“Coming Home”

INSPIRATION | Inspired by his interest of past family generations, David recently visited the Tenement Museum housed in a deserted tenement building in New York City’s Lower East Side. Enamored by the layers of history that can literally be seen as one wallpaper covering falls to reveal another and worn floors expose layer after layer of linoleum, David saw these patchwork surfaces as a unique, timeless quilt created by immigrants of different cultures and ethnicities who flowed in and out of the building on their journey to become an American.

Always a free spirit, as a child David wondered about his family tree and if any ancestors like him existed. Never one to do what his parents expected or considered “normal,” he wondered what gave him that sense of exploration and desire to be different. Years later, the NBC television series “Who Do You Think You Are?” captured his attention and the desire to put together the puzzle of his family history became too strong to ignore. In no time, David was addicted to ancestry.com where threads of information that were mere childhood memories became clues to patching together his family’s history. It has now become a family project, and as new facts about those who came before them are unearthed, David’s connection to his true self grows deeper.

At first glance, the long list of farmers that makes up David’s family tree does not conjure thoughts of fashion or the “finer” things in life. Dig a little deeper though and you will find a list of people who were pioneers, not content with the life they had been given - each generation moving further west in pursuit of their own manifest destiny. There are outliers in every family and David’s is no exception: the artist who chose to capture the sky in a painting rather than herd cows, entrepreneurs who set up shop in the lonely prairie. It is this spirit of unlimited possibilities in which David creates and exemplifies a force for change, connecting to his family and true self in ways never imagined.

Sadly, there are still far too many people in the world who do not feel that sense of belonging and being home. CrOp is about creating opportunities, so for this season we have partnered with Covenant House who helps to give children a place that they can call home. Founded 38 years ago with the mission to help homeless kids, its first intake center was a dilapidated tenement building in New York City’s East Village. Today, Covenant House is the largest privately funded agency in the Americas providing food, shelter, immediate crisis care, and essential services to homeless, throwaway, and runaway kids.

ABOUT | CrOp by David Peck is a line with a conscience. Based in Houston, TX, the name “CrOp” is short for “creative opportunities,” something that designer David Peck aims to develop by working with a network of artists who can in turn generate greater opportunities by working together. David designs in collaboration with creative minds who value giving back and support a cause that in turn lands as the inspiration behind each season’s collection.

Started in 2010 with a just a few pieces, CrOp utilizes socially responsible and sustainable, eco-friendly materials including organic merino wool knit, satin jersey, fine count organic pima cotton, fine natural silks, organic wool twill, and fair trade textiles. A majority of the fabrics are made in the United States and each fabric is selected for its durability and low impact on the environment. All of CrOpʼs custom prints are done with methods that have the least impact on the environment.

A portion of sales from each season is donated to a charity tied to the inspiration for that season. For FW12, revenue will be donated to Covenant House in an effort to provide in-need children a place they can call “home.”

PRINTS | Each print in this collection tells a story, whether literally or through implied memory, and it is David’s wish that the wearer of each garment connects with their story and the common history that binds all humans together. The changing of the seasons in Colorado has inspired our “Autumn Leaves” print and the abstracted view of the ground seen outside the window during David’s many travels to and from Paris formed “Geography.” Bits of forgotten doilies and trim are the foundation of the “Lace” prints. In “Harbor,” a lonely ship with the Statue of Liberty in the distance is reminiscent of the countless immigrants who came to America through New York City.
