WHY HIRE a DESIGNER Questions YOU may have about the Interior Design Industry.

NEW from our SUPPLIERS Where to find the best deals. What’s new ? A few of our favorite things…

In 2008 an extension was added to this small country home thus allowing to redesign the main floor with a larger master-suite, housing a separate vanity, and a bathroom filled with technology, elegance and luxury. Although the existing space was acceptable, it did not reflect the charismatic characters of the clients, and lacked breathing space. By borrowing the ineffective space from the existing “entrance court” and removing all closets thus permitting for a private space to accommodate a large vanity with Jack and Jill sinks, a separate bathroom area housing a deep sculptural tub with air massage and hydrotherapy combination, set in a perfect symmetrical fashion to allow the beautiful views of the outdoor landscape, a thin 30” LCD TV, and incorporating a large niche wall for artful accessories and spa products, as well as a private entrance to the large well organized dressing room with a make-up counter. A peaceful, elegant yet highly functional en-suite was created by their dream of having a contemporary hotel chic palette inspired by their travels in Paris. Using the classic black and white color combination, a touch of glam, the warm natural color of cherry wood and the technology and innovation brought this retreat to a new level of relaxation.

Doing it right the first time

“....the designer must be able to see - make a concentrated effort to absorb the essence of the project. Seeing is a very difficult thing to do. Most people "look" at a lot of thing but never "see" anything. Looking is emotional; seeing is an intellectual process.” ~ Albert Hadley, The Story of America's Preeminent Interior Designer

Dear TOC..TOC, My basement is dark and dingy, I feel like I am living in a dungeon. The only natural light I have is a small window, and my existing recessed lighting gives off a very yellowish lighting, How can I make my space look brighter and lighter . - living in the dark

BEHIND THE SCENES

Our TIP of the month It’s spring cleaning time. Get rid of the winter blues, this is the time to revive our senses. I have Two words, "Lighten up!" That means colors, fabrics, and flow. Everything should be clean and refreshing, light and tranquil. Choose sheer fabrics, linens, and open weave textiles. Move from ceramic to crystal and glass, either contemporary or traditional. And, "nothing says Spring more than fresh flowers. Make sure to be consistent with creating arrangements. Choose a color scheme, like all white, instead of mixing bouquets, use the same type flower in one glass container with a beautiful white satin or grosgrain ribbon wrapped around it." Use colorful patterned pillows on a "neutral chenille or canvas couch." Get rid of the fussy beads and fringe. "Let color and pattern do the talking... a crazy hot pink, magenta, marigold and cobalt madras plaid.... a chartreuse, plum and teal floral. These bold ingredients distract the eye." And Revive a boring old sofa.

Why hire a Designer Questions YOU may have about the Interior Design Industry

THIS MONTHS QUESTION:

What is the difference between an Interior Designer and an Interior Decorator ?

You’re ready to personalize your home and you want to hire the right professional to work with you. You worked hard to earn the luxury and privilege of personalized service and you want to hire a trusted advisor who really cares about creating your signature and not theirs. But what is the difference between an Interior designer and an Interior Decorator? An interior designer has completed education through an accredited college or university A professional interior designer has training in building and construction materials and specifications.

Their knowledge of electrical, plumbing, framing, construction material, scheduling, millwork can help you re-engineer poorly functioning or dated spaces.

Some designers also have specialized training in kitchen, bath and are part of the NKBA A decorator generally does not provide construction design . Some decorators specialize in window treatment design. interior designers may be a member of a professional organization. (IDC, IIDA, or ARIDO)
