as the youngsters mature through their experiences.

The goal umpiring group were well served by a dedicated group who performed well throughout the year. However the challenge is for a recruitment drive to add much needed youth to an aging squad. The boundary umpiring squad was well serviced through the school’s program with many talented youngsters being introduced. However, this left the school’s program short of numbers for colts grades.

With the Umpiring WA directly involved at community level in 2005, clubs should expect very few problems with um-piring appointments with their greater resources for recruitment and access to personnel.

I would like to thank Paul Smith for his professionalism and diligence as the field umpire’s coach. To David Mason (boundary coach), Terry Kenny (goals) and observers Tim Priest and Trevor Prentice: thank you for you untiring ded-ication to the task

It would be remiss of me to congratulate the clubs for their support and improved relationship with the umpiring fraternity this year. There were less complaints, reports and tribunal hearings in 2004 due in no small way to the growing professionalism displayed by the WAAFL clubs. Recruiting and retaining umpires is a massive task so a vote of thanks is extended to the competing clubs for dis-playing a positive attitude toward umpires this season.

SCHOOL BOUNDARY UMPIRE PROGRAM

Once again this year the schools program provided boundary umpires for the colts grades and A, B and C reserve grades. Schools participating in the scheme this year included Morley SHS, John Forrest SHS, Seton College, Hele-na College. Forrestfield SHS, Warwick SHS and Duncraig SHS. It was unfortunate that Corpus Christi College did not participate as in the past mainly due to the previous coordinator leaving the school. It was envisaged early in the year that Umpiring WA would coordinate the program with a series of meetings taking place. This did not eventuate and past arrangements were employed which was most disappointing. However, I am assured that Umpiring WAwill take responsibility in the 2005 season. There is both a need and scope for the expan-sion of the school program into both field and goal umpiring disciplines. Hopefully, this will be addressed in the 2005 Umpiring WA strategic plan to service Community football. Some 70 umpires were appointed to games regularly and, due to the high demand in Senior League ranks, many were promoted to higher duties. Clubs are to be congratulated in following the payment pro-cess as there were very few hiccups this year in this regard. In conclusion, thanks to the coordinators in Peter Merritt, David O’Neill, Michael Pampacos, Warren Beckwith, Campbell Brown and John Batten for providing such excellent service to community football on top of their already busy teaching schedules. We look forward to their future involvement again in ensuing years. Bruce Wheatland Coordinator

State Football

This years representative program saw the introduction of a modified selection criteria where players under 23 years of age only could be eligible to represent our competition. The initiative has been vigorously backed by the WAAFL executive committee for a number of years in the belief that not only would it make for a more even competition with the Victorian and South Australian Amateur leagues but given the focus on young up and coming players it would better illustrate the worth of the Amateur competitions in contrast to the AFL and relevant State Leagues. Given this new concept excluded virtually all the regular representative players we have had in recent years we needed to start from scratch in respect to the selection process. After a meeting with A,B,C & D grade club Coaches and Presidents to explain the new criteria player nominations were called for. In excess of 100 players were invited to participate in the 10 week training program. Their ultimate aim to achieve selection in the State Under 23 WAAFL side to travel to Melbourne to play the highly rated Victorians in June. The players were required to train in South Perth every Tuesday night followed up by a Sunday morning rehabilita-tion session at Challenge Stadium. Certainly talent dictated selection as it does with any representative side but a huge emphasis was also placed on commitment to the program and match day club performances and I’m happy to say that every player that was even-tually selected thoroughly deserved their spot. Besides the numerous training sessions there was an internal practice match along with night games against the Sunday League competition under 23 year squad as well as the WA State Country open age squad who were gear-ing up to compete in their own National Carnival to be held in Bunbury later in the year. Both night games were keenly contested affairs in excellent conditions with the State Amateur side winning both. This intense lead up ensured we travelled to Melbourne fully prepared with our best available side, confident of a good showing against the Vics. Unfortunately the Victorians were in a class of their own and after a dominant first quarter where our boys were com-pletely shell shocked by their pace, skill and commitment to the ball the Vics eventually ran out comfortable winners. As the game wore on and with our players adjusting to the high standard we became much more competitive but the Victorian side showed us we still have a way to go before we can fully match them on the playing field. Certainly the end result was extremely disappointing given the resources the WAAFL put towards the new concept but I was very happy with the commitment and attitude of all of the players and given most have at least one more

