Some of the highlighted lyrics gave me ideas. The lyrics are quite dark, which is strange for a EDM (electronic dance music) track. Because of this I thought a play on colour would be a great way to portray narrative in the video.

The video shows a girl who is severely depressed. So much so, she feels her life is colourless. The video would be shot in black and white with flashes on the screen of the things that have happened in her life (cyber bullying, home life etc.) However, whilst on her travels she sees what she has not seen or felt in a long time. Colour. She approaches it only to find another signal flare. She continues to follow the colour. The further she travels the more colour comes back into the frame. At this point the Middle 8 of the song will commence with a fizz. This is where we would cut to shots of the character all dressed in white in a black room. The lyrics ‘im not alone, you’ll be watching over us’ play and a colourful hand appears on her chest. Signifying she is not alone in her depression. More hands fill her plain clothes until the final chorus kicks in. This is where colour will literally be thrown at the character. The shots will be full colour, vibrant and happy.

The message of the song is that no matter how dark you may feel your life is, there is always a light, in this case a colour - at the end of the tunnel.

Song: Porter Robinson & Madeon – Shelter

My initial

ideas… Lyrics:

I could never find the right way to tell you have you noticed I’ve been gone?cause I left behind the home that you made me but I will carry it along

mm it's a long way forward so trust in meI’ll give them shelter like you've done for me and I know I’m not aloneyou'll be watching over usuntil you're gone

when I’m older I’ll be silent beside you I know that words are not enoughand they won't need to know our names or our faces but they will carry on for us

Music video inspiration:

Flyleaf – All Around Me

The video starts in an all-white room as as the song progresses, the walls begin to drip with paint. Layers and layers overlap creating a vivid on screen experience. The edit cuts to and from paint covered band members and all white scenes. This plays with the concept of time and continuity, which works in favour of the track.

Justin Bieber – Where are ü Now

The video uses the technique of rotoscoping where each frame is drawn over with graphic content. I really like this concept as I found myself pausing every frame to see the different hiding messages throughout the song. It gives the edit a stop motion feel and I believe this would be a great technique to use in our video. We could use this to portray hidden messages throughout the song to enhance our narrative.

I think this would be a great technique to use in or graphical content and could lead to many very interesting shots.

a-ha – Take On Me

Stop motion animation mixed with live action footage make this video a feat in itself. A Love story between two worlds. Being able to mix animation and live action would be great. However, maybe rotoscoping would be more ideal for our music video as out track is EDM (electronic dance music)

Duran Duran – Rio

Duran Duran have used colour to express the outright beauty of ‘Rio’ in this video. They have almost turned a human into a painting/piece of art. This is more of an artistic take on using colour in a video. We could do this too. However, we could use it to portray a narrative.

Coldplay – Hymn For The Weekend

This video plays on culture. It is shot in the middle of ‘Holi’ the Indian festival of colour. The costumes and themes throughout also portray this. This is another example of how to use colour in music videos.

5

Page 6: Research pack by group 3 for mg

6

Madeon – The City

In this video colour is used to portray happiness and friendship. However, it is in quite a dark tone as rocket launchers and grenades are used to explode colour. This is an example of how tone can be used to give a video a certain feel.

Paramore - Now

This video also uses colour as weapons. However, it is in the opposite way. An army of colour battles and army of black and grey. When struck the coloured army bleed life and

6

Page 7: Research pack by group 3 for mg

colour. Their aim is to bring a sense of colour back to the lives of the army. This is a very uplifting message and makes for a great video from a very simple concept.

Bring Me The Horizon – Shadow Moses

This video plays with flares as a signal. This helped me develop my ideas about how colour could lead someone back to happiness. The video also uses a strange style of editing where frames seem to conjoin and ripple. It gives the shots a very ‘wavy’ feel. This would be great for an instrumental track too.

