You Me At Six

You Me At Six are a rock alterative brand and present themselves in that way by:• Wearing black • Leather jackets• Having dismissive body

language (looking away)

Their image connotes a rocky and rebellious attitude, their matching appearance also presents them as agang as they are all wearing black jackets and jeans. This also creates a band identity as they all have a similar look.

Album artwork You Me At Six has linked their appearance with their some of their album work, with the dark colours that has created a noticeable brand identity.

However some of their album work is unconventionally colourful with a lack of darkness that is portrayed through their outfit and despite the alternative rock nature of the band.

Conventional VS unconventional The visual for You Me At Six’s album “Sinners

Never Sleep” cover is a criminal concept, as the person on the cover is having a mug shot taken.

This is stereotypical for an alternative rock band and will attract their target audience of people who enjoy their type of rock music as it gives the impression that the music on this album is quite dark and has serious tone undertones.

The album artwork reflects what the music on the cd will sound like. Also the dark colour scheme of the cover matches their appearance and band identity.

Conventional:

Shots from “Bite My Tongue”, which is a music video of their album, matches cover with dark theme and somewhat rebellious approach.

Unconventional: The visual for this album “Hold me down”

connotes creativity and portrays the music on the album to be like it, this is done through the choice of colours and images.

The appearance of this album is a big contrast to “Sinners Never Sleep” as it implies a totally different message through it’s bright colours.

This album breaks the stereotype of alterative rock as a genre as the average cover usually has darker colours, like “Sinners Never Sleep ”.

This album cover adopts a totally different house style and colour scheme to the conventional album cover, along with the song’s artwork.

Conventional VS unconventional

This is the artwork for the three singles of their album. Each of them have the same colour scheme of cream, pink and grey. These are non-stereotypical colours because of what they connote, for example pink connotes love and romance, which is far from what “Sinners Never Sleep” connoted.

In conclusion the two albums show that an artist or band doesn’t have to be labelled with an “identity” though colours and images. However this change in colour and theme might just be because of their alternative nature which doesn’t limit them as much as other artist with their design choices.