year of eligibility I’m confident we’ll put a much better performance together in 2005 against both Victoria and South Australia who visit us on our home turf. The result not withstanding there is no doubt the inaugural Under 23 year old concept was an outstanding success as it allows young developing players who are keen to represent their State and possibly their Country in future years the opportunity to do so. I’d like to sincerely thank John Davies and his board for showing faith in me this year as well as League Executive Officer Ron Webster, State Carnival Coordinator Milton Sanders and State Team Coordinator Peter Grosser who ’s support has been fantastic. Their efforts in organizing the games, travel, accommodation and uniforms ensured this was the best prepared WA Amateur State side both on and off the field ever. I’d also like to thank the following people who put in numerous hours to ensure the program was such a success: Assistant Coach Kym Robertson, Chairman of Selectors Glenn Stephens, Fitness Coordinator Andrew Maiorana, Assistant Program Coordinator Neil Judge, Property man Guy Ziati, our two physios in Tim Jenkins & Ed Rhor and trainer Tom Reimer. In closing special mention must go to all the players, coaches and their WAAFL clubs as without their input and un-derstanding State Representative Amateur football wouldn’t be as alive and vibrant as it is today. Community Football Council

PRESIDENTS & SECRETARIES SEMINAR GIL FRASER OVAL, 22 MARCH 2004

As Chairman of the community Football council, I wish to congratulate the Western Australian Amateur Football League on another successful year, with the varied results in all grades competing in the finals. Congratulations are extended to all Fairest and Best winners throughout the various grades which was capped off by a very successful presentation dinner with many past amateur players and administrators as guests. To John Davies (President) and Ron Webster (Executive Officer) and administration staff, I wish to convey my appre-ciation and thank them for their support of the council as a body and for their assistance given to the affiliated leagues Sunday, Peel, Masters and Women’s Football Leagues. Their assistance was greatly appreciated. With the Amateur League support and assistance to Geoff Palmer and the Sunday Football League, we saw the suc-cessful introduction of the West Australian Football Association (WAFA). This competition is played on Saturdays by one team clubs, enabling smaller clubs from the Amateurs to continue to participate in 2004 with success while re-building their clubs. To all community delegates of the new District Development Committee’s, a warm “thank you” for your support and we look forward to the DDC’s greater involvement and focus on grassroots football in 2005. 2004 saw community based football continue to prosper as a united family through joint administration and umpiring between the WAAFL and Sunday Football League. All concerned should be congratulated on their efforts to improve grassroots community based football. Gerry Stokes Chairman

WAFA GRAND FINAL Magpies v Royals By Cameron Palmer

MAGPIES capped off a remarkable debut season by cap-turing the WAFA Cup with an easy 48 point win over fa-vourites Kenwick on Saturday 4 September, 2004.

Magpies started strongly with a five goals to two opening and were never headed. In a tight and entertaining en-counter, the second and third quarters were played evenly before Magpies finished strongly with the last four goals of the game to run away with the match.

After capturing the Smith Medal as the competition’s best player last year, Clem Rodney added the Kim Turner Medal to his growing cabinet with a best-on-ground display.

Rodney was able to give Magpies drive from the ruck while Mark Indich carried on his excellent form of 2004. Shane Phillips was another good player while Troy Ugle and Steven Williams each kicked three goals.

Kenwick did not have the pace to go with Magpies and paid the price for a slow start. Brad Hurst continued his own solid form of the finals and Justin Garlett played a key role for the Royals. League goal kicker Steven Garlett was held to just two goals.

For the Magpies it was a fairy tale come true after not having enough registered players and having to forfeit in round one, the club embarked on a memorable season to claim a well deserved flag.

The West Australian Football Association (WAFA) is a competition catering for Clubs fielding only one senior team, jointly administered by the WAAFL and Sunday Football League. Any single team in the Metro area is invited to join the WAFA and when a second team is formed, they have the option to join either the WAAFL or SFL. Single teams have been a part of the WAAFL for many years, but tended to dominate the lower grades played in. This year, 16 Clubs took part, playing 16 rounds plus 4 final rounds.

The League’s Fairest and Best Medal count—The Beaver Medal—was held at the Gosnells Hotel on the 24th August 2004, with Cockburn Lakes midfielder and captain Todd Musika winning the inaugural award by two votes from Roleystone’s Kynan Hall.

Carlisle Amateur Football Club

2004 was a disappointing year for us on the field. Starting with promise we were hampered by player injuries and as the season progressed the prospect of not making the finals decreased enthusiasm.

We will be making some changes for 2005 and are hoping to attract some experience and high level competence to improve our performance for the future.

