If you haven’t been to Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson, you don’t know what you’re missing. The combination aquarium and fish hatchery has something for everyone, from tiny infants to their grandparents, to enjoy. Besides the fact that you will be hard pressed to find a better exhibit of Texas marine life, the price, which is free, can’t be beat.

Sea Center Texas was established through a partnership with Texas Parks & Wildlife, the Dow Chemical Company, the Coastal Conservation Association, and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service Sportfish Restoration program.

The most popular exhibit at Sea Center is the

“touch” tank. It displays several types of Texas marine life including anemones, hermit crabs, and sea snails. Visitors can have an up-close encounter while volunteers answer questions and reveal fascinating facts about the animals in the exhibit.

The second most popular attraction is the 50,000 gallon aquarium with Texas-size fish. The fish that call the Gulf of Mexico tank home include a six-foot long state record Green moray eel, Crevalle

jack, Redfish, Atlantic spadefish, gray snapper, and red snapper. At 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays, the aquarium fish and visitors both get treated as the fish get fed and visitors get to

view the feeding frenzy. In addition to the Gulf exhibit, there are several

other aquariums that each houses their own unique underwater marvels. From the frisky diamondback turtles that swim up to greet you to the slow moving and lackadaisical snook hanging by a jetty rock to the inquisitive porcupine puffer in the artificial reef, visitors will be able to discover the many different faces of Texas coastal environments.

The site is also a popular destination for schools, scouts and groups. There are a variety of education programs including hatchery tours, wetland tours and other programs that Sea Center offers. The facility depends on a limited number of volunteers to conduct tours and programs so call in advance for reservations.

During the hatchery tours, participants are led through one of the largest red fish hatcheries in the world. Visitors will be astonished when they see the huge 20-30 pound fish that produce millions of red drum and spotted sea trout hatchlings that are so tiny you almost need a microscope to view them. The hatchlings are transferred to ponds where they are able to grow in a protected environment before they are transferred to the bays along the Texas coast. Hatchery tours, which last about 45 minutes, are scheduled Tuesdays through Saturdays as space and volunteer guides are available.

In addition to guided hatchery tours, the site offers self-guided tours of the wetland exhibits and a variety of special events and fishing programs. Admission is free but donations are appreciated.

BIRDING IN BRAZOSPORTThe Brazosport

Area has an abundance of quality locations where anyone can go birding.

Brazosport lies in the Central Flyway so it includes birds that migrate across the Gulf of Mexico and the coastal migrants that fly around the western edge of the gulf. This, combined with varied habitats and a mild climate provide excellent birding year round with the best times being spring and winter. This area sits on a coastal plain characterized by prairies, riparian hardwood forests, and an abundance of marshes, lakes, bays and the Gulf shoreline. Texas is the top birding state in the US with more

species documented than any other and Brazoria County, where the Brazosport Area is located, is among the counties with the highest species counts in the state. Over 320 species of birds are common in proper habitat and season. And there are at least 100 more that are rarer and not so readily located.

Opportunities abound for getting out and seeing birds in this area. The Brazoria and the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuges both have excellent driving loops, many wooded trails and wetlands that are ideal for birding. The Gulf Coast Bird Observatory (GCBO) has trails, an observation tower, a wetland area and

several gardens landscaped for birds. The Quintana Neotropic Bird Sanctuary is another great option. It is open year around but spring and fall are the best times to see birds there. During the month of April, the GCBO runs a host station at Quintana and leads bird walks once or twice a day.

The Brazosport Area has numerous sites on the Upper Texas Coast portion of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail (GTCBT). Each location has a brown GTCBT sign along with a site number that corresponds with the GTCBT map to aid birders. Maps are available at the Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce. The Brazosport Birders, a local birding organization, produce a checklist that includes locations on a map, driving directions, most common types of birds seen, and facilities available. This checklist is available at the GCBO and the Quintana Neotropic Bird Sanctuary.

This is the gulf coast so when venturing out on a birding expedition, be prepared by taking lots of drinking water and always include sunscreen and insect repellent in your gear.

FISHING THE GULF COASTThe Brazosport

area has a number of fishing opportunities for the casual sportsman or the avid angler. The unique location of this area makes different types of fishing possible with relatively easy access.

The easiest and most convenient fishing in this area consists of fishing from the bank or a small boat in one of several inshore estuaries. These estuaries include Christmas Bay, the Old Brazos River, the New Brazos River, the Intracoastal Waterway, Surfside and Quintana Beach, and the Surfside Jetties to name a few. Some common inshore

species available in the Brazosport area are red drum, spotted sea trout, flounder, black drum, croaker, gafftopsail catfish, and whiting. Shrimp, mullet, squid and other bait can be easily purchased either live or dead from one of the numerous local bait camps.

