THEY ARE OUT OF NEW JOB BOOKS! WHAT YOU GONNA DO? MISSED ALL THE GOOD JOBS POSTED TODAY

MISSED ALL THE GOOD JOBS POSTED TODAY?

Wait…there is no need to ever be without the newest job book because they are all e-books and they are posted on an archival website where you can go back and re-read all the many tips and methods that will help us go back to work…http://www.slideshare.net/fredgwest1999

Dress to get hired here means that you wear clean clothes, a recent bath/shower as this employer is more concerned with your skills, abilities, availability, your motivation to work for them @ the airport than how well you look in a power suit or how killer your resume is.

You need to bite the bullet on this if you want this job and really “GO OLD SCHOOL” after you apply online, get yourself spruced up in your best Clean Casual Clothes (Trim any facial hair or shave…they are nice people but, they are old school too) and go over to the interview and introduce yourself while asking

them to pull your application. If you impress them with your personality, availability and your motivation, they will. You need to go over there with you “A” Game or do not waste the trip! The reason why you may want to take the time can be found at www.hmshost.com TIPSTER: Availability is a new issue here because the airport is a 24/7 operation and some actual opening may require shift work and they will question your ability to get to/from the airport. UMOM Campers have the advantage but, you must put it into play and introduce the fact that you live less than 10 MINUTES away from the Sky Harbor’s new Sky Rail terminal with the light rail (it runs almost 24/7).

The story which started all the hiring… Three years ago next month, we started to hit the HMSHOST Hiring Events and with that first group we took ten players. Nine of the ten were professional kitchen people and one was a young kid who claimed to have about three months of fast and furious Food Experience – although, I wouldn’t have sworn that to be true. The young kid had never flown in an airplane (local Greyhound Travel kid) and so he had never been to an airport either. We were at

Terminal Three that has the First World War Biplane hanging from the ceiling. The plane blew him away and walking through the terminal, he looked like a kid who had just discovered Christmas and ice cream at the same time. He just couldn’t believe that the plane was real and that people really flew it. At the Interview, the gang of nine pros did UMOM proud and presented, showcased their skills and years of experience when they were asked: “Why do you want to work for us at the airport?” To a person the HMSHOST Recruiters said: “Thank you very much, we will let you know…”

Then our young kid with questionable experience was asked and his answer reflected that sense of animation and excitement that was so different from the gang of nine. He went on to say: “WORK for you at the airport???? Why wouldn’t I want to work for you at the airport because this is the most exciting place that I have ever seen…You know they have a WW1 Airplane hanging from the ceiling! And so many interesting people…I have never seen so many people and it’s interesting to think about where they are going…you know I love working with people…I am kind of a people person and

where could I ever get such a chance to work with them all?” He claimed that he didn’t but, I know he did get so carried away that he said “I am almost willing to pay you to let me work here!”

Instead of thank you very much, he alone heard those golden words: “You are hired!” It was there that we understood that it was motivation, excitement and interest that gets you hired here because they are not looking for the Iron Chef…they will train you the cooking skills but, they can’t train you to like people.

Insider Tipster: Here are normal questions that get asked at Barista and Starbuck Interviews…

• Why Starbucks? • What made you want to work for this company? • What are your plans on staying in the area for the next couple years? • How did you make a bad work situation better? • Describe a challenging situation you have faced at a previous job, and how you resolved it. • If a customer was buying a cake, what 3 items would you recommend they buy with the cake? • What is your weakness? • Be prepared to talk about a time you helped rectify a mistake. You may get a question like: "When did you make a mistake and how did you fix it?" You can always pause, and if you genuinely don't know how to answer a question you can ask to come back to the question. • Tell me about yourself. • Why do you feel that you would be a good fit for the team? • Tell me about a time when you had to go above and beyond. • Tell me about a time when you failed to meet a job expectation-what happened, how you overcame that, and what it looked like later when you met that expectation. • Describe a time when you had to make a decision without guidance. • When you've started up previous jobs, what did you do to make sure you were successful? Tell me about a time you were put in a position where you felt that a manager's assignment was unfair. What actions did you take? What was the outcome?