We can do that because the club is well run and successful in it’s off field marketing and social activities. Success on field will follow from maintaining a stable management structure and being in a position to give the right people a framework for achievement by way of excellent facilities and off field support.

Rod Western—President

C.B.C. Amateur Football Club

The 2004 year was a frustrating year for our club and it was the first time in 6 years that we didn't have a team in the grand final. It was frustrating because potentially our A grade side was our best in the last dec-ade but we couldn’t put it all together and missed the finals. Our A Reserves got to the preliminary finals and our AB3’s won one final.

Off field, we were very successful and we are currently working forward to next year with the excitement of a new coach for A grade and hoping to get back into the top five.

Bradley Grant—President

Collegians Amateur Football Club

2004 began with a changing of the guard with several long serving senior players calling an end to their time at Collegians and opening the door for younger players to take the step up to the senior lev-el. We put a strong emphasis in our youth in order to secure the long term future of our club on the field and strengthen our senior football grades for the future years. The year contained mixed results

with several strong performances against highly ranked opponents and some narrow defeats to leave us out of finals contention late in the season.

Our greatest achievement of the year was the success with our colts squad increasing from 27 to 66 players and we being able to field two colts sides, both of which made the finals.

With the average age of our club in 2004 being 21, it made for a very enjoyable and social year of the field. We now have a large very young and enthusiastic member base at Collegians who are keen to see the Club be successful both on and off the field. Under the guidance of WAFFL Board member Trevor Howard, who we thank for his sup-port, the players are keen to keep improving on this. We would like to thank our main sponsors, many of which are long time and very loyal. To PKF Chartered Accountants, Swiftel, The Claremont Hotel and Supa Valu Nedlands a big thankyou for your support.

Grant Shortland-Jones—President

Coolbinia West Perth Amateur Football Club 2004 turned out to be a successful year for our club as the goals we set in 2003 were all achieved and the club is

now in an excellent position to prosper and become a force in the Amateur league. Our club has promised so much and it is a time of excitement for Coolbinia West Perth to be taking such steps forward. The work by the Committee in fundraising, sponsorship and good financial management resulted in two new floodlights being installed. Our sincere thanks for the support of Bob Kucera MLA our local member, The

2004 Club Members

Department of Sport and Recreation, Simon Turner from the City of Stirling and Greg Joice from Prolamps for their assistance in fast tracking the installation of the lights which resulted in an improved performance on field.

The season started slowly with new coaching staff and a large number of new players. The work by the coaching staff led by Jamie Wynne has seen our club turn the corner in becoming a competitive unit. Jamie’s positive outlook and support of the players was rewarded with a huge turn around of on field performances. Our teams in C Grade, C Reserves and F Grade were huge improvers however early losses in the season cost us dearly. Also congratulations goes out to Howard Frank, Oscar Green and Anthony Morgan on achieving 150 games for the club.

Further progression that the club has instigated is a closer link with the Bombers Junior Football club. This liaison will benefit both clubs immensely over the coming years resulting in a colt’s team being fielded by Coolbinia West Perth.

Special thanks must go to the Committee, Coaches and players for 2004 as without their commitment and hard work our club would not be so eagerly looking forward to the 2005 season.

We would also like to thank the staff at the Western Australian Amateur Football League for their guidance and as-sistance. We could not play our great game without their tireless efforts.

Jim Vellios—President

Kalamunda & Districts Football Club

The Kalamunda & Districts Football Club has completed a a dream 2004 season with all three teams (League, Re-serves and Colts) finishing premiers. The Colts and League being undefeated for the entire season. To cap off the season the club was presented with the WAAFL's Senior Champion Club award at the WAAFL's presentation dinner. This is a great achievement for a club who only started in the WAAFL competition 4 years ago.

Congratulations to the club's fairest and best winners Steven Bongiovanni (League), Jarrad Sizer (Reserves) and Danny Edwards (Colts).

The club takes the opportunity to thank its 2004 sponsors particularly Embers Fine Foods, McDowall Affleck – Con-sulting Engineers, Kalamunda Hotel, Premier Civil, Go Crete, Elders Insurance Kalamunda, First Choice Employ-ment, Australian Financial Services Kalamunda, and Healthway – Healthy Club. Such a successful season would not have been possible without their support.

Again made possible by sponsors as well as funding by the Department of Sports and Recreation and the Shire of Kalamunda, the Club was able to erect two new light towers at Ray Owen Reserve to improve the training facilities. This brings the ground closer to being fit for hosting Night Matches in the future.

