Yaddo’s mission is to further the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists to work without

interruption in a supportive environment. Chosen on a competitive basis by panels of widely recognized

artists, guests work in both traditional and nontraditional media. They include emerging and well-known

artists, reflecting a broad range of contemporary styles and creative perspectives. They are welcomed to

Yaddo without regard for their financial circumstances.

SINCE OUR FOUNDING,

YADDO HAS WORKED

HARD TO INVIGORATE AND

FINE-TUNE THE FACILITIES

WE OFFER OUR ARTISTS.

3

We begin by taking a moment

to remind ourselves how

very grateful we are for

Yaddo – a place of retreat, creative

inspiration, and refuge in a world that

is so complex. And we are pleased to

report that 2015 was a year of all-

around accomplishment. In our aim to

Preserve the Past and Build a Vibrant

Future, Yaddo continues to make great

strides. The centerpiece of the year

was the completion of five new live/

work studios, which welcomed their first

guests in April.

Our Strategic Plan called on us to

expand the breadth of expertise of our

Members to meet new challenges and

take advantage of new opportunities.

The election of Deborah Berke, Ann

Chen, Willis Goldsmith, and Katherine

Rosman to Membership in 2015 brings

us closer to our goal. As we prepare for

the heavy lift of restoring the Mansion,

Willis’s and Deborah’s expertise in law

and architecture, respectively, will help

to ensure that we follow consistently

high standards. Later this year, Deborah

will take her place as the first-ever

female Dean of the Yale School of

Architecture – we are thrilled for her

and for us. Ann Chen’s combination

of international business experience

and knowledge of contemporary art is

already helping us to build a following

on the West Coast. And we are

fortunate to have the talents of Katie

Rosman, Yaddo author and New York

Times journalist, to help invigorate our

connection to and communications with

our thousands of artist alumni.

Report from the Co-Chairs

Thinking of good governance,

we introduced term limits to our

Membership and Board of Directors to

ensure a vibrancy and depth to Yaddo’s

leadership for generations to come.

As we know, an active and engaged

board is vital to the success of any

organization.

It would be remiss not to note

that Susan Brynteson has retired

from her position as Vice Provost

of Libraries at the University of

Delaware after 30 years. Yaddo’s

guests can still look forward to

seeing Susan every summer in the

beloved Yaddo Authors Library,

cataloguing the books we receive

over the course of the year. And

our guests are now able to read

by the light of reading lamps given

by Susan’s family in honor of her

birthday and 50-year connection

to Yaddo.

In the same vein, the Schapiro Fund

gave Yaddo an inspiring $1 million

gift in honor of our longtime board

member, Linda Collins, who died

in 2014. This gift is exemplary of

Linda’s generosity and commitment

to Yaddo, and highlights the fact

that those who know us best,

support us wholeheartedly. Gifts like

these make Yaddo the unique and

extraordinary place it is.

Yaddo’s endowment continues to be in

good health at $28 million – a strong

achievement for 2015 given the rigors

of the market and the costs of being

in campaign mode – thanks to our

treasurer, Candace Weir.

2015 was overall a strong year for

Yaddo. Much work was done and much

was achieved. The year ended with a

balanced budget, a significant marker

of health as we worked on a capital

campaign. Annual giving was protected

even as we raised just over $5 million

in campaign funding. Both Board and

individual giving to Yaddo was at an

all-time high!

We are most indebted to Yaddo’s hard-

working, dedicated staff. Especially

big kudos go to our president, Elaina

Richardson, who has worked tirelessly

on our behalf.

None of this would be possible without

all of you and your support. As always,

we look forward to hearing your ideas

throughout the year.

2015 was a year of all-around accomplishment.

Yaddo’s founders, Spencer

and Katrina Trask, were great

tinkerers, happy to experiment

and innovate socially, aesthetically and

in business dealings. The buildings and

grounds they left to us illustrate that

aspect of their approach to life: trees

were planted, and if they failed to thrive,

others were put in their place; if Stone

Tower didn’t work as an ice house, well,

how about using it as a family chapel?

That propensity has been much on

my mind as we push forward with our

campaign to Preserve the Past and

Build a Vibrant Future. This year, we

built five new live/work studios (the

first guests moved into these beautiful

spaces just this week) and began to

develop a scope of work for restoration

and stabilization of the Mansion. As the

plans came to fruition, it occurred to me

again and again that the Trasks would

approve. I imagine, in fact, that they’d be

enthralled by it all, happy participants in

the imagining of What’s Next!

Of course, adding a capital campaign

and a building agenda to the ongoing

demands of running one of the nation’s

preeminent residency programs

does not come without various costs,

budgetary, for sure, but also of time

and commitment. Our Board Co-Chairs,

A.M. Homes and Susan Unterberg,

more than rose to the challenge, for

which they have my thanks, as do all

the Members and Directors of the

Corporation of Yaddo for their support,

energy, and trust. When we met at

Yaddo last September for our Annual

Meeting, there was palpable joy at all

we are accomplishing, tempered by

the reality of what still needs to be

done, certainly, but appropriate pride

in the “now.”

