VSSE( Safety Engineer )
IH( Industrial Hygienist )
Safety engineering and industrial hygienist has similarity with each other not only in the same field in company but also have the same goal which is prevent hazard may effect to
people in workplace and surrounding environment that’s why some company have one of both this profession because
their overlapping task. But in the other hand they have many differences about related specific assignment because of
their education background.
First differences, is SE have to minimize or lost potential hazard in workplace by their regular direct inspection or audit
safety management system (SMK3) of operation or work
flow in workplace but IH has the specific function to responsible about condition environment that can impact to
everyone in the workplace i.e. Sick, undesirable health problem or ergonomics. Thus IH more concern about health.
Second differences, is education background, IH graduation from d3 (expl: D3-K3 unair) and their curriculum have no management course material because their job later not to leading safety in company but only become supervisor.
In addition some IH graduates from public health with occupational safety in continuation major or from medical
major. Otherwise SE generally from engineering majors as commonly use to leading safety in company.
Third differences, since IH is not from engineering discipline they don’t know how to audit of operation or motion equipment because they not too familiar about
engineering. On the contrary SE not too know about health especially occupational disease effect (PAK)
So, we can conclude that the differences about
roles of IH and SE in company / manufacturer because of their education background. but IH and SE can support with each other and interrelationship in their knowledge in safety in work area