Many thanks go to the Club's Committee who's behind the scenes work sets a firm footing for the ever-improving results on and off the field.

Committee—Kalamunda & Districts F.C.

Manning Rippers Amateur Football Club

The Manning Rippers in 2004 went from strength to strength. The appointment of experience amateur player Nigel Wood as the league coach proved pivotal in developing the young players in our club and moulding them into an out-

fit far greater than anything that Manning has played for several years.

With on field success in the league team, the reserve team followed and both teams found places in the D grade finals. There is no doubt that the club's on field success assisted with improving the club's bank bal-ance and while we are not a very wealthy club, the small profits gained will assist with our savings to build new lights to improve the ground.

The South Perth City Council, has offered a small amount of money to develop our club rooms. Those clubs who have visited us in the last few years would acknowledge that our clubrooms are adequate but not of a modern standard. We hope to offer better facilities in the 2005 season for our members and visiting clubs.

I applaud those clubs who honoured the rule to not bring alcohol to our ground during our home games. The one club that didn't were of course given a hard time by us and we hope that it doesn't happen again. Such breaches of guidelines make it difficult for us to justify the rules to our own players and is ultimately a pain in the neck that all peo-ple on committees can do without.

In the D grade league final, we congratulate Mosman Park. Should you progress to a higher grade we wish you eve-ry success. If you don't, however, we are happy to show you that we should have been finalists and not yourself! Our commiserations to Kingsley. All of us would have put our houses on your victory but in the end were glad that we didn't. If you progress to a higher grade, we also wish you every success but as with Mosman Park, we always look forward to the challenge. The final was the best game of football many of us had seen all year and everyone who was at the ground, was without doubt, entertained beyond expectation. All of the Manning players enjoyed the 2004 season and we look forward to 2005. We wish everyone a safe and prosperous new year.

Regards, Bryan Ullinger—President

On field, season 2004 like season 2003 is viewed as a season of lost opportunities, with the club having three our of four teams in the finals. It was disappointing that our B grade, B Reserves or E Grade sides could not go on to win a premiership and went “out” of the finals race in “straight sets”.

The Club had many new players in 2004 and is keen to recruit more in season 2005 but a big disappoint-ment to the Club was the lack of colts players. On many occasions throughout the season we could only field the bear minimum number of players as to prevent the club from forfeiting.

Unfortunately the locality o Mt Lawley is going through a major change in population and there is not the people who are eligible to play colts as of yet but the situation will change in a couple of years time.

The Club was fortunate to again produce a player who would win a major Association medal and congratu-lations go to Greg Hicks who shared the win with Daniel Young from Bassendean. Greg finished equal

fourth in season 2003.

Congratulations also to Brett Robertson who won the Association B Grade leading goal scorer for season 2004.

A big thank you to the hard working Committee for their support and assistance to me and to the club throughout the year and to all those who have helped me from the day I joined the committee in 2000. This is my last year as an official of the Club.

We would like to thank our sponsors for their support during the season. These include the Club’s major sponsor the Higgins family’s “Hyde Park Hotel”, Carlton and United Beverages, Rayners Supermarket, Bayswater Allied Health, Mechanical Project Management and In Depth Design.

North Fremantle Amateur Football Club

The 2004 season overall was a successful year for the North Fremantle club. Riding high from the A Grade flag the year before (first one in 43 years), we went into the year with high expectations. Julian Burgess was again appointed senior coach with the club fielding 5 sides. The A grade has an indifferent start to the season before hitting their straps towards the end of the first round. The Reserves at the mid point were in the 5 as was the A Colts who were

sitting on top. As the season finished up we had 4 of our 5 sides finish in the top 3. The committee could not have wished for a better end to the season with the A Grade finding form, the Reserves also doing well and the Colts under coach Scott Misich clearly the best side in the competition. Our A3’s failed to make the finals however our A4’s side finished as minor premiers.

In the wash up after finals we came away with 2 flags with both the Colts and A4’s winning premierships. The club had a successful presentation night with Dean Taylor being named the clubs Fairest and Best for the second time. The season for many was still not over….. The club has been fundraising for 18 months for a planned World Trip for its colts team. They left on the 7

th of October and firstly travelled to London for 4 days where they played a game

against a combined London side – London Barbarians – and won, they then travelled to Cork, Ireland to play a game of compromise rules against a local side (and also won), went to Dublin to watch Australia play Ireland in the first test, jetted across to New York for 5 days and then on to LA to play a game in the California league. The guys then after 4 weeks away ended up at Melbourne cup – not a bad end of season trip for 40 – of which 25 were players, predominantly from this years Colts side. Planning has already commenced for our return trip for our senior squads in 2006.

