How to search for classes using WebAdvisor
Introduction
Welcome to Gateway Technical College. Getting started can seem confusing at times. In this tutorial, you will learn how to search for classes using Gateway’s WebAdvisor and to use the tools it provides to filter your class selections to start getting your schedule ready for the new school year.
Background The WebAdvisor can tell you when classes are available, if there are still openings, and find course numbers for you with practically just the click of a mouse. Many features will help you filter class selections based on your needs. Just follow this systematic tutorial and you will be well on your way to getting your class schedule started.
Things you will need before starting your search
• A computer with internet access • The Professional Communications course requirements sheet
NOTE: If you do not already have the course, requirements follow the steps on pages two and three of this tutorial. If you already have a copy of the professional communications course requirements, you may skip to page four.

First, you will need to get your Professional Communications course requirements. Your course requirements are available by following the next steps at www.gtc.edu.
Finding your course requirements list
First, open the PROGRAMS OF STUDY tab and select ASSOCIATE DEGREES.
Now scroll down until you see Professional Communications then select it.

You should now be on the following web page. To open a copy of the course requirements for the Professional Communications Program, just click the link as shown below.
Here you can click on the link to save a copy of the course requirements for the Professional Communications Program.
After clicking on the link above you will be able to view and save a copy of the following PDF.
Click here to save a copy of the course requirements PDF on your computer for later reference. You will need the course numbers on this sheet for later steps in this tutorial.

Once you have a copy of the course requirements, you can move on to the following systematic instructions to walk you through the process of searching for classes on Gateway’s WebAdvisor.

Explanations of the search for sections Filters
A. This drop down arrow filters your class search by semester.
B. This drop down arrow allows you to view all classes or to view only classes with openings available.
C. In this box, you can search for classes by typing a keyword or part of a word like: Psychology or Psych.
D. This drop down arrow allows you to search for classes by department like accounting or welding.
E. If you already know what your course number is, you may enter it here to search for availability.
F. Check the box(s) to select the day(s) you would prefer to take your class and see if they are available on those days.
G. Use this drop down arrow to see if your classes are available at the campus where you prefer.
H. Now, when you click SUBMIT the search results shown are based on the filters you have selected.

Filtering Search by Semester
Once you have become familiar with the options outlined on page ten, you can complete the following steps to search for classes in the Professional Communications program.
We will be looking for classes that will be available in the spring 2015 semester.

Open the drop down tab to view the semester options.

Referring back to the course requirements document saved earlier; enter the class number for the Computers for Professionals class. As you can see above 103-143 typed into the course number box.

Check the boxes to select the days you would prefer to take the course. I have selected Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday as shown above.

Filtering with Campus Selection
Step 13
Open the Location drop down tab and select the campus you wish to take the course at. I have selected the Elkhorn Campus.

Click the SUBMIT button to view the courses that are available based on the filters we have selected in the previous steps.

Understanding Section the Selection Results Page
If all has gone well with the previous steps, you will see a list entitled “Section Selection Results” that looks like the one below.
Your list may be different depending on the filters you have selected. Please familiarize yourself with the items labeled in the Section Selection Results screen below and be sure to write down any information you may need. Once you click the OK button at the bottom of the screen, you will return to the Search for Sections screen and you will have to start all over.
This column displays a list of complete course numbers.
This column displays what day the courses are.
This column displays the start and end dates of the course.
This column displays the cost to take the course.
NOTE: This cost does not include the cost of books or other supplies.
This column displays how many seats are available in the course.
This column displays the start and end time of the course.
This column displays the name of the course instructor and has a link to view the book used in the course.

Now that you understand how to effectively filter and search for classes in the Professional Communications program using WebAdvisor, the next steps are to:
Make a list of the classes you have decided to take.
Double-check the times and days to be certain there are no schedule conflicts.
Register for classes.
Note: If this is the first time, you are registering for classes you must register in person at one of the following campus locations. Click on addresses to open Google Map Link.
