2004 Season Preview

The 2004 Cortland Men’s Soccer Guide was written and editedby Associate SID Dan Surdam. Season preview written byassistant coach Aaron Landers. Action photography by Darl ZehrPhotography. The guide was printed by Graphics Plus Printing ofCortland.

On the cover: Senior Chad Becker scored four game-winninggoals last season.

The end of an era of sorts has occurred for the SUNYCortland men’s soccer program as Mike Middleton, headcoach for four seasons and the man responsible for the RedDragons’ resurgence as a national power, stepped down thispassed summer.

Taking over the reigns is Dwight Hornibrook, who brings awealth of playing and coaching experience ranging from thecollegiate to the international level. He inherits a squadloaded with talent and potential. Hornibrook’s knowledge, combined with a number of skilled veterans and a solidrecruiting class, has the Red Dragons poised for great thingsin 2004.

The Red Dragons have tremendous strength and depth inthe goalkeeper position. Juniors Ross Morelli and Sean Traskplayed almost equal minutes last season and will challengeeach other for the starting job again this year. Trask went 8-2while playing the majority of the second half of last season,

earning six shutouts and a0.41 GAA that rankedeighth nationally inDivision III. Morelli, whoposted an 8-3-2 recordwith a 1.22 GAA and threeshutouts, should benefitfrom a summer of PDL ballwith the Palm BeachPumas.

Cortland’s goalkeeperswill rely heavily on the playof senior Zak Tonovitz, theonly returning starter on adefense that allowed just19 goals in 23 games lastyear. Tonovitz started 20games for the RedDragons in 2003 and looksto cap off a fine career byhelping ensure thatCortland is again one ofthe stingiest teamsdefensively in theSUNYAC. Transfer Collyn

Hoyte and returning sophomore Casey Becker should alsohelp to solidify things in the back. Hoyte, a natural forwardwho converted to sweeper in his final season at JamestownCommunity College, will rely on his crafty skills and hisuncanny ball-winning ability to help ease opposing pressure.Becker, who appeared in 11 games with one start last year, made tremendous strides in the off season and should proveto be a solid defender with the speed to run down anyopponent who breaches the back line. Other players who willcompete for playing time in the back are transfer Bill Buithand freshmen Charlie Dickinson, Eddie Dolenk, MattMankowski and Steve Weeks.

The Red Dragons boast a great mix of skill, speed, muscleand leadership in the midfield, providing Coach Hornibrookwith plenty of game-time options. Notable returnees arejunior Matt Shea and senior Steve Castro. Shea should be theanchor that holds things together. Combining excellentdistribution, keen field awareness and great leadership skills,he has the ability to make valuable contributions at both endsof the field. Castro, a smooth and crafty playmaker, will viefor time in the central midfield with transfer Haris Babic.Babic, who did not play collegiate ball last year, possesses the

skills and quickness requiredto be an effective attackingmidfielder. On the flanks, sophomores Jordan Berg andCody Healey will provide evenmore strength to an alreadypotent midfield. NewcomersTyler Engelhard, EricReinhardt and Ryan Skibinskiwill provide additional depth.

Cortland has become oneof the most dangerousoffensive teams in theSUNYAC in recent years andlooks to continue that trendthis season. Seniors MattDaum and Chad Becker willgive opponents all they canhandle. Daum was second onthe team in scoring last year(6 goals, 7 assists, 19 points)despite only starting sixgames. Increased confidenceand another year ofexperience should see himputting marks on the scoresheet on a consistent basis.Becker looks to continue the

form that earned him the second-most goals (7) and third-most points (18) on last year’s squad. Sophomores BrentSmith, George Morningstar and freshman Sean Malone willalso see time up top for the Red Dragons.

This year’s team haspotentially one of thetoughest schedules in thecountry. In addition to stiffcompetition in theSUNYAC, the squad willhead to Virginia Wesleyanfor the Blue Marlin Classicand will take on Ithaca andStevens Tech (NJ) in theannual Red Dragon Classic.Additionally, games againstnational-powerhouse St.Lawrence, Clarkson, St.John Fisher, Keuka,Scranton and Wilkesshould have the 2004 RedDragons ready for anotherrun in the postseason.

Junior midfielder Matt Sheahas been selected as a teamcaptain for the 2004 season.

Senior midfielder SteveCastro, one of four captainsthis season, has played in53 games in his Red Dragoncareer.

Senior left defender ZakTonovitz has started 31 of the59 games he’s played duringhis Cortland career.