The Campaign has raised just over $5

million dollars for the projects identified

in our Facilities Master Plan as Phase

1. That’s a healthy start and should,

I think, give all of us confidence that

momentum is with us as we push

forward. I’m reminded of something

wonderful the Yaddo author and

board member Rick Moody once said:

describing the impact of a residency

at Yaddo, and the roll call of the greats

who have worked in these same

rooms, and walked on the same paths,

he noted that he experienced it as a

“tremendous wind at my back, holding

me up and moving me forward even

on days when writing felt ridiculously

hard.” I, too, feel buoyed by our past,

and carried forward by the vigor of

those who work here, as we take on

President’s Report

the challenges of this pivotal moment

in our storied history.

With so much of a focus on the macro,

it was important that the micro not be

ignored, and it was not. We protected

annual giving as we raised campaign

funds. Our endowment, always a

benchmark of our fiscal health, fared as

well as we could hope in a challenging

market climate; at the beginning of the

year it stood at $30 million, and was at

just under $28 million at year’s end. I’m

grateful to Candace Weir for her smart

and dynamic chairing of our Finance

and Audit Committee and to Patricia

Sopp, Yaddo’s stellar Vice President for

Finance. We also paid close attention

to our governance practices, as Susan

and A.M have noted in their Report. We

modified our bylaws to enact term limits

and developed an orientation program

for new Members.

Of course, buildings are at heart no

more than a way for us to actualize our

mission, that simple promise to offer

good working conditions to artists at no

cost to them. And on the program side,

Yaddo did shine in 2015. We welcomed

207guest artists. They came to Yaddo

from 30 states and the District of

Columbia, in addition to several foreign

countries, including the Netherlands,

Nigeria, New Zealand, and South

Korea. We received a total of 1,653

applications from choreographers,

composers, filmmakers, painters,

performance artists, photographers,

printmakers, sculptors, video artists,

and writers, working both alone and

collaboratively in teams of up to three.

Almost sixty percent were guests at

Yaddo for the first time, and the artists

ranged in age from their early 20s to

their late 80s.

Under the shrewd guidance of our

Admissions Committee and in important

partnership with the Hearst Foundation,

we also renewed our commitment to

outreach to guarantee the vitality of our

admissions process. These efforts paid

off handsomely in a lively and talented

group of artists in residence throughout

the year. Our five admissions panels

once again did an outstanding job

reviewing applicants, and I am indebted

to the chair of each and to the artists

who generously agreed to help us with

this essential task. Despite a noticeable

spike in applications and the gradual

increase in guests over the decades, we

are still, as the Trasks mandated, “few in

number,” and the Yaddo magic continues

to have a transforming impact, as

was evident from the large number of

artists who last year testified in letters,

dedications, and interviews to the

staggering impact that time at Yaddo

had on their output and creativity.

As always, I thank my talented and

hardworking colleagues for all they did

to make 2015 so productive: I learned a

lot from each of them as we collectively

shaped goals and, more importantly,

a shared vision of how to get there.

As anyone who has ever led an

organization knows, success demands

colleagues who are confident and

committed enough to create this kind of

alignment — otherwise decision fatigue

sets in. I also salute our generous

community of supporters for once more

promoting a deeper understanding of

the value of solitude and community, of

time and space, and — most important

of all—the value of supporting the work

of individual artists if we are to have a

vibrant and engaged cultural life.

Elaina Richardson,

President

Of course, buildings are at heart no more than a way for us to actualize our mission.

Yaddo Guests 2015

Yaddo’s 207 artist guests in 2015 included a journalist writing a family memoir of the

Soviet Union; a visual artist producing a mixed media work on climate change; and a

television screenwriter and director. With funding from the National Endowment for

the Arts, we supported five collaborative teams working across disciplines. Yaddo

is selective but egalitarian, proud of the fact that a majority of our artists are first-time guests

who bring vigor and a fresh perspective to our program. The artwork in these pages is by some

of our talented first-time guests in the visual arts.

Guests at our 2015 Summer

Benefit were entertained by Yaddo

composer and singer-songwriter

Gabriel Kahane, who performed

songs from The Ambassador,

hailed by Rolling Stone as one of

2014’s “very best albums.”

The sold-out event was a huge

success, raising $146,632.

Thanks to the generosity of the

Capital Region community and the

hard work of the members of the

volunteer committees, Yaddo was

able to devote more than ninety

percent of the proceeds directly to

the artist residency program.

