Sorja utilizes the premium spot of TUT campus main lawn for combined teaching and housing. Housing is located in two towers and studying and other supporting spaces in floors below ground level. Most of building mass is covered with green roof to preserve the lawn like athmosphere and function-ality before construction. Inner yard is filled with greenery to create a comfortable environment for hybrid living and learning.

SustainabilityMass for sunlight control, optimized solar panel location, flexible spaces for sustainability

Building mass allows maximum sunlight into all spaces without direct sunlight warming up or creating glare. Tower main win-dos open to east and west and are shielded from light coming from south. Underground facilities have glass walls that open mainly towards north.

Both tower roofs are fitted with solar panels are that yawn at 45 degree angle for optimized solar panel functionality in northern climate.

To make sure that this building is used as long as possible, all the spaces are designed to be flexible and re-organized. This al-lows the building to stand time, wich makes a great impact into ecology when new buildings are not needed as demands change over decades.

SymbolismPinus sylvestris as the new “obelisk”.

Between the two towers is a pine tree (pinus sylvestris) whose cul-tivation into 600 year old behemot functions as a symbolic gesture for longevity, sturdiness and determination. With good nurturing and cultivation both building, pine and students will grow strong and flourish. This new symbol substitutes the obelisk. A greener and more sustainable paradigm replaces old “technology trumps all” thinking.

CityscapeActivating and restoring space and creating a landmark.

Two towers create a distinct landmark that is seen when aproaching campus area. Furthermore the vast emptines of the lawn is activated by introducing variation and points of interest. Existing pathways for walking and biking are emphasised and strenghtened. Kampusa-reena is retained as a central node and all commercial and business activity is situated there, except for a restaurant and a cafe.

Structural principles & MaterialsLong lasting and environmentally viable solutions.

Underground parts are made with concrete pillars and in-citu slabs. Towers are made with steel frames and prefabricated slab elements. Outer shell is made of thermal steel studs with white fiber rein-forced concrete panels. Triple glazed low-E windows are used all about the building.

Student housing is located in two towers. All apart-ments face east or west and are shaded from direct sunlight during mid-day. This decreases cooling load in summer and eliminates clare from sun.

Every floor has shared working space that is free to use by all dwellers. Interaction between inhabitants is also encouraged with a generous south facing shared bal-cony.

Studio apartment sizes vary from small 21,5 m2 studio to large 36 m2 with its own balcony to accomodate both low and high income students. Larger studios can also be shared by two to allow even cheaper living.

Eastern side of both towers is dedicated to flexible apartment unit, wich can be remodeled with moder-ate expences in response to changes in demand. The unit consists of backwall that houses all plumming and ventilation, a section for wet installations and a section for living and bedrooms. The flexi unit can be modified to house any combination of apartments from follow-ing: 21,5 m2 Studio, 45 m2 Couples apartment with 1 Bedroom, 67 m2 Family apartment with 2 bedrooms, 90 m2 Large family apartment with 3 bedrooms or 90 m2 shared flat for 5 people.