Line Cook at Cheesecake Factory - Accepted Offer Interview Details – The interview process was very quick. It was during a mass hire. I filled my application and didn't know there was a current interview process so I figured I might as well wait. i waited about an hour and I was called to speak with the Executive Kitchen Manager, at the time I didn't know what his position was, and he asked me some questions like what I expected at the cheesecake factory and whether I wanted to do pizzas (previous experience) . Eventually I got hired on the spot. Interview Questions

• What type of dressings do you know? • What makes someone a great chef?

================================================================ Line Cook Interview - No Offer The process took 1 day Interview: The person doing the interviews was only looking for employees for the front of the house, I know this because I spent an hour watching her and everyone that came in for a server position got interviewed on the spot, whereas all the back of house employees had their applications thrown in a pile and were told "we'll call you in 24 hours, if you don't hear from us, that means your application was passed up. I could tell that she didn't know what she was doing when she told me "you don't have enough experience as a line cook, when I have seven years as a line cook, and two as a kitchen manager.* Interview Questions:

• Have you ever worked as a line cook before? NOTE: * Here is a case where he opened the interview with his years of experience including being a Kitchen Manager - this is where the interview went sidewayz...This was a case of extent disconnect with the interview as to why he was downgrading himself to an entry level job...creating the question of "What is wrong with him?" The rest of the interview, without him knowing, was trying to determine the answer to that question. He failed to ease their fears and he lost his shot. Had he downplayed his management experience and had pumped up his kitchen skills and then matched them up with what they were looking for. His conversation was too much him bragging about his great skills and not enough with what the employer needed. There should be a lesion here.

LOOKING FOR JOBS IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES… We have talked that eight out of ten job seekers get it wrong. As I said it is a mine field with ancient believes and notions that linger on even though the labor (job seeking) market has drastically changed in the past year or so. Much of the misinformation comes from it being out of date or that the person who is giving you the secrets of success have not been out looking for work in the year or so. Don’t blame them but, do not trust your employment future on what they tell you. We talked about the myth of the one-size-fits-all, killer resume and that its once might power to move heaven and earth to get you a job has waned to the point that it costs eight out of ten people a job. This myth was always over stated and promoted by people who usually made a living at making them or from people who spent a fortune in purchasing one. As the old man said, “you can’t ride a dead horse into town and the one-size-fits-all resume can’t get you hired anymore. OK! If you are the Iron Chef or some corporate type…yea…you still need this mighty beast…as it still welds magical powers in boardrooms across the world. But, then again, if you are reading this then we can assume you ain’t a corporate warrior. Most entry level jobs require an application and many times these are filled out after you have been interviewed and/or hired. Here a resume is a loss leader and can (if you have a killer resume) work against you to the point of you not getting a job. In many occupations a killer resume leads to comment like “you are over qualified for this job”…”you wouldn’t like this job!”…or the worse “…and you applied for this job why?” This is due to the snob factor and/or the related issue of the intimidation factor. If your killer resume is better than the person interviewing you has or worse yet, the person interviewing you doesn’t have a resume; you are not connecting on the peer level and more importantly, it just cost you that job.

THE FIVE URBAN MYTHS OF TELEMARKETING The lure of telemarketing is easy to understand…it is an easy job to get and the hours are flexible but, this is a job that comes with a battery of downsides. The biggest downside is that these are hard jobs which are not for the shy or those who personalize rejection. They are easy to get but, they are very difficult for you to keep because the jobs tend to be commission or draw against commission or require that you set “x” number of appointments or make “x” number of sales per day/week to keep your job. This is hard feat to do in good times but, in economic bad times, it becomes almost impossible. The end result for 95 out of 100 (US DEPT of LABOR) people employed in this industry is unemployment. Unemployment this time becomes harder as you were excited about a company wanting to hire you, you started to breathe the fresh air of employment and start making plans and commitments that you will not (in the end) be able to keep. The excitement of being hired and having a job gives way (quickly) to desperation, pressure put on you to meet unrealistic goals and going home every night wondering if you will have a job tomorrow. In the end you are far worse off than you were before you were hired because you may have rented a new apartment, bought a used car or made promises to your family about how your fortune was turning around. Within (usually mere weeks) you have gone from the top of the world to being in a far worse pace with new bills that you can no longer pay or having to return the car, leaving the new apartment and disappointing your loved ones. then understand why the job was so easy to get. The business plan for this industry’s success lies in their ability to bring you in, chew you up and spite you out. If your salary was a draw against commission then, you may owe them money and you will now have to deal with new bill collectors bothering you. This is an industry that you must be knowledgeable of the many myths and urban legends that they use to lure you in. This knowledge can at least help you better select a

