INSOMNIA STILLS ANALYSIS
EDITING – FADE IN AND OUT (LIKE BLOOD OR INK)
This still was taken when the titles were fading
in and out. The titles were black and fading like
smoke, it was like blood or ink was seeping out.
This editing creates mystery and sets the mood
for what will happen in the film.
It is a technical code as it is creating mystery
and adding effect to the film
BLOOD – EXTREME CLOSE UP OF BLOOD
The red liquid seeping out of the cotton or
whatever material it is looks like blood. Blood
creates as a fear in the audience and they will
automatically assume the film will be of horror
and will have something to do with killing.
The red liquid on the white material makes it
stand out and shows it is significant.
SETTING
The white setting creates a depressing,
hopeless, dreary piercing environment which
sets the mood for the audience.
The muted colours suggest that there is no
human activity around.
This setting is very isolated and has no
human activity around, this again sets a
bleak mood.
OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT - MIRROR
This shot creates mystery because it is not
showing the characters face. This part only
shows what he is doing with his hands, this
creates a strong feel of wanting to see the
character in the audience.
The character in this shot is shown by the
reflection of the mirror. This teases the
audience because they do not know what is
real and what is not in the reflection.
EXTREME CLOSE UP – CHARACTERISATION
This shot shows the expression of the
character. In this shot the character looks
very serious, this gives the audience a
sense of panic and worry.
This close up shows only his eyes, the
purpose of this is to give us a symbolic code
which will allow the audience to read his
emotions.
CLOSE UP OF PROPS
This shot shows a shot of what looks like a
victim. This picture and all the paperwork
around a guy in a suit give the audience
an impression that it is an investigation.
Investigations give the audience a sense of
mystery as they want to know what they
are investigating.
ANGLE SHOT OF PROPS
The newspaper gives the audience a little
insight on what is going on and what the
storyline may be based on.
The angle shot focuses on what is significant
to make sure the audience gets the
information needed to understand the film.
SETTING - GOING INTO THE FOG
Fog shows mystery because the
audience soon cannot see the plane
and what will happen when it gets
to the other side.
The fog is black which is a muted
colour. This shows bleakness in the
air.
