Three Rides and a FallA Model of a Perfect Job Experience

By Abdurrahman Q. AlQahtani

Beware! This is not about fashion models!

This is about a model of “job experience”

So what is A Model?!

A model is an ideal representation of a thing or an experience

A model acts as a reference to compare to and validate against

What is this Model About?

This model is about looking at your job as a series of “rides”

Each ride has its features and challenges, gives and takes

In my opinion, it should be what you seek and expect in your current or future jobs

By seeing your job through the lens of “three rides and a fall”, you can make the most out of it

So, Let’s Ride!

A Ride of Learning

1

Your first ride should be devoted to learning… and you need to learn almost everything

The environment, the work, the strategies, the tactics, the people, and every aspect of the business

Nothing outstanding is expected of you except delivering what you’re asked for

Usually, you don’t get stretched, and most people perform more or less the same in this ride

It’s a huge loss, however, to skip this ride thinking of yourself as an expert who doesn’t need to learn!

Be extra careful of “over-confidence” at this stage as it will make you blind of realities and opportunities around you

Learning is the biggest opportunity showing itself to you...

Remember!

A Ride of Performing

2

What do you expect of someone who spends quality time learning… of course quality delivery!

This is a ride where you apply the best you have learned, and seek perfection and quality

It’s your chance to give back to your organization which gave you the opportunity to learn

This is a time of a partial return on investment they made in you

Cause you still can do more than just performing!

Partial?!

A Ride of Coaching

3

Yes, coaching! Being a role model puts a responsibility on your shoulders

To teach, to seek out others, and to give them a hand on their own rides

This is a stage where you become a master of what you’re doing, and ready to mentor others

This is a ride that’s hugely missed by most people tempted to seek out their next challenge

You cannot imagine how important this ride is to you, to your colleagues, and to your organization

It’s when you hit an outstanding return on investment, talking intellectual capital of course

Not to coach and mentor others when you become a role model!

It’s selfishness!

A Ride of Falling

4

It’s no harm at all to fall after three successful rides, right?

You fall because you become saturated and/or bored of the experiences your current job gives you

This is a time when you need to look for a change and seek your next challenge

Either internally or “preferably” externally beyond the boundaries of your current organization

To reflect on the current job and seek the right factors for the next!

Remember!

This is Just a Model – Life isn’t Perfect

It’s important to understand that models are abstract and life cannot match them exactly

Keep this model as a reference and a guide, as you might experience it in different variations

For instance, consider the blending of these rides with each other: learning & performing, or performing & coaching

What counts is what feels and gets experienced the most –the peaks – and the order of these peaks

is to ride through learning, performing, and coaching in each job

What is Important

Please, look at your current job differently with this model of three rides and a fall

And use it to plan for your next job with conscious joy!

a happy and meaningful work!
