Battery Energy Storage Systems improve the performance and efficiency of

islanded diesel and Wind/Solar-diesel Hybrid Systems.

Islanded Diesel Systems can be improved by permitting the diesel generators to

operate at maximum efficiency while a Battery Energy Storage System regulates

the grid frequency and acts as a spinning reserve. This operating regime

maximizes the utility of the most efficient and easily maintained diesels and

thereby lowers operating costs.

Islanded Wind/Solar-Diesel Hybrid Systems with Battery Energy Storage Systems

improve performance by turning off unnecessary diesels, when clean power is

available. The result is improved stability of the islanded grid with lowered

diesel operating cost. A Battery Storage System allows more renewable

generation, by ramp rate control, thereby further lowering power generation

costs.

Hatch develops innovative solutions that meet unique site requirements to

• Why not a typical lead acid battery? - Low life under constant cycling, large

and heavy. Most vendors only supply batteries and not a system.

• Which vendor/battery do I pick? Each battery technology has its nuances

which are advantages or disadvantages depending on the application and size.

• Can I use vendor controls for my application? – do they do what I want?

• Should I use a flywheel over a battery? – better for a large number of smaller

energy/power discharge cycles but may not provide the required energy.

• What about lithium-ion battery fires? – We understand that battery