company, if you still think that you can be one of the 5 out of 100 that are successful. We have collected a series of these to better prepare you to do employment battle and maybe, a fair chance.

TELEMARKETING MYTHS MYTH # ONE: ANYONE CAN DO THIS JOB. The truth is that anyone who can talk and read a script can get hired. This does not mean that anyone can do this job. The job is very difficult and requires great cold calling and communication skills. Not everyone has the ability to call a total stranger and convince them that they need whatever you are selling. Not many people can successful deal with constant reject, anger and rudeness without taking to heart. An old salesman once told me that you have to believe in your product. He said that if you believe in what you are selling, you have a passion for the product/service and would buy the

product yourself (or has); there is nothing you cannot sell. So the bottom line is that that most people are not in the position of selling products/services that they love, trust and use and this is (in part) why the failure rate is so high. MYTH # TWO: THE JOB WAS ADVERTISED AS CUSTOMER SERVICE. Any time you are calling people or receiving calls where you are selling a product/service this is telemarketing. A long time ago, employers found that when they ran an ad for telemarketers, no one would respond. Out of desperation and their sense of marketing, they found that when the relabeled the job as customer service, account representative or even appointment setter, they would get a big response. Today, the seasoned job seeker has learned that the employers use this trick and avoid the job category all together. This is a shame because real customer service job are many times a stepping stone to a good career with a large company. The real CSR jobs get lost in the sea of phony CSR advertisements. Real CSR jobs do not usually involve any sales or sales is a minor component of the job which usually amounts to upgrading services already have. The vast majorities of real CSR jobs are inbound (where they call you) and deal with you getting information from them, dealing with problems or addressing concerns about existing accounts or taking orders (including dispatching). If you see CSR jobs that promise you a vast, kingly salary of thousands of dollars.

MYTH # THREE: IT’S APPOINMENT SETTING – THAT’S AN EASY GIG! Appointment setting is the worse of the lot because you do all of the hard selling to get a client interested and then have to turn the sale over to a sales rep who might (usually) not feel a need to share their commission with you. Think about it and you will see what a terrible job this really is. You make the cold call to convince a total stranger that they need to make an appointment with your sales rep to buy a product/service that they do not need. People who are successful doing appointment setting are natural sales people with a rare talent that most of us do not have. Here is a sample: {Ring…Ring} Mr. Jones? How are you Mr. Jones? If you were to get hit by a bus, would your family be protected? How would they survive? I would like to introduce you to _______(to remain unnamed) insurance and I was wondering if I could schedule an appoint with our Family Security Expert to ensure that your family is well covered?” This is a real script for a real insurance company here in the valley. Can you imagine getting a call like that at suppertime? How would you feel about them interrupting your family’s dinner with this call? Thought so! See why this is such a terrible job. The problem here is that job seekers confuse (many times by design of the employer’s ad) this job with reservation agent/clerk. Again, if you are calling then you are an appointment setter and if they are calling you to schedule an appointment then you are an office clerk, receptionist (or in smaller companies you might be both). MYTH # 4: THEY ARE OFFERING ME A SALARY NOT COMMISSION. The reality of that salary is that it is tied into you generating more income to the company than they are paying you. This can be a draw against commission which means that they pay you a set salary (per hour/per month) but, it means that you have to generate enough commission (not sales) to cover the draw (salary). If you do not make the paid amount, you must repay them the difference. This is a terrible way to work as you cannot predict the commission you will receive because you cannot count on how much you will sell on any given week. Even if they are paying you $10/HR. as a salary like a regular job, you have to understand that you must meet a certain quota of sales or appointments

