Civil Disobedience In Design: Can methodology testing through seeding sites lead to citizen based programming in The Lafitte Corridor? I began my thesis investigation exploring the Latte Corridor in New Orleans never having visited before.Walking around the area I spoke with many residents about the area and what they knew about the proposed greenway. Many residents had no idea their had even been a greenway proposed. The citizens that had heard about it believed that it would never be built because of their understandable lack of faith in the cities government. From my initial immersion into the corridor I decided to act in the spirit of New Orleans, which fostered the seed of the civil rights movement, and explore how civil disobedience in the design process could help capture this space for the betterment of the surrounding communities. In many ways my investigation was also a personal response to the stagnation I saw in the design process in the eld of landscape architecture. With each visit to New Orleans and the corridor I came up with a new methodology for creating designs in the corridor. Since designing the whole corridor seemed counter productive to its full activation I decided to analyze it and nd 4 areas I felt would react best to citizen based interventions, which I called seeding sites. As my colleagues and I evaluated the methodologies I began to realize that with each evaluation I was coming up with requirements specic to citizen based programming in the corridor. With these guidelines I created a program specic to the corridor (kiosks) that would connect the four seeding site designs and bring together the whole corridor which I believe could push city processes into seeing the cities most under utilized resource which is the Latte Corridor. d be I ing inn The Lafitte Corridor? g igns sethristoww@y@@ ahhhhoo.com 11 11. ROMA: Pontifical Arsenal and ex-Gil Plazza Design Informal Living Camps Storm-water Sources Impermeable Surfaces Auto and Pedestrian Movement [email protected] In our study abroad studio we were asked to design a modern day plazza for the former Pontifical Arsenal which is a historical site along the former walls of Rome. Designs were to be generated with a more informal analysis which included sketching, watercoloring, photography, and tours of Rome and the surrounding country side. The design I generated focused on building and magnifying existing eliminates to create a public place were businesses could freely occupy the space without taking away from its existing character. Along the river I replaced the concrete levee with more ephemeral gabion walls that collect sediment and generate a more lively ecosystem. 13 13. In an investigation with Majorie Woodbury we looked at the current, past, and future of an impaired creek that ran through the University of Auburn's campus. Through this investigation a design was generated that centered around daylighting and rock vein stream pedestrian corridors. [email protected] 14 14. I worked on a se ion along the Chattanooga Creek whi is a heavily contaminated creek that drains into the Tennessee River. The concept behind my design centered around the idea of embracing the pa indu rial life of the landscape as-well as the concept of a highly performative designer landscape to filter and cap pa contamination. The design gives the space the ability to develop and ange to the surrounding communities needs. 15 15. 16 16. [email protected] 17 17. In my first studio project I was assigned to design The Cut in Birmingham Alabama with the design guideline of a music score. The Cut is a four block section of a old abandoned railroad which is sunken below the existing infrastructure. The concept my design was to embrace the industrial feel of the site highlighting graffiti and vining vegetative growth. The main component of my design was an L.E.D pedestrian path that strategically aligned the lighting to highlight various areas. [email protected] 18. [email protected] With Conrad Fafard Syngenta I conducted soil research on a variety of annual production plants. I tested a wide variety of soil substrates in various greenhouses in the Greater Twin Cities Area. Working closely with the growers I was able to make recommendations on productions soils to help increase production quality, efciency, and overall bottom line. 19 19. 20 20. City of Cottage Grove Design Internship: Future Park Design (Arboretum) During an internship with the City of Cottage Grove I was asked to create a design on Jamaica Ave. for a future city park. My proposal centered around the idea of a native species arboretum. I precedented my idea and design to the Cottage Groves City Council. sesesesesesesesethththththththtththriririririririiiiststststststttowowowowowwow@y@y@y@y@y@y@yy@y@y@ ahhahahahahaaahoooooooooooo .c.c.c.c.cccccomomomomommomomomm22 22. seseseseseseseseseeseseseeseseeeeeethhthththththththhthththththhthttht ririririrrrrr stowwwwww@y@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@y@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@y@@y@y@@y@@@@@@@@yahoo.com 23
