Corporate International Hospitality
•Assignment on the Interior Design of restaurant TOSCANO in UB City Bangalore.
•“Interior design is the process of shaping the experience of interior space, through the manipulation of spatial volume as well as surface treatment. Not to be confused with interior decoration, interior design draws on aspects of environmental psychology, architecture, and product design in addition to traditional decoration.
•An interior designer is a person who is considered a professional in the field of interior design or one who designs interiors as part of their job. Interior design is a creative practice that analyzes programmatic information, establishes a conceptual direction, refines the design direction, and produces graphic communication and construction documents. In some jurisdictions, interior designers must be licensed to practice.”
• Toscano is a fine dining Italian restaurant, pizzeria and wine bar. Styled quite internationally, it is located on the rooftop of UB City Mall and has a relaxed and trendy open-air ambience. They do some special events like a blindfold dinner where the diners eat blindfolded in darkness, as according to them it heightens the sense of taste.
Principles of Design
•Balance (Unity)•Proportion (Scale)•Rhythm (Repetition)•Emphasis (Focal Point)
Balance (Unity)• Toscano in it’s
decoration is very balanced as the place is spread over in a similar manner with no difference in the setting between the wrought iron tables.
•Also, while looking at the place you tend to take the whole place in at once. There is nothing specific that draws one’s attention. This creates balance.
•The color scheme used in TOSCANO is monochromatic with contrast. They’ve used the earth shades of brown and cream as contrast. This looks not only beautiful and elegant but also is very balanced.
•Wrought iron chairs, a fountain in the middle and lots of open spaces are a treat to all the senses.
Proportion (Scale)
• In terms of proportion, TOSCANO is aptly proportioned as the setting is quite spacious in a limited area as well as the designer is able to include many more tables and is still cosy. The size of the tables and chairs go along well with the overall proportions of the place.
Rhythm (Repetition)•The setting is very rhythmic as it looks as if in a flow and not abrupt. The same design is followed from one end of the restaurant to the other in terms of color, shapes etc, which can be easily noticed in the wooden flooring, the furniture and the wooden paneling of the walls.
•The design is continuous.
Emphasis (Focal Point)
• The design’s emphasis flows from the wooden paneling used in the place to the tables with shades and follows to the counters present.
• The design is rhythmic and emphasizes on the subtlety of the place and it’s classic taste.
•The emphasis can be seen more clearly at dinner time when tables are lit with candlelight.
Objectives of Design
•Beauty•Expressiveness•Functionality•Usage
Beauty•TOSCANO overall
looks beautiful from inside as well as the outside. While standing outside a person is automatically drawn to the place as it looks beautiful in it’s setting.
•The designers effort to create a replica of the restaurants of Paris seems to have worked as the place looks charming, romantic and inviting in it’s open air setting with candlelit tables.
•Wrought iron chairs, a fountain in the middle and lots of open spaces are a treat to all the senses.
Expressiveness• •TOSCANO catches
the eye with its Olive green and Mahogany interiors.
•The place expresses elegance and as soon as you enter the place you feel romance in the air.
Functionality
TOSCANO’s design has good functionality. Proper functionality is simply the best possible design and best possible location of this design that the customer’s require to feel comfortable.
TOSCANO is clean, tidy, brightly lit during the day and candlelit during the night, warm, visually appealing, is relatively dry, has very clean and healthy breathing air, surely has high level health and safety standards. Great functionality and best possible materials used has also increased it’s visual appeal.
Usage• The usage of the
space and the setting is excellent. Placed on the rooftop of the UB city, TOSCANO makes apt use of the open air and the excellent view of the place.
• The use of green plants between the tables also gives a very fresh look.
Elements•Line- The lines used in TOSCANO
are curve, horizontal, and vertical. •Color- The place follows a
monochromatic color system of earth shade of browns (mahogany) with contrast of cream.
•Texture- The texture of the surfaces can be seen as smooth.
• Light- The design mostly uses natural light during day time and candlelight during night time. Also, few yellow lights have been placed conspicuously to give the place a more warm effect.
•Value- The design of the place clearly shows value or tone. The use of the light and dark color scheme works wonders as it giver a form to the place and the objects placed around the restaurant.
•Therefore, these were few of the elements present in the restaurant that I could notice.