We strengthened our community ties in several ways this past year, launching speaker series in both Saratoga Springs and Washington, DC. The

partnerships – with Northshire Bookstore and NYU DC, respectively – are designed to expand access to our artists and their ideas while staying true to our mission of retreat. In Saratoga, Will Hermes, senior critic at Rolling Stone, talked with journalist Thomas Dimopoulos about his life in music writing and his research for a biography of Lou Reed, while in Washington, internationally acclaimed writer Andrew Solomon gave a preview of his 2016 book Far and Away: Reporting from the Brink of Change: Seven Continents, Twenty-Five Years, in conversation with Yaddo president Elaina Richardson. We also established a stronger presence on the West Coast, anchored by supporters

and alumni in San Francisco. In October, friends of Yaddo attended the West Coast premiere of Board Member Ayad Akhtar’s Disgraced – the most-produced play of 2015 – and met the playwright. The evening was hosted by fellow board member Ann Chen.

At the same time as we were building new facilities for our 21st-century artists, we were

acting as stewards of our historic buildings. In late August, we reinstalled a magnificent stained glass window in the foyer of the Mansion that had been taken to New York for cleaning and repair. Elected officials and supporters were on hand to celebrate our accomplishment, which also kicked off what will be a multiyear undertaking to preserve the Mansion for future generations of artists and for the public who come to Yaddo to enjoy our beautiful gardens.

It’s rare not to see the name of a Yaddo artist – or two – when prestigious national awards are announced. Among the awards our artists took home in 2015 were Emmys (Matthew Weiner and Lisa Cholodenko), a Rome Prize (Lysley Tenorio), a Whiting

(Anne Washburn), and a Pulitzer (Sheri Fink). And Bloomberg Philanthropies gave one of only four Public Art Challenge grants to a team headed by 2015 Yaddo artist Adam Frelin to mount Breathing Lights, a light art installation in unoccupied buildings in Albany, Schenectady, and Troy.

We owe a tremendous debt of

gratitude to everyone who

gave in 2015 and made it

one of the most successful years for

fundraising in Yaddo’s history. As always,

we start with our Board of Directors and

Members of the Corporation, whose

generosity to the annual fund made

it possible for us to exceed our goal

for the second year in a row. Equally

important, our artists, from recent

guests to artists who had residencies

in the 1970s, continue to show their

appreciation for the gift of retreat. It was

especially exciting to see artists rally

around a Giving Tuesday campaign on

December 1.

Private individuals from the local

Saratoga Springs community, across

the country, and around the world,

are also among our supporters, along

with foundations, corporations, and

government agencies. Appreciating

Yaddo’s unique role in the production of

a wide range of contemporary art, they

join with us as investors in the creative

process.

Benefits in New York City and

Saratoga Springs once again played

a key role in generating support

and visibility for Yaddo, with record-

breaking revenues for both events,

and strong leadership from our chairs

and organizing committees. The Yaddo

Garden Association’s more than seventy

volunteers were similarly active, carrying

out fundraising, tours, and the ongoing

maintenance of our beautiful rock and

rose gardens.

This strong base of annual support for

the residency program is all the more

impressive given our progress with

a capital campaign, quietly launched

in 2014, designed to preserve our

past and ensure a dynamic future.

We secured over $3.3 million in

contributions and pledges in 2015,

bringing our campaign total to $5

million. Among the highlights were

a $1 million gift from the Morris and

Alma Schapiro Fund to help underwrite

restoration of our historic mansion

and endow a residency in memory of

our much-loved board member Linda

Collins, and a gift from the Helen

Frankenthaler Foundation to fund one

of our five new live/work studios. The

studio is named for Frankenthaler, who

visited Yaddo on several occasions and

served on our board, and is designated

for use by a visual artist.

It is a tremendous pleasure for all of

us at Yaddo to salute the individuals,

institutions, and public agencies that

made gifts and pledges in 2015 to the

annual fund and capital campaign.

The Trask SocietyP l a n n e d G i v i n g t o S u s t a i n Y a d d o

Named for our visionary founders, the Trask Society is our planned

giving program. One of the many people who have supported

Yaddo’s mission in this way is the late Rosette Lamont, esteemed

theatre critic, author, and professor, who had several residencies in the

1960s and made provisions for Yaddo in her will. We received a final

payment from her estate in 2015, with the funds used to build Yaddo’s

endowment. We gratefully acknowledge the many individuals who have

thoughtfully and generously taken Yaddo into consideration in their

financial planning. Options they have chosen include a bequest, charitable

remainder trust or a gift of tangible or real property, or naming Yaddo as a

beneficiary in their retirement plan or insurance policy.

Yaddo works with donors and their representatives to structure individual planned gifts

that can offer substantial tax and estate benefits, particularly if funded through gifts of

appreciated stock or real estate. There is no minimum bequest required. Restricted gifts

can memorialize relatives or friends, or perpetuate donors’ names by endowing artists’

residencies and restoration of the historic estate. Finally, many former guests have

designated works of art as a gift, with specific arrangements made for their care and

eventual disposition. Additional information can be found online at www.yaddo.org/yaddo/

trasksociety.shtml or by contacting Steve Dennin, Director of Development at 212-307-

7685 or [email protected].
