If you are thinking about becoming a Travel Counsellor but you’re unsure what to expect or how it will work with your current lifestyle, this blog is here to help. Jo McDonnell, one of our newest Travel Counsellors, shares her experience so far…

“My business officially went live on July 9th 2015!

I’d been working in the industry for approximately fifteen years so I have a lot of experience and contacts. I’m actually a chartered accountant by profession so the majority of my roles had been in finance and office roles. I’ve worked for smaller tour operators where I was more hands on, this gave me valuable experiences in all areas of the travel business. Everything from contracting, pric-ing, marketing and sales support – the sales team were always telling me I should be on the phones selling holidays! My most recent role was at Just Resorts as a luxury tour operator, based in Alderley Edge. I’ve also been the ‘go to’ person amongst my family and friends for travel advice and bookings over the years. I’ve organised many group holidays including an annual ski trip which this year is a party of 32!

A colleague of mine from a previous job many years ago was my initial contact into Travel Counsel-lors, and they put me in touch with the recruitment team. Following a conversation with her I at-tended a Discovery Day the following week. I knew that this would be something I wanted to do. It was just making it a reality that seemed daunting.

The Discovery Day relieved all my fears, answered my questions and gave me the confidence to pursue this opportunity further. Everyone from head office is so friendly and helpful which makes you feel like you can ask questions if you need to. You’ll get your own Business Development con-tact – I’m on Vic Trundle’s team, and she is amazing.

I’ve already had advice from a number of head office departments regarding bookings. Everyone is approachable and always helpful.

I’ve already taken Travel Counsellors’ core values on board and gone that extra mile for my custom-ers. I picked up a local family’s five passports at 7.30am whilst I was running past their house so I could book their Easter 2016 Disney trip before they headed off to Wales for a couple of weeks. It’s all about intertwining your worklife and home life to get the perfect balance. I love being able to do the school run every day with my youngest child Tom, who is eight. It makes such a difference being able to work from home at times that suit me and my family, plus I get to work in my PJ’s every now and then!

Becoming a Travel Counsellor has had a significant impact on not only my life but my children too, they think it’s great. They have just broken up for the summer holidays and are so pleased that I’m around so they don’t have to go to holiday clubs and have babysitters etc. They can simply enjoy the summer and do the activities that they actually want to do. They are eight and thirteen so they are quite self-sufficient but are too young to be left at home all day so my new role works perfectly for us all.

Working from home enables me to do so much that I couldn’t do before, I definitely don’t miss get-ting in the car to go to work! I walk or cycle everywhere now. So much so that I may even sell my car. Although this sounds very dull – I love the fact I can put a load of washing in and peg it out, I can cook a meal from scratch and let it cook through the day. Everything used to be done in a panic after work and now my home life and work life work in sync. I can spend quality time with my children after school then get some more work done once they are settled.

The entire process of recruitment and first few weeks have been wonderful. I was encouraged from day one. I attended a discovery day in Bolton and was immediately drawn to the company. My first and lasting impression was that the people were so warm and straightforward. Steve Byrne came in to chat to us all first thing and gave us such a good grasp on the people and the values of the com-pany. The idea that I might like to be a Travel Counsellor went very quickly from a vague thought to a reality. I’ve had great support from other local Travel Counsellors who contacted me to wish me luck when I started, I’m actually meeting one for a coffee soon. I’m so new but I am absolutely loving it. I’m still learning the ropes, but so far so good!”

Being a Travel Counsellor can change the lives of you and your family, you can do a job you love without having to sacrifice anything. With ultimate freedom, flexible working and becoming em-powered to reach your full potential, you’ll wish you had contacted us sooner!
