Fairy Houses and Gnome Homes InstituteIt has been said that “A rustle in the wind reminds us a fairy is near.” Do you have a fascination with the mystical worlds inhabited by fairies, gnomes, sprites and other magical little folk? Let your imagination take flight as you design and draw fairy houses, enchanted gardens and gnome homes using markers, pencils and more. Explore classic fairy stories, learn about the mysteries surrounding them and then bring your designs to life as you create enchanting little homes where your fairies and magical creatures can live and play. Kids in the Kitchen: Culinary Arts InstituteJoin the ranks of young chefs exploding onto the culinary scene and work with a professional chef to create fabulous dishes every day. Off the Eaten Path: Culinary Arts InstituteThe keys to the kitchen are yours in this hands-on culinary adventure. Guided by a professional chef you will unlock the flavors of the world in the daily dishes that you create. Hone your skills as you learn knife techniques and how to use of a variety of kitchen tools and equipment to help develop your cooking style. Faux Stained Glass Mixed Media PortfolioAbandon all the “rules” and create wildly colored and patterned background pages using acrylic paint and a variety of mark-making tools. Intermediate Video Game DesignContinue to explore the high-tech, fast moving world of video games, game design concepts and the possibility to turn your passion into a real life career in this class for intermediate game design students. You’ll work with a production team to experience the game design life cycle as you develop a fun and rewarding team project. Learn how to add polish and charm to your game through the use of GameMaker scripting language (GML) and you’ll be amazed at the results! Note: This class is recommended for students with some prior game design experience or for those who have taken the introduction to Video Game Design class. Living Through the Lens: Self Portraits in PhotographyHave you ever wanted to share your personal vision with the world? In this photography class you’ll use the art of self-portraits as you are challenged to be the subject of your camera’s lens. You’ll be inspired as you discover creative new ways to use photography to express your uniqueness and how you see yourself. Through exploratory photography walks

you will gather images and then experiment with paints and mixed media techniques to create a self-discovery photo journal to keep. Minecraft MadnessExplore Turtle Island! Join other students who share your passion for Minecraft and take your gameplay to the next level. Using the infinite possibilities of Minecraft you will create, explore and problem-solve as you approach the game from a new angle. Building on basic programming techniques you’ll ‘scratch’ the surface to learn about the construction of gaming programs in hands on activities. Game Maker software will take you to the next level as you experiment with creating gaming elements of your own. Mobile apps are the next step as you’ll dive into into the details of app construction with your instructor as your guide. You’ll create 1-2 apps each day as you discover your digital potential using the latest and greatest computer technologies and state-of-the-art equipment in this exciting class. Horsing Around at the Flying L RanchCalling all horse lovers! Learn to ride and care for horses this summer in classes that are based on CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association) instruction. Each session includes mounted lessons, lectures on horsemanship theory and safety, horse related crafts and activities, as well as an introduction to the wholesome ranch life. Campers participate with pride in the routine hands on care and handling of horses and find out what it really means to own a horse. Note: At the start of each session, campers are evaluated, matching mounts and lesson plans to the ability of the individual. Come join this exciting rowing camp and learn about a sport that has been part of the Olympics since 1900. You’ll meet new friends and experience the excitement of rowing on the open water in daily sessions at Emigrant Lake. To begin, you’ll row on indoor rowing machines at the Ashland Rowing Club’s Boathouse and after learning basic terminology, water and boat safety and proper equipment handling you’ll move to the water and experience the joy of applying your technique as you swiftly move a rowing shell across the water in coordination with other campers. Note: Campers are required to pass a swim/float test prior to joining the class. SCIENCE/ STRATEGY/ENGINEERING Engineering Explorers InstituteHydrolic Judobots and hovercrafts are just two of the amazing engineering projects that you’ll work on in a wild week of fun designing, building and operating contraptions and catapults that you and your engineering team will create. The sky’s the limit as you explore the process real-world engineers use to get a design from the paper to a finished product while you use your own skill and creativity on each design challenge. The “FBI” is looking for you! Get a glimpse of what it’s like to be a field biologist in this fun-filled nature and science institute. Discover your inner scientist through a week of hands on experimentation and investigation that includes aquatic ecology, wildlife management, entomology, fire ecology, botany and restoration ecology. Get your hands dirty as you help to determine the health of our local streams, restore native habitat, survey flora and fauna and record your field observations in your nature journal. Conduct surveys on bird, mammal, reptile, amphibian and insect populations in the open air and you might decide that a career working in the outdoors is just the thing for you. Geocaching JourneysIn this hands-on class you’ll engage in the study of geography by exploring the interplay between humans and natural landscapes. You’ll embark on a scavenger hunt using GPS coordinates (geocaching) and learn to use the interactive tools available on Google Earth to find your treasure! You and your team will create a geo-caching box and post it on the geo-caching website for others to find using the correct coordinates. LEGO Robotics Olympics Engineering and the Olympic spirit come together in this class that will teach you the basics of LEGO robotics. LEGO Robot Challenge WorkshopWork in teams to meet challenges and learn mechanical and software design as you design, build and program a robot to compete against others in multiple challenges on a board similar to First Lego League. Celebrate your engineering skills by building advanced LEGO structures using Mindstorms software and equipment. Previous robot and LEGO experience is helpful! Old Salts and Seadogs: The Pirate’s Guide Institute Ahoy Buccaneers! Come aboard the ship, meet your mates and explore the life of a pirate as you take the Pirate’s Pledge and learn the ways of the sea. From the division of spoils, provision sharing, weaponry, gnarly knot tying and sword fighting essentials, you’ll awaken your pirate imagination and create a story line. The Guide will teach you how to elect a captain, hold pirate court and debate the fate of intruders as you throw the liar’s dice and go on “raids”. Sleuths and Suspects: Crime Scene Investigators InstituteUse your powers of observation, your critical thinking skills and your ability to work on a forensics team to solve multiple mysteries using crime scene investigation principles. You’ll conduct forensic science tests on evidence found at mock crime scenes and perform experiments to narrow down your suspect list. Conduct interviews with suspects while piecing together the events leading up to the crime. This exciting class will take place at one of our region’s most important animal care facilities where you will learn behavior training and the basics of the care and handling of a variety of animals. You may assist the staff in exercising, walking and brushing the dogs one day and you may help in the care and feeding of cats and kittens on another day. Animal specialists and veterinary professionals will visit you to share their expertise as you explore the different professions in animal care and welfare. Participants receive first-class instruction by professional artists in creative writing, theater, or visual arts through intensive hands-on workshops, mentoring, evaluation, and presentation of creative works. ACADEMY 2016A Camp for Talented and Highly Able StudentsSession 1: June 19–25, grades 5 and 6 Session 2: June 19–25, grades 7 and 8ACADEMY offers stimulating academic classes, workshops, cultural experiences, social and recreational activities for talented and highly able students who have completed grades 5 through 8. Students selected for each weeklong residential session live on the Southern Oregon University campus, where they bring their love of learning, humor, and unique talents to a community where intelligence and creativity are valued and supported.Fee: $750 (Junior Counselor $550)

