The Future of Big Data andHadoop
In 2013, Hadoop took a great leap forward withHadoop 2.0(YARN), as this converted Hadoopfrom a batchonly filebased stack into a set ofinteractive capabilities with multiple optionaldatabases. But as the Hadoop technology embarkson its second stage of evolution, how will itinfluence the Big Data world going forward?

In today’s world, almost everything that can betracked has a sensor attached. Hadoop is likely tobecome one of the best tools to monitor themomenttomoment status of performance and/oroperations based on the analysis of massiveamounts of historical data andhelp businessesincrease operational efficiency, minimize downtimeand cut costs. More SQL on Hadoop InitiativesInnovative Hadoop platforms such as Pivotal HD ,Impala or Presto are revamping the Hadooptechnology to operate more like a relationaldatabase, thus enabling users to rapidly ask datarelated questions using SQL. Recently, most of thedatabases within the Hadoop ecosystem such asMongoDB, Cassandra or HBase have been nonrelational and NoSQLbased. These platforms letyou query the same data in a realtime manner, i.e.in seconds
Five years ago, a company had to pay $100K perterabyte of data for a perpetual software license aswell as $20K per annum for support andmaintenance. Now the Hadoop technologybasically enables businesses to store, manage andanalyze the same amount of data with a $1,000 /year subscription. Hadoop will make Big Datastorage and management pretty lowcost, whichwill inevitably lead to vendor market fragmentation.
Hadoop to become the Defactostandard for building enterprise levelBig Data ApplicationsAccording to Hadoop creator Doug Cutting, “moreand more types of workloads will be supported ontop of Hadoop” in the future. Beside networkmonitoring, fraud prevention, and targeting or riskmodeling, the Hadoop technology is expected tobe used in eCommerce for processing purchasingtransactions and provide new tools for dataaggregation, analysis and interpretation. As such, itis likely to become an operating system kernel forany datacentric platform, i.e. the defacto standardfor developers to build their big data applications.

Traditionally business analysts have beenconcerned with structured data from a singledatabase source; however the use of unstructureddata from multiple sources – “Big Data” – hasgiven new depth and complexity to data analysis.Given the current talent crunch, a salary is reallyas much as a company is willing to spend. AHadoop engineer making $110,000 might easily bevalued by another company at $145,000. Both arereasonable salaries, but the second company maybe in a situation where big data tech developmenthas a larger impact, and thus is willing to pay morefor the hire. Many of the jobs in big data tend tohave highvariance compensation, as there alwaysseems to be a company out there willing to outbid.