scheduled per day or per week. If you don’t meet your quota more than once, they then let you go. Most people are let go after 2-3 weeks because they were not making their quota (sales/appointments). MYTH # FIVE: THEY SAY THAT I CAN MAKE UP TO $5,000 PER MONTH Any sales manager worth their salt is a salary optimist. Remember a good sales manager was even a better sales person. They became a sales manager due to their ability to look you in the eye (without blinking) and tell you that you can make up to $5,000 per month in salary. They are not lying in a technical sense as they told you that you could earn “UP TO” that amount. I will tell you that you could earn “UP TO $1 MILION” and be just as truthful. “Up to means” that it might be possible to earn that much but; they didn’t say that you would. Did they? The reality is that you could make down to ZERO if you do not make enough sales. People including ourselves have a terrible habit of hearing what we want to and forgetting the rest. The truth is that if you could earn $5,000 per month that easy…you wouldn’t be reading this. The reality of what you will earn and being able to build a life or raise a family with these jobs on a steady (monthly) basis cannot be calculated nor done by the average person. ================================================================= RAY OF HOPE BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE USED JOB SHACK… There is a ray of hope in this depressing issue of the Used Job Shack and it comes from the fact that the same skill sets and abilities that are needed to be a telemarketer qualifies you for REAL Customer Service Representative (CSR) jobs that are not sales, pay REAL salaries at descent wages ($12-18/HR. plus) and that are an entry job into a real career with a major company.

KEY HERE IS FULL DISCLOSURE WITH AN EMPHASIS UPON THE CIRCUMSTANCES The employer understands that there is a big difference between “I stole to feed my babies” versus “”I didn’t really steal that big screen TV…It was the Super Bowl and I borrowed it…If my truck hadn’t broke down, I would have brought it back…!” Also, the employer is more concerned in who you are instead of who you were. They want to know that you learned more from the experience than just not get caught again. They are interested and weigh heavily what you have done, what you have achieved and how far you are removed from the person who was in trouble. This is your mission, your job and the better you showcase your transformation, the easier it will be for them to hire you. If you have not turned your life around or feel uncomfortable discussing this, these jobs are not for you and save yourself some grief and don’t apply. It’s on you! They do not owe you. You owe it to yourself but, that is a difference conversation... ==============================================================

Interview Questions • Tell me a little more about yourself • Give a time where you had to persuade a peer or a coworker to have something go your way. What was the situation and how was the outcome? • Tell me about a time you had to multitask between tasks in a pressure environment. What was the situation and how did you overcome it? • Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer. What was the situation and what was the outcome? • Give me a time when you and your coworkers couldn't agree on a project. What was the situation and how did you overcome it?

Claims Representative Interview - I applied online and the process took 2 weeks Interview Details – Applied via their website. Within 3 days, I received an e-mail asking me to complete assessments. These tests included data entry, typing, personality, and logic testing. If you pass those, you are called by a recruiter to schedule a phone interview. The phone interview is prompt, and took an hour. They ask scenario based questions... Tell me a time when, how you handled it and the result. If you do well in the interview process, they will propose an offer on the spot. There is no 1:1 interview that is face to face. Then they use a company called Hire Right to perform back ground checks, drug screening, etc. Start date is 2 months after phone interview (in my case). The also expect you to be able to handle a very strict schedule (they plan out your day from beginning to end) and you need to be flexible with times of the day for work schedule as it varies. If you miss any tasks requested by hire right through email and don’t respond or do what they ask, your offer is voided. I haven't started yet to provide office info. It is a cubical setting. Interview Question – None of the questions were really difficult. you just have to have scenarios ready and be ready to give the situation, how you handled it and the result. Some questions were: • Tell me a time you disagreed with a boss and how you handled it. • Tell me a time you worked as part of a team and they weren't pulling their weight and how you handled it, etc. =================================================================== CRC Representative Interview I applied online and the process took 2 weeks Interview Details – 1. Filled out app online 2. Signed disclosure 3. Received testing material 4. Received competitive score email. 5. HR rep Called to schedule phone interview. Had interview and received job offer the same day. I am currently in the drug screen/drug test part of it now.