ACADEMIA LATINA 2016A Camp for Latino StudentsJuly 29 – August 6, grades 7-12Academia Latina is designed to inspire Latino students to explore the learning and career opportunities that a university education offers. Academia Latina provides classes, workshops, cultural experiences, and recreational activities for Latino students who have completed grades 7 through 9. Students selected for the weeklong residential camp on the SOU campus interact with other Latino students from southern Oregon while being challenged by creative, bilingual instructors and exciting activities. Fee: $750 (scholarships available) + $100 student activity fee

SEA CAMP OF OREGONA Camp at the Oregon CoastSession 1: August 16-19, ages 10–131:00 pm Tuesday – 6:00 pm FridaySession 2: August 21-24, ages 10-131:00 pm Sunday–6:00 pm WednesdaySEA Camp of Oregon offers a unique, hands-on learning experience at the beautiful coast of Charleston, Oregon. Participants explore tidepools, go crabbing, observe marine wildlife, hike, and get involved in many other activities and field trips. Students live in the dorms at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology and have access to lab facilities for exciting classes and presentations. Location: Depart from parking lot in front of SOU Cox Hall on Frances Lane, Ashland. Fee: $545

The Advanced Southern Credit ProgramThis program is offered during the school year for advanced high school students who earn early college credits from high school teachers who have been approved to teach SOU courses. Tuition for ASC is just $41 per credit or $164 for a 4 credit class. Fall Term registration will be announced in September!

Instructor Profiles

Sherri Beeler has taught English for 25 years, along with Paper/Altered Arts; her published work appears in The Stamper’s Sampler, and Create With Me magazines.

Rick Brown is the Executive Director and Head Coach of the Ashland Rowing Club in Ashland, OR. He was the Executive Director at the Three Rivers Rowing Association in Pittsburgh, PA for 9 years coaching many levels and ages. He also served as a coach with the U.S. Rowing Men’s Junior National Team. He rowed at and attended Bates College, Lewiston, ME and has a Masters in Sport Management from the University of San Francisco.

