PREFACE

My mother always told me that I have to understand both sides of the story to make an accurate judgement when faced with decisions in life, often reminding me of that one serenity poem. God, grant me the serenity To accept the things I cannot change,The courage to change the things I can,And wisdom to know the difference. When it boils down, all we are, are our decisions. This or That. What we choose decides who we are and who we want to be. So you better believe that I took her advice to heart. You could say I live by it.

Knowing boths aspects of the larger whole is important for many rea-sons, and I believe it is this idea of dualism that has lingered in me for so long.

I have witness the pitfalls of homelessness as well as highs of traveling abroad and living like a diplomat. One thing that I have learned in these travels is that everyone want to be somewhere else, unless they dont. The simple fact is, life is an oxymoron. This has to exist, for that to exist. Extreme poverty exists because of excess in greed. Love is only ever there when one has known hate. I believe that finding the balance and serenity within the two can lead to a more productive human experience for all of us involved.

PROJECT BRIEF

The project is to create an exhibition that showcases who I am, or a part of who I am. I chose to focus on the idea of dualism within myself as it relates to society as a whole. Dualism is a very prevailant theme in my life experience, and that being so, I want this exhibition to represent that idea at every level. The exhibition will feature two, large, circular rooms, that intersect as would a Venn diargram. Each circle will represent one half of a whole idea, as with dualism, each polarity justifies and maintains the existence of the other. One room represents positivity and the other negativity, though the artifacts on display may introduce a grey area. The area of intersection will be used as a breather room from excess of the other rooms.

Within each room will reside 6 idead pillars, totaling to 12 pillars. These pillars represent and display an aspect in life that I have experienced, such as and love & hate, or truth & deception, that is also relates to the global human experience. The “positive” aspects will be parted from the “negative” into the seperate rooms, forcing the audience to travel to other room to gain the full expierence. The phrase, “The grass is always greener on the other side,” conveys the imagery and ideas I will display.

The objectives of this exhibition is to tell the audience a story that they can relate to in some way, whether it be something that they have experienced, or felt, or touched. I want to engage all the senses to convey my ideas of dualism.

In each room will be be a display featuring a story and and object, which will be dependent on the room that it is in.

In terms of colors being used, the exhibit will feature black, white, and lime green, as well as grass. The grass will be on the floors of the two different rooms, with the pillar standing through them as if it were Stonehenge, representing knowledge and its importance as well as mysticism in my life.

THE AIM OF THIS EXHIBITION IS TO INTRODUCE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC, THE IDEA THAT BLACK AND WHITE DOES NOT TRULY EXIST. THE ONLY THING THERE IS, IS DIFFERENCE TO VARYING DEGREES.

This sculpture will rotate almost in misery, in a very sluggish haphazard way. It, at random, and moves slightly more as people leave the area. Death is a lonely experience and can happen randomly.