Storyboards:

My storyboards for the first scene of the music video. The edit should cut on the beats of the song. The idea is to zoom on every beat until we get close enough to her eyes. Then her eyes open and we see the rotoscoping that will be fireworks of some sort. This is a play on the narrative that the audience will realise by the end of the video.

This is the storyboard for the final scene. The idea is that both the beginning and end can be looped into an infinite story. To do this I would have to reverse the intro and edit it to the beats of the music. The story board can be flipped as well to give another effect.

This is the storyboard for the Middle 8 of the song. This is where the lyrics get dark and talk about not being alone. For this part I see hands slowly appearing on our white character, slowly bringing colour back into her life. When the chorus hits powder paint will be thrown all over her making her white clothes fully coloured. This is an artistic approach to the narrative.

Music video research

The graphic design students gave us example videos to get inspiration from that fit with their ideal narrative and imagery.Out first example was ‘AllMy Friends by Snake Hips ft. Tinashe’, we used this video as an example of the colour editing and lighting effect the graphics people had envisioned.

The tilting camera effect that runs throughout the video would either need to be edited in, or achieved with a camera on tracks to get the pan effect. Our filming space is not big enough to lay down tracks so we will have to try the to make his effect happen in editing.

E USE OF SMOKE BOMBS, LOUR CHALK AND FLAIRS In

ve Lo’s not on drugs musicdeo inspired the motoin graphics udent. And they felt it fit withe music and the overall theme freedom and escape.

The rotoscope in this video by WINNER is overlaying moving colourful images th graphic students found inspiration for rotoscoping in our video, including colour following a walking figure.

The rotoscope in this Justin Bieber video shows dynamic movement and motion tracking that will inspire the graphics in our video.

Props Research

We listened to many songs, and when we finally decided on the song ‘Shelter’, everyone had ideas of what we could use. The song is electronic music, so from that standpoint we looked at many other songs in the same genre, saw what they’d done and took inspiration from them. We also listened closely to the lyrics of the song to get a good narrative.

The first thing we decided was that we wanted to have a powder paint scene, where powder paint was getting thrown in slow motion around a room and at the main character. We looked online for a safe powder paint and found a load being sold from running events where they use it to throw it at people.

We bought 24 mixed selection to use, combined with shipping it is £22.75.

The second prop we

decided we wanted to use were smoke bombs as we thought that the main character could followthem through the city to the scene with the powder paint.

Overall the 10 assorted smoke bombs cost £14.15.

11

12

Along with the Smoke Bombs and Powder Paint we bought Dust Sheets, Safety Equipment, and multiple clothes for the main character to wear and change into when it gets messy.

We also thought about using lights as strobes, paint cannons and confetti in our piece but decided afterwards we already had too much to try and do in the time frame we’d been set.

Cameras

• Sony FS7• Canon EOS C500• Black Magic Cinema Camera

Sony FS7 – Good camera for slow motion shots which would be good for the scene with powder paint being thrown at the actor. Not good in low light which is a problem as we would be filming in a dark room using only Aspherics 2 Spotlights.

Canon EOS C500 – Good for slow motion and much better in low light than the Sony FS7. Not available in CLR for the day we would be needing it.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera 4K – Not the best for slow motion as it only goes up to 30fps but is amazing quality especially at 4K. The rigs CLR offers makes this a good camera for following the actor when she is walking down a street. This is the camera we have booked from CLR.

Slow MotionIn my research I will be looking into the best Slow Motion camera I can get from CLR and how to actually use them. From looking at CLR and getting people’s opinions, I have two cameras which I will be comparing. On top of this I will also research into what to film in slow motion for our project.

From CLR I picked the Black Magic Ursa 4k vs the Sony FS7 4K in order to find out which one performs the best I looked at the specs from the brand website.