Samar Dawisha is a mixed media artist, performer and art educator. She has taught art (from painting to sculpture), performance and clay animation in the Rogue valley for over 20 years to children, teens and adults.

Megan Duling is a Dancer and School Administrator at Dancing People Company in Ashland, Oregon. She has trained and performed with American Ballet Theater and Sacramento Ballet. She attended the University of Oregon where she received the Lotta Carl Scholarship and was a member of the U of O Repertory Dance Company.

Chris Duval has taught LEGO Robotics classes for 7 years at Kids Unlimited and for 4 years at SOU Pre-College Youth Programs. He enjoys technology and owns his own business fixing computers. He has been interested in LEGOS and robots since he was old enough to walk.

Judi Hanstein is the Volunteer Coordinator for the Southern Oregon Humane Society. She has helped to facilitate SOU’s Vet Med classes at SOHS for the past 4 years.

Alexandra Harding earned a degree in biology from Western Oregon University. She is a graduate student in the Environmental Education and in the Master’s of Arts in Teaching Programs at Southern Oregon University.

Tyler Hawkins is the head mechanic for the SOU BIKE Program, and is president of the SOU Beekeeping Club. He holds a B.S. with honors in Art from SOU.

Leslie Hunter is the Owner/Operator of the Flying L Ranch. She is a former outfitter and guide with the Oregon State Marine Board. She has three decades of hands-on experience working with horses.

Craig Honeycutt holds a M.A. in Art Education and is a local artist with more than twenty years of teaching experience.

Michel Knowles has a passion for technology and programming and is a recent graduate of SOU with a B.S. in Computer Science/Multimedia. He has been teaching for SOU Youth Programs for 3 years. He holds degrees in the applied sciences from Rogue Community College and the U.S. Airforce.

Sarai Lacy holds a B.A. in Business Administration. She will receive her M.A.T. and her Oregon Preliminary Teaching License with a dual endorsement in business and social science in June 2016.

Holly Mee will receive her M.A.T. degree with an endorsement in English-Language Arts in June 2016. She has been a student teacher at Rogue River High School and South Middle School in Grants Pass, OR.

Emily Miller is an Elementary Education major at SOU with minors in Outdoor Adventure Leadership and Environmental Studies. As part of SOU’s Outdoor Program she has facilitated climbing, hiking and whitewater rafting trips in addition to her work with students at the John Muir Magnet School on outdoor activities.

Marilyn D. Moore is a Le Cordon Bleu Graduate and a Certified Culinary Educator with the American Culinary Federation. She is the owner of Creative Organic Catering and has taught culinary arts classes for SOU Youth Programs for over a decade.

Amanda “Mandy” Noel earned a M.S. in Environmental Education from SOU and is the Youth Education Coordinator for the Siskiyou Field Institute where she organizes and instructs outdoor programs for K-12 students in southern Oregon and northern California.

Jeff Rhoades holds a Master’s in Educational Information and Technology and teaches Media Arts at Phoenix High School.

Steve Roby has been teaching in the Rogue Valley for 9 years and is a teacher with the Logos Public Charter School. He holds a M.A.T. degree and has a passion for working with youth.

Lauran Rose holds a B.A. in Elementary Education and will receive her M.A.T. degree from SOU in June 2016. She has been a student teacher at Hedrick Middle School and at Talent Elementary School.

Christopher Rosetta has been teaching for 22 years and has developed a full computer science program in game and mobile app development as well as advanced programming for School District #7 in Grants Pass, OR.

Dylan Shelton is the local Salle’s leading fencer and long-time Southern Oregon Fencing Center Instructor.

Kelly Sosa is an SOU Outdoor Program instructor, youth tennis camp instructor. She is also certified in Wilderness Remote First Aid/CPR and a service dog trainer /instructor.

Ian Thirkell is an adjunct faculty member in SOU’s Emerging Media and Digital Arts Program. He holds a M.F.A. in Animation from the Savannah College of Art and Design and a B.S. in Studio Art from SOU.

Mary Wilkins-Kelly is an artist who enjoys sharing her love of mixed media and photography with her students. She has 20 years of teaching experience.

Pre-registration accompanied by FULL payment is required for every class, and classes fill on a first-come basis.Refund Policy. We will issue a refund (minus a $25 cancellation fee) if a student withdraws at least two working days prior to the first class meeting.Cancellations. In the event that a class does not receive sufficient registration to meet the enrollment minimum, the class may be cancelled. If a class is cancelled, we will notify registered students and issue a full refund.Tuition Assistance. Students may request tuition assistance for one program per term.
