Challenge –
A case study
The Japanese have always
loved fresh fish.
But the waters close to
Japan have not held many
fish for decades.
So fishing boats got bigger and
went further into deep sea.
The farther the fishermen went, the
longer it took to bring in the fish.
• Since the return trip took more days,
the fish were not fresh.
• The Japanese did not like the taste.
Freezers on Boat
To solve this
problem, fishing
companies installed
freezers on their
boats & they would
catch the fish and
freeze them at sea.
Freezers allowed the boats to go
further in deep sea and stay longer.
• However, Japanese could taste the
difference between fresh and frozen fish.
• The frozen fish brought a lower price.
So fishing companies installed fish tanks in
their boats. They would catch the fish and
stuff them in the tanks, fin to fin.
After a little thrashing around, the fish
stopped moving and stayed. They
were tired and dull, but still alive.
•Since the fish did not move
for longer periods, they lost
their fresh-fish taste.
•The Japanese preferred the
lively taste of fresh fish, not
sluggish and dull fish.
What was the Solution ?
•So how did Japanese fishing
companies solve this problem?
• If you are a consultant, how will
you take up this challenge &
suggest your recommendations ?
"Man thrives, oddly enough,
only in the presence of a
challenging environment.”
For the Japanese fish problem,
the best solution is simple.
So how did the Japanese
Fish stay Fresh?
The Solution ?
• To keep the fish tasting fresh,
the Japanese fishing companies
still put the fish in the tanks.
• But now they add a small shark
to each tank.
The shark eats a few fish,
but most of the fish arrive
in a very lively state !
Reason ???
• The fish are challenged
because of shark and hence
are constantly on the move.
• The challenge they face
keeps them alive and fresh!
Recommendations
•Do not thrive on past glory.
•Don't create success and lie in it.
• Failing makes you tired.
Challenges in our lives can keep
us moving forward.
Recommendations :
•Without challenges we can
become complacent, find life
boring, and become inactive.
•Remember oaks grow strong in
contrary winds, and diamonds
are made under pressure.
Recommendations :
•Consider new challenges and
problems in your life as a shark
– the challenges and problems
can keep us motivated and
moving forward.
Never be afraid to try
something new !
Learning to live without
recognition is a skill !
Nobody truly knows which
employee actually deserves
the merit of success, or who's
is actually contributing the
necessary support to make
things happen.
If anyone ever tells you that
your work is unprofessional;
Remember:
Amateurs built the Ark
(Which saved all the species)!
And Professionals built
the Titanic.
(All died tragically !!)
Challenges keep you alive!!
Put a shark in your life
and see how far you
can really go!
