GRID-Arendal
• Norwegian Foundation, Est 1989 to support United Nations Environment Programme
• Role in BlueBRIDGE - develop VREs under BlueENVIRONMENT Pillar

3
Our experience
• Aquaculture production (FAO)• Satellite processing expertise (CLS)• Blue Carbon Assessment (CLS/GRID-Arendal)• Maritime Spatial Planning (GRID-Arendal)• Infrastructure (CNR/Engineering)

Scientific & technical challenges
EU Maritime Spatial Planning Directive• Where are aquaculture facilities? How does this change
over time?• Relationship between habitats (e.g. mangroves) and
aquaculture facilitiesCBD Aichi Target 11 / Carribean Challenge• What is within managed zones (e.g. MPAs)?• Seagrass, mangrove, coral reef, geomorphology• Human uses• Reporting towards CBD Aichi target 11

5
Use cases
• Sentinel data to map aquaculture facilities in Greece
• Sentinel data to map aquaculture and mangroves in Indonesia
• Assessment of MPAs in Caribbean (Aichi target 11) – collaboration with JRC Biopama project

6
VRE utility beyond case studies
• Maps of aquaculture facilties important to understand dynamics and expansion of industry – application in developing countries
• Interactions between aquaculture and mangroves (Blue Carbon)
• Support MSP – eg EU Maritime Spatial Planning Directive
• Country reporting against CBD Aichi target 11

Aquaculture Atlas Generation VRE
• Satellite data (Sentinel) to map aquaculture facilities (Radar)
• Build system to identify type of production facilities, area, etc.
• Time series from historical satellite data
• Link with maps of vegetation from satellite - dynamics

Protected Area Impact Maps VRE
• Analyse representation of MPAs (or other managed area)
• Aichi target 11

10
Outcomes
EU Maritime Spatial Planning Directive• Aquaculture atlas generation will allow rapid
assessment of country/regional aquaculture infrastructure using automated methods
• Better understanding of industry dynamics and interactions with key habitats
CBD Aichi Target 11• Reporting towards Aichi Target 11 for countries in
standardised way

Future Steps
• VRE production started in March 2016 and the first version wil be available in December this year
• Currently integrating existing technologies for satellite processing to be accessible in VRE
• Developing analysis and reporting capabilities for Protected Area Imapct Maps
