The Objective of STOP
• To eliminate injuries and occupational illness by training each team member to become a skilled observer of peoples unsafe work practices.
The Principles of STOP
• All injuries and occupational illnesses can be prevented• Safety is a line-management responsibility• All construction and operation exposures can be
reasonably safeguarded.• Preventing injuries and incidents is good business• Working safely is a condition of employment

1. LOOK - Above, Below, Behind and Inside
2. LISTEN - For Unusual Sounds
3. SMELL - For Unusual Odours
4. FEEL - For Temperatures And Vibrations
What to Look For
• An Unsafe Act.– Someone doing something unsafe.
• An Unsafe Condition.– Place where a Hazard exists.
• A Near Incident.– An action that nearly caused an accident.

Definitions
A NEAR-ACCIDENT is an event, which could cause an Accident if things were slightly different.
An UNSAFE CONDITION is something that’s wrong and will create dangers if not sorted.
A HAZARDOUS SITUATION is an unsafe act or condition.
An UNSAFE ACT is something people do when they forget or try to cut corners.
What to do
• When you see an Unsafe Act taking place.– Stop the Unsafe Act from continuing.– Speak with the person/s concerned.– They must see that their actions were Unsafe.– Ask them how they could do the job safely.– Write STOP card and hand it in.
• Near Accident actions are the same.
• When you see an Unsafe Condition.– Stop others who might be in danger.– Take action to make area safe.– Report the Unsafe Condition to Responsible Person.– Write a STOP card and hand it in to your supervisor.