Another fishing opportunity that is extremely popular in

this area occurs in the Gulf of Mexico. Freeport is in a prime location along the Texas Coast. The relative close proximity to deeper water as well as near shore fishing make Freeport the best choice for deep sea fishing in the state. There are

Deep water species available offshore include red snapper (when in season), grouper, king mackerel, amberjack, dolphin, wahoo, tuna, cobia (ling), as well as many others. Live baits like ballyhoo, cigar minnows, squid, Boston mackerel, and Spanish sardines are best used on these fish. The fishing regulations and seasons for offshore fish are constantly changing, so make sure that your guide/captain has the latest set of federal regulations.

Fishing in state waters is one more option for the offshore fisherman. You must be within 9 nautical miles of the closest point on land to be considered in state waters. Red snapper, cobia, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, certain shark species, red drum, and even tarpon can be taken in this area with summer and early fall being the most productive. State law requires that

all fishermen have a Texas fishing license and a saltwater stamp whether they are fishing in federal or state waters. Fishing tackle for all of the above types of fishing can be purchased from either sporting goods stores, convenience stores near the beach, or any of the bait shops in the Area.

For the weekend fishermen or the serious angler, the Brazosport area has fishing opportunities for everyone. So if you have lived in the area all of your life or are just visiting, taking advantage of a chance to go fishing will likely pay off.

Drift lazily in the vast aquariums that include the Gulf of Mexico, Salt Marsh, Coastal Bay, Jetty and Artificial Reefs. Visit the 20-foot touch pool and handle marine animals such as blue crabs, hermit crabs, urchins and anemones. Or come face to face with one of the large fish in the Gulf of Mexico aquarium. Tour one of the largest red drum hatcheries in the world and marvel at the replicas of Texas state record saltwater fish.

Sea Center Texas is located at 302 Medical Drive in Lake Jackson. There is no admission fee and Sea Center is closed on Mondays.

The Center is a cultural and educational complex that features an art gallery, a science museum, a planetarium and two performance theaters. The art gallery exhibits work by international, regional and local artists. The Center is home to the longest running community theater on the Texas Gulf Coast and offers five major productions each season performing in either the arena or proscenium theater. The museum contains the largest seashell collection in the South along with fossils, including dinosaur and mammoth bones. Other exhibits feature Texas coastal wildlife and a unique jade and ivory collection. The planetarium has shows every Tuesday. Visitors can also view images from the Hubble telescope in the lobby through View-Space. 400 College Blvd, Clute.

good fishing, the Brazosport Area is teeming with diverse fishing. Bryan Beach, Quintana Beach, and Surfside Beach are ideal for surf fishing. There are dozens of boat ramps, marinas, and bait and tackle shops in the area, making it a boat owner’s paradise. Cast a line from the abundant and easily accessible jetties, piers or banks. For others, the deep Gulf is easily accessible from the many charter boats of all sizes that make their headquarters in Freeport and surrounding areas.

Miles of sandy beach teamed with interesting seashells and marine life make this a perfect retreat for recreational sports, sun worshipers and nature lovers alike. The Brazosport Area offers countless possibilities for paddling adventures of all types. Whether you are new to kayaking or have been canoeing for years there is fun to be had in the many waterways that snake through this area. The Christmas Bay Paddling Trail has launch points at San Luis Pass County Park and along Bluewater Highway in Surfside. The Stephen F. Austin Paddling Trail winds through one of the most incredible ecological systems; two launch points are at the Wilderness Park in Lake Jackson and at the Freeport Municipal Park in Freeport. Paddle down Oyster Creek from the launch point at Dunbar Park in Lake Jackson. Stephen F. Austin, the “Father of Texas,” was originally buried at this pioneer cemetery in Jones Creek. The cemetery was part of the Peach Point Plantation, which Austin considered to be his only home in Texas. The Plantation was the home of Austin’s sister, Emily Austin Bryan Perry. Campers can choose from full service paved RV sites or self-contained cabins. The pedestrian beach, lighted fishing pier, and access to the west jetty are the most popular attractions at the park. Other amenities include restrooms and showers, a meeting/party house complete with kitchen, an education center, covered pavilions, picnic tables, grills, playground, volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and paved trail. 330 5th St., Quintana Beach.

This research and education facility coordinates data on migrating and resident avifauna. The observatory sits on 34 acres of Columbia Bottomland forest and has a great bird-banding program the third Saturday of each month. Native woodland birds and migrants can be found on the many trails at the GCBO and around the Avian Conservation Science Center. Make sure to visit in September for the Xtreme Hummingbird Xtravaganza where you will see thumb-sized hummers dart in and out of nectar producing flowers and feeders. A self-guided auto tour, boardwalks, observation decks with interpretative signs and a discovery center make this a favorite among birders and naturalists alike. Brazosport is where Texas history began. It is where the group known as Stephen F. Austin’s “Old 300” first stepped off the schooner “Lively,” near the mouth of the Brazos River in 1821. Their hardships and sacrifices were rewarded with the signing of the Treaties of Velasco, which gave Texas its independence from Mexico. The museum has an extensive Austin Colony exhibit and chronicles the events leading to freedom from Mexico.
