What are Psychologists ?

A Psychologist Conduct scientific studies to study behavior and brain function.

Develop programs that improve schools and workplaces by addressing psychological issues.

Work with individuals, couples, and families to help them make changes to their behaviors

Identify and diagnose mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders.

How to become a Psychologist

It is recommended to take AP Psychology, biology, chemistry, human anatomy/physiology and other life sciences.

Courses in history, philosophy, writing, religion, and language can also help.

Start a psychology club, look for opportunities to volunteer in your community, get good grades in ACT or SAT.3

Work environment/ schedule

Psychologists held about 174,000 jobs in 2010. About 34 percent of psychologists were self-employed, 29 percent worked in educational services, and 20 percent worked in healthcare settings.

Some work alone, others work in teams for a health care program.

How to become a Psychologist

In order to become a psychologist you need master’s, specialist, or doctoral degree in psychology.

You also need to pass the test in order to become a licensed professional.

It is also recommended to take an AP Psychology course during high school

Salary The median annual wage of

psychologists was $68,640 in May 2010 The lowest 10 percent earned less than

$39,200, and the top 10 percent earned more than $111,810.

Examples of Psychology Many psychologists study body language. For example making direct eye contact can show you are

confidence and are interested and paying attention to the subject. However not being able to hold eye contact may show youare distracted or uncomfortable.

Another sign of confidence and dominance is when people’s body is stretchedoutwards and take up space.

Psychologist vs Therapist vs Psychiatrist

Many people get these confused, and here are the differences between them.

Psychologists generally observe, document, and interpret what mental and behavioral aspects in the client.

Therapists are more hands on, and work closer with the client. Similar to psychologists, they also analyze their client but they also communicate well with the client.

Psychiatrist make sure that the body and mind are working together properly. They are also able to determine which medication is needed for the client.
