LITERATURE REVIEW

We have used a few concepts, knowledge’s and fundamentals from what we have

learnt.

Rubber, the product of this age is cultivated throughout the world with intense

care. Artificial rubber has not yet crossed the quality of natural rubber. The use of

rubber is increasing throughout the world day by day. Hence all the nations including

India are trying to increase the production in parity with the demand. Rubber

cultivators are now getting a good value for their product. Rubber has got a

remarkable share in the agricultural economy. Even small holders are coming forward

for planning rubber in their lands. Recently a situation has arisen where there are no

laborers for tapping the rubber latex from the rubber trees. A serious shortage is felt

in this field. Even if laborers are available they are not skilled enough for tapping the

latex efficiently. Also they won't stick on to the field for a long time.

Hence the rubber planters find it difficult to get skilled laborers for tapping the

latex and have to afford the higher rates of labor charges. While the present invention

is applicable to tapping trees in general, rubber growers have long recognized the

need to obtain the rubber latex by tapping a slit cut with a 30 degree slope to the

horizontal on a half circumference of a rubber tree, generally of the genus Heave.

While the art has available numerous mean of cutting the rubber trees, none is as

effective against the present invention which runs down the side of the tree

automatically and as inexpensive and usage. Further it is a severe headache for the

rubber farmers to get skilled laborers in this field and the mounting labor charges,

welfare expenses etc. A device for the grooving and slitting of the free surface for the

automatic tapping of rubber latex comprises.

A heavy duty motor comprising spur gear system for driving the said mobile

device upon the tree surface. Cutting means with four wings manufactured from high

tempered metal connected to the said motor for cutting and slitting the surface of the

rubber tree. Guard rollers with a diameter of 15 mm for the easy movement of the

said device upon the rugged rubber tree. A handle connected to the ends of the chassis

for the easy handling of the said device. The device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the

said power supply means comprises at least 10 serially connected, rechargeable Ni-

Cd storage batteries of 12V DC and 2500 mA. The device as claimed in claim 2

wherein the said batteries are recharged from 230V AC by means of the eliminator or

adapter socket provided at the rear end of the chassis. The device as claimed in claim

1 wherein the said heavy duty motor comprises a gear box of the ratio 6:1 with a

length of 47mm, outer diameter of 37mm providing 1300 RPM at 12V DC and 10

Watts and is connected at the front end of the said device.

The device as claimed in claim 1 wherein the said rubber tree cutting means

comprises highly tempered metal saws fitted directly in the pulley of the said motor at

a distance of at least 2 inches from the device chassis. The device as claimed in claim

1 and 5 wherein the said cutting means are connected to at least two guard rollers

with a diameter of at least 15mm through a metal rod for the free movement of the

said cutting means upon the surface of the rugged rubber tree and for protecting the

said cutting means from the injuries during the operation. The device as claimed in

claim 1 wherein the said glider wheels are provided at the exterior of the said device

in the anti-clock wise direction and parallel to the cutting means for the smooth

movement of the said device over the tree surface. The device as claimed in claim 7

wherein the said glider wheels comprising two wheels are separated by half inch

distance with one wheel projected at 2mm to the front as compared to the other wheel

and are activated by a motor for the smooth movement of the device over the marked

regions of the tree surface. The device as claimed in claim 8 wherein the said glider

wheels helps the movement of all the parts of the said device in all directions and in

proper alignment with the equilibrium. A device for the automatic tapping of latex

from the rubber trees substantially as herein described with reference to

accompanying drawings.

METHODOLOGY

Our Project Manager, Mardiana Anis arranges a meeting with all his team which

are a designer, Zetty Akhtar and Hafizd Zulhasni, an engineer, to help her to design a

device. The purpose of Project Manager to do this meeting is to produce a device

which can help the farmers to increase their rate of productivity and while reducing

their effort, but with an increasing income. During this first meeting, Project Manager

asked designer and engineer to list some of the objectives that want to be achieved by

the device that will be designed by designer. After listing the objectives that want to

be achieved, our designer need to design the product that satisfy our objectives and

with advices from our engineer to make sure the process in designing the product run

smoothly.

During the process of designing the product, our Project Manager also lend his

hand by supervising and providing technical direction to the project team members,

mostly and especially to the designer and the engineer. To design the device that

working continuously with less of errors, our designer need to cooperate and discuss

with our engineer because the device that we want to design must extremely follow

the basic of engineering concept. This is because, the device which follow the

engineering concept will have higher tendency of having longer life span.

Our engineer also needs to determine carefully what type of the materials that will

be used in the device. Besides, he also need to provide the dimension of the device

that will be produced accurately because the dimension of the devices also give some

effect to the effectiveness of the device. After all the basic already been considered by

our engineer, now the designer can design the device by guide of the engineer. When

all of this done, the specification and properties of the device need to be shown to our

leader which is Project Manager to make sure the device is following the objectives

that have been stated earlier. After getting agreement from Project Manager, finally

the design of our device will be used to make a real device.

DISCUSSION

There are few advantages of our rubber tapping device. Firstly, the rubber

tapper can tap a rubber tree much easier without less training. This device with the

help of user manual, it will only cost one day to master it. Secondly, the raw rubber

can be extracted from the rubber tree more efficiently with this device. By using this

device, the cutting on the tree is constant, so there will be no part with deep cutting

because too deep the cutting, it can kill the rubber tree. Then, this device is affordable

for large scale rubber plantation also for the small scale rubber plantation. Moreover,

if this device is being use by the employee with large scale plantation, the employee

can increase the profit by lowering labor cost. Lastly, the durability of this device is

high which the main body is made from aluminium and the blade made from stainless

steel that can withstand toward the unpredictable weather in Malaysia

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we hope that our invention which is rubber tapping device will be

able to help rubber tapper farmer to extract the rubber more efficiently. Apart from

that, we also hope that our invention can help the rubber plantation farmer to increase

their profit with the affordable price of this device. Hopefully, our product can bring

great benefit to all people in the rubber tapper industry.

Finally, there are also a few limitation of this device. It maintenance is too

costly. The blade itself has to be change every six month. To tap the rubber tree

efficiently, the blade must be sharp. The joint of this device must also be lubricant

regularly. So, in the future, we are going to replace the blade with some other material

that can withstand the weather in Malaysia but with the same or lower cost.
