The masthead is iconic and recognisable. Although the masthead is covered by the main image, loyal readers would know what magazine it is by seeing the typography and house-style that is reoccurring in all Rock Sound magazines.

The puffs also act as pugs at the top of the magazine front cover. Having these at the top of the magazine makes it more visible for the readers and entices the reader to engage with the magazine.

There are many buzz words that are used, including “Free” and “Meet”, these entice the reader and make it so the reader is more likely to engage with the magazine if they see a free or exclusive offer.

The main image is of the band, Green Day, who is also the feature headline and is what the main article is within the magazine. The main image has the band members all giving direct mode of address and this engages the audience more to the magazine.

The people in the main image are positioned in the triangle of focus position, which draws attention to the front point. They are also wearing odd types of clothing which would generally be associated with the genre of music that this magazine is aimed for.

The house-style includes the colour scheme of pale blue, dark blue and a bright pink. This is a large contrast of colours to the colours that would generally be associated with the rock type genre of music. This could challenge the audiences perception of the magazine type and could also open the magazine up to a larger range of people.

The barcode is positioned sideways and not only shows the price in pounds, but also in US dollars, Canadian dollars and Australian dollars. This can show the diversity of places in which the magazine is sold.

There is a website address that is featured and this can show the online presence that the magazine has.

There is a puff type box which includes the words “Rehab, Rebirth and Revolution.” This is alliteration and could entice the reader into wanting to find out more about the main article.

This contents page goes against the codes and conventions of a normal contents page. This is by not actually having a headline saying that this is the contents page and also being a double page contents, yet on one page back to back rather than a double page spread.

On the first page there is a box with the words “Welcome to Rock Sound” and this makes the reader feel welcome to the magazine. This box is red with a black outline and text in white, this could suggest the house-style that may be carried forward in the magazine.

Down the bottom of this first page, there are links to all social media accounts, emails, telephone numbers and other contact details. This suggests the magazines online presence and opens the magazine to a larger audience with the online digital press. This also attracts a younger audience as it is branching into what we generally use in day to day life, thus being social media and internet.

The words “Hit us up” act as demanding words which engage the reader and are almost like commands into telling the reader what to do.

This first page of contents does not show what is inside the magazine yet acts as the media pack as it shows how to get in touch with certain people and how to advertise in the magazine. This could make up for the lack of a media pack online.

There is a large piece of text on the right hand side of the first contents page, which gives an insight on what the magazine is about and what genre it is aimed at along with details about what the expect in this issue. This is very odd to have but gives the reader a sense of exclusivity due to the sign off of “Team Rock Sound”, making it seem like a personal message that is given to the reader of the magazine.

The main image on this contents page is the repeated main image that was on the front cover.

In the bottom right hand corner of the page, there is the page number and it also shows the web address for the magazine.

The text also praises the work that they have done and the publishers that they have taken on, giving us more of an insight into the production to the magazine.

This second page of the contents page shows what is inside the magazine, with insights on some of the double page spreads that are featured within the magazine.

“In Rock Sound this month…” shows the reader what is to be included within the magazine and shows previews of double page spreads that are featured within the magazine this month.

There are 3 double page spreads shown on the contents page and all are very different from each other with regards to the colour schemes and main images and typography that are used.

Each double page spread is positioned in a faint blue box with an arm reaching to the headline of the article of where the double page spread is located within the magazine making it easier to access the article.

There are 4 sub headings that include “News and Regulars”, “Exposure”, “Features” and “Albums”. Each of which are written in bold, white text on a red block background, showing their importance and making them stand out.

The page numbers are written in a red, bold font which shows the importance of the numbers and also makes it easier to differentiate the numbers to the text of the headline of the article.

The headlines of the articles are in a black, bold text and stand out from the anchorage text which is seen underneath each article headline to show what the article is about. The anchorage text is in a regular, black font and just adds extra information to the headline.

A drop cap is used in the letter “W” and this showcases the start of the article on this double page spread.

The colour scheme is completely different from the house-style that is shown on the front cover and these colours of black, red and white are the main colours that Rock Sound use throughout their magazine, as shown in the contents page, so this could be argued as the house-style to follow to continuity of the magazine.

The text is written in black font on a white box background, making it easier to read.

The text “Sons Of Anarchy” is written in its ‘signature font’ which engages the reader into what the piece is about. There is also the engagement with fans that would automatically recognise what the article is about once they see the font type.

There is a quote which is pulled out of the text and is written in a gravelly type of font and positioned on the pavement almost as if it was spray painted on the pavement, this could suggest originality and could also engage the reader and shows a new way of editing photos and text in which can make the double page spread look different to others.

The typography of text used in “Silver Screen Dreams” is written in an old fashion, Hollywood style text and this could suggest an upcoming film or series, which is what the article then goes on to explain about.

The questions asked in this part of the article are written in white bold text whereas the answers are written in a regular white text, showing the reader where there is a new question being asked and a new topic, making it easier to read.

The “Green Day” signature font is used in the top right hand corner of the the double page spread, which is also noticeable on each double page spread of this feature article. This can show the reader where the article is when flicking through pages and could also show what the articled is about.

The main image is in black and white, and this challenges the conventions of a normal magazine double page spread, yet it entices the reader and makes the other colours pop more with the red and white being more engaging.
