THE RIVER BATTLE
And the battle raged with great violence, and the men of Britain strove hard to pass over the river called Saranac; But the men of war of Columbia, who were upon the opposite side of the water, opposed them, and slew them with great slaughter. And the brave Grosvenor, and Hamilton, and Riley, and the gallant Cronk, drove them back from crossing the bridges. Likewise, many were slain in the river, so that the waters of the Saranac were dyed with the blood of the servants of the king.
But Alma, with his guards, contended with the guards of the king of the Lamanites, until he slew and drove them back; and thus he cleared the ground, or rather the bank, which was on the west side of the river Sidon, throwing bodies of the Lamanites which had been slain, into the waters of Sidon, that thereby his people might have room to cross and contend with the Lamanites and the Amlicites, on the west side of the river Sidon.

THE TOWER SPEECHSo it came to pass that the husbandmen from the surrounding country gathered together, and pitched their tents hard by the city. And the number that came to the defence of the place was about thirty thousand valiant men ... the inhabitants assembled together in the midst of the city, ... the people began to gather themselves together; and, from the porch of the hall, the aged Willet, with the star-spangled banner of Columbia waving over his silvery head, addressed the surrounding multitude. And the people shouted with a loud voice, for the words of his mouth were pleasant to the sons of Liberty, and were in this wise : Lo ! three score and fourteen years have brought with them their bodily infirmities ; but were my strength as unimpaired as my love for my country, and that soul which still animates me, ye would not have found me in the rostrum, but in the midst of the battle!
And it came to pass that ... the people gathered themselves together throughout all the land, And ... they pitched their tents round about, every man according to his family ... for the multitude being so great, ... he caused a tower to be erected, that thereby his people might hear the words which he should speak unto them. ... I have caused that ye should assemble yourselves together, ... at this period of time when I am about to go down to my grave ... my whole frame doth tremble exceedingly, while attempting to speak unto you; ... And they all cried with one voice, saying, Yea, we believe all the words which thou hast spoken unto us.