LOOK THE PART I suggested that candidates for jobs think about their attire and behavior in job interviews the same way. The casting analogy might sound a little entertainment industry-centric to some of you, but stick with me. Though I have worked in the entertainment industry my entire career, and both hire for the industry and give advice to others on how to get hired in it, my advice applies to any job hunt and actually goes beyond your outward appearance and behavior once you land the interview. When you are looking for a job, every aspect of every contact you have with a potential employer communicates who you are as a candidate and whether you are right for the opening. Yes, there could be educational requirements for the position, but sometimes they are very broad and, beyond that, there is always the question of “fit.” As a hiring executive, I always want to choose someone who is “right” for the job.

So, what does that mean for you as the job candidate? If you are looking for a receptionist job, think about what the ideal receptionist would be for the places where you are applying. Beyond tailoring your resume to highlight experience the duties of the job, such retail and server jobs, use your cover letter to actually tell a story about you that makes you seem like the perfect candidate. In your letter, mention that you were voted “most likely to start a conversation with a total stranger” in high school, or that your college debate team coach told you repeatedly that even though you made good arguments for your side in matches, smiling throughout those arguments was effecting the team’s ranking. Tell me that you were always chosen to check VIP alumni in for events at your school because the organizers knew that no matter what the situation, you would handle it tactfully. Even when you had to turn people away, they walked away smiling. And then, once you are going in for an interview (of course, I’m going to want to have you in for an interview after hearing about your alumni event experience), dress professionally and conscientiously, be friendly and confident, make eye contact, smile, convey ease… You want me picturing you at my company’s receptionist desk, in this case, or in a cubicle in the finance department, or sitting outside the marketing executive’s office. As I concluded that first blog post on my site back at the beginning, I’m not saying you have to wear glasses to get the job as the librarian… but it can’t hurt. ================================================================== Summary Report for: 43-4051.00 - Customer Service Representatives http://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/43-4051.00 Even though many of these companies in today’s book have good job descriptions, the employment grail (bottom line expert) authority is the Department of Labor. Each of these companies has a computer (software) that is the gate keeper and you will need ONET to beat it! =================================================================

HOW I GOT MY JOB @ BANK OF AMERICA… TELLER - APPLIED ONLINE AND THE PROCESS TOOK 2 MONTHS Interview Details – I had a long experience so I hope this helps someone!

I was originally contacted for a phone interview mid-May and during the phone interview I was scheduled for an interview with the banking center manager. I attended my interview no more than 3 days later and it was a typical one on one interview. She asked me a few questions, Tell me about yourself, Tell me about a situation where you fixed a problem for a customer, customer service questions. A few days later I was contacted by the background screening investigator but I missed the call on that Friday. I never returned the call because I was busy at work. The very next day I received an email saying I didn't get the job. The next Monday I got an email from my recruiter asking me to interview at a different location. I set that interview and finally spoke to the investigator and she said sometimes the recruiters pressure them to get them done quickly. All they needed was to confirm a year I started a previous job because I put in the wrong year. So I interview at the other location; this is the beginning of June now. They needed two tellers so I was pretty confident I was going to get it. It was just two of the managers interviewing me. And my screening came back satisfactory. Few days later I got the email saying I didn't get the job. I was sad but not giving up, so I emailed my recruiter letting her know I was still very interested in working with Bank of America. A few weeks later, I received an email from her asking me to interview the next day. I went in for a one on one interview and it went great. It was the best interview I've ever had. She asked me customer service questions and questions about my previous managers. I also had to role play two scenarios. The first was she was making a deposit into her checking and I had to convince her to open a savings. The second one she was wanting a bank statement for her sick brothers’ account but he was in the hospital. She didn't tell me their policies on this so I really had to wing it. If you have customer service experiences just do your best, make eye contact and you'll do fine. At the end of the interview she took me on a tour and introduced me to everyone working. My interview was at 10 and I got the phone call saying they wanted to extend an offer around 5. I'm so excited and my best advice so anyone who truly wants to work for Bank of America, look at their careers page and get familiar with career paths and products and services, don't give up and really express to your recruiter so they know you're serious about working there. Good luck!
