Getting The Upper Advantage No Matter The OddsBy: Anthony Hines

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

Many people complain about their office culture.

I am telling you, that the culture in your office is the one that you create.

I don’t care how it was before, you can make it better. Here is how.

First decide that you are going to do it. You are not going to let negative energy deter you or get you down. You can do it if you put your mind to it.

Just like everything else, if you wait for someone else to do it, you will be waiting a long time.

Companies love positive people and they love self-starters. See this as a way to get you noticed.

Build the office culture from your workspace out and take the responsibility to have positive space in your work area.

Make your area a place that people come to rest and take a break and recharge. Build a place that people want to stop by a see because it adds

Put candy or snacks out for people to take. If you are putting out candy, use lollipops because it lasts longer as people take just one instead of a handful like they would other candies. People love free stuff and it really adds to their day. If you want, you can do healthy snacks as well but in my experience, sweets can be a fun thing for people. Small but fun.

When people ask you how you are doing, go out of your way to give a positive answer. People tend to gravitate to positive people so be the beacon for that. Of course that is not easy, but you can do it if it is important enough for you to do. Just by talking positive, you can start the positive vibe. Watch it happen but make it start with you. Its not something you should have to think about. Just make it a part of how you communicate.

Do you celebrate birthdays in your office? Of course you shouldn’t do it daily but how about monthly? Everyone likes to have their birthday remembered and when you do it as a monthly thing, its done evenly throughout the year with a consistent fanfare. It’s a n excuse to get people together even for a few minutes. Watch the positive energy grow. Maybe you want to offer to pick up the cake. Its another way to spearhead the positivity.

Does your company have an event committee? If not, work with management to try to get one created. It’s a great way to meet people from other departments and it’s a reason to come together for the common good. People always get excited about events like say a winter celebration held in January after the holidays have passed and that way more people can attend. Another good way to get people together during a slow time in the year.

Get involved with the mentoring program if you have one in the office. If you don’t have one, work to create one. Management absolutely loves this as it is an organized way to share knowledge. Whether you are a mentor or a mentee, you will find that the process is extremely rewarding and everyone learns from each other. Of course, parameters should be set to make sure that all relationships are consistent but the program can be great if handled properly.

Summer cookouts in the parking lot are another way to help morale. Especially when management gets behind the grill and does the cooking. It shows people that they are appreciated by management and who does not like a break on a great day in the summer. These things do wonders for morale.

How about ice cream? Help to organize an event where there is an ice cream break.

Put out measured cups with many flavor choices and make sure all the fixins are out as well so people can make their own. Believe me, people love it.

How about creating a suggestion box? That way when people complain, you can tell them to put their idea for improvement in the suggestion box. It’s a place for the ideas to go to and it allows these ideas to be captured. Bring people together maybe once a month and have people address the suggestions. You never know how many good ideas can come about.

Have management come out of their offices and meet with departments on a consistent basis. Getting them out with the people is never a bad thing. Management should always acknowledge people greeting them in the hallway and engage people in the cafeteria or in common areas. Being approachable helps people believe that a team culture exists.

Things may change slowly but they will change if people feel that they are being listened to. That said, it all starts with the way you answer questions, greet people, smile and promote positivity. It all starts with you. Waiting for others will only lead to disappointment and positivity may get you noticed in a good way by management which could lead to a bonus or promotion down the road. You never know until you try right?