The committee would like to thank our players and supporters for a successful season as well as our major sponsors Mario from Metropolis Fremantle, Andrew from Swan Hotel and Steve from DSL.

Warnbro Swans Amateur Football Club

Well another fine season of Amateurs has ended, and the Warnbro Swans have once again enjoyed the thrills of finals action. This season was yet another successful one, both on the field, and on the balance sheet. Our Seniors, Ressies and Thirds played great footy through the year, and all figured in the finals. Our senior coach Barry Siddons was well supported by his assistant Graydon Newman all year, but the squad just couldn't get over the line in the finals. Ressies coach Peter Bailey took his charges all the way to the Grand Final, but it didn't work on the day and

we came out runners up. Thirds coach Ian Cramer progressed his squad further than any of our previous thirds teams have gone in a season. Our Colts improved remarkably under senior player Mitch Russell's coaching, and all of the club are keen to see these guys improve further next year. They are the future.

The year also saw some great, well attended functions, and the financial success of the club can be at-tributed directly to the dedicated members (harshly called drunks by some) who frequent the events on the social calendar, and pitch in to make the nights enjoyable for all. We are also blessed with some gener-

ous sponsors who's contributions help us keep our fees down to some of the lowest in the league.

On top of all of this are the band of dedicated workers whose efforts go unrewarded week in week out. Warnbro has a great band of volunteers who support the boys across all grades, and work tirelessly to make the footy happen each training night and Saturday. These people provide the backbone on which our success will continues to grow in season 2005.

I am stepping down this year after four years as El Presidente and I would like to wish the members and new com-mittee all the best for season 2005. I plan to remain active at the club through continually supporting the league

Wembley Amateur Football Club

2004 will be remembered for two things at Wembley. First of all, the relegation of our A grade side for the first time in the clubs history, and secondly, an unforgettable grand final win for our A Reserves. Chris Payne has earnt the title of “super coach” for this 3

rd premiership in a row in

3 different grades. This team is now bonded for all time and all players have memories that won’t be easily forgotten. Another chorus of “We are the Champions” will ring out somewhere during seemingly endless celebrations. This result shows that we have a core of quality players and talented coaching staff to build the foundations for our re-turn to A Grade.

Our AB3 and AB4 teams both featured prominently in the finals with the “4’s” narrowly losing in the grand final and both will look to improve on their performance in 2005. Our colts team finished 1 game out of the finals this year and with most of our boys returning for their last year in this age group hope to go a few better.

Sadly this year we lost our Head Trainer “Bobby” Tanner and clubman “Jimmy” Kenny. Bobby had over 30 years experience in all levels of football and has left a huge void in our club and our hearts. Jimmy was a club stalwart, cleaner, supporter and friend to all. They will be sorely missed. “Bless ‘em all, Bless ‘em all……..”

Whitford Amateur Football Club

The Whitford Football Club worked hard to consolidate its position within the A Grade Competition in 2004 and went extremely close to making it into the Grand Final along the way. Although our club was disappointed not to make it into the GF, our club look forward to trying harder next season and doing one better.

In our 30 years of existence we have had only a small handful of Association Medal winners. In 2004 our dry spell was stopped in its tracks with 2 of our A Grade players tying for the Jamieson Medal in Tyson Feist and Wayne Ot-way. We are very pleased for this result for our players.

Our club experienced large numbers again this season, and is anticipating nominating a seventh side in 2005.

Just like every other football club, we are reliant on continued volunteer support and would like to acknowledge their (volunteers) important involvement at Whitford.

Our Committee and Coaching panel by demonstration encouraged fellowship off field when visiting away clubs. Though reciprocation was modest from some of the other clubs, we remain hopeful that this type of interaction between all clubs could continue.

Congratulations to all of the "Premiership Clubs in 2004".

Warren Nel—President

Willetton Amateur Football Club

The Willetton Amateur Football Club would like to thank our sponsors and supporters for getting behind us for the 2004 season.

This season saw our senior sides rise from C Grade to B Grade with good results - Most noticeably the B Colts Premiership that we secured with a good win at South Fremantle Oval. Our F Grade boys also had a stellar season finishing well with some great victories and storming into the finals series.

Special mention is deserved by our colts team who won the award for the most successful colts team in the competi-tion. To all players - past and present - thanks for a great season and lets get ready for 2005. Go the Blues!
