How computers are changing the way we resolve our problems

Computers and technology in general are quite predominant in today’s world.

As you can see, computers are present in many places and can be used in order to expedite and enhance a huge variety of tasks that human beings find themselves performing. Before them, these tasks could take huge chunks of time, resources or quality of life.

So, let’s take a moment to look at some of the most mesmerizing ways that we are using, or have used, computers in order to solve problems that would otherwise be almost impossible to do.

• Folding@Home: this is a distributed computing project for disease research run by Stanford University in the United States. Distributed computing is simply a network of computers communicated with each other by passing messages. The Folding@home initiative uses the processing power of computers provided by volunteers in order to simulate protein folding, which allows scientists to examine the whole process and try to determine the causes of protein mis-folding. This mis-folding can lead to many deadly diseases, which is why knowing its causes and possible solutions could be revolutionary. Normally, this process would take an incredibly long amount of time, so the fact that a distributed network allows up to 100 PetaFLOPS of processing power to be dedicated to it has made a huge difference. The best part of it all is that anyone with a computer (yes, PS3s and some smartphones, which just goes to show that they are indeed computers) can contribute to this project, lending their idle processing power to a great cause.

• Einstein@home. Another distributed computing initiative, Einstein@home aims to examine data from the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) experiment in order to determine or measure the presence of gravitational wave sources. The implications of the existence of gravitational waves (which, on February 2016 were observed for the first time) on modern astrophysics as we know them are perhaps too complicated to give an accurate summary in just a few lines, but rest assured that they are huge. • Aside from these scientific research problems that are being solved or researched with enormous help from computers, they have also had an impact in the daily lives of individuals in one very big way: information.Just a moment ago we told you to look up gravitational waves, and any person, no matter their background, can jump on the internet and find thousands upon thousands of articles and media on the subject. The amount of information and knowledge that any person with access to the worldwide web is truly staggering. And it is only growing exponentially as each year passes.
