INTRODUCTION

Islamic architecture encompasses a wide range of both secular and religious styles from the foundation of Islam to the present day. 

 The principal Islamic architectural types are:  Mosque,  Tomb  Palace  Fort.

CHARMINAR•The Charminar,  is a monument and mosque located in Hyderabad, Telangana,India.•The landmark has become a global icon of Hyderabad, listed among the most recognized structures of India

•It is listed as an archaeological and architectural treasure on the official "List of Monuments" prepared by the Archaeological Survey of India.

HISTORY OF CHARMINAR It was built in 1591 by King Muhammad Kuli Qutb

Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty and also founder of the city of Hyderabad in 1591-92 A.D

After shifting his capital from Golkonda to Hyderabad he built a big structure of Charminar.

It is of Indo-Islamic architecture style, incorporating Persian architectural elements.

The Charmianr is a two storied buliding with the first floor being covered

The grand structure received its name from the four minarates which stands in the four corners of the building. Charminar means “Four Towers” (char minar)

• The Charminar is a square structure with each side 20 meters (66 feet) long, with four grand arches each facing a fundamental point that opens into four streets.

• At each corner stands an exquisitely shaped minaret, 56 meters (184 feet) high each having three storeys rising to a height to 56 metres.

• Each minaret is crowned by a bulbous dome with dainty petal-like designs at the base.

• The balcony in the first floor provides an excellent view of the surrounding areas and on the top floor, there is a small mosque which is on the western side of the monument which faces mecca

• There is a morden click of early british era present in charminar serving from the colonial era . The clock on the four cardinal directions was added in 1889.

INSPIRATION• Chaubara is a tall tower, facing in four directions. • This is an old cylindrical tower of 22 meters, height is

situated in the centre of Bidar town. • It was used as a watchtower, commanding a fine

view of the entire plateau from the top. A winding staircase of eight steps leads to the top of the tower.

MATERIALS USED • The Charminar was the first monument in the

world constructed using limemortar , pulverised marble and granite. It was only after its construction that the architects throughout the world recognised the strength of lime-mortar in raising huge structures.

Motifs and Patterns Used• charminar provides one of the best examples of cross-

ventilation

• the ornamentation of the arches was done in a three-layered fashion. the arch ends in a bud which with a relief medallion on each side. beneath this is a layer of designs and motifs

• the third layer is floral motifs. this pattern is followed on all the arched openings, though designs of the arches on the four sides of charminar are different from one another.