Black Magic Ursa 4K

60 Frames Per Second in 4.6K

120 Frames Per Second in 1080HD

(Design, 2016)

Sony FS7 180 Frames Per Second in 1080HD

(Films, 2015)

15

From this I can see that the Sony FS7 shoots 180 fps in 1080 compared to the 60 less fps Black Magic. However, there is more factors to take into apart from high frame rates. I will be looking at Youtube and forums to get advice on how to use these cameras. Videos that I have watched:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aG54-WR-4yk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziQqeU7lTAI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo3AXf7SSqM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZnr43YxCAI

After watching these videos, I have come to conclusion that the Sony FS7 is the better camera, it shoots in more frames per second then the Ursa. The sensor is larger in the Sony FS7 which allows more light in and it Sony is easier to upload footage to your computer.

I have noticed that most electro pop music has slow motion in their video, this could be seen as the norm for this genre of music video. It is now rear to see any music video without slow motion in it. It makes the music dramatic as it slows down reality. The music video Blame made by Calvin Harris and John Newman, a electro dance song. It is mostly shot at a high rate.

LOCATIONS

Locations we want to film are mainly abandoned as we need a large space to film it in. Props we will be using requires the location to be wide enough for us to create a colourful mess. The choice of location also fits in with the theme and concept of our music video. Essentially she feels alone and depressed, therefore our locations wed want it to be somewhere large where there is no one around. We believed a good mixture of indoor and outdoor locations would be good, mainly for the props as paint powder would be used indoor and smoke bombs outdoor. We want our locations to also look dull as it will be the post production of the motion graphics effects and the props which will bring out the colour in the music video.

We are hoping to film in room 212 as it very spacious and large, and most importantly has white walls. This will be used for the beginning scene/intro of our music video where the female cast would be thrown paint powder on her face. Most pop videos usually have a blank white screen therefore; this is very conventional to see.

Forests/Woods in London, open space but surrounded by trees, cannot see industrial. We wanted an open and private space like the woods (the location of the wood we have chosen is Oxley Wood in South London) as it is open and quiet, therefore believe this is is the best place for the smoke bombs since we are unable to do it in a small or indoor place due to health and safety reasons.

The Greenwich Tunnel, this will be used to film the walking scene of the cast. Other walking scenes we would be using will be filmed in Soho, Covent Garden early in the morning when it is quiet. We are hoping to use as much location as we can for small cutaway scenes due to the fast and upbeat music. The locations will be very similar as we do not want it to be crowded and contain a simple pathway to walk in.

EDITING

Editing Style:Most of the music videos we have looked at have very fast pace editing and are mainly focused on the visuals. Even though our plan is to film using paint powder and smoke bomb, a lot of post production will be use to bring out the colour and extra details as we will be filming some scene in Black Magic Camera therefore, the colour quality of the image will be dull. Justin Bieber’s video where are you now is a good example of how we want the paint to visually look on the face, this is the paint that may be added on in post production as we will hopefully have more control in the movement and pace of the paint. Tove Lo’s ‘Not on Drug’ video displays smoke bombs which will be filmed however slowed down through the editing process. Video transitions for the music video will be experimented with at first as is not decided upon yet until we visually see how it appears. For our

with a dip to white transition before cutting to another shot. Also, we are thinking of camera movement from tilting up to the sky to down on the singer would be a good way to transition to another shot. Another option is using the props, again, Tove Lo’s music video uses a lot of smoke bombs which fills in the whole composition of the shot then zooms back out to introduce another scene in the music video. Using props as a transition is a good way to keep consistency and create a house style in the music video as it allows the viewers to see familiarity through out the music video without the need to repeat some shots but use it in a different way.Overall, the editing will be heavily made up of motion graphics. The type of effects we will be using are very visual to create a surreal, unrealistic dream like effect. The use of this to for the audience to differentiate the lead singer’s dull reality to her colour dream. The motions we will be using to display this is trap code form, mirroring, possibly green screening for the wing scene to represent freedom, compositing, mirroring and motion tracking. in the post production process our main focus at the end is too also focus on the grading, this is the main method we will be using as our narrative: the viewers are expected to understand the difference of emotion the lead singer feels in the music video and believe editing in different colour/tinting it is the best way to do so.
