Process of Creating a Pattern Language


Pattern Mining:Process of collecting knowledge of practice from people’s experiences, and transferring the data into patterns


Clustering:・process of organizing qualitative data collected・KJ Method

KJ Method• Invented by Jiro Kawakita (Japanese anthropologist) to organize qualitative

data collected from various cultures• More meaningful discoveries are found through clustering data without any

conceptual framework • “ideas should not be clustered based on resemblence of what they superficially

look like”• Feelings play a large part of this method rather than rational thinking

1) Element Mining: Divergent process to gather as much info as possible

2) Clustering:Convergent process to discover relationship between the information

3) Labelling

Each grouping that is formed in the process is a candidate for a potential pattern

Throughout the KJ method, you are mapping out the elements by their meanings: the physical distance between two ideas should represent their closeness in meaning

1) Element Mining: divergent process to gather as much info as possible

2) Clustering with the KJ Approach:

Elements must be considered on a one-to-one relationship:potential categories shall not be thought of.
