DESCRIPTION
Hanadu presentation to techUK about HAN connectivity between Smart Meters and the In-Home Displays. techUK hosted a meeting to update the industry on the mainstream solution and the options for connecting the substantial minority (30%) of homes where the mainstream solution cannot connect. Hanadu's solution integrates closely with ZigBee - check out hanadu.org for more information.

Meter-to-Display connection is ZigBee by default
Results from trials: Doesn’t connect in 30% of UK homes
5%: MTUs (aka “blocks of flats”) – Radio is impractical
25%: Homes where a meter is too far (too many walls) from the display
Solutions
Sub-GHz ZigBee PHY: Likely to resolve a large chunk of the 25%
Non-radio (eg PLC): Addresses MTUs plus a large chunk of the 25%
Non-radio solutions must be easily (fully) compatible with ZigBee
Hybrid networks (radio/non-radio) must be easy to deploy and manage
Hanadu has been designed to interoperate totally with ZigBee 1.X
